But only men of understanding will pay heed.” (39:9) 00:00:10.740 --> 00:00:16.739 The Splendor of Knowledge and Wisdom. 00:00:16.739 --> 00:00:21.739 By Dr. Hamzah Ibn Fayi' Al Fathi. 00:00:21.739 --> 00:00:27.059 May Allah preserve him. 00:00:27.059 --> 00:00:32.270 On the Afflictions of Knowledge. 00:00:32.270 --> 00:00:36.270 Imam Al Zuhri, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: 00:00:36.270 --> 00:00:40.270 He who passed away in the year 124 AH: 00:00:40.340 --> 00:00:42.340 "Knowledge only departs through..." 00:00:42.340 --> 00:00:45.340 "...forgetfulness and the abandonment of review." 00:00:45.340 --> 00:00:49.579 Knowledge is kept alive and firmly rooted through discussion. 00:00:49.579 --> 00:00:52.579 It is solidified through teaching and revision. 00:00:52.579 --> 00:00:56.579 Abandoning or neglecting it leads to forgetfulness. 00:00:56.579 --> 00:00:59.579 Thus, one benefits from the saying of the wise: 00:00:59.579 --> 00:01:03.579 "Knowledge only departs through forgetfulness and the abandonment of review." 00:01:03.579 --> 00:01:08.579 Therefore, it is necessary to review knowledge, teach it, and write it down. 00:01:08.579 --> 00:01:13.579 This is what is known as the zakat of knowledge and fulfilling its due right. 00:01:14.260 --> 00:01:18.260 Forgetfulness occurs as a result of negligence, 00:01:18.260 --> 00:01:20.260 indulgence in worldly desires, 00:01:20.260 --> 00:01:23.260 and the abandonment of reading and academic renewal. 00:01:23.260 --> 00:01:25.260 It also comes from being preoccupied away from it, 00:01:25.260 --> 00:01:28.260 and failing to teach it or call others to it. 00:01:28.260 --> 00:01:32.260 The greatest of its afflictions is forgetfulness, which is the most dangerous, 00:01:32.260 --> 00:01:36.260 because it leads to the effacement of knowledge and the loss of its benefit. 00:01:36.260 --> 00:01:40.260 It involves forgetting what is good and remaining among the ignorant, 00:01:40.260 --> 00:01:44.260 for the place of the ignorant is not among the scholars. 00:01:44.260 --> 00:01:47.260 Its outcome is failure, not success, 00:01:47.260 --> 00:01:51.260 and its end is misery, not contentment. 00:01:51.260 --> 00:01:55.260 It has been narrated that there is blame for one who memorizes a surah of the Qur'an, 00:01:55.260 --> 00:01:57.260 and then forgets it out of negligence. 00:01:57.260 --> 00:02:00.260 While this narration is considered weak by the scholars, 00:02:00.260 --> 00:02:04.670 it does not exempt one from accountability and reproach. 00:02:04.670 --> 00:02:08.669 How ugly it is for a student of knowledge to forget the Qur'an! 00:02:08.669 --> 00:02:13.669 Even if it is not a major sin, it is a calamity for which one is held to account, 00:02:13.669 --> 00:02:16.669 especially for the negligent and the distracted. 00:02:16.669 --> 00:02:21.669 The eminent scholar Ibn 'Uthaymin, may Allah have mercy upon him, was asked about this matter, 00:02:21.669 --> 00:02:23.669 and he replied: 00:02:23.669 --> 00:02:25.669 "Forgetfulness of the Qur'an has two causes: 00:02:25.669 --> 00:02:26.669 The first: 00:02:26.669 --> 00:02:28.669 That which is necessitated by human nature. 00:02:28.669 --> 00:02:30.669 The second: 00:02:30.669 --> 00:02:34.669 Turning away from the Qur'an and showing indifference toward it. 00:02:34.669 --> 00:02:35.740 As for the first: 00:02:35.740 --> 00:02:37.740 A person does not incur sin for it, 00:02:37.740 --> 00:02:39.740 nor is he punished for it. 00:02:39.740 --> 00:02:42.740 It even occurred to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, 00:02:42.740 --> 00:02:44.740 when he led the people in prayer, 00:02:44.740 --> 00:02:46.740 and forgot a verse. 00:02:46.740 --> 00:02:47.740 When he finished, 00:02:47.740 --> 00:02:51.740 Ubayy Ibn Ka'b, may Allah be pleased with him, reminded him of it. 00:02:51.740 --> 00:02:54.740 The Prophet, peace be upon him, said to him: 00:02:54.740 --> 00:02:57.740 'Why did you not remind me of it?' 00:02:57.740 --> 00:03:00.740 And the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, heard 00:03:00.740 --> 00:03:02.740 a reciter reciting, 00:03:02.740 --> 00:03:03.740 and he said: 00:03:03.740 --> 00:03:05.740 'May Allah have mercy on so-and-so; 00:03:05.740 --> 00:03:07.740 he has reminded me of a verse 00:03:07.740 --> 00:03:09.740 that I had forgotten.' 00:03:09.740 --> 00:03:14.800 This indicates that the forgetfulness which occurs by way of human nature 00:03:14.800 --> 00:03:17.800 carries no blame for the person. 00:03:17.800 --> 00:03:21.800 As for that which is caused by turning away and indifference, 00:03:21.800 --> 00:03:23.800 for this, one may incur sin. 00:03:23.800 --> 00:03:26.800 Some people are plotted against by the Shaytan, 00:03:26.800 --> 00:03:29.800 who whispers to them not to memorize the Qur'an 00:03:29.800 --> 00:03:32.800 so that they do not forget it and fall into sin. 00:03:32.800 --> 00:03:35.800 Yet Allah, glory be to Him and Exalted is He, says: 00:03:35.800 --> 00:03:38.800 'So fight against the allies of the Shaytan.' 00:03:38.800 --> 00:03:42.800 “Those who believe do battle for the cause of Allah; and those who disbelieve do battle for the cause of idols. So fight the minions of the devil. Lo! the devil's strategy is ever weak.” (4:76) 00:03:42.800 --> 00:03:45.020 Let a person memorize the Qur'an, 00:03:45.020 --> 00:03:47.020 for it is good, 00:03:47.020 --> 00:03:50.020 and let him hope not to forget it. 00:03:50.020 --> 00:03:52.020 For Allah, glory be to Him, 00:03:52.020 --> 00:03:54.020 is as His servant expects Him to be. 00:03:54.020 --> 00:03:56.020 And Allah, the Exalted, knows best."
