When the Prophet, peace be upon him, learned of the apostasy of Musaylimah and his false claim to prophethood, he sent my son, Habib ibn Zayd, to him; when Musaylimah met him, he betrayed him, took him captive, and cut his body piece by piece until he died.

When the news of my son Habib’s martyrdom at the hands of Musaylimah reached me, I remained patient and sought reward from Allah, saying, "It was for a moment such as this that I prepared him, and I seek my reward from Allah."

After the death of the Prophet, peace be upon him, some tribes apostatized from Islam, so the Caliph Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, decided to fight them.

Indeed, battles known as the Ridda wars took place across most of the Arabian Peninsula, and I joined the army of Khalid ibn al-Walid, may Allah be pleased with him, which set out to fight Musaylimah, the killer of my son Habib.

I participated, along with my other son, Abdullah ibn Zayd, in the Battle of Yamama, the fiercest of the Ridda wars, where I fought valiantly, sustained eleven wounds, and lost my hand, yet I did not care.

I set out toward Musaylimah’s location and found that my son Abdullah had reached him before me and finished him off after Wahshi, may Allah be pleased with him, had struck him; I asked him, "Did you kill the disbeliever and avenge your brother?"
