One of the scourges of science
Imam Al-Zuhri, may God Almighty have mercy on him, said
He died in the year one hundred and twenty-four AH
But knowledge goes
Forgetting and quitting studying
Knowledge lives and is established by studying
It is proven by teaching and review
Leaving or abandoning him leads to forgetfulness
Therefore, he benefited from the words of the wise
Knowledge disappears only through forgetfulness and abandonment of revision
Therefore, it is necessary to review science, teach it, and write about it
This is what is called zakat on knowledge and fulfilling its rights
Rather, forgetfulness occurs as a result of negligence
And indulging in desires
He abandoned reading and scientific renewal
And being preoccupied with it
And not teaching it and calling for it
The worst of its evils is forgetfulness, and it is the most dangerous
Because of its decline and loss of interest
And forgetting goodness and staying with the common people
Because people are ignorant, not knowledgeable people
He is destined for failure, not success
Its end is misery, not happiness
It has been narrated that anyone who memorized a surah from the Qur’an was censured
Then he neglected to forget it
It is weak according to scholars
But that does not exempt him from accountability and blame
Therefore, how ugly it is for a seeker of knowledge to forget the Qur’an
If it is not great, it is a disaster to be taken for granted
Especially the busy neglected one
The scholar Ibn Uthaymeen, may God have mercy on him, was asked about this issue
He replied
Forgetting the Qur’an has two reasons
The first
What nature requires
And the second
Turning away from the Qur’an and not being indifferent to it
The first
A person does not sin by it
It is not punishable
It occurred from the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace
When he prayed with the people
And he forgot a verse
When he left
Ubayy ibn Ka'b, may God be pleased with him, reminded him of it
The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said to him
Didn't you remind me of her?
The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, heard
Read to read
And he said
May God have mercy on so-and-so
He reminded me of a verse
I had forgotten about her
This indicates that forgetfulness occurs by nature
There is no blame on man
As for what is caused by symptoms and indifference
This may be a sin
Some people are plotted by Satan
He whispers to him not to memorize the Qur’an
Because he does not forget it and fall into sin
And God Almighty says
So they fought the friends of Satan
Satan's plot was weak
Let man memorize the Qur’an
Because it is good
Hopefully it will not be forgotten
And God Almighty
When his servant thought of him
God Almighty knows best
