A verse and its Tafsir
Allah the Exalted says:
“And eat not up your property among yourselves in vanity, nor seek by it to gain the hearing of the judges that ye may knowingly devour a portion of the property of others wrongfully.” (2:188)
Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said:
It refers to a man who owes a debt for which there is no clear evidence against him,
so he denies the debt and takes the matter to the judges,
even though he knows that the right belongs to the other party,
and he knows that he is sinful and consuming what is unlawful.
Mujahid, al-Hasan,
Qatadah, 'Ikrimah, and al-Suddi said:
The meaning is: do not litigate while you are the wrongdoer.
