00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:02.500
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

00:00:04.589 --> 00:00:09.089
The story of Yusuf (peace be upon him) and the wife of al-Aziz.

00:00:10.679 --> 00:00:13.679
What happens when you lose your modesty?

00:00:14.779 --> 00:00:17.280
Modesty is a branch of faith,

00:00:17.780 --> 00:00:20.280
and modesty brings nothing but good.

00:00:21.280 --> 00:00:24.280
It is among the most beautiful acquired qualities of a woman,

00:00:24.780 --> 00:00:27.780
for it stands between two noble virtues of womanhood:

00:00:28.280 --> 00:00:29.780
concealment and chastity.

00:00:30.379 --> 00:00:32.380
Modesty is cultivated within the soul,

00:00:32.380 --> 00:00:33.880
increases through modesty of dress and concealment,

00:00:34.380 --> 00:00:35.880
is torn away by exposure and unclothedness,

00:00:36.380 --> 00:00:39.380
and serves as an impenetrable barrier against violations of chastity.

00:00:40.200 --> 00:00:43.700
Allah Almighty mentioned modesty in the Noble Qur'an

00:00:44.200 --> 00:00:47.200
in the context of a woman, uniquely highlighting her among believers,

00:00:47.700 --> 00:00:48.700
where He said:

00:00:49.229 --> 00:01:00.229
“Then there came unto him one of the two women, walking shyly. She said: Lo! my father biddeth thee, that he may reward thee with a payment for that thou didst water (the flock) for us. Then, when he came unto him and told him the (whole) story, he said: Fear not! Thou hast escaped from the wrongdoing folk.” (28:25)

00:01:00.229 --> 00:01:09.230

00:01:09.730 --> 00:01:15.730

00:01:16.230 --> 00:01:17.730
"He said, 'Do not fear...'"

00:01:18.230 --> 00:01:21.730

00:01:22.230 --> 00:01:28.230
"One of the two women said, 'O my father, hire him...'"

00:01:28.230 --> 00:01:34.230
“One of the two women said: O my father! Hire him! For the best (man) that thou canst hire in the strong, the trustworthy.” (28:26)

00:01:34.730 --> 00:01:40.209
In this verse lies an indication of the importance of modesty in a woman's life,

00:01:40.709 --> 00:01:45.209
for a woman's modesty prevents many social corruptions

00:01:45.709 --> 00:01:47.709
that have become widespread and overwhelming today

00:01:48.209 --> 00:01:50.709
due to the loss of modesty among young women.

00:01:51.469 --> 00:01:54.969
Modesty is a virtue demanded of both men and women,

00:01:55.469 --> 00:01:57.969
as it restrains both from committing shameful acts;

00:01:58.500 --> 00:02:03.000
yet a woman is uniquely distinguished by the virtue of modesty more than a man,

00:02:03.500 --> 00:02:07.000
and its importance in her life is far greater than in a man's.

00:02:07.500 --> 00:02:11.060
Among the proofs of her distinction in modesty

00:02:11.560 --> 00:02:14.060
is that when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)

00:02:14.560 --> 00:02:17.060
was praised for the utmost degree of his modesty,

00:02:17.560 --> 00:02:20.060
he was compared to the modesty of a virgin in her private chamber.

00:02:20.560 --> 00:02:24.060
On the authority of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), he said:

00:02:24.560 --> 00:02:27.060
"The Prophet (peace be upon him)

00:02:27.560 --> 00:02:31.060
was more modest than a virgin in her private chamber."

00:02:31.560 --> 00:02:33.060
Related by al-Bukhari.

00:02:33.560 --> 00:02:36.659
Indeed, Islam is keen to safeguard a woman's modesty,

00:02:37.159 --> 00:02:40.159
and thus its legislations came to foster her modesty

00:02:40.659 --> 00:02:41.659
and preserve it.

00:02:42.159 --> 00:02:45.159
It did not instruct her to look at a man when he proposes to her,

00:02:45.659 --> 00:02:48.159
as it instructed the man to look at her,

00:02:48.659 --> 00:02:50.159
out of consideration for her modesty.

00:02:50.659 --> 00:02:54.159
It made her silence a sign of her consent to marry,

00:02:54.659 --> 00:02:59.159
because her modesty prevents her from openly expressing her desire for marriage.

00:02:59.659 --> 00:03:03.159
It also designated a specific time and place for women's learning,

00:03:03.659 --> 00:03:05.159
where men do not share the space with them,

00:03:05.659 --> 00:03:09.159
so that she feels no embarrassment in asking about her private matters.

00:03:09.659 --> 00:03:14.319
A woman's modesty is manifested in the way she walks in public streets,

00:03:14.819 --> 00:03:17.319
in the way she speaks to men,

00:03:17.819 --> 00:03:20.319
and in concealing her desire for marriage.

00:03:20.819 --> 00:03:23.319
All of that is mentioned in the words of the Exalted:

00:03:48.110 --> 00:03:55.610
"One of the two women said, 'O my father, hire him...'"

00:03:56.110 --> 00:04:02.110
“One of the two women said: O my father! Hire him! For the best (man) that thou canst hire in the strong, the trustworthy.” (28:26)

00:04:02.610 --> 00:04:05.110
Rather, she is modest even with her husband;

00:04:05.610 --> 00:04:08.110
she does not explicitly declare her physical desire for him

00:04:08.610 --> 00:04:10.610
in the direct manner,

00:04:11.650 --> 00:04:13.650
in the direct manner,

00:04:14.650 --> 00:04:17.149
she does not explicitly declare her physical desire for him

00:04:17.649 --> 00:04:19.149
as he might explicitly declare it,

00:04:19.649 --> 00:04:22.149
but rather hints at it by adorning herself for him

00:04:22.649 --> 00:04:24.149
and behaving playfully and alluringly before him.

00:04:24.720 --> 00:04:28.220
Therefore, the preservation of her modesty even after marriage

00:04:28.720 --> 00:04:30.220
is among the greatest blessings upon a husband,

00:04:30.720 --> 00:04:32.220
and among the finest characteristics

00:04:32.720 --> 00:04:34.720
with which she adorns herself for her husband.

00:04:35.910 --> 00:04:37.410
A woman's modesty protects her

00:04:37.910 --> 00:04:39.910
from falling into the seduction of men;

00:04:40.410 --> 00:04:41.910
for she is more capable than a man

00:04:41.910 --> 00:04:44.410
of controlling herself and her desires,

00:04:44.910 --> 00:04:46.910
because a woman's true yearning

00:04:47.410 --> 00:04:49.410
lies in emotional elevation—

00:04:49.910 --> 00:04:51.410
in matters of love, affection,

00:04:51.910 --> 00:04:53.910
tenderness, and gentle words.

00:04:54.540 --> 00:04:57.540
She inclines toward satisfying these emotional needs

00:04:58.040 --> 00:05:00.540
far more than she inclines toward physical gratification,

00:05:01.040 --> 00:05:02.040
unlike a man,

00:05:02.540 --> 00:05:04.540
who seeks physical pleasure

00:05:05.040 --> 00:05:07.040
more than verbal intimacy.

00:05:07.540 --> 00:05:10.540
Thus, my dear daughter, you are beautiful through your modesty;

00:05:11.040 --> 00:05:14.040
so what happens if you lose this modesty?

00:05:14.819 --> 00:05:17.319
We have in the story of Yusuf and the wife of al-Aziz

00:05:17.819 --> 00:05:19.819
an admonition and an example of a woman

00:05:20.319 --> 00:05:21.319
who loses her modesty

00:05:21.819 --> 00:05:23.819
for the sake of a forbidden lust.

00:05:24.319 --> 00:05:26.420
The statement "Come on, take me!"

00:05:26.920 --> 00:05:29.420
would rarely ever be uttered by a wife to her husband,

00:05:29.920 --> 00:05:31.420
because it is exceedingly explicit

00:05:31.920 --> 00:05:33.420
in expressing her desire for the man.

00:05:33.920 --> 00:05:36.420
Yet when a woman loses her modesty,

00:05:36.920 --> 00:05:40.420
such words and even worse proceed from her.

00:05:40.980 --> 00:05:43.480
Arranging a secluded place for indecency

00:05:43.980 --> 00:05:45.980
is usually initiated by the man,

00:05:46.480 --> 00:05:47.480
not the woman;

00:05:47.980 --> 00:05:50.480
but when a woman loses her modesty,

00:05:50.980 --> 00:05:52.480
she undertakes that herself.

00:05:52.980 --> 00:05:54.980
For this reason, it was said of her:

00:05:55.480 --> 00:05:56.980
"And she bolted the doors."

00:05:57.480 --> 00:06:01.269
A woman's fear of being exposed before people

00:06:01.769 --> 00:06:03.269
is entirely natural,

00:06:03.769 --> 00:06:05.269
even if she were passionately infatuated

00:06:05.769 --> 00:06:07.269
and committing fornication with her lover.

00:06:07.769 --> 00:06:10.769
But when a woman loses her modesty,

00:06:11.269 --> 00:06:13.269
women in the city began to say:

00:06:13.769 --> 00:06:17.269
"The wife of al-Aziz is attempting to seduce her slave-boy;

00:06:17.769 --> 00:06:19.269
he has impassioned her with love."

00:06:19.769 --> 00:06:22.769
“And women in the city said: The ruler's wife is asking of her slave-boy an ill-deed. Indeed he has smitten her to the heart with love. We behold her in plain aberration.” (12:30)

00:06:23.269 --> 00:06:26.769
Yet she neither cared about their talk nor was she affected by it.

00:06:27.370 --> 00:06:30.370
Lust had so toyed with the mind of the wife of al-Aziz

00:06:30.870 --> 00:06:34.370
that it blinded her to every aspect of the virtue of modesty.

00:06:34.870 --> 00:06:37.870
So she invited the women who spoke ill of her honor

00:06:38.370 --> 00:06:39.370
and spread news about her,

00:06:39.870 --> 00:06:41.870
so they could see the one with whom she was infatuated.

00:06:42.370 --> 00:06:43.870
She sent for them,

00:06:44.370 --> 00:06:46.370
prepared a banquet for them,

00:06:46.870 --> 00:06:49.870
“And when she heard of their sly talk, she sent to them and prepared for them a cushioned couch (to lie on at the feast) and gave to every one of them a knife and said (to Joseph): Come out unto them! And when they saw him they exalted him and cut their hands, exclaiming: Allah Blameless! This is no a human being. This is not other than some gracious angel.” (12:31)

00:06:50.370 --> 00:06:52.370
and said, "Come out before them."

00:06:52.870 --> 00:06:56.870

00:06:57.370 --> 00:07:00.370
And they said, "Allah forbid! This is not a human being..."

00:07:00.870 --> 00:07:03.870

00:07:04.459 --> 00:07:06.959
She then declared her triumph over them,

00:07:07.459 --> 00:07:07.959
saying:

00:07:08.459 --> 00:07:10.959
“She said: This is he on whose account ye blamed me. I asked of him an evil act, but he proved continent, but if he do not my behest he verily shall be imprisoned, and verily shall be of those brought low.” (12:32)

00:07:11.459 --> 00:07:14.959
"You could not bear seeing him just once

00:07:15.459 --> 00:07:17.459
without cutting your hands,

00:07:17.959 --> 00:07:19.459
losing your composure,

00:07:19.959 --> 00:07:21.459
and being overcome with bewilderment!

00:07:22.459 --> 00:07:25.459
How then must it be for me, living with him,

00:07:25.959 --> 00:07:28.459
seeing him coming and going,

00:07:28.959 --> 00:07:29.959
and speaking with him?

00:07:30.459 --> 00:07:33.959
Can I then be blamed for my heart’s infatuation with him after that?"

00:07:34.459 --> 00:07:35.529
She said this

00:07:35.529 --> 00:07:39.029
as though she had never known modesty a single day in her life.

00:07:39.529 --> 00:07:41.029
For such speech

00:07:41.529 --> 00:07:43.029
would never proceed from a woman who possesses

00:07:43.529 --> 00:07:46.029
even an atom's weight of modesty.

00:07:46.529 --> 00:07:48.220
Then she openly publicized her sin,

00:07:48.720 --> 00:07:50.220
announced her deed,

00:07:50.720 --> 00:07:53.220
and confessed before them, saying:

00:07:53.720 --> 00:07:57.220
"I did indeed seek to seduce him, but he firmly abstained."

00:07:57.720 --> 00:08:01.220
Such public flaunting before people does not occur

00:08:01.720 --> 00:08:04.220
except from one who has lost all modesty;

00:08:04.220 --> 00:08:06.750
she cares nothing for what people say about her

00:08:07.250 --> 00:08:08.750
and pays no heed to it,

00:08:09.250 --> 00:08:11.750
for her sole concern is fulfilling her lust

00:08:12.250 --> 00:08:13.750
with the one who captivated her.

00:08:14.319 --> 00:08:14.819
What is apparent

00:08:15.319 --> 00:08:17.819
is that modesty had vanished from her palace

00:08:18.319 --> 00:08:18.819
and from those around her

00:08:19.319 --> 00:08:20.819
who lived with her in the palace.

00:08:21.319 --> 00:08:24.819
She persisted in trying to seduce Yusuf,

00:08:25.319 --> 00:08:27.819
announcing it openly and insisting upon it;

00:08:28.319 --> 00:08:31.819
no modesty prevented her from public declarations,

00:08:31.819 --> 00:08:34.320
nor was there a man in the house who felt protective jealousy or shame.

00:08:34.820 --> 00:08:38.320
Rather, the matter escalated to threatening Yusuf with imprisonment

00:08:38.820 --> 00:08:41.320
if he did not do what she demanded of him,

00:08:41.820 --> 00:08:42.320
for she said:

00:08:42.820 --> 00:08:45.320
"And if he does not do what I order him,

00:08:45.820 --> 00:08:49.320
he will surely be imprisoned and will be among the disgraced."

00:08:49.820 --> 00:08:51.440
Had the wife of al-Aziz possessed

00:08:51.940 --> 00:08:53.440
any measure of modesty,

00:08:53.940 --> 00:08:56.440
she would not have flaunted the intensity of her lust for Yusuf

00:08:56.940 --> 00:08:58.440
in this revolting manner,

00:08:58.940 --> 00:09:00.440
nor would she have said:

00:09:00.440 --> 00:09:03.940
"Either he commits indecency with me, or I will imprison him."

00:09:04.440 --> 00:09:07.009
By this overt threat to Yusuf—

00:09:07.509 --> 00:09:10.009
either indecency or imprisonment—

00:09:10.509 --> 00:09:13.009
she openly declared her utter lack of modesty,

00:09:13.509 --> 00:09:18.009
just as she demonstrated the strength of her dominance over her master, the Aziz of Egypt,

00:09:18.509 --> 00:09:21.009
who took no action to defend his honor,

00:09:21.509 --> 00:09:25.009
whom his wife manipulated according to her desires,

00:09:25.509 --> 00:09:28.009
and who decided whatever she wished within his realm of authority.

00:09:29.009 --> 00:09:31.509
This reveals the level of his protective jealousy

00:09:32.009 --> 00:09:33.509
and his guarding of his wife,

00:09:34.009 --> 00:09:36.509
whose lust toyed with her in his own palace,

00:09:37.009 --> 00:09:38.509
under his authority, and right before him,

00:09:39.009 --> 00:09:40.509
without him lifting a finger.

00:09:41.009 --> 00:09:44.570
Such is the condition in many palaces of the opulent:

00:09:45.070 --> 00:09:46.570
neither modesty nor protective jealousy,

00:09:47.070 --> 00:09:48.570
no authority over the woman,

00:09:49.070 --> 00:09:53.570
and the woman is the one ruling and dominating the man.

00:09:54.070 --> 00:09:55.730
O my sister,

00:09:55.730 --> 00:09:57.230
O my daughter:

00:09:57.730 --> 00:10:00.230
Hold fast to modesty and never let it go,

00:10:00.730 --> 00:10:02.230
for it is your true adornment in life;

00:10:02.730 --> 00:10:04.230
through it you are beautified,

00:10:04.730 --> 00:10:07.230
through it you are elevated and made happy,

00:10:07.730 --> 00:10:11.230
and through it you are protected from temptations, by Allah's leave.

00:10:11.730 --> 00:10:16.360
Beware of every call that diminishes your modesty or wounds it,

00:10:16.860 --> 00:10:19.360
or causes you to lose it and then regret.

00:10:19.860 --> 00:10:23.389
Do not heed the calls of those who claim to seek your welfare,

00:10:23.389 --> 00:10:27.889
nor the calls of those who claim your welfare and happiness lie outside the religion.

00:10:28.389 --> 00:10:30.389
Pay no heed to their claim

00:10:30.889 --> 00:10:32.389
that customs and traditions alone

00:10:32.889 --> 00:10:35.389
will protect you from falling into the mire of desires,

00:10:35.889 --> 00:10:37.889
leading you to cast off your religion and modesty

00:10:38.389 --> 00:10:40.889
and immerse yourself in their mixed arenas

00:10:41.389 --> 00:10:43.389
and shameless parties.

00:10:43.889 --> 00:10:45.889
Do not let them deceive you with the guise of entertainment,

00:10:46.389 --> 00:10:48.889
for they only want you to be a mindless body,

00:10:49.389 --> 00:10:51.889
crushing your future through indecency

00:10:51.889 --> 00:10:55.389
and slaying your hopes with their beastly whims,

00:10:55.889 --> 00:10:59.389
only to cast you aside, stricken with sorrows and grief.

00:10:59.889 --> 00:11:02.389
You have an admonition in those who came before you,

00:11:02.889 --> 00:11:05.389
so do not become an admonition for those who come after you.

00:11:05.889 --> 00:11:08.580
O my sister, O my daughter:

00:11:09.080 --> 00:11:11.580
Modesty is an act of the heart,

00:11:12.080 --> 00:11:13.580
and chastity is an act of the heart,

00:11:14.080 --> 00:11:18.580
Rather, their effects manifest upon your limbs and your outward appearance.

00:11:19.580 --> 00:11:23.080
We do not know the depth of modesty residing in your heart,

00:11:23.580 --> 00:11:27.080
nor the true extent of the chastity within your heart.

00:11:27.580 --> 00:11:32.080
Yet, we look at the signs you leave behind:

00:11:32.580 --> 00:11:33.080
in your attire,

00:11:33.580 --> 00:11:35.080
your manner of walking along the public road,

00:11:35.580 --> 00:11:37.080
your adornment,

00:11:37.580 --> 00:11:41.080
and how you conduct yourself with non-mahram men.

00:11:41.580 --> 00:11:45.080
These outwardly indicate the measure of your modesty and chastity.

00:11:46.179 --> 00:11:48.679
O my dear sister! O my dear daughter!

00:11:49.179 --> 00:11:52.679
Beware of becoming a source of temptation for the youth of the Ummah,

00:11:53.179 --> 00:11:56.679
for enemies have already assailed them from every quarter.

00:11:57.179 --> 00:12:00.710
Do not become an accomplice to Satan against them.

00:12:01.210 --> 00:12:03.710
Indeed, Joseph was saved from temptation,

00:12:04.210 --> 00:12:07.710
but we cannot guarantee that every young man of this Ummah will escape it.

00:12:08.210 --> 00:12:09.710
So stand with your Ummah,

00:12:10.210 --> 00:12:12.870
and do not stand against it.

00:12:13.370 --> 00:12:14.870
There is more to be said on this topic,

00:12:15.370 --> 00:12:17.870
and in an upcoming gathering, if Allah wills,

00:12:18.370 --> 00:12:23.320
we shall explore the story of Joseph with the wife of al-Aziz.
