Joy according to the standards of the Age of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah).
Joy, by the standards of the Jahiliyyah, carries the following characteristics:
First, the source of their joy and how they express it:
It is either an indulgence in permissible things to the point of forgetting the Hereafter,
Or it is joy in disobedience to Allah, expressed through arrogance and insolence.
Second, the joy of these deluded people in the false sciences, philosophies, and flimsy cultures they possess,
Which Satan has adorned and made attractive in their minds, leading them to argue against the truth with them.
Allah the Almighty says: "When their messengers came to them with clear proofs, they rejoiced in what they had of knowledge."
And they were encompassed by that which they used to mock.
Third, their joy in showing off and boasting.
Allah the Almighty says: "Do not think that those who rejoice in what they have perpetrated and love to be praised for what they have not done..."
“Think not that those who exult in what they have given, and love to be praised for what they have not done - Think not, they are in safety from the doom. A painful doom is theirs.” (3:188)
Fourth, their joy in the calamities that befall the Muslims.
Allah the Almighty says: "If a good thing befalls you, it distresses them."
“If good befalleth thee (O Muhammad) it afflicteth them, and if calamity befalleth thee, they say: We took precaution, and they turn away well pleased.” (9:50)
Fifth, joy in factionalism based on falsehood.
Allah the Almighty says: "Every faction rejoicing in what they have."
Sixth, their joy in mocking and harming the believers.
Allah the Almighty says: "Indeed, those who committed crimes used to laugh at those who believed."
“And wink one to another when they passed them;” (83:30)
“And when they returned to their own folk, they returned jesting;” (83:31)
