A hadith and commentary. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "Indeed, some of what the spring brings forth kills or nearly kills by overeating." It is agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. Commentary: This profound statement has become a proverbial expression. Abu Hilal al-'Askari stated in Jamharat al-Amthal: This is a parable set forth by the Prophet, peace be upon him, for one who is granted a portion of worldly wealth, yet becomes so preoccupied with it, seeking more and clinging to it, that he neglects the rectification of his religion. Consequently, this becomes the cause of his ruin, just as livestock, if they do not graze in moderation, suffer from bloated stomachs and die, or come close to it. And al-habt (the condition mentioned in the hadith) is the swelling of the stomach.
