Then, his love for me 00:01:28.349 --> 00:01:30.349 continued to intensify and grow 00:01:30.349 --> 00:01:32.349 with the passing of days, until 00:01:32.349 --> 00:01:34.349 he confined me to the house out of fear 00:01:34.349 --> 00:01:36.349 for me, just as one confines 00:01:36.349 --> 00:01:38.349 young girls. I strove 00:01:38.349 --> 00:01:40.349 in Magianism (Zoroastrianism) until 00:01:40.349 --> 00:01:42.349 I became the caretaker of the fire we 00:01:42.349 --> 00:01:44.349 used to worship, 00:01:44.349 --> 00:01:46.349 and the task of keeping it lit was entrusted to me 00:01:46.349 --> 00:01:48.349 so that it would not flicker for a moment, 00:01:48.349 --> 00:01:50.379 neither by night nor by day. 00:01:50.379 --> 00:01:52.379 My father owned a vast 00:01:52.379 --> 00:01:54.379 estate that yielded us 00:01:54.379 --> 00:01:56.379 a great harvest. My father 00:01:56.379 --> 00:01:58.379 would oversee it and gather the yield. 00:01:59.379 --> 00:02:01.379 Then, on one occasion, 00:02:01.379 --> 00:02:03.379 he was preoccupied from going to the estate, 00:02:03.379 --> 00:02:05.379 so he said, 00:02:05.379 --> 00:02:07.379 'My son, 00:02:07.379 --> 00:02:09.379 I have been preoccupied from the estate by what you see, 00:02:09.379 --> 00:02:11.379 so go to it 00:02:11.379 --> 00:02:13.379 and take charge of its affairs for me today.' 00:02:13.379 --> 00:02:15.379 I went out, heading toward our estate. 00:02:15.379 --> 00:02:17.379 While I was on the way, 00:02:17.379 --> 00:02:19.379 I passed by a church 00:02:19.379 --> 00:02:21.379 of the Christians, 00:02:21.379 --> 00:02:23.379 and I heard their voices inside 00:02:23.379 --> 00:02:25.379 as they were praying. 00:02:25.379 --> 00:02:27.379 This caught my attention. 00:02:27.379 --> 00:02:29.379 I had known nothing of 00:02:29.379 --> 00:02:31.379 the affairs of the Christians or the affairs 00:02:31.379 --> 00:02:33.379 of others among the followers of religions, 00:02:33.379 --> 00:02:35.379 because of how long my father had kept me 00:02:35.379 --> 00:02:37.379 hidden from people in our house. 00:02:37.379 --> 00:02:39.379 When I heard their voices, 00:02:39.379 --> 00:02:41.379 I entered to see what they were doing. 00:02:41.379 --> 00:02:43.379 When I observed them, 00:02:43.379 --> 00:02:45.379 their prayer impressed me, 00:02:45.379 --> 00:02:47.379 and I felt a desire for their religion. 00:02:47.379 --> 00:02:49.379 I said, 00:02:49.379 --> 00:02:51.379 'By Allah, this is better than what 00:02:51.379 --> 00:02:53.379 we are upon.' By Allah, 00:02:53.379 --> 00:02:55.379 I did not leave them until the sun set, 00:02:55.379 --> 00:02:57.379 and I did not go to 00:02:57.379 --> 00:02:59.379 my father's estate. 00:02:59.379 --> 00:03:01.379 Then I asked them, 00:03:01.379 --> 00:03:03.379 'Where is the origin of this religion?' 00:03:03.379 --> 00:03:05.379 They said, 'In the land of Ash-Sham (Syria).' 00:03:05.379 --> 00:03:07.419 When night fell, 00:03:07.419 --> 00:03:09.419 I returned to our house. 00:03:09.419 --> 00:03:11.419 My father met me and asked me 00:03:11.419 --> 00:03:13.419 about what I had done. 00:03:13.419 --> 00:03:15.419 I said, 'O my father, 00:03:15.419 --> 00:03:17.419 I passed by some people 00:03:17.419 --> 00:03:19.419 praying in a church of theirs, 00:03:19.419 --> 00:03:21.419 and I was impressed by what I saw of their religion, 00:03:21.419 --> 00:03:23.419 and I remained with them 00:03:23.419 --> 00:03:25.419 until the sun set.' 00:03:25.419 --> 00:03:27.419 My father was alarmed by what I had done 00:03:27.419 --> 00:03:29.419 and said, 'O my son, 00:03:29.419 --> 00:03:31.419 there is no good in that religion. 00:03:31.419 --> 00:03:33.419 Your religion 00:03:33.419 --> 00:03:35.419 and the religion of your forefathers is better than it.' 00:03:35.419 --> 00:03:37.419 I said, 'No, 00:03:37.419 --> 00:03:39.419 by Allah, their religion 00:03:39.419 --> 00:03:41.419 is better than our religion.' 00:03:41.419 --> 00:03:43.419 My father feared what I was saying 00:03:43.419 --> 00:03:45.419 and worried that I would apostatize from my religion, 00:03:45.419 --> 00:03:47.419 so he confined me to the house 00:03:47.419 --> 00:03:49.419 and put shackles on my legs. 00:03:49.419 --> 00:03:51.419 When the opportunity 00:03:51.419 --> 00:03:53.419 presented itself to me, 00:03:53.419 --> 00:03:55.419 I sent word to the Christians, saying, 00:03:55.419 --> 00:03:57.419 'If a caravan comes to you 00:03:57.419 --> 00:03:59.419 intending to go to the land of Ash-Sham, 00:03:59.419 --> 00:04:01.419 then inform me.' 00:04:01.419 --> 00:04:03.419 It was only a short while 00:04:03.419 --> 00:04:05.419 before a caravan arrived 00:04:05.419 --> 00:04:07.419 heading to Ash-Sham, 00:04:07.419 --> 00:04:09.419 and they informed me of it. 00:04:09.419 --> 00:04:11.419 I devised a trick regarding my shackles until I removed them, 00:04:11.419 --> 00:04:13.419 and I went out with them in secret 00:04:13.419 --> 00:04:15.419 until we reached 00:04:15.419 --> 00:04:17.420 the land of Ash-Sham. 00:04:17.420 --> 00:04:19.420 When we arrived there, 00:04:19.420 --> 00:04:21.420 I asked, 'Who is the best man 00:04:21.420 --> 00:04:23.420 among the people of this religion?' 00:04:23.420 --> 00:04:25.420 They said, 'The bishop, 00:04:25.420 --> 00:04:27.420 the caretaker of the church.' 00:04:27.420 --> 00:04:29.420 So I went to him and said, 00:04:29.420 --> 00:04:31.420 'I have developed a desire for Christianity, 00:04:31.420 --> 00:04:33.420 and I would like to stay with you, 00:04:33.420 --> 00:04:35.420 serve you, learn from you, 00:04:35.420 --> 00:04:37.420 and pray with you.' 00:04:37.420 --> 00:04:39.420 He said, 'Enter.' 00:04:39.420 --> 00:04:41.420 I entered and began to serve him. 00:04:41.420 --> 00:04:43.420 Then it was not long 00:04:43.420 --> 00:04:45.420 before I realized that the man 00:04:45.420 --> 00:04:47.420 was a man of evil; 00:04:47.420 --> 00:04:49.420 he would command his followers to give charity 00:04:49.420 --> 00:04:51.420 and entice them with its reward, 00:04:51.420 --> 00:04:53.420 but when they gave him 00:04:53.420 --> 00:04:55.420 something to spend in the way of Allah, 00:04:55.420 --> 00:04:57.420 he would hoard it for himself 00:04:57.420 --> 00:04:59.420 and give the poor and the needy 00:04:59.420 --> 00:05:01.420 nothing of it, 00:05:01.420 --> 00:05:03.420 until he had collected seven jars 00:05:03.420 --> 00:05:05.420 of gold. 00:05:05.420 --> 00:05:07.420 I despised him with a deep hatred 00:05:07.420 --> 00:05:09.420 for what I saw of him. 00:05:09.420 --> 00:05:11.420 Then it was not long before he died. 00:05:11.420 --> 00:05:13.420 The Christians gathered to bury him, 00:05:13.420 --> 00:05:15.420 and I said to them, 00:05:15.420 --> 00:05:17.420 'He was a man of evil; 00:05:17.420 --> 00:05:19.420 he would command you to give charity and entice you 00:05:19.420 --> 00:05:21.420 to do so, but when you brought it 00:05:21.420 --> 00:05:23.420 to him, he would hoard it for himself 00:05:23.420 --> 00:05:25.420 and give the needy 00:05:25.420 --> 00:05:27.420 nothing of it.' 00:05:27.420 --> 00:05:29.420 They said, 'How did you know that?' 00:05:29.420 --> 00:05:31.420 I said, 'I 00:05:31.420 --> 00:05:33.420 will show you his treasure.' 00:05:33.420 --> 00:05:35.420 They said, 'Yes, 00:05:35.420 --> 00:05:37.420 show it to us.' I showed them 00:05:37.420 --> 00:05:39.420 its location, and they extracted 00:05:39.420 --> 00:05:41.420 from it seven jars filled 00:05:41.420 --> 00:05:43.420 with gold and silver. 00:05:43.420 --> 00:05:45.420 When they saw it, they said, 00:05:45.420 --> 00:05:47.420 'By Allah, we will not bury him.' 00:05:47.420 --> 00:05:49.420 Then they crucified him and pelted him 00:05:49.420 --> 00:05:51.420 with stones. Then, 00:05:51.420 --> 00:05:53.420 not long after, 00:05:53.420 --> 00:05:55.420 they appointed another man 00:05:55.420 --> 00:05:57.420 in his place, and I stayed with him. 00:05:57.420 --> 00:05:59.420 I have never seen a man 00:05:59.420 --> 00:06:01.420 more ascetic regarding this world, 00:06:01.420 --> 00:06:03.420 nor more desirous of the Hereafter, 00:06:03.420 --> 00:06:05.420 nor more diligent in 00:06:05.420 --> 00:06:07.420 worship by night and day. 00:06:07.420 --> 00:06:09.420 I loved him with a great 00:06:09.420 --> 00:06:11.420 love and stayed with him. 00:06:11.420 --> 00:06:13.420 When death approached him, 00:06:13.420 --> 00:06:15.420 I said to him, 00:06:15.420 --> 00:06:17.420 'O so-and-so, 00:06:17.420 --> 00:06:19.420 to whom do you entrust me? 00:06:19.420 --> 00:06:21.420 And with whom do you advise me to be after you?' 00:06:21.420 --> 00:06:23.420 He said, 00:06:23.420 --> 00:06:25.420 'O my son, 00:06:25.420 --> 00:06:27.420 I do not know anyone who is upon what I was upon, 00:06:27.420 --> 00:06:29.420 except for a man in Mosul; 00:06:29.420 --> 00:06:31.420 he is so-and-so. 00:06:31.420 --> 00:06:33.420 He has not distorted or changed. 00:06:33.420 --> 00:06:35.420 So join him.' 00:06:35.420 --> 00:06:37.420 When my companion died, 00:06:37.420 --> 00:06:39.420 I joined the man in Mosul. 00:06:39.420 --> 00:06:41.420 When I arrived to him, 00:06:41.420 --> 00:06:43.420 I told him my story 00:06:43.420 --> 00:06:45.420 and said to him, 'So-and-so 00:06:45.420 --> 00:06:47.420 advised me at his death that I should 00:06:47.420 --> 00:06:49.420 join you and informed me that you are 00:06:49.420 --> 00:06:51.420 holding fast to what he was upon 00:06:51.420 --> 00:06:53.420 of the truth.' He said, 00:06:53.420 --> 00:06:55.420 'Stay with me.' 00:06:55.420 --> 00:06:57.420 I stayed with him and found him 00:06:57.420 --> 00:06:59.420 to be in the best of states. 00:06:59.420 --> 00:07:01.420 Then it was not long before he died. 00:07:01.420 --> 00:07:03.420 When death approached him, 00:07:03.420 --> 00:07:05.420 I said to him, 00:07:05.420 --> 00:07:07.420 'O so-and-so, the decree of Allah 00:07:07.420 --> 00:07:09.420 You know what Allah has decreed regarding my situation. 00:07:09.420 --> 00:07:11.420 And you know what you know of my affairs. 00:07:11.420 --> 00:07:13.420 So to whom do you 00:07:13.420 --> 00:07:15.420 recommend I go? He said, 00:07:15.420 --> 00:07:17.420 "My son, 00:07:17.420 --> 00:07:19.420 by Allah, I do not know of any man who is upon 00:07:19.420 --> 00:07:21.420 the same path we were upon, 00:07:21.420 --> 00:07:23.420 except for a man in Mosul, 00:07:23.420 --> 00:07:25.420 and he is so-and-so; so join him." 00:07:25.420 --> 00:07:27.420 When the man was hidden 00:07:27.420 --> 00:07:29.420 in his grave, I joined 00:07:29.420 --> 00:07:31.420 the companion in Mosul, 00:07:31.420 --> 00:07:33.420 and I informed him of my story and what 00:07:33.420 --> 00:07:35.420 my master had instructed me to do. 00:07:35.420 --> 00:07:37.420 He said to me, "Stay with us." 00:07:37.420 --> 00:07:39.420 So I stayed with him and found him 00:07:39.420 --> 00:07:41.420 to be upon the same 00:07:41.420 --> 00:07:43.420 goodness as his two predecessors. 00:07:43.420 --> 00:07:45.420 By Allah, it was not long before 00:07:45.420 --> 00:07:47.420 death came to him. When death 00:07:47.420 --> 00:07:49.420 approached him, I said to him, 00:07:49.420 --> 00:07:51.420 "You have known of my affairs what 00:07:51.420 --> 00:07:53.420 you have known, so to whom do you 00:07:53.420 --> 00:07:55.420 recommend I go?" He said, 00:07:55.420 --> 00:07:57.420 "My son, 00:07:57.420 --> 00:07:59.420 by Allah, I do not know of anyone 00:07:59.420 --> 00:08:01.420 who remains upon our path except 00:08:01.420 --> 00:08:03.420 for a man in Amorium, 00:08:03.420 --> 00:08:05.420 so join him." 00:08:05.420 --> 00:08:07.420 So I joined him, 00:08:07.420 --> 00:08:09.420 and I informed him of my story. 00:08:09.420 --> 00:08:11.420 He said, "Stay." 00:08:11.420 --> 00:08:13.420 So I stayed with a man 00:08:13.420 --> 00:08:15.420 who was, by Allah, upon the guidance 00:08:15.420 --> 00:08:17.420 of his companions. I had acquired 00:08:17.420 --> 00:08:19.420 while with him some cows and a flock of sheep. 00:08:19.420 --> 00:08:21.420 Then it was not long before there befell him 00:08:21.420 --> 00:08:23.420 what had befallen his companions 00:08:23.420 --> 00:08:25.420 by the decree of Allah. When 00:08:25.420 --> 00:08:27.420 death approached him, I said to him, 00:08:27.420 --> 00:08:29.420 "You know of my affairs 00:08:29.420 --> 00:08:31.420 what you know, so to whom do you 00:08:31.420 --> 00:08:33.419 recommend I go, and what do you command me 00:08:33.419 --> 00:08:35.419 to do?" 00:08:35.419 --> 00:08:37.419 He said, "My son, 00:08:37.419 --> 00:08:39.419 by Allah, I do not know that there is 00:08:39.419 --> 00:08:41.419 anyone left among the people upon the face 00:08:41.419 --> 00:08:43.419 of the earth who holds fast 00:08:43.419 --> 00:08:45.419 to what we were upon. 00:08:45.419 --> 00:08:47.419 However, a time has cast its shadow 00:08:47.419 --> 00:08:49.419 in which there will emerge in the land 00:08:49.419 --> 00:08:51.419 of the Arabs a Prophet who is sent 00:08:51.419 --> 00:08:53.419 with the religion of Ibrahim, then he will migrate 00:08:53.419 --> 00:08:55.419 from his land to a land between 00:08:55.419 --> 00:08:57.419 two lava fields, where there are palm trees. 00:08:57.419 --> 00:08:59.419 He has signs that are not hidden: 00:09:00.419 --> 00:09:02.419 he eats of the gift, 00:09:02.419 --> 00:09:04.419 but he does not eat of the zakat, 00:09:04.419 --> 00:09:06.419 and between his shoulder blades is the seal of prophethood. 00:09:06.419 --> 00:09:08.419 So if you are able to reach 00:09:08.419 --> 00:09:10.419 that land, then do so." 00:09:10.419 --> 00:09:12.419 Then his time came. 00:09:12.419 --> 00:09:14.419 I remained after him 00:09:14.419 --> 00:09:16.419 in Amorium for a time, 00:09:16.419 --> 00:09:18.419 until a group of merchants 00:09:18.419 --> 00:09:20.419 from the Arab tribe of Kalb passed by. 00:09:20.419 --> 00:09:22.419 I said to them, 00:09:22.419 --> 00:09:24.419 "If you take me with you 00:09:24.419 --> 00:09:26.419 to the land of the Arabs, 00:09:26.419 --> 00:09:28.419 I will give you these cows and my flock of sheep." 00:09:28.419 --> 00:09:30.419 They said, "Yes, 00:09:30.419 --> 00:09:32.419 we will take you." 00:09:32.419 --> 00:09:34.419 So I gave them to them, 00:09:34.419 --> 00:09:36.419 and they took me with them. 00:09:36.419 --> 00:09:38.419 Until, when we reached Wadi al-Qura, 00:09:38.419 --> 00:09:40.419 they betrayed me and sold me 00:09:40.419 --> 00:09:42.419 to a man of the Jews. 00:09:42.419 --> 00:09:44.419 I entered into his service, 00:09:44.419 --> 00:09:46.419 and it was not long before a cousin of his 00:09:46.419 --> 00:09:48.419 from the tribe of Banu Qurayza 00:09:48.419 --> 00:09:50.419 came and bought me from him, 00:09:50.419 --> 00:09:52.419 and he took me with him to Yathrib. 00:09:52.419 --> 00:09:54.419 I saw the palm trees that my companion 00:09:54.419 --> 00:09:56.419 in Amorium had mentioned to me, 00:09:56.419 --> 00:09:58.419 and I recognized the city by the description 00:09:58.419 --> 00:10:00.419 he had given me. 00:10:00.419 --> 00:10:02.419 I stayed there with him. 00:10:02.419 --> 00:10:04.419 The Prophet was, at that time, 00:10:04.419 --> 00:10:06.419 calling his people in Makkah, 00:10:06.419 --> 00:10:08.419 but I did not hear any mention of him 00:10:08.419 --> 00:10:10.419 due to my preoccupation with the duties 00:10:10.419 --> 00:10:12.580 of slavery. 00:10:12.580 --> 00:10:14.580 Then it was not long before the Messenger migrated 00:10:14.580 --> 00:10:16.580 to Yathrib. 00:10:16.580 --> 00:10:18.580 By Allah, I was at the top of a palm tree 00:10:18.580 --> 00:10:20.580 for my master, doing some work, 00:10:20.580 --> 00:10:22.580 and my master was sitting 00:10:22.580 --> 00:10:24.580 beneath it, when his cousin 00:10:24.580 --> 00:10:26.580 approached and said to him, 00:10:26.580 --> 00:10:28.580 "May Allah fight the Banu Qayla! 00:10:28.580 --> 00:10:30.580 By Allah, they are now 00:10:30.580 --> 00:10:32.580 gathered at Quba 00:10:32.580 --> 00:10:34.580 around a man who arrived among them 00:10:34.580 --> 00:10:36.580 today from Makkah, 00:10:36.580 --> 00:10:38.580 claiming that he is a Prophet." 00:10:38.580 --> 00:10:40.580 No sooner had I heard his words than 00:10:40.580 --> 00:10:42.580 I was seized by something like a fever, 00:10:42.580 --> 00:10:44.580 and I trembled violently, 00:10:44.580 --> 00:10:46.580 until I feared that I would 00:10:46.580 --> 00:10:48.580 fall upon my master. 00:10:48.580 --> 00:10:50.580 I hastened to descend from the palm tree, 00:10:50.580 --> 00:10:52.580 and I began saying to the man, 00:10:52.580 --> 00:10:54.580 "What are you saying? 00:10:54.580 --> 00:10:56.580 Repeat the news to me." 00:10:56.580 --> 00:10:58.580 My master became angry and struck me a 00:10:58.580 --> 00:11:00.580 severe blow and said to me, 00:11:00.580 --> 00:11:02.580 "What is this to you? 00:11:02.580 --> 00:11:04.580 Return to the work you were doing." 00:11:04.580 --> 00:11:06.580 When evening came, 00:11:06.580 --> 00:11:08.580 I took something of the dates 00:11:08.580 --> 00:11:10.580 that I had gathered, 00:11:10.580 --> 00:11:12.580 and I headed to where the 00:11:12.580 --> 00:11:14.580 Messenger was staying. I entered 00:11:14.580 --> 00:11:16.580 upon him and said, "It 00:11:16.580 --> 00:11:18.580 has reached me that you are a righteous man 00:11:18.580 --> 00:11:20.580 and that you have companions 00:11:20.580 --> 00:11:22.580 who are in need. 00:11:22.580 --> 00:11:24.580 This is something I had 00:11:24.580 --> 00:11:26.580 for zakat, and I saw that you are 00:11:26.580 --> 00:11:28.580 more deserving of it than others." 00:11:28.580 --> 00:11:30.580 Then I brought it near to him. 00:11:30.580 --> 00:11:32.580 He said to his companions, 00:11:32.580 --> 00:11:34.580 "Eat," but he withheld his hand 00:11:34.580 --> 00:11:36.580 and did not eat. I said 00:11:36.580 --> 00:11:38.580 to myself, "This is 00:11:38.580 --> 00:11:40.580 one." I threw myself upon him, 00:12:32.580 --> 00:12:34.580 kissing him and weeping. 00:12:34.580 --> 00:12:36.580 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said, 00:12:36.580 --> 00:12:38.580 "What is your story?" 00:12:38.580 --> 00:12:40.580 So I told him my story, 00:12:40.580 --> 00:12:42.580 and he was amazed by it, 00:12:42.580 --> 00:12:44.580 and he was pleased that his 00:12:44.580 --> 00:12:46.580 companions should hear it from me. 00:12:46.580 --> 00:12:48.580 So I let them hear it, 00:12:48.580 --> 00:12:50.580 and they were amazed by it with the greatest amazement, 00:12:50.580 --> 00:12:52.580 and they were pleased with it with the greatest pleasure. 00:12:52.580 --> 00:12:54.580 So peace be upon 00:12:54.580 --> 00:12:56.580 Salman al-Farisi, 00:12:56.580 --> 00:12:58.580 the day he stood searching for the truth 00:12:58.580 --> 00:13:00.580 in every place. 00:13:00.580 --> 00:13:02.580 And peace be upon Salman al-Farisi, 00:13:02.580 --> 00:13:04.580 the day he recognized the truth 00:13:04.580 --> 00:13:06.580 and believed in it with the firmest 00:13:06.580 --> 00:13:08.580 faith.
