They said: O Mary! Some of them have paid their vow by death (in battle), and some of them still are waiting; and they have not altered in the least;” (33:23) 00:02:33.020 --> 00:02:36.620 “Of the believers are men who are true to that which they covenanted with Allah. Some of them have paid their vow by death (in battle), and some of them still are waiting; and they have not altered in the least;” (33:23) 00:02:40.520 --> 00:02:44.919 "And among them are those who wait, 00:02:44.919 --> 00:02:48.810 and they have not altered [their commitment] in the least." 00:02:48.810 --> 00:02:53.409 This momentous ordeal that the noble Companions endured 00:02:53.409 --> 00:02:57.409 was detailed by Allah in Surah al-Ahzab— 00:02:57.409 --> 00:03:03.210 the very surah that addresses the most essential legal rulings pertaining to you, 00:03:03.210 --> 00:03:06.909 namely the hijab within homes, 00:03:06.909 --> 00:03:09.810 wearing the jilbab outside the home, 00:03:09.810 --> 00:03:13.409 the prohibition of tabarruj (wanton display) and softness in speech, 00:03:13.409 --> 00:03:16.509 and Allah’s choice for you to remain settled in the home 00:03:16.509 --> 00:03:19.409 so that your soul may find stability and peace, 00:03:19.409 --> 00:03:22.310 without prohibiting you from leaving the home 00:03:22.310 --> 00:03:26.099 for your personal and psychological needs. 00:03:26.099 --> 00:03:31.099 This surah, in which Allah clarified the rulings specific to you 00:03:31.099 --> 00:03:36.060 and outlined the ordeal of the Companions, described it by saying: 00:03:36.060 --> 00:03:41.759 “When they came upon you from above you and from below you, and when eyes grew wild and hearts reached to the throats, and ye were imagining vain thoughts concerning Allah.” (33:10) 00:03:41.759 --> 00:03:44.360 "...and from below you, 00:03:44.360 --> 00:03:49.860 and when eyes shifted [in fear], 00:03:49.860 --> 00:03:52.860 and hearts reached the throats, 00:03:52.860 --> 00:03:56.860 and you assumed about Allah various assumptions. 00:03:56.860 --> 00:03:59.860 There the believers were tested 00:03:59.860 --> 00:04:05.210 and severely shaken." 00:04:05.210 --> 00:04:09.210 It is this very same surah that exposed your most dangerous enemies, 00:04:09.210 --> 00:04:13.210 who lie in wait for you to entice and mislead you, 00:04:13.210 --> 00:04:14.710 and to divert you from your religion; 00:04:14.710 --> 00:04:17.709 namely, the hypocrites, 00:04:17.709 --> 00:04:20.209 those in whose hearts is a disease, 00:04:20.209 --> 00:04:23.209 and the agitators in society. 00:04:23.209 --> 00:04:25.709 These are the ones who wage war against 00:04:25.709 --> 00:04:28.709 the rulings that Allah has legislated for you, 00:04:28.709 --> 00:04:32.709 so Allah threatened them with the direst warnings, 00:04:32.709 --> 00:04:34.279 saying: 00:04:34.279 --> 00:04:39.279 “And those who malign believing men and believing women undeservedly, they bear the guilt of slander and manifest sin.” (33:58) 00:04:39.279 --> 00:04:43.279 "...without their having earned it, 00:04:43.279 --> 00:04:47.279 they have surely taken upon themselves a slander 00:04:47.279 --> 00:04:50.279 and a manifest sin. 00:04:50.279 --> 00:04:54.279 O Prophet! 00:04:54.279 --> 00:05:01.279 Tell your wives, your daughters, 00:05:01.279 --> 00:05:04.279 and the women of the believers 00:05:04.279 --> 00:05:06.279 to draw down over themselves 00:05:06.279 --> 00:05:09.279 their outer garments (jalabib). 00:05:09.279 --> 00:05:14.500 That is more suitable that they should be known 00:05:14.500 --> 00:05:17.500 and not be abused. 00:05:17.500 --> 00:05:21.500 And Allah is Ever-Forgiving, Most Merciful. 00:05:21.500 --> 00:05:25.500 If the hypocrites do not cease, 00:05:25.500 --> 00:05:29.500 and those in whose hearts is a disease, 00:05:29.500 --> 00:05:32.500 and the agitators 00:05:32.500 --> 00:05:34.500 in al-Madinah, 00:05:34.500 --> 00:05:37.500 We will surely incite you against them, 00:05:37.500 --> 00:05:42.500 “If the hypocrites, and those in whose hearts is a disease, and the alarmists in the city do not cease, We verily shall urge thee on against them, then they will be your neighbours in it but a little while.” (33:60) 00:05:42.500 --> 00:05:44.500 then they will not remain your neighbors therein except for a little, 00:05:44.500 --> 00:05:48.629 accursed; 00:05:48.629 --> 00:05:51.629 wherever they are found, 00:05:51.629 --> 00:05:55.629 they will be seized and utterly killed. 00:05:55.629 --> 00:06:01.629 Such was the Sunnah of Allah regarding those who passed away before, 00:06:01.629 --> 00:06:09.079 and you will never find in the Sunnah of Allah any change." 00:06:09.079 --> 00:06:12.079 What is required of you, my noble sister, 00:06:12.079 --> 00:06:14.079 is to remain steadfast upon the truth, 00:06:14.079 --> 00:06:17.079 to comply with the purified law of Allah, 00:06:17.079 --> 00:06:22.079 and to trust in Allah's promise of retribution against this criminal faction 00:06:22.079 --> 00:06:26.430 that strives to corrupt the daughters of the Muslims. 00:06:26.430 --> 00:06:28.430 Maryam (peace be upon her) 00:06:28.430 --> 00:06:31.430 confronted her people with a child born without a husband, 00:06:31.430 --> 00:06:36.430 while she was tranquil and fully confident in Allah’s victory for her, 00:06:36.430 --> 00:06:39.430 because this was what Allah had decreed for her 00:06:39.430 --> 00:06:44.430 so that she and her child would be a sign for the worlds. 00:06:44.430 --> 00:06:49.430 Yet the reaction of her people upon her arrival carrying the child 00:06:49.430 --> 00:06:51.430 was immense indeed; 00:06:51.430 --> 00:06:55.430 they denounced it with the severest condemnation 00:06:55.430 --> 00:06:58.430 and showered her with harsh reprimands, 00:06:58.430 --> 00:07:01.430 for they harbored the worst assumptions about her. 00:07:01.430 --> 00:07:05.620 Allah described their stance toward her, saying: 00:07:05.620 --> 00:07:09.620 "Then she brought him to her people, carrying him. 00:07:09.620 --> 00:07:15.620 “Then she brought him to her own folk, carrying him. They said: O Mary! Thou hast come with an amazing thing.” (19:27) 00:07:15.620 --> 00:07:23.620 They said, 'O sister of Harun, your father was not a man of evil, 00:07:23.620 --> 00:07:26.620 your father was not a man of evil, 00:07:26.620 --> 00:07:32.230 nor was your mother an unchaste woman.'" 00:07:32.230 --> 00:07:35.230 Ibn Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) said: 00:07:35.230 --> 00:07:37.230 "Allah Almighty relates concerning Maryam, 00:07:37.230 --> 00:07:40.230 when she was commanded to fast on that day 00:07:40.230 --> 00:07:43.230 and not to speak to any human being, 00:07:43.230 --> 00:07:47.230 that she would be spared the burden of defending herself, as her proof would be established for her. 00:07:47.230 --> 00:07:50.230 So she submitted to the command of Allah Almighty 00:07:50.230 --> 00:07:52.230 and surrendered to His decree; 00:07:52.230 --> 00:07:56.290 she took her child and brought him to her people, carrying him. 00:07:56.290 --> 00:08:00.290 When they saw her in that state, they regarded the matter as monstrous 00:08:00.290 --> 00:08:02.290 and denounced it vehemently, 00:08:02.290 --> 00:08:07.290 saying: 'O Maryam, you have certainly brought an unprecedented thing'— 00:08:07.290 --> 00:08:10.319 meaning, a dreadful deed." 00:08:10.319 --> 00:08:13.319 Ibn Jarir al-Tabari (may Allah have mercy on him) said: 00:08:13.319 --> 00:08:15.319 "When they saw Maryam 00:08:15.319 --> 00:08:18.319 and saw with her the child she had delivered, 00:08:18.319 --> 00:08:20.319 they said to her: 00:08:20.319 --> 00:08:23.319 'O Maryam, you have certainly brought an astounding thing, 00:08:23.319 --> 00:08:26.360 and committed a grave offense.'" 00:08:26.360 --> 00:08:29.360 One should not be surprised by the reaction of her people 00:08:29.360 --> 00:08:32.360 based on what they assumed she had done, 00:08:32.360 --> 00:08:35.360 for people's denunciation of an abominable act, 00:08:35.360 --> 00:08:37.360 such as the obscenity of fornication, 00:08:37.360 --> 00:08:41.389 is an indicator of societal well-being and the uprightness of its people. 00:08:41.389 --> 00:08:43.389 The greater catastrophe 00:08:43.389 --> 00:08:46.389 would have been had they not denounced her arrival, 00:08:47.389 --> 00:08:50.389 regarding it instead as personal freedom 00:08:50.389 --> 00:08:54.389 as contemporary societies advocate today. 00:08:54.389 --> 00:08:57.389 For this is indeed the true calamity: 00:08:57.389 --> 00:09:00.389 that the feelings of the people become desensitized 00:09:00.389 --> 00:09:03.389 and their senses dulled when witnessing evil, 00:09:03.389 --> 00:09:05.389 so that they do not condemn it; 00:09:05.389 --> 00:09:07.389 then the child grows up accustomed to that, 00:09:07.389 --> 00:09:10.389 until they view it as the truth 00:09:10.389 --> 00:09:13.389 and whatever opposes it as falsehood. 00:09:13.389 --> 00:09:15.679 O my dear sister, 00:09:15.679 --> 00:09:18.679 among the demands of your steadfastness upon the truth 00:09:18.679 --> 00:09:21.679 is your denunciation of evil. 00:09:21.679 --> 00:09:24.679 For it is not sufficient merely to be righteous in yourself, 00:09:24.679 --> 00:09:26.679 within your own personal affairs, 00:09:26.679 --> 00:09:30.679 while leaving the evils around you without denouncing them. 00:09:30.679 --> 00:09:34.740 Indeed, this was among the reasons why the Children of Israel were cursed. 00:09:34.740 --> 00:09:36.799 Allah Almighty said: 00:09:36.799 --> 00:09:43.799 “Those of the Children of Israel who went astray were cursed by the tongue of David, and of Jesus, son of Mary. That was because they rebelled and used to transgress.” (5:78) 00:09:43.799 --> 00:09:47.799 "...by the tongue of Dawud and 'Isa, the son of Maryam. 00:09:47.799 --> 00:09:51.799 That was because they disobeyed and used to transgress. 00:09:51.799 --> 00:09:58.220 They used not to prevent one another from wrongdoing that they did." 00:09:58.220 --> 00:10:02.220 “They restrained not one another from the wickedness they did. Verily evil was that they used to do!” (5:79) 00:10:44.700 --> 00:10:47.960 This means, my dear sister, 00:10:47.960 --> 00:10:52.960 that it is inappropriate for you to have a friend who is utterly immodest in her tabarruj, 00:10:52.960 --> 00:10:55.960 while you go out and spend time with her, 00:10:55.960 --> 00:10:58.960 yet she never hears a single word of sincere counsel from you— 00:10:58.960 --> 00:11:00.960 not even once— 00:11:00.960 --> 00:11:03.960 denouncing her wanton display; 00:11:03.960 --> 00:11:07.960 nor should one say: 'Every person is responsible only for themselves.' 00:11:07.960 --> 00:11:11.960 For when the people in the era of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) 00:11:11.960 --> 00:11:14.960 misunderstood the words of Allah Almighty: 00:11:14.960 --> 00:11:18.960 “O ye who believe! Ye have charge of your own souls. He who erreth cannot injure you if ye are rightly guided. Unto Allah ye will all return; and then He will inform you of what ye used to do.” (5:105) 00:11:18.960 --> 00:11:22.960 “O ye who believe! Ye have charge of your own souls. He who erreth cannot injure you if ye are rightly guided. Ye have charge of your own souls. He who erreth cannot injure you if ye are rightly guided. They said: O Mary! Thou hast come with an amazing thing.” (19:27) 00:12:41.049 --> 00:12:43.049 meaning: a monstrous, unprecedented thing. 00:12:43.049 --> 00:12:46.049 For the word *fariyya* is of the form *fa'il*, derived from *firyat* (fabrication), 00:12:46.049 --> 00:12:48.049 meaning by it fornication. 00:12:48.049 --> 00:12:53.049 Because a child born of fornication is like something fabricated and falsely attributed, 00:12:53.049 --> 00:12:57.049 as the fornicatress seeks to attribute it to one who is not its father. 00:12:57.049 --> 00:13:01.049 And what proves that their intent by their words 'an unprecedented thing' 00:13:01.049 --> 00:13:03.049 was fornication, 00:13:03.049 --> 00:13:04.049 is the statement of Allah Almighty: 00:13:04.049 --> 00:13:09.049 “And because of their disbelief and of their speaking against Mary a tremendous calumny;” (4:156) 00:13:09.049 --> 00:13:14.049 because that 'monstrous slander'—which was their claim that she had committed fornication 00:13:14.049 --> 00:13:17.049 and brought forth 'Isa from that fornication, 00:13:17.049 --> 00:13:20.049 far removed be both she and he from such a thing— 00:13:20.049 --> 00:13:22.049 is what was meant by their address to her. 00:13:22.049 --> 00:13:25.049 “Then she brought him to her own folk, carrying him. They said: O Mary! Thou hast come with an amazing thing.” (19:27) 00:13:25.049 --> 00:13:29.049 And what further indicates this is the statement of Allah Almighty following it: 00:13:29.049 --> 00:13:31.049 'O sister of Harun,' 00:13:31.049 --> 00:13:33.049 “O sister of Aaron! Thy father was not a wicked man nor was thy mother a harlot.” (19:28) 00:13:33.049 --> 00:13:36.049 “O sister of Aaron!
