A summary of the concepts held by the Ahl al-Sunnah.
Collective upbringing.
Although individual upbringing has its own importance and role in preparing distinguished individuals,
it is never sufficient on its own.
Rather, collective upbringing—or the upbringing of the individual within a group—is essential.
This is because the human soul, as we have explained regarding the nature of the one being nurtured,
possesses two innate inclinations:
an individual inclination and a collective one.
Thus, the human is an individual within a collective.
Consequently, an individual will not develop in a balanced manner
unless we account for those aspects of their character that do not mature or function
except within a group containing other individuals.
The school and its student activities are a form of collective upbringing.
The same applies to Qur'an memorization circles in mosques.
The educational trips and camps that accompany these are also a form of collective upbringing.
In these settings, the recipient is trained in how to coexist properly with others,
how to interact with them positively,
how to form shared goals,
and how to achieve the kind of teamwork
that yields significant results in areas that cannot be achieved through individual effort.
