A summary of the Tafsir of al-Tabari.

Surah al-Ma'un.
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
“Hast thou observed him who belieth religion?” (107:1)
That is the one who repels the orphan.
And does not encourage the feeding of the poor.
So woe to those who pray.
“Who are heedless of their prayer;” (107:5)
Those who show off.
And withhold simple assistance.
Have you seen, O Muhammad, the one who denies the reward and punishment of Allah?
He does not obey His commands or prohibitions.
This is the one who denies the Recompense.
He is the one who pushes the orphan away from his rights and oppresses him.
And he does not urge others to feed the needy.
The 'Wail' is a valley flowing with the pus of the people of Hell.
It is for the hypocrites who pray.
They do not seek the pleasure of Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, through their prayer.
They are heedless of their prayer, neglecting it.
They are distracted from it and preoccupied with other things.
Sometimes they neglect it entirely, and at other times they miss its proper time.
Those who show off to people with their prayers when they perform them.
This is because they do not pray out of desire for reward or fear of punishment.
Rather, they pray only so that the believers may see them.
So the believers think they are among them.
And thus they refrain from shedding their blood or taking their families captive.
These are the hypocrites who lived during the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.
They harbor disbelief inwardly while manifesting Islam outwardly.
They withhold from people the common items they borrow among themselves.
They withhold from the needy and the destitute the rights that Allah has made obligatory upon them from their wealth.
For all of that falls under the category of benefits.
Which people utilize from one another.
