A summary of the concepts held by the Ahl al-Sunnah.
Psychological security for the individual.
It is a person’s sense of inner security within their own self, heart, and thoughts.
It is their feeling of tranquility, serenity, and safety regarding their religion and their self.
It also encompasses their intellect, wealth, and honor.
It involves being distanced from the causes of fear and anxiety concerning these essential necessities.
This type of security cannot be achieved except under the shade of Tawhid (the oneness of Allah).
And under the shade of the Sharia of the Most Merciful, which He, glory be to Him, perfected for His believing servants.
He deposited within it everything that preserves their security in this world and the hereafter.
Regarding the impact of Tawhid on psychological security, Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, says:
The servant’s need to worship Allah alone, associating no partners with Him,
has no equal to which it can be compared.
However, it resembles in some respects the body’s need for food, drink, and breath, so it may be compared to that.
Yet, there are many differences between them.
For the reality of the servant lies in their heart and soul.
And there is no righteousness for them except through their true God, besides whom there is no deity.
The heart finds no tranquility except in His remembrance, and no serenity except in knowing and loving Him.
There is no righteousness for the servant except by unifying their love, worship, fear, and hope for Him alone.
Even if they were to attain all manner of pleasures and joys through other than Him,
such things would not last for them.
As for their true God,
they are in need of Him at every moment, in every state, and wherever they may be.
Thus, the very act of believing in Him, loving Him, worshipping Him, revering Him, and remembering Him,
is the nourishment, strength, righteousness, and foundation of a human being.
Shaykh al-Islam describes this safe and tranquil life,
during the time of his tribulation,
saying:
"By Allah, the Great, besides whom there is no deity,
I am in a state of blessing from Allah,
the likes of which I have never seen in my entire life."
Allah, glory be to Him and Exalted, has opened the doors of His bounty and grace,
and the treasures of His generosity and mercy,
in ways that never crossed the mind nor entered the imagination.
For true pleasure, joy, happiness, and the goodness of time,
and the bliss that cannot be expressed in words,
lie only in knowing Allah, glory be to Him and Exalted,
and in His Tawhid and faith in Him.
The more Tawhid strengthens in the heart of the servant,
the stronger their faith, tranquility, reliance, and certainty become.
As for the impact of the merciful Sharia rulings on psychological security,
it is represented in those rulings which Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, has legislated,
so that the servant may feel secure regarding their religion and their self,
as well as their intellect, wealth, and honor.
It suffices to review some of the rulings of this Sharia, both obligations and prohibitions,
to see that they were only legislated to preserve these five essential necessities,
and to protect, perfect, and secure them.
