Among the aesthetic beauties of the Prophetic biography (Seerah).
Immediate generosity.
It is a remarkable form of giving, characterized by a lightning speed that captures the eyes and captivates those present.
Its essence lies in a noble sacrifice that is indifferent to any sense of awkwardness.
It does not shy away from the requests and needs of people, no matter how burdensome or taxing they may be.
Yet, his personality was inherently beloved and naturally inclined toward generosity and benefiting others.
Such was the Chosen One, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
Sahl Ibn Sa'd, may Allah be pleased with him, said:
A woman came with a burdah (a cloak).
He asked, "Do you know what a burdah is?"
They replied, "Yes."
It is a garment with a woven border.
She said, "O Messenger of Allah,
I have woven this with my own hands to clothe you."
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, accepted it, as he was in need of it.
He then came out to us wearing it as his lower garment.
A man from the people said,
"O Messenger of Allah,
give it to me to wear."
He said, "Yes."
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, sat in the gathering for a while,
then he went back, folded it,
and sent it to him.
The people said to the man,
"You did not do well.
You asked him for it,
even though you knew he never turns away a seeker."
The man replied,
"By Allah, I did not ask him for it
except that it might be my shroud on the day I die."
Sahl said,
"And indeed, it became his shroud."
Imagine,
if something like that were to happen to one of us,
we would be distressed by the awkwardness,
criticize the one who asked,
and turn the incident into the talk of the town,
lecturing on the proper etiquette of requesting and benefiting from others.
The best among us would be one who gives money and then turns away from the person.
And Allah is the One whose help is sought.
