A new challenge: Who am I?
I am one of the senior Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
I am his son-in-law and his vizier.
I embraced Islam in the sixth year of the Prophetic mission.
I witnessed all the battles alongside the Prophet, peace be upon him.
I was his advisor in many matters.
The Qur'an was revealed in accordance with my opinion on more than one occasion.
I remained in the company of the Prophet, peace be upon him, throughout his life and after his passing.
My grave is next to his grave, peace be upon him.
When the Prophet, peace be upon him, passed away,
The Ansar gathered at the Saqifah of Banu Sa'idah
To choose a caliph.
I said, "O Abu Bakr,
Let us go to our brothers among the Ansar."
So we set out toward them,
And we came to them while they were at the Saqifah of Banu Sa'idah.
Their speaker stood up,
Praised Allah as He deserves,
And then said, "To proceed:
We are the Ansar and the battalion of faith,
And you, O company of the Muhajirun, are a group from among us.
So let there be an amir from us."
When he fell silent,
I intended to speak words that I had prepared and liked.
But Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, said to me,
"Slow down."
I knew his seriousness,
And I disliked to anger him,
For he was better than me, more insightful, and more dignified.
Then he spoke,
And by Allah, he did not leave out a single word I had liked
Without saying it, and even saying it better than I could have.
Until he finished,
And then said, "To proceed:
Whatever good you have mentioned, it is indeed within you, O company of the Ansar,
And you are worthy of it and even more.
But the Arabs will not recognize this authority
Except for this clan of Quraysh,
For they are the most central of the Arabs in lineage and home.
I have chosen for you one of these two men,
So pledge allegiance to whichever of them you wish."
He then took my hand and the hand of Abu 'Ubaydah Ibn al-Jarrah, may Allah be pleased with him.
I disliked nothing of what he said except for that part.
Then a man from the Ansar stood up and said,
"Let there be an amir from us and an amir from you, O company of the Muhajirun."
The clamor increased and voices were raised,
Until I feared there would be a schism.
So I stood up and said,
"Extend your hand, O Abu Bakr."
He extended his hand, and I pledged allegiance to him.
Then the Muhajirun stood and pledged allegiance to him,
And then the Ansar, may Allah be pleased with them, pledged allegiance to him.
Thus, Allah spared the believers from discord after the passing of the Messenger, peace be upon him.
The unity of the Muslims was preserved, and all praise is due to Allah.
