of Ignorance, 00:00:51.640 --> 00:00:54.640 and a nobleman among the most prominent of the Arabs, 00:00:54.640 --> 00:00:58.640 and one of the few known for his chivalry. 00:00:58.640 --> 00:01:00.640 His fire was never extinguished, 00:01:00.640 --> 00:01:03.640 and his door was never closed to a traveler. 00:01:03.640 --> 00:01:05.640 He would feed the hungry, 00:01:05.640 --> 00:01:07.640 provide security for the fearful, 00:01:07.640 --> 00:01:09.640 and grant refuge to those seeking it. 00:01:09.640 --> 00:01:13.640 Beyond that, he was a man of letters, intelligent and sagacious, 00:01:13.640 --> 00:01:15.640 a poet of refined sensibility, 00:01:15.640 --> 00:01:17.640 and delicate feelings, 00:01:17.640 --> 00:01:20.640 with a keen eye for the beauty and bitterness of eloquence, 00:01:20.640 --> 00:01:23.640 for words held a magical power over him. 00:01:23.640 --> 00:01:28.900 Tufayl left the dwellings of his people in Tihamah, heading toward Makkah, 00:01:28.900 --> 00:01:34.900 while the struggle was raging between the noble Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:01:34.900 --> 00:01:36.900 and the disbelievers of Quraysh. 00:01:36.900 --> 00:01:39.900 Each side wanted to win supporters for itself, 00:01:39.900 --> 00:01:42.900 and attract allies to its cause. 00:01:42.900 --> 00:01:47.900 The Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was calling to his Lord, 00:01:47.900 --> 00:01:49.900 with faith and truth as his weapons. 00:01:49.900 --> 00:01:51.900 The disbelievers of Quraysh, 00:01:51.900 --> 00:01:54.900 were resisting his call with every weapon, 00:01:54.900 --> 00:01:57.900 and turning people away from him by every means. 00:01:57.900 --> 00:02:02.900 Tufayl found himself entering this battle completely unprepared, 00:02:02.900 --> 00:02:05.900 and plunging into its depths without intent. 00:02:05.900 --> 00:02:08.960 He had not come to Makkah for this purpose, 00:02:08.960 --> 00:02:13.960 nor had the affair of Muhammad and Quraysh ever crossed his mind before. 00:02:13.960 --> 00:02:17.960 Hence, Tufayl ibn Amr al-Dawsi had 00:02:17.960 --> 00:02:20.960 an unforgettable story regarding this 00:02:28.150 --> 00:02:30.150 "I arrived in Makkah, 00:02:30.150 --> 00:02:34.180 and no sooner did the leaders of Quraysh see me than they approached me, 00:02:34.180 --> 00:02:37.180 welcoming me with the warmest of welcomes, 00:02:37.180 --> 00:02:40.340 and honoring me with the highest status among them. 00:02:40.340 --> 00:02:44.340 Then their leaders and elders gathered around me and said: 00:02:44.340 --> 00:02:48.340 'O Tufayl, you have come to our land, 00:02:48.340 --> 00:02:51.340 and this man who claims to be a prophet 00:02:51.340 --> 00:02:54.340 has corrupted our affairs, torn our unity apart, 00:02:54.340 --> 00:02:56.340 and scattered our community. 00:02:56.340 --> 00:03:00.340 We fear that what has befallen us 00:03:00.340 --> 00:03:02.340 will befall you and your leadership over your people. 00:03:02.340 --> 00:03:04.340 So do not speak to the man, 00:03:04.340 --> 00:03:06.340 and do not listen to anything from him, 00:03:06.340 --> 00:03:09.340 for he has speech like magic, 00:03:09.340 --> 00:03:11.340 which separates a son from his father, 00:03:11.340 --> 00:03:13.340 a brother from his brother, 00:03:13.340 --> 00:03:16.340 and a wife from her husband.'" 00:03:16.340 --> 00:03:18.340 Tufayl said: 00:03:18.340 --> 00:03:22.340 "By Allah, they kept at me, telling me of his strange reports, 00:03:22.340 --> 00:03:27.340 and frightening me for myself and my people with his wondrous deeds, 00:03:27.340 --> 00:03:31.340 until I resolved not to go near him, 00:03:31.340 --> 00:03:35.340 and not to speak to him or hear anything from him. 00:03:35.340 --> 00:03:39.340 When I went to the Mosque to circumambulate the Ka'bah, 00:03:39.340 --> 00:03:44.340 and seek blessings from its idols, which we used to perform pilgrimage to and venerate, 00:03:44.340 --> 00:03:46.340 I stuffed my ears with cotton, 00:03:46.340 --> 00:03:50.340 for fear that something of Muhammad's speech might reach my hearing. 00:03:50.340 --> 00:03:53.340 But no sooner had I entered the Mosque 00:03:53.340 --> 00:03:57.340 than I found him standing, praying by the Ka'bah, 00:03:57.340 --> 00:03:59.340 a prayer different from our prayer, 00:03:59.340 --> 00:04:03.340 and worshipping in a way different from our worship. 00:04:03.340 --> 00:04:05.379 His sight captivated me, 00:04:05.379 --> 00:04:07.379 and his worship moved me, 00:04:07.379 --> 00:04:13.379 and I found myself drawing closer to him, little by little, without intending to, 00:04:13.379 --> 00:04:16.379 until I was near him. 00:04:16.379 --> 00:04:20.379 Allah willed that some of what he was saying should reach my ears, 00:04:20.379 --> 00:04:23.379 and I heard beautiful speech. 00:04:23.379 --> 00:04:25.410 I said to myself: 00:04:25.410 --> 00:04:27.410 'May your mother be bereaved of you, O Tufayl! 00:04:27.410 --> 00:04:30.439 You are an intelligent man and a poet, 00:04:30.439 --> 00:04:33.439 and the difference between good and evil is not hidden from you. I fear they might think it is a punishment 00:06:30.660 --> 00:06:33.660 that fell upon my face for abandoning their religion.' 00:06:33.660 --> 00:06:35.660 The light shifted, 00:06:35.660 --> 00:06:37.660 and fell upon the head of my whip. 00:06:37.660 --> 00:06:41.660 People began to see that light on my whip, 00:06:41.660 --> 00:06:43.660 like a hanging lantern, 00:06:43.660 --> 00:06:46.660 while I was descending to them from the mountain pass. 00:06:46.660 --> 00:06:48.660 When I descended, 00:06:48.660 --> 00:06:49.660 my father came to me, 00:06:49.660 --> 00:06:51.660 and he was a very old man. 00:06:51.660 --> 00:06:52.660 I said: 00:06:52.660 --> 00:06:55.660 'Stay away from me, O my father, 00:06:55.660 --> 00:06:57.660 for I am not of you, and you are not of so I may teach you what I have learned.' 00:07:17.660 --> 00:07:20.660 He went, washed, and purified his clothes, 00:07:20.660 --> 00:07:23.660 then came, and I presented Islam to him, 00:07:23.660 --> 00:07:25.660 and he accepted Islam. 00:07:25.660 --> 00:07:27.660 Then my wife came, 00:07:27.660 --> 00:07:29.660 and I said: 'Stay away from me, 00:07:29.660 --> 00:07:31.660 for I am not of 00:07:51.660 'Go and purify yourself with the water of Dhu al-Shara.' 00:07:51.660 --> 00:07:56.660 Dhu al-Shara was an idol of Daws, around which was water that flowed down from the mountain. 00:07:56.660 --> 00:07:57.660 She said: 00:07:57.660 --> 00:07:59.660 'May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, 00:07:59.660 --> 00:08:02.660 do you fear anything for the children from Dhu al-Shara?' 00:08:02.660 --> 00:08:03.660 I said: 00:08:03.660 --> 00:08:05.660 'Woe to you and to Dhu al-Shara! 00:08:05.660 --> 00:08:09.660 I told you to go and wash there, far away from the people, 00:08:09.660 --> 00:08:14.660 and I guarantee to you that this deaf stone will not do anything.' 00:08:14.660 --> 00:08:17.660 So she went, washed, and then came, 00:08:17.660 --> 00:08:19.660 and I presented Islam to her, 00:08:19.660 --> 00:08:20.660 and she accepted Islam. 00:08:20.660 --> 00:08:22.660 Then I called the Daws tribe, 00:08:22.660 --> 00:08:25.660 but they were slow to respond, except for Abu Hurayrah, 00:08:25.660 --> 00:08:28.660 for he was the fastest of people to accept Islam." 00:08:28.660 --> 00:08:30.750 Tufayl said: 00:08:30.750 --> 00:08:32.750 "Then I came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:08:32.750 --> 00:08:34.750 in Makkah, 00:08:34.750 --> 00:08:36.750 and with me was Abu Hurayrah. 00:08:36.750 --> 00:08:39.750 The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to me: 00:08:39.750 --> 00:08:41.750 'What is behind you, O Tufayl?' 00:08:41.750 --> 00:08:43.750 I said: 00:08:43.750 --> 00:08:46.750 'Hearts of Allah be upon him, stood up, 00:08:54.750 --> 00:08:56.750 performed ablution, prayed, 00:08:56.750 --> 00:08:58.750 and raised his hands to the sky. 00:08:58.750 --> 00:09:00.750 Abu Hurayrah said: 00:09:00.750 --> 00:09:02.750 'When I saw him doing that, 00:09:02.750 --> 00:09:05.750 I feared he would pray against my people and they would perish, 00:09:05.750 --> 00:09:07.750 so I said: 'O my people!' 00:09:07.750 --> 00:09:11.750 But the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:09:11.750 --> 00:09:12.750 began to say: 00:09:12.750 --> 00:09:14.750 'O Allah, guide the Daws! 00:09:14.750 --> 00:09:16.750 O Allah, guide the Daws! 00:09:16.750 --> 00:09:19.750 O Allah, guide the Daws!' 00:09:19.750 --> 00:09:21.850 Then he turned to Tufayl 00:09:21.850 --> peace be upon him, 00:09:43.850 --> 00:09:46.850 accompanied by eighty families from Daws. 00:09:46.850 --> 00:09:49.850 They had embraced Islam, and their Islam was sincere. 00:09:49.850 --> 00:09:53.850 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, was pleased with us, 00:09:53.850 --> 00:09:56.850 and he assigned us a share of the spoils of Khaybar along with the Muslims. 00:09:56.850 --> 00:09:57.850 We said, 00:09:57.850 --> 00:09:59.850 "O Messenger of Allah, 00:09:59.850 --> 00:10:02.850 place us on your right flank in every expedition you undertake, 00:10:02.850 --> 00:10:05.850 and let our battle cry be 'Mabrur' (Righteous)." 00:10:05.850 --> 00:10:08.039 Al-Tufayl said, 00:10:08.039 --> 00:10:12.039 "I remained with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, 00:10:12.039 --> 00:10:15.039 until Allah granted him the conquest of Mecca. 00:10:15.039 --> 00:10:17.039 I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, 00:10:17.039 --> 00:10:19.039 send me to Dhu al-Kaffayn, 00:10:19.039 --> 00:10:21.039 the idol of 'Amr ibn Humama, 00:10:21.039 --> 00:10:23.039 so that I may burn it.'" 00:10:23.039 --> 00:10:26.039 The Prophet, peace be upon him, gave him permission. 00:10:26.039 --> 00:10:29.039 He set out toward the idol with a detachment of his people. 00:10:29.039 --> 00:10:32.039 When he reached it and intended to burn it, 00:10:32.039 --> 00:10:35.039 men, women, and children gathered around him, 00:10:35.039 --> 00:10:37.039 harboring evil intentions toward him, 00:10:37.039 --> 00:10:40.039 waiting for a thunderbolt to strike him down 00:10:40.039 --> --> 00:11:49.070 While he was on his way to al-Yamama, 00:11:49.070 --> 00:11:50.070 he saw a vision. 00:11:50.070 --> 00:11:52.070 He said to his companions, 00:11:52.070 --> 00:11:54.070 "I have seen a vision, 00:11:54.070 --> 00:11:55.070 so interpret it for me." 00:11:55.070 --> 00:11:57.070 They asked, "What did you see?" 00:11:57.070 --> 00:11:58.070 He said, 00:11:58.070 --> 00:12:00.070 "I saw that my head had been shaved, 00:12:00.070 --> 00:12:03.070 that a bird had emerged from my mouth, 00:12:03.070 --> 00:12:06.070 and that a woman had taken me into her womb." 00:12:06.070 --> 00:12:10.070 "And I saw that my son 'Amr was seeking me urgently, 00:12:10.070 --> 00:12:13.139 but a barrier was placed between him and me." 00:12:13.139 --> 00:12:15.139 They said, "It is good." 00:12:15.139 --> 00:12:16.139 He said, 00:12:16.139 --> 00:12:19.139 "As for me, by Allah, I have interpreted it: 00:12:19.139 --> 00:12:21.139 As for the shaving of my head, 00:12:21.139 --> 00:12:23.139 it means it will be severed. 00:12:23.139 --> 00:12:26.139 As for the bird that emerged from my mouth, 00:12:26.139 --> 00:12:28.139 it is my soul. 00:12:28.139 --> 00:12:31.139 As for the woman who took me into her womb, 00:12:31.139 --> 00:12:32.139 it is the earth 00:12:32.139 --> 00:12:34.139 being dug for me, 00:12:34.139 --> 00:12:36.139 so that I may be buried in its depths. 00:12:36.139 --> 00:12:39.139 I hope to be killed as a martyr. 00:12:39.139 --> 00:12:41.139 As for my son seeking me, 00:12:41.139 --> 00:12:45.139 it means he is seeking the martyrdom that I shall attain, 00:12:45.139 --> 00:12:47.139 if Allah wills, 00:12:47.139 --> 00:12:50.139 but he will attain it later." 00:12:50.139 --> 00:12:52.139 In the Battle of al-Yamama, 00:12:52.139 --> 00:12:54.139 the noble Companion, 00:12:54.139 --> 00:12:56.139 al-Tufayl ibn 'Amr al-Dawsi, 00:12:56.139 --> 00:12:58.139 fought most valiantly, 00:12:58.139 --> 00:13:02.139 until he fell as a --> 00:13:10.139 and his right hand was severed. 00:13:10.139 --> 00:13:12.139 He returned to Medina, 00:13:12.139 --> 00:13:16.139 leaving behind his father and his hand on the soil of al-Yamama. 00:13:16.139 --> 00:13:19.230 During the Caliphate of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, 00:13:19.230 --> 00:13:21.230 'Amr ibn al-Tufayl entered upon him. 00:13:21.230 --> 00:13:24.230 Food was brought to the
