WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:03.399 In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. 00:00:03.399 --> 00:00:06.889 Treasures of the Seerah. 00:00:06.889 --> 00:00:12.779 The beginning of the battle. 00:00:12.779 --> 00:00:18.829 The Muslims lined up, and the idolaters lined up— 00:00:18.829 --> 00:00:21.629 three hundred and a dozen or so men 00:00:21.629 --> 00:00:24.629 against one thousand idolaters. 00:00:24.629 --> 00:00:27.699 Then three men from the people of Mecca stepped forward: 00:00:27.699 --> 00:00:30.699 'Utbah and Shaybah, the sons of Rabi'ah, 00:00:30.699 --> 00:00:32.700 and Al-Walid ibn 'Utbah. 00:00:32.700 --> 00:00:35.500 They separated from the ranks of the idolaters 00:00:35.500 --> 00:00:37.500 and requested a duel, 00:00:37.500 --> 00:00:39.500 calling out, "Who will duel us?" 00:00:39.500 --> 00:00:43.500 This was a form of warming up for combat 00:00:43.500 --> 00:00:45.500 that the Arabs used to practice. 00:00:45.500 --> 00:00:49.500 So three young men from the Ansar stepped forward to face them: 00:00:49.500 --> 00:00:52.500 'Awf and Mu'awwidh, the sons of Al-Harith, 00:00:52.500 --> 00:00:54.500 and 'Abdullah ibn Rawahah. 00:00:54.500 --> 00:00:58.500 When they met, the idolaters asked the Muslims, 00:00:58.500 --> 00:01:00.500 "Who are you?" 00:01:00.500 --> 00:01:02.500 They replied, "A group from the Ansar." 00:01:02.500 --> 00:01:04.500 The idolaters said to them, 00:01:04.500 --> 00:01:06.500 "Noble equals! 00:01:06.500 --> 00:01:08.500 But we have no need of you; 00:01:08.500 --> 00:01:11.620 we only want the sons of our uncles." 00:01:11.620 --> 00:01:13.620 Then their herald called out, 00:01:13.620 --> 00:01:18.659 "O Muhammad, send out against us our equals from our own people!" 00:01:18.659 --> 00:01:22.659 Whereupon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, 00:01:22.659 --> 00:01:25.659 "Stand up, O 'Ubaydah ibn al-Harith"— 00:01:25.659 --> 00:01:28.659 who was a cousin of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), 00:01:28.659 --> 00:01:31.659 meeting him in lineage at 'Abd Manaf, 00:01:31.659 --> 00:01:34.659 as he was from the descendants of Al-Muttalib ibn 'Abd Manaf, 00:01:34.659 --> 00:01:38.659 while the Prophet was from the descendants of Hashim ibn 'Abd Manaf— 00:01:38.659 --> 00:01:41.659 and he said, "Stand up, O Hamzah! 00:01:41.659 --> 00:01:43.659 And stand up, O 'Ali!" 00:01:43.659 --> 00:01:47.659 Thus he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) chose his own relatives. 00:01:47.659 --> 00:01:50.750 When they stood up and drew near to them, 00:01:50.750 --> 00:01:53.750 the idolaters said, "Noble equals!" 00:01:53.750 --> 00:01:57.750 So 'Ubaydah ibn al-Harith dueled 'Utbah ibn Rabi'ah, 00:01:57.750 --> 00:02:00.750 Hamzah dueled Shaybah, 00:02:00.750 --> 00:02:03.750 and 'Ali dueled Al-Walid ibn 'Utbah. 00:02:03.750 --> 00:02:06.750 As for Hamzah, he killed his opponent; 00:02:06.750 --> 00:02:09.750 as for 'Ali, he killed his opponent; 00:02:09.750 --> 00:02:14.750 but as for 'Ubaydah, he and his adversary exchanged two blows, 00:02:14.750 --> 00:02:17.750 each striking the other a blow. 00:02:17.750 --> 00:02:20.750 Then 'Ali and Hamzah charged at 'Utbah 00:02:20.750 --> 00:02:25.750 and killed him, and they carried 'Ubaydah ibn al-Harith away while he was wounded, 00:02:25.750 --> 00:02:27.750 his leg having been severed. 00:02:27.750 --> 00:02:32.819 He passed away three days later (may Allah be pleased with him). 00:02:32.819 --> 00:02:34.819 Thus this duel ended. 00:02:34.819 --> 00:02:37.819 Quraysh became enraged at that, 00:02:37.819 --> 00:02:41.819 and they charged at the Muslims as one man. 00:02:41.819 --> 00:02:46.819 The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood supplicating his Lord, Exalted is He, 00:02:46.819 --> 00:02:48.819 saying: 00:02:48.819 --> 00:02:52.819 "O Allah, if this band of Muslims is destroyed today, You will not be worshipped! 00:02:53.819 --> 00:02:57.819 O Allah, if You will, You will never be worshipped after this day!" 00:02:57.819 --> 00:02:59.819 He went to great lengths in his supplication, 00:02:59.819 --> 00:03:04.819 raising his hands so high that his cloak fell from his shoulders. 00:03:04.819 --> 00:03:08.819 Abu Bakr al-Siddiq placed it back upon him and said, 00:03:08.819 --> 00:03:10.819 "Sufficient for you, O Messenger of Allah! 00:03:10.819 --> 00:03:13.909 You have implored your Lord persistently." 00:03:13.909 --> 00:03:17.909 Thereupon, Allah (blessed and exalted is He) revealed to the angels: 00:03:17.909 --> 00:03:21.909 “When thy Lord inspired the angels, (saying): I am with you. So make those who believe stand firm. I will throw fear into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Then smite the necks and smite of them each finger.” (8:12) 00:03:21.909 --> 00:03:24.909 ﴿I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieved﴾, 00:03:24.909 --> 00:03:28.909 and Allah (blessed and exalted is He) revealed to His Messenger: 00:03:28.909 --> 00:03:33.909 “When ye sought help of your Lord and He answered you (saying): I will help you with a thousand of the angels, rank on rank.” (8:9) 00:03:33.909 --> 00:03:37.909 meaning that they were a reinforcement following one after another to assist you. 00:03:37.909 --> 00:03:40.909 Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) dozed off 00:03:40.909 --> 00:03:42.909 for a brief moment, 00:03:42.909 --> 00:03:44.909 then he said, 00:03:44.909 --> 00:03:46.909 "Rejoice, O Abu Bakr! 00:03:46.909 --> 00:03:50.909 Here is Jibril, with dust upon his front teeth." 00:03:50.909 --> 00:03:53.979 And regarding them, His saying (Exalted is He) was revealed: 00:03:53.979 --> 00:03:59.979 “Allah had already given you the victory at Badr, when ye were contemptible. Yes, if you remain steadfast..."﴾ 00:04:10.979 --> 00:04:22.980 “When thou didst say unto the believers: Is it not sufficient for you that your Lord should support you with three thousand angels sent down (to your help)?” (3:124) 00:04:22.980 --> 00:04:25.980 “Nay, but if ye persevere, and keep from evil, and (the enemy) attack you suddenly, your Lord will help you with five thousand angels sweeping on.” (3:125) 00:04:25.980 --> 00:04:29.980 “Nay, but if ye persevere, and keep from evil, and (the enemy) attack you suddenly, your Lord will help you with five thousand angels sweeping on.” (3:125) 00:04:29.980 --> 00:04:33.980 ﴿...your Lord will reinforce you with five thousand angels having marks of distinction.﴾ 00:04:33.980 --> 00:04:39.980 “Nay, but if ye persevere, and keep from evil, and (the enemy) attack you suddenly, your Lord will help you with five thousand angels sweeping on.” (3:125) 00:04:40.980 --> 00:04:44.980 ﴿And Allah made it not except as good tidings for you and to reassure your hearts thereby.﴾ 00:04:44.980 --> 00:04:48.980 ﴿And to reassure your hearts thereby.﴾ 00:04:48.980 --> 00:04:55.980 “Allah ordained this only as a message of good cheer for you, and that thereby your hearts might be at rest - Victory cometh only from Allah, the Mighty, the Wise -” (3:126) 00:04:55.980 --> 00:05:00.069 Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came out 00:05:00.069 --> 00:05:01.069 from the doorway of the shelter, 00:05:01.069 --> 00:05:04.069 leaping in his armor and saying: 00:05:04.069 --> 00:05:08.069 “The hosts will all be routed and will turn and flee.” (54:45) 00:05:08.069 --> 00:05:11.069 ﴿The assembly will be defeated, and they will turn their backs.﴾ 00:05:11.069 --> 00:05:14.069 Then he took a handful of pebbles, 00:05:14.069 --> 00:05:16.069 faced Quraysh with it, and said, "May these faces be disfigured!" 00:05:16.069 --> 00:05:19.069 And he (peace be upon him) threw them at them, 00:05:19.069 --> 00:05:22.069 and there was not a single man among them but that some of what the Messenger of Allah threw struck him. 00:05:22.069 --> 00:05:26.069 What the Messenger (peace be upon him) threw struck him, 00:05:26.069 --> 00:05:30.069 and regarding this is the saying of Allah (blessed and exalted is He): 00:05:30.069 --> 00:05:32.069 “Ye (Muslims) slew them not, but Allah slew them. And thou (Muhammad) threwest not when thou didst throw, but Allah threw, that He might test the believers by a fair test from Him. Lo! Allah is Hearer, Knower.” (8:17) 00:05:32.069 --> 00:05:35.100 ﴿And you threw not when you threw, but it was Allah who threw.﴾ 00:05:35.100 --> 00:05:37.100 And the Muslims charged fiercely against the disbelievers, 00:05:37.100 --> 00:05:39.100 and victory was achieved. 00:05:39.100 --> 00:05:42.810 Treasures of the Seerah. 00:05:42.810 --> 00:05:49.170 Moments filled with lessons. 00:05:49.170 --> 00:05:53.740 'Umayr ibn al-Humam (may Allah be pleased with him) 00:05:53.740 --> 00:05:57.740 heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: 00:05:57.740 --> 00:06:00.740 "By the One in Whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad, 00:06:00.740 --> 00:06:03.740 no man fights them today 00:06:03.740 --> 00:06:07.740 and is killed enduring patiently, seeking reward, advancing and not retreating, 00:06:07.740 --> 00:06:10.740 except that Allah will admit him into Paradise." 00:06:10.740 --> 00:06:12.740 And he was saying, 00:06:12.740 --> 00:06:16.740 "Stand up to a Paradise whose width is as vast as the heavens and the earth!" 00:06:16.740 --> 00:06:19.860 'Umayr ibn al-Humam stood up and said, 00:06:19.860 --> 00:06:22.860 "O Messenger of Allah! Fine, fine!" 00:06:22.860 --> 00:06:25.860 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) asked, 00:06:25.860 --> 00:06:29.860 "What prompts you to say, 'Fine, fine'?" 00:06:29.860 --> 00:06:33.860 He replied, "Nothing, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah, 00:06:33.860 --> 00:06:36.860 except my hope that I may be among its people." 00:06:36.860 --> 00:06:39.860 The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, 00:06:39.860 --> 00:06:42.860 giving him glad tidings, "Indeed, you are among its people." 00:06:42.860 --> 00:06:46.860 So he brought out some dates and began eating from them, 00:06:46.860 --> 00:06:49.860 then he said, "If I were to live 00:06:49.860 --> 00:06:52.860 long enough to eat these dates of mine, 00:06:52.860 --> 00:06:55.860 that would indeed be a long life!" 00:06:55.860 --> 00:06:58.860 So he threw away the dates, stepped forward, and fought 00:06:58.860 --> 00:07:01.860 until he was killed (may Allah be pleased with him). 00:07:01.860 --> 00:07:05.819 Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) said: 00:07:05.819 --> 00:07:08.819 "While a man from among the Muslims 00:07:08.819 --> 00:07:11.819 was pursuing a man from among the idolaters 00:07:11.819 --> 00:07:14.819 ahead of him, he suddenly heard the crack of a whip 00:07:14.819 --> 00:07:17.819 above him and the voice of a rider saying, 00:07:17.819 --> 00:07:20.819 'Advance, Haizum!' He looked at the idolater 00:07:20.819 --> 00:07:23.819 ahead of him and saw him fallen slain. So the Ansari came 00:07:23.819 --> 00:07:26.819 and informed the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), 00:07:26.819 --> 00:07:29.819 and he said, 'You have spoken the truth; 00:07:29.819 --> 00:07:32.819 that was from the reinforcements of the third heaven.'" 00:07:32.819 --> 00:07:37.170 And Abu Dawud al-Mazini 00:07:37.170 --> 00:07:39.170 (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 00:07:39.170 --> 00:07:42.170 "I was pursuing a man from among the idolaters 00:07:42.170 --> 00:07:45.170 to strike him, when his head fell off 00:07:45.170 --> 00:07:48.170 before my sword could even reach him, 00:07:48.170 --> 00:07:51.620 so I knew that someone else had killed him." 00:07:51.620 --> 00:07:54.620 And a man from the Ansar came 00:07:54.620 --> 00:07:57.620 bringing Al-'Abbas ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib as a captive. 00:07:57.620 --> 00:08:00.620 Al-'Abbas had marched out with the idolaters 00:08:00.620 --> 00:08:03.620 reluctantly, so he was captured. 00:08:03.620 --> 00:08:06.620 The Ansari said, "O Messenger of Allah, I captured Al-'Abbas!" 00:08:06.620 --> 00:08:09.620 Al-'Abbas said, "No, by Allah, this man did not capture me! 00:08:09.620 --> 00:08:12.620 I was captured by a bald man 00:08:12.620 --> 00:08:15.620 with the handsomest face, 00:08:15.620 --> 00:08:18.620 riding a piebald horse, 00:08:18.620 --> 00:08:21.620 and I do not see him among these people." 00:08:21.620 --> 00:08:24.620 The Ansari said, "I captured him, O Messenger of Allah!" 00:08:24.620 --> 00:08:27.620 The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, 00:08:27.620 --> 00:08:30.620 "Be quiet, for Allah supported you 00:08:30.620 --> 00:08:33.870 with a noble angel." 00:08:34.870 --> 00:08:37.870 'Abdur-Rahman ibn 'Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: 00:08:37.870 --> 00:08:40.870 "I was in the rank on the day of Badr when I turned around, 00:08:40.870 --> 00:08:43.870 and there on my right and on my left 00:08:43.870 --> 00:08:46.870 were two very young boys. 00:08:46.870 --> 00:08:49.870 One of them said to me, 'O uncle, 00:08:49.870 --> 00:08:52.870 show us Abu Jahl!' 00:08:52.870 --> 00:08:55.870 I said, 'What will you two do with him?' 00:08:55.870 --> 00:08:58.870 He said, 'We were informed that he reviles the Messenger of Allah 00:08:58.870 --> 00:09:01.870 (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). 00:09:01.870 --> 00:09:04.870 If I see him, I will point him out to you.' 00:09:04.870 --> 00:09:07.870 One of them said, 'By the One in Whose Hand 00:09:07.870 --> 00:09:10.870 is my soul, if I see him, my person shall not part 00:09:10.870 --> 00:09:13.870 from his person until whichever of us is decreed to die first dies!' I marvelled 00:09:13.870 --> 00:09:16.870 at that. It was not long before I saw 00:09:16.870 --> 00:09:19.870 Abu Jahl moving about among the people, 00:09:19.870 --> 00:09:22.870 so I said, 'Do you see that man? 00:09:22.870 --> 00:09:25.870 He is your target whom you were asking about.' 00:09:25.870 --> 00:09:28.870 They struck him until they killed him, 00:09:29.870 --> 00:09:32.870 then they departed to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). 00:09:32.870 --> 00:09:35.870 He asked, 'Which of you 00:09:35.870 --> 00:09:38.870 killed him?' Each one of them 00:09:38.870 --> 00:09:41.870 said, 'I killed him.' 00:09:41.870 --> 00:09:44.870 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, 00:09:44.870 --> 00:09:47.870 'Have you wiped your swords?' 00:09:47.870 --> 00:09:50.870 They said, 'No.' So the Messenger 00:09:50.870 --> 00:09:53.870 (peace be upon him) looked at both swords 00:09:53.870 --> 00:09:56.870 and said, 'Both of you killed him.'" 00:09:56.870 --> 00:09:59.870 "Both of you killed him." 00:09:59.870 --> 00:10:02.870 And when Abu Jahl fell, 00:10:02.870 --> 00:10:05.870 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) came to him 00:10:05.870 --> 00:10:08.870 and said to him, "Allah has disgraced you, 00:10:08.870 --> 00:10:11.870 O enemy of Allah!" 00:10:11.870 --> 00:10:14.940 Abu Jahl said, "Is there any man higher than one whom you have killed?"— 00:10:14.940 --> 00:10:17.940 despite his disbelief and obstinacy, 00:10:17.940 --> 00:10:21.000 he was nevertheless among the brave men of the Arabs. 00:10:21.000 --> 00:10:24.000 Then Abu Jahl said, 00:10:24.000 --> 00:10:27.000 "Tell me, who has won the day?" 00:10:27.000 --> 00:10:30.000 He replied, "Allah and His Messenger." 00:10:30.000 --> 00:10:33.000 Then 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud stood up 00:10:33.000 --> 00:10:36.000 and placed his foot upon the neck of Abu Jahl. 00:10:36.000 --> 00:10:39.000 Abu Jahl said, 00:10:39.000 --> 00:10:42.000 "You have climbed a steep ascent, O little shepherd of sheep!" 00:10:42.000 --> 00:10:45.000 Ibn Mas'ud said, 00:10:45.000 --> 00:10:48.000 "So I severed his head at that point, 00:10:48.000 --> 00:10:51.000 then I took it to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). 00:10:52.000 --> 00:10:55.000 When the Prophet (peace be upon him) saw it, 00:10:55.000 --> 00:10:58.000 he said, 'This is the Pharaoh 00:10:58.000 --> 00:11:01.450 of this Ummah.'" 00:11:01.450 --> 00:11:04.450 'Abdur-Rahman ibn 'Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) 00:11:04.450 --> 00:11:07.450 was a friend of Umayyah ibn Khalaf in Mecca. 00:11:07.450 --> 00:11:10.450 On the day of Badr, 00:11:10.450 --> 00:11:13.450 'Abdur-Rahman ibn 'Awf passed by Umayyah ibn Khalaf 00:11:13.450 --> 00:11:16.450 while he was standing with his son, holding his hand, 00:11:16.450 --> 00:11:19.450 while 'Abdur-Rahman ibn 'Awf was carrying coats of armor 00:11:19.450 --> 00:11:22.450 that he had looted as spoils. 00:11:22.450 --> 00:11:25.450 When Umayyah saw him, he said, 00:11:25.450 --> 00:11:28.450 "Would you be interested in me? I am better than these coats of mail 00:11:28.450 --> 00:11:31.580 that you have with you." 00:11:31.580 --> 00:11:34.580 He replied, "I have never seen a day like today!" 00:11:34.580 --> 00:11:37.580 "Do you have no need for milk?" 00:11:37.580 --> 00:11:40.580 So 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf cast away the coats of mail 00:11:40.580 --> 00:11:43.580 and took them both by the hand, walking with them. 00:11:43.580 --> 00:11:46.580 Umayyah then said to 'Abd al-Rahman, 00:11:46.580 --> 00:11:49.580 "Who was the man among you marked with an ostrich feather on his chest?" 00:11:49.580 --> 00:11:52.580 I replied, "That was Hamzah ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib." 00:11:52.580 --> 00:11:55.580 He said, "He is the one who wrought 00:11:55.580 --> 00:11:58.580 all that havoc upon us!" 00:11:58.580 --> 00:12:01.740 'Abd al-Rahman said, 00:12:01.740 --> 00:12:04.740 "By Allah, while I was leading them both, 00:12:04.740 --> 00:12:07.740 Bilal suddenly saw him with me— 00:12:07.740 --> 00:12:10.740 and Umayyah was the very one who used to torture Bilal in Makkah. 00:12:10.740 --> 00:12:13.740 Bilal exclaimed, 'The chief of disbelief! 00:12:13.740 --> 00:12:16.740 Umayyah ibn Khalaf! May I not survive if he survives!' 00:12:16.740 --> 00:12:19.740 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf said, 00:12:19.740 --> 00:12:22.740 'O Bilal, they are my captives!' 00:12:22.740 --> 00:12:25.740 He repeated, 'May I not survive if he survives!' 00:12:25.740 --> 00:12:28.740 Then he cried out at the top of his voice, 00:12:28.740 --> 00:12:31.740 'O Ansar of Allah!
