In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. A summary of the Tafsir of al-Tabari. Abridged by Dr. 'Aqil ibn Salim al-Shammari. Surah al-Mujadilah. In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. “Hast thou not seen those who take for friends a folk with whom Allah is wroth? They are neither of you nor of them, and they swear a false oath knowingly.” (58:14) They are not of you. “Hast thou not seen those who take for friends a folk with whom Allah is wroth? They are neither of you nor of them, and they swear a false oath knowingly.” (58:14) Have you not looked with the eye of your heart, O Muhammad? To see those people who took as allies a people with whom Allah is angry. They are the hypocrites. They befriended the Jews and offered them counsel. These people who took as allies those with whom Allah is angry are not— from among your own people or your own faith. Nor are they of the Jews with whom Allah is angry. They swear to lies. This refers to their statements to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him. “When the hypocrites come unto thee (O Muhammad), they say: We bear witness that thou art indeed Allah's messenger. And Allah knoweth that thou art indeed His messenger, and Allah beareth witness that the hypocrites indeed are speaking falsely.” (63:1) They are liars, neither believing in him nor affirming his message. Allah has prepared for them a severe punishment. Indeed, evil is that which they used to do. They have taken their oaths as a shield. Thus, they obstructed the way of Allah. Thus, they obstructed the way of Allah. For them is a humiliating punishment. Allah has prepared for these hypocrites who befriended the Jews— a severe punishment in the Hereafter. Indeed, evil is that which they used to do in this world, by deceiving the Muslims and offering counsel to their enemies among the Jews. They made their oaths and pledges a shield to protect themselves from being killed. They use them to defend their own lives, their wealth, and their offspring. This is because whenever their hypocrisy is exposed, they swear to the believers in Allah that they are indeed among them. By these oaths, which they took as a shield, they obstructed the believers from the way of Allah regarding them. For them is a punishment in the Fire that will humiliate them. Their wealth and their children will not avail them against Allah at all. Those are the companions of the Fire. They will abide therein eternally. Their wealth will not avail these hypocrites on the Day of Resurrection, so that they might ransom themselves with it from the humiliating punishment of Allah. Nor will their children be able to help them or save them from Allah when He punishes them. These are the ones who took as allies a people with whom Allah is angry. They are the hypocrites, the companions of the Fire. They will remain in the Fire forever, without end. These are the ones whom Allah has mentioned. They are the companions of the Fire. On the day Allah resurrects them all from their graves, alive in the same state they were in before they died, they will swear to Him just as they swear to you, lying and acting falsely. They think that in their oaths and their swearing by Allah, they are upon some truth. Verily, it is they who are the liars in what they swear to. “The devil hath engrossed them and so hath caused them to forget remembrance of Allah. They are the devil's party. Lo! is it not the devil's party who will be the losers?” (58:19) Those are the party of Satan. “The devil hath engrossed them and so hath caused them to forget remembrance of Allah. They are the devil's party. Lo! is it not the devil's party who will be the losers?” (58:19) Verily, the soldiers of Satan and his followers are the losers, cheated in their bargain. “Lo! those who oppose Allah and His messenger, they will be among the lowest.” (58:20) Allah has decreed: "I will surely overcome, I and My messengers." Indeed, Allah is Powerful, Exalted in Might. The Exalted says: Those who oppose Allah and His Messenger regarding His limits, and regarding the obligations He has imposed upon them, and who show hostility toward Him, are among the most humiliated. For victory belongs to Allah and His Messenger, as Allah has ordained and written in the Mother of the Book. "I will surely overcome, I and My messengers," against those who oppose and defy Me. Indeed, Allah—glorified be His praise—possesses the power and ability to destroy anyone who opposes Him and His Messenger. He is the Exalted in Might, so no one can prevail against Him, if He destroys, punishes, or inflicts harm upon one of His allies. “Thou wilt not find folk who believe in Allah and the Last Day loving those who oppose Allah and His messenger, even though they be their fathers or their sons or their brethren or their clan. As for such, He hath written faith upon their hearts and hath strengthened them with a Spirit from Him, and He will bring them into Gardens underneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide. Allah is well pleased with them, and they are well pleased with Him. They are Allah's party. Lo! is it not Allah's party who are the successful?” (58:22) “Thou wilt not find folk who believe in Allah and the Last Day loving those who oppose Allah and His messenger, even though they be their fathers or their sons or their brethren or their clan. As for such, He hath written faith upon their hearts and hath strengthened them with a Spirit from Him, and He will bring them into Gardens underneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide. Allah is well pleased with them, and they are well pleased with Him. They are Allah's party. Allah is well pleased with them, and they are well pleased with Him. They are Allah's party. Lo! is it not Allah's party who are the successful?” (58:22) You will not find, O Muhammad, a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day loving those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even if they are their closest kin. Lo! is it not Allah's party who are the successful?” (58:22) Allah has inscribed faith upon their hearts, strengthened them with a proof, light, and guidance from Him, and will admit them into gardens beneath whose trees rivers flow, abiding therein forever. Allah is pleased with them for their obedience to Him in this world, and they are pleased with Him in the Hereafter for His admitting them into Paradise. Those who possess these qualities are the soldiers of Allah and His allies. Verily, the soldiers of Allah and His allies are the ones who remain and succeed by attaining what they sought and pursued through their allegiance in this world and their obedience to their Lord.
