From the aesthetic beauties of the Prophetic biography (Seerah). The lesser form of guarding oneself [against the Fire]. A piece of a date, split in two, with its edge crushed—the humble effort of one who has little. Though it may seem detached from its essence and place, it satisfies no soul and quenches no thirst. Yet, it may be a cause for salvation from the Fire. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "Guard yourselves against the Fire, even if with half a date." And in the narration of the Musnad: "O 'A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, shield yourself from the Fire, even if with half a date." For it satisfies the hungry just as it would satisfy the full. Do not let its insignificance in your eyes prevent you from bestowing it. Placing it as a morsel in the mouth of a hungry or needy person. For there are those among people who rejoice at it and are gladdened by such kindness and generosity. In times of famine, it yields its effect and its reach is blessed. Do not belittle any act of kindness. In this lies a training in giving, even if it be but a meager amount. And that Allah blesses a small deed due to the sincerity of the one who performs it. Or due to the necessity of the time and the person in need. And the obligation to guard against the Fire and to constantly reflect upon it. And to ward it off, even with half a date. Even though you may be able to provide crates of dates. But Islam is magnificent in its commands and its legislation. It cuts off the excuse of every person who makes excuses or procrastinates. And Allah is the Grantor of success.
