00:13:13.750 --> 00:13:18.730 I am a Companion 00:13:18.730 --> 00:13:20.730 from the tribe of Muzaynah. 00:13:20.730 --> 00:13:22.730 I was renowned for courage, 00:13:22.730 --> 00:13:24.730 valor, determination, 00:13:24.730 --> 00:13:26.919 and sound judgment. 00:13:26.919 --> 00:13:28.919 I witnessed the Battle of the Trench (al-Ahzab) 00:13:28.919 --> 00:13:30.919 and subsequent events alongside the Prophet 00:13:30.919 --> 00:13:32.919 (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). 00:13:32.919 --> 00:13:34.919 I had enduring, 00:13:34.919 --> 00:13:36.919 monumental stands in Islam. 00:13:36.919 --> 00:13:39.399 One day, I said 00:13:39.399 --> 00:13:41.399 to my people: "By Allah, 00:13:41.399 --> 00:13:43.399 we have known nothing of Muhammad 00:13:43.399 --> 00:13:45.399 except good, 00:13:45.399 --> 00:13:47.399 nor have we heard from his call 00:13:47.399 --> 00:13:49.399 anything but mercy, benevolence, 00:13:49.399 --> 00:13:51.399 and justice. 00:13:51.399 --> 00:13:53.399 Why then do we hold back from him 00:13:53.399 --> 00:13:55.399 while people are hastening toward him?" 00:13:55.399 --> 00:13:57.500 Then I said, 00:13:57.500 --> 00:13:59.500 "As for me, 00:13:59.500 --> 00:14:01.500 I am resolved to set out for him 00:14:01.500 --> 00:14:03.500 in the morning. 00:14:03.500 --> 00:14:05.500 So whoever among you wishes 00:14:05.500 --> 00:14:07.500 to accompany me, 00:14:07.500 --> 00:14:09.500 let him get ready." 00:14:09.500 --> 00:14:11.500 Thus, I came before the Prophet (peace be upon him) 00:14:11.500 --> 00:14:13.500 alongside my people, 00:14:13.500 --> 00:14:15.500 bringing gifts with us, 00:14:15.500 --> 00:14:17.500 and declaring our Islam 00:14:17.500 --> 00:14:19.529 together. 00:14:19.529 --> 00:14:21.529 The people of Medina rejoiced over us 00:14:21.529 --> 00:14:23.529 with the greatest joy, 00:14:23.529 --> 00:14:25.529 for never before in any Arab household 00:14:25.529 --> 00:14:27.529 had eleven 00:14:27.529 --> 00:14:29.529 brothers from a single father embraced Islam together, 00:14:29.529 --> 00:14:31.529 accompanied by four hundred horsemen. 00:14:34.360 --> 00:14:36.360 The Prophet (peace be upon him) said 00:14:36.360 --> 00:14:38.360 concerning us: 00:14:38.360 --> 00:14:40.360 "Faith belongs to certain households, 00:14:40.360 --> 00:14:42.360 and hypocrisy belongs to certain households." 00:14:42.360 --> 00:14:44.360 And he declared that our households 00:14:44.360 --> 00:14:46.360 were among the households of faith. 00:14:46.360 --> 00:14:48.360 Concerning us, the words of Allah 00:14:48.360 --> 00:14:50.360 the Exalted were revealed: 00:14:50.360 --> 00:14:52.360 "And of the bedouins are some who 00:14:52.360 --> 00:14:54.360 believe in Allah 00:14:54.360 --> 00:14:56.360 and the Last Day, 00:14:56.360 --> 00:14:58.360 and look upon what they spend 00:14:58.360 --> 00:15:00.360 as means of nearness 00:15:00.360 --> 00:15:02.360 to Allah and blessings from 00:15:02.360 --> 00:15:04.360 the Messenger. 00:15:04.360 --> 00:15:06.360 Indeed, 00:15:06.360 --> 00:15:08.360 they are a means of nearness 00:15:08.360 --> 00:15:10.360 for them. Allah will admit 00:15:10.360 --> 00:15:12.360 them into His mercy. 00:15:12.360 --> 00:15:14.360 Indeed, 00:15:14.360 --> 00:15:16.360 Allah is Forgiving and Merciful." 00:15:16.360 --> 00:15:20.379 I took part in the Ridda (Apostasy) 00:15:20.379 --> 00:15:22.379 Wars during the caliphate of 00:15:22.379 --> 00:15:24.379 al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), 00:15:24.379 --> 00:15:26.379 and then in the Islamic conquests 00:15:26.379 --> 00:15:28.379 during the caliphate of 'Umar 00:15:28.379 --> 00:15:30.379 (may Allah be pleased with him), 00:15:30.379 --> 00:15:32.379 until the great Battle 00:15:32.379 --> 00:15:34.379 of Nihawand arrived— 00:15:34.379 --> 00:15:36.440 known as the "Conquest of Conquests." 00:15:36.440 --> 00:15:38.440 There, the Caliph appointed me commander 00:15:38.440 --> 00:15:40.440 over the Muslim army 00:15:40.440 --> 00:15:42.440 marching to fight the Persians. 00:15:42.440 --> 00:15:44.440 I marched with them 00:15:44.440 --> 00:15:46.440 to where the two armies met, 00:15:46.440 --> 00:15:48.440 and I commanded the Muslim army 00:15:48.440 --> 00:15:50.440 not to fight until 00:15:50.440 --> 00:15:52.440 I gave them leave. 00:15:52.440 --> 00:15:54.440 I addressed them, saying: 00:15:54.440 --> 00:15:56.440 "I shall proclaim the takbir three times. 00:15:56.440 --> 00:15:58.440 When I make the third takbir, 00:15:58.440 --> 00:16:00.440 I will charge 00:16:00.440 --> 00:16:02.440 against the enemy, 00:16:02.440 --> 00:16:04.440 so charge along with me!" 00:16:04.440 --> 00:16:06.440 Then I supplicated Allah, saying: 00:16:06.440 --> 00:16:08.440 "O Allah, grant glory to Your religion, 00:16:08.440 --> 00:16:10.440 grant victory to Your servants, 00:16:10.440 --> 00:16:12.440 and make me the first 00:16:12.440 --> 00:16:14.440 martyr today! 00:16:14.440 --> 00:16:16.570 O Allah, I ask You 00:16:16.570 --> 00:16:18.570 to delight my eyes with a victory 00:16:18.570 --> 00:16:20.570 that brings glory to 00:16:20.570 --> 00:16:22.570 Islam, 00:16:22.570 --> 00:16:24.730 and to take my soul as a martyr!" 00:16:24.730 --> 00:16:26.730 The people wept out of deep 00:16:26.730 --> 00:16:28.820 emotion. 00:16:28.820 --> 00:16:30.820 The battle raged on the outskirts 00:16:30.820 --> 00:16:32.820 of Nihawand, 00:16:32.820 --> 00:16:34.820 and I led the battle with rare 00:16:34.820 --> 00:16:36.820 bravery, until 00:16:36.820 --> 00:16:38.820 I attained the martyrdom that 00:16:38.820 --> 00:16:40.820 I had long yearned for, 00:16:40.820 --> 00:16:42.820 and the great victory was achieved 00:16:42.820 --> 00:16:44.820 which I had implored of Allah. 00:16:44.820 --> 00:16:47.110 Then a man came to me 00:16:47.110 --> 00:16:49.110 with water in a vessel, 00:16:49.110 --> 00:16:51.110 and he poured it over my face 00:16:51.110 --> 00:16:53.110 to wash away the dust. 00:16:53.110 --> 00:16:55.110 I asked, "Who is this?" 00:16:55.110 --> 00:16:57.110 and he replied, 00:16:57.110 --> 00:16:59.210 "Ma'qil Ibn Yasar." 00:16:59.210 --> 00:17:01.210 I asked, "How did the people fare?" 00:17:01.210 --> 00:17:03.210 He answered, 00:17:03.210 --> 00:17:05.210 "Allah has granted them victory." 00:17:05.210 --> 00:17:07.210 So I said, 00:17:07.210 --> 00:17:09.240 "Praise be to Allah! 00:17:09.240 --> 00:17:11.240 Write to 'Umar and inform him of this." 00:17:11.240 --> 00:17:13.339 Then departed 00:17:13.339 --> 00:17:15.529 my soul. 00:17:15.529 --> 00:17:17.529 The bearer of glad tidings went with the news 00:17:17.529 --> 00:17:19.529 to the Commander of the Faithful, may Allah be pleased with him, 00:17:19.529 --> 00:17:21.529 saying to him, 00:17:21.529 --> 00:17:23.529 "Allah has granted you victory, 00:17:23.529 --> 00:17:25.529 the greatest of triumphs, 00:17:25.529 --> 00:17:27.619 and the commander has been martyred." 00:17:27.619 --> 00:17:29.619 Thereupon, 'Umar exclaimed, 00:17:29.619 --> 00:17:31.619 "Truly, to Allah we belong, and truly, 00:17:31.619 --> 00:17:33.690 to Him we shall return!" 00:17:33.690 --> 00:17:35.690 And he placed his hands over his face, 00:17:35.690 --> 00:17:37.690 weeping over me, 00:17:37.690 --> 00:17:39.690 until his voice rose 00:17:39.690 --> 00:17:42.009 in lamentation. 00:17:42.009 --> 00:17:44.839 So, who am I? By the One in Whose hand is my soul, 00:19:14.619 --> 00:19:17.619 you shall not touch me after saying what you said, 00:19:17.619 --> 00:19:21.869 until Allah delivers His judgment concerning us." 00:19:21.869 --> 00:19:25.869 Then I came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:19:25.869 --> 00:19:27.869 and sat before him, 00:19:27.869 --> 00:19:31.869 mentioning to him what I had suffered from my husband. 00:19:31.869 --> 00:19:34.869 I began complaining to him of his ill-temper, 00:19:34.869 --> 00:19:38.869 and then I related the pronouncement of zihar he had made against me. 00:19:38.869 --> 00:19:41.869 So the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said, 00:19:41.869 --> 00:19:46.059 "I see you as nothing other than unlawful to him." 00:19:46.059 --> 00:19:48.059 I said, "O Messenger of Allah, 00:19:48.059 --> 00:19:50.059 I have grown advanced in years, 00:19:50.059 --> 00:19:52.059 my bones have weakened, 00:19:52.059 --> 00:19:54.099 and I have children by him; 00:19:54.099 --> 00:19:57.099 if I leave them to him, they will be neglected, 00:19:57.099 --> 00:20:00.259 and if I keep them with me, they will starve." 00:20:00.259 --> 00:20:05.259 Yet the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, kept saying, 00:20:05.259 --> 00:20:08.259 "I see you as nothing other than unlawful to him." 00:20:08.259 --> 00:20:13.420 And I continued to plead with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, 00:20:13.420 --> 00:20:16.420 and by Allah, I did not leave my spot 00:20:16.420 --> 00:20:20.420 until the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, was overcome 00:20:20.420 --> 00:20:23.420 by that which used to overcome him of revelation. 00:20:23.420 --> 00:20:25.420 Then it lifted from him, 00:20:25.420 --> 00:20:27.420 and he said to me, 00:20:27.420 --> 00:20:31.420 "Allah has revealed Qur'an concerning you and your companion." 00:20:31.420 --> 00:20:35.480 Then he recited to me the opening of Surah al-Mujadilah. 00:20:35.480 --> 00:20:39.539 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, then said to me, 00:20:39.539 --> 00:20:42.539 "Tell him to emancipate a slave." 00:20:42.539 --> 00:20:44.579 I said, "O Messenger of Allah, 00:20:44.579 --> 00:20:47.579 he possesses nothing to emancipate." 00:20:47.579 --> 00:20:48.640 He said, 00:20:48.640 --> 00:20:51.640 "Then let him fast for two consecutive months." 00:20:51.640 --> 00:20:53.640 I replied, 00:20:53.640 --> 00:20:56.640 "By Allah, he is an old man; 00:20:56.640 --> 00:20:58.640 he has no endurance for fasting." 00:20:58.640 --> 00:20:59.769 He said, 00:20:59.769 --> 00:21:02.769 "Then let him feed sixty poor persons." 00:21:02.769 --> 00:21:04.769 I replied, 00:21:04.769 --> 00:21:06.769 "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, 00:21:06.769 --> 00:21:08.769 he does not possess that either." 00:21:08.769 --> 00:21:13.960 Thereupon, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, gave me some dates 00:21:13.960 --> 00:21:14.960 and said, 00:21:14.960 --> 00:21:17.960 "Go and give this in charity on his behalf, 00:21:17.960 --> 00:21:21.960 and then treat your cousin kindly." 00:21:21.960 --> 00:21:24.759 And so I did. 00:21:24.759 --> 00:21:26.759 Then, one day, 00:21:26.759 --> 00:21:30.759 the Caliph 'Umar Ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, came out of the mosque 00:21:30.759 --> 00:21:33.759 accompanied by al-Jarud al-'Abdi, 00:21:33.759 --> 00:21:35.759 who was among the Arab nobility. 00:21:35.759 --> 00:21:38.759 'Umar saw me on the road, 00:21:38.759 --> 00:21:40.759 so he greeted me with peace, 00:21:40.759 --> 00:21:42.759 and I returned the greeting. 00:21:42.759 --> 00:21:44.759 Then I said, 00:21:44.759 --> 00:21:46.759 "Gently, O 'Umar! 00:21:46.759 --> 00:21:50.759 I remember you when you were called 'Umayr in the marketplace of 'Ukaz, 00:21:50.759 --> 00:21:53.819 startling boys with your stick. 00:21:53.819 --> 00:21:57.819 Days did not long pass before you were named 'Umar, 00:21:57.819 --> 00:22:02.819 and not long after that, you were named Commander of the Faithful. 00:22:02.819 --> 00:22:05.950 So fear Allah regarding your subjects, 00:22:05.950 --> 00:22:08.980 and know that whoever fears the threat of punishment 00:22:08.980 --> 00:22:10.980 finds what was distant drawn near, 00:22:10.980 --> 00:22:12.980 and whoever fears death 00:22:12.980 --> 00:22:14.980 dreads missing his chance to do good." 00:22:14.980 --> 00:22:17.140 Al-Jarud said to me, 00:22:17.140 --> 00:22:21.140 "You have spoken too harshly and excessively to the Commander of the Faithful!" 00:22:21.140 --> 00:22:23.240 But 'Umar said to him, 00:22:23.240 --> 00:22:24.240 "Leave her! 00:22:24.240 --> 00:22:26.240 Do you not know who she is? 00:22:26.240 --> 00:22:31.240 This is the woman whose plea Allah heard from above the seven heavens; 00:22:31.240 --> 00:22:35.240 by Allah, 'Umar is all the more duty-bound to listen to her." 00:22:35.240 --> 00:22:37.460 So, who am I? 00:23:45.099 --> 00:23:48.099 I am the cousin of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:23:48.099 --> 00:23:50.099 and his foster brother through nursing. 00:23:50.099 --> 00:23:54.259 I was his close companion prior to his prophetic mission, 00:23:54.259 --> 00:23:58.259 and one of the people who resembled him most in appearance. 00:23:58.259 --> 00:24:01.450 However, when the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:24:01.450 --> 00:24:03.450 was sent with the Message 00:24:03.450 --> 00:24:06.450 and called his people to Islam, 00:24:06.450 --> 00:24:09.450 I despised him and showed him hostility, 00:24:09.450 --> 00:24:12.450 lampooning him and his Companions in my poetry. 00:24:12.450 --> 00:24:16.700 When the Prophet, peace be upon him, migrated 00:24:16.700 --> 00:24:18.700 to Madinah, 00:24:18.700 --> 00:24:25.900 I did not miss a single battle that Quraysh waged against the Muslims. 00:24:25.900 --> 00:24:29.900 Consequently, the Prophet, peace be upon him, became angry with me 00:24:29.900 --> 00:24:32.730 and declared my blood forfeit. 00:24:32.730 --> 00:24:36.730 I remained in Makkah until the Conquest came, 00:24:36.730 --> 00:24:40.730 and then I realized that I had no escape except to embrace Islam 00:24:40.730 --> 00:24:45.789 and place my hand in the hand of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him. 00:24:45.789 --> 00:24:49.789 So I went out to him before he reached Makkah with his army, 00:24:49.789 --> 00:24:53.789 accompanied by my son and a man from our kin. 00:24:53.789 --> 00:24:57.789 We met the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, 00:24:57.789 --> 00:25:01.789 at Thaniyyat al-'Uqab between Makkah and Madinah, 00:25:01.789 --> 00:25:04.789 and we requested permission to enter his presence. 00:25:04.789 --> 00:25:08.789 Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her, interceded with him on our behalf, 00:25:08.789 --> 00:25:11.789 but he, peace be upon him, said, 00:25:11.789 --> 00:25:14.789 "I have no need of them." 00:25:14.789 --> 00:25:17.789 When we learned of that, I said, 00:25:17.789 --> 00:25:23.789 "By Allah, either the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, grants me permission, 00:25:23.789 --> 00:25:26.789 or I will take this son of mine by the hand, 00:25:26.789 --> 00:25:32.789 and we will wander the earth until we die of thirst or hunger." 00:25:32.789 --> 00:25:38.049 When that reached the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, 00:25:38.049 --> 00:25:41.049 his heart softened toward us and he granted us permission. 00:25:41.049 --> 00:25:44.049 So we entered his presence and embraced Islam. 00:25:44.049 --> 00:25:48.259 From the very first moments of my Islam, 00:25:48.259 --> 00:25:51.259 I set out to make up for all the good that had passed me by, 00:25:51.259 --> 00:25:55.259 becoming a devoted worshipper, frequently prostrating, and a warrior striving in Allah's cause. 00:25:55.259 --> 00:26:00.259 I went out with the Messenger, peace be upon him, during the Conquest of Makkah 00:26:00.259 --> 00:26:03.259 and the expeditions that followed it. 00:26:03.259 --> 00:26:09.259 On the day of Hunayn, I was among those who stood firm beside the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him; 00:26:09.259 --> 00:26:13.259 I stayed by his side and did not leave him for a single moment, 00:26:13.259 --> 00:26:19.259 holding the reins of the mule of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, with my left hand, 00:26:19.259 --> 00:26:24.259 while striking at the necks of the polytheists with my right. 00:26:24.259 --> 00:26:31.259 This continued until the Muslims rallied back to the battlefield around their Prophet, peace be upon him, 00:26:31.259 --> 00:26:35.519 and Allah decreed for them a manifest victory. 00:26:35.519 --> 00:26:38.519 When the dust of battle cleared, 00:26:38.519 --> 00:26:43.519 the Messenger, peace be upon him, turned to me and said, 00:26:43.519 --> 00:26:46.650 "Who is this? My brother?" 00:26:46.650 --> 00:26:51.650 No sooner did I hear the word "my brother" from him, peace be upon him, 00:26:51.650 --> 00:26:55.680 than my heart soared with joy; 00:26:55.680 --> 00:26:59.680 I threw myself at his feet, kissing them. 00:26:59.680 --> 00:27:03.680 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, praised me 00:27:03.680 --> 00:27:06.680 and bore witness that I was destined for Paradise, 00:27:06.680 --> 00:27:11.029 declaring that I would be among the masters of the youth of the people of Paradise. 00:27:11.029 --> 00:27:13.799 So, who am I? 00:28:00.869 --> 00:28:05.869 A new challenge: Who am I? 00:28:05.869 --> 00:28:10.869 A new challenge: Who am I? 00:28:10.869 --> 00:28:20.940 I am one of the Companions, from the noblemen of Yemen and a chieftain among the lords of Hadramawt, 00:28:20.940 --> 00:28:22.940 and a son of its kings. 00:28:22.940 --> 00:28:25.940 I embraced Islam out of genuine longing for the faith, 00:28:25.940 --> 00:28:30.039 so the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, honored me, 00:28:30.039 --> 00:28:36.039 bestowed gifts upon me as kings are given, and praised me generously. 00:28:36.039 --> 00:28:38.039 While we were in Hadramawt, 00:28:38.039 --> 00:28:43.619 word reached us of the emergence of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). 00:28:43.619 --> 00:28:47.619 So I set out to him as an envoy on behalf of my people, 00:28:47.619 --> 00:28:50.619 until I arrived in Medina. 00:28:50.619 --> 00:28:53.619 I met his Companions before meeting him, 00:28:53.650 --> 00:28:55.650 and they said to me, 00:28:55.650 --> 00:28:59.650 "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) gave us glad tidings of your coming 00:28:59.650 --> 00:29:03.650 three days before you arrived among us." 00:29:03.650 --> 00:29:06.650 Then I met him favorably; 00:29:07.779 --> 00:29:10.779 then I met him, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:29:10.779 --> 00:29:14.779 and he welcomed me warmly, drew my seating place close to him, 00:29:14.779 --> 00:29:16.779 spread out his cloak for me, 00:29:16.779 --> 00:29:19.000 and seated me upon it. 00:29:19.000 --> 00:29:22.000 Then he called the people, and they gathered around him. 00:29:22.000 --> 00:29:27.000 He then ascended the pulpit, took me up with him, and seated me just below him. 00:29:27.000 --> 00:29:30.029 Then he praised and glorified Allah, 00:29:30.029 --> 00:29:32.029 and said, 00:29:32.029 --> 00:29:34.029 "O people! 00:29:34.029 --> 00:29:38.029 This man has come to you from a distant land, 00:29:38.029 --> 00:29:40.029 from the land of Hadramawt, 00:29:40.029 --> 00:29:44.029 neither out of fear nor out of worldly desire; 00:29:44.029 --> 00:29:47.029 he came solely out of love for Allah and His Messenger. 00:29:47.029 --> 00:29:49.099 Treat him gently, 00:29:49.099 --> 00:29:52.099 for he is accustomed to royalty." 00:29:52.099 --> 00:29:54.259 Then he said to me, 00:29:54.259 --> 00:29:57.259 "You are among the remnant of the sons of kings; 00:29:57.259 --> 00:30:00.259 may Allah bless you, and your children, 00:30:00.259 --> 00:30:02.259 and your children's children." 00:30:02.259 --> 00:30:06.579 Then he stepped down from the pulpit, and I stepped down with him. 00:30:06.579 --> 00:30:08.579 I said, "O Messenger of Allah, 00:30:08.579 --> 00:30:12.579 my people have dispossessed me of a right that belongs to me." 00:30:12.579 --> 00:30:14.579 He replied, 00:30:14.579 --> 00:30:16.829 "I shall grant you double its worth." 00:30:16.829 --> 00:30:20.829 And the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) ordered 00:30:20.829 --> 00:30:22.859 a residence in Medina for me, 00:30:22.859 --> 00:30:26.859 and commanded Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) 00:30:26.859 --> 00:30:29.859 to guide me to my residence. 00:30:29.859 --> 00:30:31.859 So I set out riding my mount, 00:30:31.859 --> 00:30:34.859 while Mu'awiyah walked on foot. 00:30:34.859 --> 00:30:37.859 When we were part of the way there, 00:30:37.859 --> 00:30:39.859 Mu'awiyah said to me, 00:30:39.859 --> 00:30:41.859 "Let me ride behind you." 00:30:41.859 --> 00:30:42.859 I said, 00:30:42.859 --> 00:30:45.859 "You are not of those who ride behind kings." 00:30:45.859 --> 00:30:46.960 He said, 00:30:46.960 --> 00:30:49.960 "Then give me your sandals." 00:30:49.960 --> 00:30:51.089 I replied, 00:30:51.089 --> 00:30:54.089 "Protect your feet in the shadow of the camel." 00:30:54.089 --> 00:30:57.089 It was not out of miserliness that I withheld letting him ride behind me 00:30:57.089 --> 00:30:59.089 or giving him my sandals, 00:30:59.089 --> 00:31:02.089 but rather I disliked being reproached for it, 00:31:02.089 --> 00:31:06.089 as I was newly accustomed to Islam at the time. 00:31:06.089 --> 00:31:09.730 Later, when Mu'awiyah became the ruler of the Levant, 00:31:09.730 --> 00:31:11.730 I came before him as a visitor, 00:31:11.730 --> 00:31:14.730 and he seated me beside him on the royal couch, 00:31:14.730 --> 00:31:16.730 reminding me of my encounter with him. 00:31:16.730 --> 00:31:18.730 I felt ashamed before him, 00:31:18.730 --> 00:31:23.730 and wished that I had carried him before me. 00:31:23.730 --> 00:31:26.019 So, who am I? A place of worship which was found upon duty (to Allah) from the first day is more worthy that thou shouldst stand (to pray) therein, wherein are men who love to purify themselves. Allah loveth the purifiers.” (9:108) 00:33:13.069 --> 00:33:17.069 "And Allah loves those who purify themselves." 00:33:17.069 --> 00:33:21.869 After the passing of the Prophet (peace be upon him), 00:33:21.869 --> 00:33:25.869 the Ansar gathered at the Saqifah of Banu Sa'idah 00:33:25.869 --> 00:33:27.869 to select the Caliph. 00:33:27.869 --> 00:33:29.869 I stepped out from among them, 00:33:29.869 --> 00:33:32.900 and we encountered Abu Bakr al-Siddiq 00:33:32.900 --> 00:33:36.900 and Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with them both, 00:33:36.900 --> 00:33:40.900 as they were heading toward the Saqifah of Banu Sa'idah. 00:33:40.900 --> 00:33:44.900 We informed them of the consensus the people were leaning toward, 00:33:44.900 --> 00:33:47.970 and we asked them, "Where do you intend to go?" 00:33:47.970 --> 00:33:52.970 They said, "We seek our brothers from among the Ansar." 00:33:52.970 --> 00:33:54.970 So we said to them... 00:33:55.970 --> 00:33:58.970 I lived until the caliphate of the Commander of the Faithful, 00:33:58.970 --> 00:34:01.970 Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), 00:34:01.970 --> 00:34:03.970 and when I passed away, 00:34:03.970 --> 00:34:09.769 Umar stood over my grave and said, 00:34:09.769 --> 00:34:13.769 "No one among the inhabitants of the earth can say 00:34:13.769 --> 00:34:16.769 that he is better than his companion— 00:34:16.769 --> 00:34:18.769 none shall be able to say 00:34:18.769 --> 00:34:20.800 that he is better than his companion— 00:34:20.800 --> 00:34:22.800 none shall be able to say 00:34:22.800 --> 00:34:26.800 that he is better than the dweller of this grave. 00:34:26.800 --> 00:34:30.860 Never did the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) hoist 00:34:30.860 --> 00:34:34.860 a banner except that he was beneath its shade." 00:34:34.860 --> 00:34:37.179 So, who am I? 00:35:39.099 --> 00:35:45.400 I am one of the Emigrant Companions, 00:35:45.400 --> 00:35:49.400 and one of the ten promised Paradise. 00:35:49.400 --> 00:35:51.400 I embraced Islam early on in Mecca, 00:35:51.400 --> 00:35:57.400 witnessed all the battles alongside the Prophet (peace be upon him), 00:35:57.400 --> 00:36:01.400 and was among the champions and commanders in warfare. 00:36:01.400 --> 00:36:05.070 As a young man, I was dutiful to my mother, 00:36:05.070 --> 00:36:07.070 possessing intense love for her, 00:36:07.070 --> 00:36:09.070 and she felt the same toward me. 00:36:09.070 --> 00:36:10.070 When I embraced Islam, 00:36:10.070 --> 00:36:12.070 she said to me, 00:36:12.070 --> 00:36:15.070 "What is this religion you have newly invented? 00:36:15.070 --> 00:36:17.070 You must abandon this religion of yours, 00:36:17.070 --> 00:36:21.070 or else I will neither eat nor drink until I die, 00:36:21.070 --> 00:36:23.070 so that you will be shamed on my account, 00:36:23.070 --> 00:36:24.070 and it will be said, 00:36:24.070 --> 00:36:26.070 'O killer of his own mother!'" 00:36:26.070 --> 00:36:28.170 So I said to her, 00:36:28.170 --> 00:36:30.170 "Do not do so, dear mother, 00:36:30.170 --> 00:36:34.170 for I will never abandon my religion, whatever you may do." 00:36:34.170 --> 00:36:38.360 She went on for a day and a night without eating, 00:36:38.360 --> 00:36:41.360 until morning came and she was completely exhausted. 00:36:41.360 --> 00:36:42.360 I then said, 00:36:42.360 --> 00:36:44.360 "By Allah, dear mother, 00:36:44.360 --> 00:36:47.360 if you possessed a hundred souls 00:36:47.360 --> 00:36:49.360 and they departed one by one, 00:36:49.360 --> 00:36:53.360 I would never abandon this religion of mine for anything; 00:36:53.360 --> 00:36:56.360 so eat if you wish, or do not eat." 00:36:56.360 --> 00:36:58.420 When she saw that, 00:36:58.420 --> 00:37:00.420 she ate and drank. 00:37:00.420 --> 00:37:04.420 And Allah revealed concerning me His words, the Exalted: 00:37:04.420 --> 00:37:09.840 "But if they strive to make you associate with Me 00:37:09.840 --> 00:37:12.840 that of which you have no knowledge, 00:37:12.840 --> 00:37:15.840 do not obey them..." 00:37:15.840 --> 00:37:19.840 “But if they strive with thee to make thee ascribe unto Me as partner that of which thou hast no knowledge, then obey them not. Consort with them in the world kindly, and follow the path of him who repenteth unto Me. Then unto Me will be your return, and I shall tell you what ye used to do -” (31:15) 00:37:19.840 --> 00:37:22.840 “But if they strive with thee to make thee ascribe unto Me as partner that of which thou hast no knowledge, then obey them not. Then unto Me will be your return, and I shall tell you what ye used to do -” (31:15) 00:37:22.840 --> 00:37:25.840 "...then unto Me is your return, 00:37:25.840 --> 00:37:29.840 and I will inform you of what you used to 00:37:29.840 --> 00:37:31.840 do." 00:37:31.840 --> 00:37:34.960 I was also the first to shed 00:37:34.960 --> 00:37:36.960 blood in the cause of Allah. 00:37:36.960 --> 00:37:40.960 In Mecca, whenever we wished to pray, 00:37:40.960 --> 00:37:42.960 we would go out to the mountain passes 00:37:42.960 --> 00:37:47.059 and conceal our prayer from our people. 00:37:47.059 --> 00:37:50.059 While I was with a group of Muslims 00:37:50.059 --> 00:37:52.059 in one of the ravines of Mecca, 00:37:52.059 --> 00:37:55.059 a band of Quraysh suddenly came upon us 00:37:55.059 --> 00:37:58.059 and reviled our religion, 00:37:58.059 --> 00:38:00.059 so we clashed in a fight. 00:38:00.059 --> 00:38:02.059 I struck Abdullah ibn Khatal 00:38:02.059 --> 00:38:04.059 with a camel's jawbone 00:38:04.059 --> 00:38:06.090 and split his head open; 00:38:06.090 --> 00:38:12.039 that was the very first blood shed in Islam. 00:38:12.039 --> 00:38:15.039 I was also the first to shoot an arrow 00:38:15.039 --> 00:38:17.039 in the cause of Allah, 00:38:17.039 --> 00:38:20.070 and I was among the most skilled archers. 00:38:20.070 --> 00:38:22.070 At the Battle of Uhud, 00:38:22.070 --> 00:38:25.070 the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, emptied 00:38:25.070 --> 00:38:27.070 his quiver for me, 00:38:27.070 --> 00:38:29.070 and said, "Shoot, 00:38:29.070 --> 00:38:31.070 may my father and mother be ransomed for you!" 00:38:31.070 --> 00:38:33.070 So I shot at the polytheists 00:38:33.070 --> 00:38:38.070 and repelled them from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). 00:38:38.070 --> 00:38:42.070 I saw one of them wreaking havoc among the Muslims, 00:38:42.070 --> 00:38:45.070 so I drew an arrow that had no broadhead, 00:38:45.070 --> 00:38:47.070 struck his forehead, 00:38:47.070 --> 00:38:49.070 and he fell on his back 00:38:49.070 --> 00:38:51.070 with his private parts exposed, 00:38:51.070 --> 00:38:55.070 whereat the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) laughed 00:38:55.070 --> 00:38:58.360 until his molar teeth showed. 00:38:58.360 --> 00:39:01.190 So, who am I? 00:40:02.980 --> 00:40:08.300 I am one of the Companions, 00:40:08.300 --> 00:40:10.300 from the Ansar. 00:40:10.300 --> 00:40:13.300 I was the foremost authority among the Qur'an reciters and scholars of inheritance, 00:40:13.300 --> 00:40:16.460 and the mufti of Medina. 00:40:16.460 --> 00:40:21.460 I embraced Islam as soon as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) arrived in Medina, 00:40:21.460 --> 00:40:26.070 when I was only eleven years old. 00:40:26.070 --> 00:40:31.070 My people from Banu al-Najjar brought me to the Prophet (peace be upon him) 00:40:31.070 --> 00:40:33.070 and said to him, 00:40:33.070 --> 00:40:38.070 "This boy has memorized seventeen surahs of the Qur'an, 00:40:38.070 --> 00:40:40.070 so listen to him." 00:40:40.070 --> 00:40:43.070 He listened to me and was delighted with my recitation. 00:40:43.070 --> 00:40:45.070 Then he said to me: 00:40:45.070 --> 00:40:48.070 "Learn for me the writing of the Jews, 00:40:48.070 --> 00:40:51.070 for indeed, I do not trust them with my correspondence." 00:40:51.070 --> 00:40:54.070 So I learned the Hebrew script 00:40:54.070 --> 00:40:57.070 until I mastered reading and writing it 00:40:57.070 --> 00:41:00.070 in just fifteen days. 00:41:00.070 --> 00:41:02.070 Then he said to me: 00:41:02.070 --> 00:41:04.070 "Learn Syriac." 00:41:04.070 --> 00:41:08.070 So I learned it in seventeen days. 00:41:08.070 --> 00:41:12.070 The Prophet (peace be upon him) was deeply impressed by that, 00:41:12.070 --> 00:41:15.070 and after that I came to be known as 00:41:15.070 --> 00:41:19.070 the translator of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). 00:41:19.070 --> 00:41:22.070 I also mastered the laws of inheritance, 00:41:22.070 --> 00:41:26.070 until the Prophet (peace be upon him) testified of me 00:41:26.070 --> 00:41:30.070 that I was the most knowledgeable of this Ummah in the laws of inheritance. 00:41:30.070 --> 00:41:35.710 During the Wars of Apostasy after the passing of the Prophet (peace be upon him), 00:41:35.710 --> 00:41:40.710 and after a great number of the reciters of the Qur'an were martyred at the Battle of al-Yamamah, 00:41:40.710 --> 00:41:47.710 'Umar Ibn al-Khattab came to the Caliph of the Muslims, Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both), 00:41:47.710 --> 00:41:50.710 and advised him to compile the Mus-haf 00:41:50.710 --> 00:41:53.710 before death claimed the rest of the reciters. 00:41:53.710 --> 00:41:57.710 This matter weighed heavily on Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), 00:41:57.710 --> 00:42:01.710 so he prayed the istikharah prayer to his Lord and consulted the Companions. 00:42:01.710 --> 00:42:05.710 Then, when he resolved to compile the Mus-haf, 00:42:05.710 --> 00:42:11.710 he summoned me and said: "You are an intelligent young man whom we do not suspect of any fault, 00:42:11.710 --> 00:42:16.780 and you used to record the divine revelation for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him); 00:42:16.780 --> 00:42:19.780 so track down the Qur'an and collect it." 00:42:19.780 --> 00:42:26.780 I said: "How can you do something that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) did not do?" 00:42:26.780 --> 00:42:30.780 He replied: "By Allah, it is good." 00:42:30.780 --> 00:42:33.809 Abu Bakr kept urging me 00:42:33.809 --> 00:42:36.809 until Allah opened my heart to it. 00:42:36.809 --> 00:42:39.809 So I undertook the compilation of the Mus-haf. 00:42:39.809 --> 00:42:43.809 By Allah, had they tasked me with moving a mountain from its place, 00:42:43.809 --> 00:42:47.809 it would not have been heavier upon me than what they commanded me to do. 00:42:47.809 --> 00:42:54.030 I began tracing its verses from pieces of parchment, shoulder blades, and the hearts of men, 00:42:55.030 --> 00:42:58.030 until I completed the mission. 00:42:58.030 --> 00:43:05.699 Later, following the expansion of the Islamic conquests during the caliphate of 'Uthman Ibn 'Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), 00:43:05.699 --> 00:43:08.699 when people began to dispute over the modes of recitation, 00:43:08.699 --> 00:43:14.699 the Caliph commanded me to compile the Qur'an once more into a single standardized recitation. 00:43:14.699 --> 00:43:20.699 It was the final recitation that I had heard from the Prophet (peace be upon him) 00:43:20.699 --> 00:43:24.699 during the final review with Jibril (peace be upon him). 00:43:24.699 --> 00:43:32.800 I did so, and attained the honor of compiling it once again.
