In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Mawaddah Association presents: Happened in Ramadan. By Abd al-Rahman Ra'fat al-Basha. The slain Abu Jahl In this noble month, The greatest black banner of the pre-Islamic era of ignorance was finally folded away. It was the largest idol among the idols of polytheism in the Arabian Peninsula. Thus, on the seventeenth of Ramadan, The second year of the Hijrah. Abu Jahl met his death at the hands of the Muslims at Badr. And the sands of the well swallowed them up into its deep abyss. He was the greatest tyrant the Arabian Peninsula had ever known. Abu Jahl had an encounter that will never be forgotten in the history of the conflict between truth and falsehood. Amr ibn Hisham al-Makhzumi al-Qurashi was a prominent chieftain among the Arabs during the pre-Islamic era (Jahiliyyah), and one of the renowned, formidable champions of Quraysh. as well as one of their famously shrewd tacticians. And she used to address him by the kunya of Abu al-Hakam. Consequently, the Muslims gave him the title Abu Jahl. The Quraysh honored Abu Jahl with leadership even though he was a youth who had not yet reached the age of manhood. And I brought him into the Dar al-Nadwa along with the elders. He should look into her affairs and make decisions regarding her matters. It was befitting of Abu Jahl’s intellect and wisdom. That they may lead him toward belief in the call of Islam. And submitting to the word of truth. And achieving the mastery of this world and the honor of the hereafter. Yet, it is nothing but obstinacy. It is this very obstinacy that cast Iblis out of Paradise. And cast Abu Jahl into the Fire. It was the obstinacy that caused Abu Jahl to listen on one occasion. He and al-Akhnas al-Thaqafi went to the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. He was reciting a portion of the clear verses of Allah. Al-Akhnas then said to Abu Jahl What is your opinion, O Abu al-Hakam, regarding what you have heard from Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him? He then asked, "What did you hear?" We and the sons of ‘Abd Manaf disputed over the matter of honor. They provided food, and so we were fed. They charged, and we charged in return. And they gave, so we gave. Until we were aligned knee-to-knee. And we were like the early generations. They said, "Among us is a Prophet to whom revelation comes down from the heavens." So when will we truly grasp that? By Allah, we shall never believe in him, nor shall we ever deem him truthful. In his obstinacy, Abu Jahl resorted to... And he employed his power and influence to harm the Muslims. Sometimes with his hand, and other times with his tongue. And a third [category] through his cunning and his intellect. Thus, Allah, glory be to Him, turned his plot back against him. And He grants him a favorable outcome in all his affairs. The Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was once harmed. This was a cause for the conversion to Islam of the uncle of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. Hamzah ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib Through this, Allah strengthened Islam. The Muslims rejoiced at it. And they called Hamzah, may Allah be pleased with him, the Lion of Allah. He was like a lion against the polytheists. He and his people went to great lengths in their persecution of the Muslims. And the persecution of the vulnerable. Then He empowered the foolish among them over them. And they incited the foolish against them. That was the reason for the migration. The migration was the catalyst for the dismantling of the state of polytheism. And to elevate the word of Allah upon the earth. One day, Abu Jahl signaled to his people to gather for a council. regarding the killing of the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. In order to be rid of his call. So the Quraysh acted upon his counsel. On the night the crime was to be carried out, Abu Jahl stood waiting. Along with those who surrounded the residence of the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, then went forth. From the house that is encompassed [by blessings]. Within the hearing of the people and right before their eyes. And in his hand was a handful of dust. Cast it upon the head of Abu Jahl and those who were with Abu Jahl. He was reciting the words of Allah, the Almighty and Majestic: Abu Jahl lost his composure and took leave of his senses. When the victim escaped from his clutches. He went around the houses of Makkah, searching for the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. without any benefit The first house he intended to visit was the house of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him. Asma' bint Abi Bakr, may Allah be pleased with her, went out to meet him. Abu Jahl then asked her, "Where is your father?" The girl replied, "I do not know." At that moment, he raised his sinful hand. And he struck Asma’ across the cheek with a harsh blow. Her earring fell off due to the intensity of it. And while Abu Jahl and his followers were... They are searching for Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. Everywhere, they are in a state of distress and agitation. Yathrib would come out in full force, with both its elders and its youth. And its young men, its youths, and its young women. In order to welcome its magnificent guest. And His noble Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. with joy and celebratory songs. And while Abu Jahl was consumed by his own rage. out of envy and malice in Makkah The noble Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was He established the foundations of the Islamic state in Yathrib. Not much time had passed since the migration of the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. Except for nineteen months. until it became within the reach of the vulnerable Muhajirun To threaten the trade routes of the Quraysh with the Levant. And that they might disturb the resting places of the chieftains of Makkah. And that they should stand against Abu Jahl and his followers. And that they should inflict a defeat upon them. It changed the course of history. The Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was well acquainted with That Abu Sufyan is arriving from the Levant. At the head of a major merchant caravan. In it, there are one thousand camels. Laden with the most precious treasures of the Levant. Which the Quraysh love and prefer. The Muslims found this to be a golden opportunity. To seek restitution for the wealth of the Muslim emigrants. The disbelievers of Quraysh in Makkah were the ones who confiscated them. And in order to attain that which corresponds to the wealth that They left them behind at the time of the migration. And to strike a crushing blow against the camp of polytheism in Makkah. Abu Sufyan realized that Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, And his Companions had gone out to meet him. He then sent a warner to Makkah. He mobilizes them for battle. And he calls upon them to rescue the caravan. And protecting it from falling into the hands of the Muslims. Then Abu Jahl stood up. Driven by his deep-seated hatred for Muhammad and the Companions of Muhammad, may Allah be pleased with them. He was filled with hatred for Islam and the Muslims. He began to sharpen the swords. And it stirs the souls. And he kindles the fires within the hearts. And he incites the people against Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and the Companions of Muhammad. Then, he prepared a great army. All the tribes of Quraysh participated in it. And to him [turned] all the leaders of Makkah. Abu Jahl slaughtered [camels] for the army on the day he departed from Makkah. Ten she-camels. Then, the leaders of Quraysh followed in his footsteps. regarding the feeding of the army Whose number exceeded one thousand three hundred horsemen. While the army was pressing forward in its march. Heading towards Badr. A messenger came to him on behalf of Abu Sufyan. He informs him of the caravan’s safety. From the direction he came, and he says to his commanders You have only set out to intercept your caravan. And your men and your wealth. And Allah has saved her, so return. Yet, the obstinacy of Abu Jahl and his deep-seated grudges. and his arrogance and pride. He refused to return, for he had already taken it. Pride in sin. I swear by Allah and His Might. On the condition that he does not return to Makkah. Until he returned to Badr and remained there for three days. He would then slaughter camels upon it. And he drinks intoxicants in their presence. And the singing girls would play musical instruments for him by the water. And through this, the Arabs speak of him and his people. They shall hold them in awe for all eternity. Despite the fractures that had afflicted the Meccan army, Despite the betrayal of al-Akhnas Al-Thaqafi, on his authority, and his return. with three hundred men from his tribe, the Banu Zuhrah. Abu Jahl continued in his obstinacy. Abu Jahl advanced with the army of polytheism. Heading toward the north. He trails the hems of his vanity and dons the garments of arrogance. And it only increased him in arrogance. What he knew of Muhammad, peace be upon him, and his Companions. Their number does not exceed three hundred men. And do not let their number exceed seventy camels and two horses. However, 'Umayr ibn Wahb One of the master strategists of war in Makkah. He said to his people after he had caught sight of the army of Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. O my people. By Allah, I have indeed seen the burdens of life carrying with them great calamities. I saw a group of people who possessed no means of defense. except for their swords. And there is no refuge except in their bodies. To the point that a man among them is killed. Until a man from among you is killed. So consider carefully what you are doing. The impact of 'Umayr's words upon the people. Then, a new opposition arose in the face of Abu Jahl. 'Utbah ibn Rabi'ah led them. Sayyid ibn 'Abd Shams And he said, among the things he said: O assembly of Quraysh! If they attain it, then that is what you intended. And if any of them are saved He found you having made peace with him. At that moment, Abu Jahl was consumed with rage. And he accused Sayyid Ibn 'Abd Shams of cowardice. He drew his sword from its scabbard. He struck the flank of his horse with it. The army hastened to enter the battle. Fearing the rise of a new opposition, the army of Makkah found itself face to face with Muhammad and his Companions. The blood of the Age of Ignorance boiled in their veins, the fire of hatred ignited within their chests, and their souls, fueled by malice, grew reckless, casting themselves into the inferno of battle. The two hosts met upon the sands of Badr, and the polytheists charged at the Muslims as one man. The intensity of the back-and-forth struggle flared between the two sides, and the noble Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, feared for his Companions, so he turned to his Lord in supplication, raising his voice in appeal as he said: "O Allah, I beseech You for Your covenant and Your promise." The Messenger, may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, then cast himself into the heat of the battle. No sooner did his Companions see him advancing to the front lines than their souls ignited with fervor, and they surged behind him like a torrent, while he recited: “The hosts will all be routed and will turn and flee.” (54:45) "Rather, the Hour is their appointed time, and the Hour is more grievous and more bitter." Panic then struck the hearts of the polytheists, and their ranks began to flee. The Muslims pursued them relentlessly, killing some and taking others captive. Yet Abu Jahl turned into a raging bull, standing firm in the battle and crying out: "By Al-Lat and Al-'Uzza, we shall not retreat until we disperse Muhammad and his Companions and drive them into the mountains." But Al-Lat and Al-'Uzza did not grant victory to Abu Jahl, for he fell prostrate, struck by the swords of the Muslims, his head pierced by the spears of the oppressed who had once fled from his tyranny and harm. Allah fulfilled His promise and granted victory to His servant, the polytheists turned their backs in retreat, and it was said: "Away with the wrongdoing people."
