00:03:20.650 --> 00:03:22.650 delight overflowed upon their faces, 00:03:22.650 --> 00:03:24.680 and radiant happiness beamed from them. 00:03:24.680 --> 00:03:26.680 Thereafter, he took part in 00:03:26.680 --> 00:03:28.680 all the military expeditions undertaken by 00:03:28.680 --> 00:03:30.939 the Muslims. 00:03:30.939 --> 00:03:32.939 He entered Mecca alongside the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah 00:03:32.939 --> 00:03:34.939 be upon him, 00:03:34.939 --> 00:03:36.939 in the Year of the Conquest, 00:03:36.939 --> 00:03:38.939 being then twenty years of age. 00:03:38.939 --> 00:03:40.939 When the noble Prophet, 00:03:40.939 --> 00:03:42.939 upon him be the best of blessings 00:03:42.939 --> 00:03:44.939 and purest of peace, saw him, 00:03:44.939 --> 00:03:46.939 he began to praise him and say: 00:03:46.939 --> 00:03:48.939 "'Abdullah is indeed..." 00:03:48.939 --> 00:03:51.060 "'Abdullah is indeed..." 00:03:51.060 --> 00:03:53.060 'Abdullah Ibn 'Umar was 00:03:53.060 --> 00:03:55.060 a singular exemplar of a young man 00:03:55.060 --> 00:03:57.060 who grew up in the obedience of Allah, 00:03:57.060 --> 00:03:59.060 so much so that it was said: 00:03:59.060 --> 00:04:01.060 "The most master of himself among the youth of Quraysh 00:04:01.060 --> 00:04:03.060 was 'Abdullah Ibn 'Umar." 00:04:03.060 --> 00:04:05.060 And no wonder, 00:04:05.060 --> 00:04:07.060 for he was a young man 00:04:07.060 --> 00:04:09.060 whose heart was attached to the mosques. 00:04:09.060 --> 00:04:11.060 The mosque was his dwelling place 00:04:11.060 --> 00:04:13.060 whenever he sought rest, 00:04:13.060 --> 00:04:15.060 and the mosque was his sanctuary of worship 00:04:15.060 --> 00:04:17.129 whenever he desired devotion. 00:04:17.129 --> 00:04:19.129 He related about himself, saying: 00:04:19.129 --> 00:04:21.129 "Indeed, during the lifetime of the Messenger, 00:04:21.129 --> 00:04:23.129 peace be upon him, 00:04:23.129 --> 00:04:25.129 whenever anyone saw a vision, 00:04:25.129 --> 00:04:27.129 he would recount it to the Messenger of Allah, 00:04:27.129 --> 00:04:29.129 peace be upon him. 00:04:29.129 --> 00:04:31.129 At that time, I was an unmarried, 00:04:31.129 --> 00:04:33.129 young lad, 00:04:33.129 --> 00:04:35.160 and I used to sleep in the Prophet's Mosque. 00:04:35.160 --> 00:04:37.160 Then I saw in a dream as if 00:04:37.160 --> 00:04:39.160 two angels seized me and took 00:04:39.160 --> 00:04:41.160 me to the Fire, 00:04:41.160 --> 00:04:43.160 and behold, it had two horns like a well, 00:04:43.160 --> 00:04:45.160 and behold, I saw therein 00:04:45.160 --> 00:04:47.160 people whom I recognized. 00:04:47.160 --> 00:04:49.160 I began to say: 'I seek refuge in Allah from the Fire! 00:04:49.160 --> 00:04:51.160 I seek refuge in Allah from the Fire!' 00:04:51.160 --> 00:04:53.160 Then another angel met me 00:04:53.160 --> 00:04:55.160 and said: 00:04:55.160 --> 00:04:57.160 'You have nothing to fear; you 00:04:57.160 --> 00:04:59.189 shall not be alarmed.' 00:04:59.189 --> 00:05:01.189 So I recounted my dream to my sister, 00:05:01.189 --> 00:05:03.189 Mother of the Believers Hafsah, 00:05:03.189 --> 00:05:05.189 and she recounted it to the noble Messenger, 00:05:05.189 --> 00:05:07.189 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:05:07.189 --> 00:05:09.189 Thereupon he said: 00:05:09.189 --> 00:05:11.189 'What an excellent man 'Abdullah is, 00:05:11.189 --> 00:05:13.189 if only he would pray during the night!' " 00:05:13.189 --> 00:05:15.189 No sooner had he heard that 00:05:15.189 --> 00:05:17.189 than he resolved 00:05:17.189 --> 00:05:19.189 never to sleep at night except a little. 00:05:19.189 --> 00:05:21.189 And so it was that 00:05:21.189 --> 00:05:23.189 when people laid their sides down 00:05:23.189 --> 00:05:25.189 upon their beds, he would pray 00:05:25.189 --> 00:05:27.189 as much as Allah willed him to pray, 00:05:27.189 --> 00:05:29.189 then he would retire to bed 00:05:29.189 --> 00:05:31.189 and doze briefly like a bird, 00:05:31.189 --> 00:05:33.189 then rise, perform ablution, 00:05:33.189 --> 00:05:35.189 and pray, 00:05:35.189 --> 00:05:37.189 and then doze briefly like a bird. 00:05:37.189 --> 00:05:39.189 He would do that throughout the night 00:05:39.189 --> 00:05:41.189 four or five times. 00:05:41.189 --> 00:05:43.220 Indeed, 00:05:43.220 --> 00:05:45.220 the noble Companions testified to 'Abdullah 00:05:45.220 --> 00:05:47.220 Ibn 'Umar's profound righteousness, 00:05:47.220 --> 00:05:49.220 and the youth of the 'Umari lineage validated their testimony 00:05:49.220 --> 00:05:51.220 concerning him and fulfilled it 00:05:51.220 --> 00:05:53.220 through his deeds. 00:05:53.220 --> 00:05:55.220 It was narrated from Jabir that he said: 00:05:55.220 --> 00:05:57.220 "There is none among us 00:05:57.220 --> 00:05:59.220 who lived to see the worldly life 00:05:59.220 --> 00:06:01.220 but that it swayed him and he swayed toward it, 00:06:01.220 --> 00:06:03.220 except for 'Abdullah Ibn 'Umar." 00:06:03.220 --> 00:06:05.480 When 'Umar 00:06:05.480 --> 00:06:07.480 Ibn al-Khattab, may the pleasure of Allah 00:06:07.480 --> 00:06:09.480 be upon him, joined the Highest Companion, 00:06:09.480 --> 00:06:11.480 and the caliphate passed to the Possessor of the Two Lights, 00:06:11.480 --> 00:06:13.480 'Uthman Ibn 'Affan, 00:06:13.480 --> 00:06:15.480 he wished to entrust the office of judgeship 00:06:15.480 --> 00:06:17.480 to 'Abdullah Ibn 'Umar. 00:06:17.480 --> 00:06:19.480 He said to him: "Judge between 00:06:19.480 --> 00:06:21.480 the people, O 'Abdullah, 00:06:21.480 --> 00:06:23.480 for you are among the most knowledgeable of Muslims 00:06:23.480 --> 00:06:25.480 in the religion of Allah, and the most prolific among them 00:06:25.480 --> 00:06:27.480 in narrating the hadith of the Messenger of Allah, 00:06:27.480 --> 00:06:29.480 peace be upon him." 00:06:29.480 --> 00:06:31.480 But he adamantly 00:06:31.480 --> 00:06:33.480 refused, saying: 00:06:33.480 --> 00:06:35.480 "I will not judge between two people, 00:06:35.480 --> 00:06:37.480 nor will I lead two people in prayer." 00:06:37.480 --> 00:06:39.480 'Uthman said: "Your father 00:06:39.480 --> 00:06:41.480 used to judge between the people while the Messenger, 00:06:41.480 --> 00:06:43.480 peace be upon him, was alive; 00:06:43.480 --> 00:06:45.480 so what prevents you?" 00:06:45.480 --> 00:06:47.480 He replied: 00:06:47.480 --> 00:06:49.480 "My father used to judge, 00:06:49.480 --> 00:06:51.480 and whenever an issue perplexed him, 00:06:51.480 --> 00:06:53.480 he would ask the Prophet, peace be upon him; 00:06:53.480 --> 00:06:55.480 and whenever 00:06:55.480 --> 00:06:57.480 an issue perplexed the Prophet, peace be upon him, 00:06:57.480 --> 00:06:59.480 he would ask Gabriel, 00:06:59.480 --> 00:07:01.480 peace be upon him; 00:07:01.480 --> 00:07:03.480 but I find no one 00:07:03.480 --> 00:07:05.480 whom I can ask." Then he said to him: 00:07:05.480 --> 00:07:07.480 "Have you not heard the Prophet, peace 00:07:07.480 --> 00:07:09.480 be upon him, say: 00:07:09.480 --> 00:07:11.480 'Whoever seeks refuge in Allah 00:07:11.480 --> 00:07:13.480 has indeed sought refuge with a true protector,' 00:07:13.480 --> 00:07:15.480 meaning he has turned to an ultimate sanctuary 00:07:15.480 --> 00:07:17.480 and sought refuge in a true haven?" 00:07:17.480 --> 00:07:19.480 He replied, "Indeed, 00:07:19.480 --> 00:07:21.480 I heard it." 00:07:21.480 --> 00:07:23.480 Then he said, "I seek refuge in Allah 00:07:23.480 --> 00:07:25.480 from your appointing me as a judge." 00:07:25.480 --> 00:07:27.480 So 'Uthman exempted him 00:07:27.480 --> 00:07:29.480 from that, and said to him, 00:07:29.480 --> 00:07:31.480 "Do not inform anyone of this, 00:07:31.480 --> 00:07:33.480 for the Muslims 00:07:33.480 --> 00:07:35.480 are in need of someone to judge among them 00:07:35.480 --> 00:07:37.579 with justice." 00:07:37.579 --> 00:07:39.579 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar was not 00:07:39.579 --> 00:07:41.579 merely a devout worshipper and an ascetic; 00:07:41.579 --> 00:07:43.579 rather, he was alongside that 00:07:43.579 --> 00:07:45.579 a courageous warrior. 00:07:45.579 --> 00:07:47.579 He campaigned with the Muslim armies 00:07:47.579 --> 00:07:49.579 in the Levant, Iraq, 00:07:49.579 --> 00:07:51.579 Basra, and Persia, 00:07:51.579 --> 00:07:53.579 and took part alongside 'Amr ibn al-'As 00:07:53.579 --> 00:07:55.579 in the conquest of Egypt. 00:07:55.579 --> 00:07:57.579 He resided there for a considerable time, 00:07:57.579 --> 00:07:59.579 and hadiths were narrated from him 00:07:59.579 --> 00:08:01.579 by more than forty of its people. 00:08:01.579 --> 00:08:03.699 And when the fitnah 00:08:03.699 --> 00:08:05.699 erupted between 'Ali ibn Abi Talib 00:08:05.699 --> 00:08:07.699 and Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan, 00:08:07.699 --> 00:08:09.699 may Allah be pleased with them both, 00:08:09.699 --> 00:08:11.699 some people began searching 00:08:11.699 --> 00:08:13.699 for someone other than the two of them for the caliphate. 00:08:13.699 --> 00:08:15.699 A delegation 00:08:15.699 --> 00:08:17.699 of influential leaders and decision-makers went 00:08:17.699 --> 00:08:19.699 to 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar and said, 00:08:19.699 --> 00:08:21.699 "Give us your hand so that we may pledge allegiance to you, 00:08:21.699 --> 00:08:23.699 for you are the master of the Arabs 00:08:23.699 --> 00:08:25.699 and the son of their master, 00:08:25.699 --> 00:08:27.699 and the best of people, and the son of the best of people." 00:08:27.699 --> 00:08:29.699 But he said, 00:08:29.699 --> 00:08:31.699 "I am not the best of people; 00:08:31.699 --> 00:08:33.700 rather, I am just a servant among the servants of Allah, 00:08:33.700 --> 00:08:35.700 hoping in Allah and fearing Him. 00:08:35.700 --> 00:08:37.700 By Allah, you will never cease 00:08:37.700 --> 00:08:39.700 excessively praising a man until 00:08:39.700 --> 00:08:41.700 you ruin him! 00:08:41.700 --> 00:08:43.769 And if you pledge allegiance to me, 00:08:43.769 --> 00:08:45.769 what then 00:08:45.769 --> 00:08:47.769 shall I do with the people of the East?" 00:08:47.769 --> 00:08:49.769 They said, "They will pledge allegiance to you, 00:08:49.769 --> 00:08:51.769 or else you fight them until they submit 00:08:51.769 --> 00:08:53.769 in allegiance to you." 00:08:53.769 --> 00:08:55.769 He replied, "By Allah, 00:08:55.769 --> 00:08:57.769 I would not want the caliphate to yield 00:08:57.769 --> 00:08:59.769 to me for seventy years, 00:08:59.769 --> 00:09:01.769 if because of me there were killed 00:09:01.769 --> 00:09:03.960 even a single Muslim man." 00:09:03.960 --> 00:09:05.960 The heart of 'Abdullah 00:09:05.960 --> 00:09:07.960 ibn 'Umar remained throughout his life 00:09:07.960 --> 00:09:09.960 deeply attached to the Messenger of Allah, 00:09:09.960 --> 00:09:11.960 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:09:11.960 --> 00:09:13.960 He would be guided by his guidance, 00:09:13.960 --> 00:09:15.960 follow his actions, 00:09:15.960 --> 00:09:17.960 tread his paths, 00:09:17.960 --> 00:09:19.960 memorize whatever he heard from him, 00:09:19.960 --> 00:09:21.960 and hold fast to it with his molar teeth. 00:09:21.960 --> 00:09:23.960 The Messenger, 00:09:23.960 --> 00:09:25.960 peace be upon him, 00:09:25.960 --> 00:09:27.960 was never mentioned in his presence 00:09:27.960 --> 00:09:30.059 without him weeping bitterly over his parting. 00:09:30.059 --> 00:09:32.059 In addition to that, he was 00:09:32.059 --> 00:09:34.059 possessed of immense fear of Allah, 00:09:34.059 --> 00:09:36.059 and his eyes would overflow 00:09:36.059 --> 00:09:38.059 with tears at the recitation of the Qur'an. 00:09:38.059 --> 00:09:40.059 Never did he recite the words of the Exalted: 00:09:40.059 --> 00:09:42.059 "Has the time not come 00:09:42.059 --> 00:09:44.059 “Is not the time ripe for the hearts of those who believe to submit to Allah's reminder and to the truth which is revealed, that they become not as those who received the scripture of old but the term was prolonged for them and so their hearts were hardened, and many of them are evil-livers.” (57:16) 00:09:44.059 --> 00:09:46.059 for their hearts to humble at the remembrance of Allah..." 00:09:46.059 --> 00:09:48.059 except that weeping completely overcame him. 00:09:48.059 --> 00:09:50.120 On one occasion, 00:09:50.120 --> 00:09:52.120 'Ubaydullah 00:09:52.120 --> 00:09:54.120 ibn 'Umayr recited before him, 00:09:54.120 --> 00:09:56.120 and he wept profusely, shedding tears 00:09:57.120 --> 00:09:59.120 until his garments were soaked, 00:09:59.120 --> 00:10:01.120 and his sobbing almost tore 00:10:01.120 --> 00:10:03.120 the strings of his heart. 00:10:03.120 --> 00:10:05.120 A man was present in the gathering 00:10:05.120 --> 00:10:07.120 who felt such pity for him that he was about 00:10:07.120 --> 00:10:09.120 to step up to the reciter 00:10:09.120 --> 00:10:11.120 and say to him, "Stop, 00:10:11.120 --> 00:10:13.120 for you have caused distress to the elder!" 00:10:13.120 --> 00:10:15.340 Many 00:10:15.340 --> 00:10:17.340 seekers of knowledge used to write 00:10:17.340 --> 00:10:19.340 to him, wishing 00:10:19.340 --> 00:10:21.340 that he provide them with his sincere counsel 00:10:21.340 --> 00:10:23.379 and precious guidance. 00:10:23.379 --> 00:10:25.379 He would answer their requests 00:10:25.379 --> 00:10:27.379 with enduring words 00:10:27.379 --> 00:10:29.440 that stand the test of time. 00:10:29.440 --> 00:10:31.440 Among these was that one of them 00:10:31.440 --> 00:10:33.440 sent a letter to him, saying, 00:10:33.440 --> 00:10:35.440 "Write to me, O Abu 'Abd 00:10:35.440 --> 00:10:37.440 al-Rahman, the sum of the entire religion." 00:10:37.440 --> 00:10:39.440 So he wrote back to him, saying, 00:10:39.440 --> 00:10:41.440 "Indeed, knowledge is vast; 00:10:41.440 --> 00:10:43.440 but if you are able 00:10:43.440 --> 00:10:45.440 to meet Allah with your back light 00:10:45.440 --> 00:10:47.440 of the blood of Muslims, 00:10:47.440 --> 00:10:49.440 your stomach empty of their wealth, 00:10:49.440 --> 00:10:51.440 restraining your tongue from 00:10:51.440 --> 00:10:53.440 their honors, and adhering to their community, 00:10:54.440 --> 00:10:56.629 then do so." 00:10:56.629 --> 00:10:58.629 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar made it 00:10:58.629 --> 00:11:00.629 his constant practice to feed others 00:11:00.629 --> 00:11:02.629 and to show benevolence to the poor 00:11:02.629 --> 00:11:04.629 and orphans, to the extent that 00:11:04.629 --> 00:11:06.629 numerous accounts were narrated about him in this regard, 00:11:06.629 --> 00:11:08.629 and there were recorded 00:11:08.629 --> 00:11:10.629 abundant traditions concerning him. 00:11:10.629 --> 00:11:12.629 Among them is that 00:11:12.629 --> 00:11:14.629 he once craved 00:11:14.629 --> 00:11:16.629 a fish, so his wife 00:11:16.629 --> 00:11:18.629 Safiyyah searched for a fish 00:11:18.629 --> 00:11:20.629 until she found one. 00:11:20.629 --> 00:11:22.629 Then she prepared it exquisitely 00:11:22.629 --> 00:11:24.629 and brought it before him. 00:11:24.629 --> 00:11:26.629 Just then, he heard the call 00:11:26.629 --> 00:11:28.629 of a poor beggar at the door, 00:11:28.629 --> 00:11:30.629 so he said, "Give 00:11:30.629 --> 00:11:32.629 the fish to him." 00:11:32.629 --> 00:11:34.629 Safiyyah said, "I adjure you 00:11:34.629 --> 00:11:36.629 by Allah to strengthen yourself 00:11:36.629 --> 00:11:38.629 with some of it!" 00:11:38.629 --> 00:11:40.629 But he insisted, "Give it 00:11:40.629 --> 00:11:42.629 to him." She then said, 00:11:42.629 --> 00:11:44.629 "We will satisfy him with something else instead." 00:11:44.629 --> 00:11:46.629 She went and said to the beggar, 00:11:46.629 --> 00:11:48.629 "He had craved this 00:11:48.629 --> 00:11:50.629 fish." The beggar replied, 00:11:50.629 --> 00:11:52.629 "By Allah, I crave it as well." 00:11:52.629 --> 00:11:54.629 So she bought it back from him 00:11:54.629 --> 00:11:56.659 for a dinar, thus satisfying him, 00:11:56.659 --> 00:11:58.659 and then said to her husband, 00:11:58.659 --> 00:12:00.659 "We have satisfied the beggar 00:12:00.659 --> 00:12:02.659 and given him a generous gift." 00:12:02.659 --> 00:12:04.700 Ibn 'Umar asked the man, 00:12:04.700 --> 00:12:06.700 "Did they satisfy you, are you pleased, 00:12:06.700 --> 00:12:08.700 and did you receive the price?" 00:12:08.700 --> 00:12:10.700 He replied, "Yes." 00:12:10.700 --> 00:12:12.700 So he turned to his family and said, 00:12:12.700 --> 00:12:14.700 "Now, give it 00:12:14.700 --> 00:12:17.019 to him!" 00:12:17.019 --> 00:12:19.019 His wife was once reproached regarding his emaciation, 00:12:19.019 --> 00:12:21.019 and it was said to her, 00:12:21.019 --> 00:12:23.019 "Will you not show gentleness to this elder?" 00:12:23.019 --> 00:12:25.019 She replied, "What can I do 00:12:25.019 --> 00:12:27.019 with him? By Allah, 00:12:27.019 --> 00:12:29.019 whenever I prepare food for him, 00:12:29.019 --> 00:12:31.019 he invites others to eat it with him." 00:12:31.019 --> 00:12:33.019 So she sent word to the poor 00:12:33.019 --> 00:12:35.019 who used to sit along his path 00:12:35.019 --> 00:12:37.019 whenever he left the mosque, 00:12:37.019 --> 00:12:39.019 fed them, 00:12:39.019 --> 00:12:41.019 and said to them, "Do not sit 00:12:41.019 --> 00:12:43.049 in his path." 00:12:43.049 --> 00:12:45.049 When he came home, he said, 00:12:45.049 --> 00:12:47.049 "Send food to such-and-such poor people." 00:12:47.049 --> 00:12:49.049 She replied, 00:12:49.049 --> 00:12:51.049 "We have already sent them 00:12:51.049 --> 00:12:53.049 what you desire, and even more than you desire." 00:12:53.049 --> 00:12:55.049 He said, 00:12:55.049 --> 00:12:57.049 "Rather, you only intended 00:12:57.049 --> 00:12:59.049 that I should have no dinner tonight!" 00:12:59.049 --> 00:13:01.049 Then he got up and did not eat 00:13:01.049 --> 00:13:03.299 a thing. 00:13:03.299 --> 00:13:05.299 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar, 00:13:05.299 --> 00:13:07.299 alongside all of that, 00:13:07.299 --> 00:13:09.299 used to draw close to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, 00:13:09.299 --> 00:13:11.299 through every possible means; 00:13:11.299 --> 00:13:13.299 whenever his soul fancied anything 00:13:13.299 --> 00:13:15.299 of wealth or possessions, he would give it away. 00:13:16.399 --> 00:13:18.399 His enslaved servants came to know this, 00:13:18.399 --> 00:13:20.399 so they began to use it as a stratagem 00:13:20.399 --> 00:13:22.399 with him; whenever 00:13:22.399 --> 00:13:24.399 one of them longed for emancipation, 00:13:24.399 --> 00:13:26.399 he would roll up his sleeves in worship 00:13:26.399 --> 00:13:28.399 and dedicate himself to the mosque. 00:13:28.399 --> 00:13:30.399 Whenever he saw him in that state, 00:13:30.399 --> 00:13:32.399 he was pleased with it from him 00:13:32.399 --> 00:13:34.399 and would set him free. 00:13:34.399 --> 00:13:36.399 His companions would say to him, 00:13:36.399 --> 00:13:38.399 "O Abu 'Abd al-Rahman, 00:13:38.399 --> 00:13:40.399 they only wish to deceive you 00:13:40.399 --> 00:13:42.399 with this worship of theirs!" 00:13:42.399 --> 00:13:44.399 But he would reply, "Whoever deceives us 00:13:44.399 --> 00:13:46.659 by Allah, we allow ourselves to be deceived for His sake." 00:13:46.659 --> 00:13:48.659 Moreover, he would frequently 00:13:48.659 --> 00:13:50.659 not merely stop 00:13:50.659 --> 00:13:52.659 at freeing the slave, 00:13:52.659 --> 00:13:54.659 but would bestow upon him ample wealth 00:13:54.659 --> 00:13:56.659 to facilitate for him the means of a decent 00:13:56.659 --> 00:13:58.659 and comfortable life. 00:13:58.659 --> 00:14:00.659 An example of this is what 'Abdullah ibn Dinar reported, 00:14:00.659 --> 00:14:02.659 He narrated, 00:14:02.659 --> 00:14:04.659 "I set out with 'Abdullah Ibn 'Umar 00:14:04.659 --> 00:14:06.659 toward Makkah, intending to perform 'Umrah. 00:14:06.659 --> 00:14:08.659 We stopped to rest along the way, 00:14:08.659 --> 00:14:10.659 when there came down toward us 00:14:10.659 --> 00:14:12.659 a shepherd from the mountain. 00:14:12.659 --> 00:14:14.659 Ibn 'Umar wanted to test him, 00:14:14.659 --> 00:14:16.659 so he asked, 'Are you an enslaved shepherd?' 00:14:16.659 --> 00:14:18.659 He replied, 'Yes.' 00:14:18.659 --> 00:14:20.659 Ibn 'Umar said, 'Sell me a sheep 00:14:20.659 --> 00:14:22.659 from the flock, 00:14:22.659 --> 00:14:24.659 and if your master asks you about it, 00:14:24.659 --> 00:14:26.750 tell him that a wolf ate it.' 00:14:26.750 --> 00:14:28.750 The shepherd responded, 'Then where is Allah, 00:14:28.750 --> 00:14:30.909 the Mighty and Majestic?' 00:14:30.909 --> 00:14:32.909 Thereupon, 'Abdullah Ibn 'Umar wept 00:14:32.909 --> 00:14:34.909 and said, 'Indeed, 00:14:34.909 --> 00:14:36.909 where is Allah, the Mighty and Majestic?'" 00:14:36.940 --> 00:14:38.940 Later, he sent for the shepherd and bought him 00:14:38.940 --> 00:14:40.940 from his owner, 00:14:40.940 --> 00:14:42.940 along with the flock he had been tending, 00:14:42.940 --> 00:14:45.100 and set him free. 00:14:45.100 --> 00:14:47.100 Last but not least, 00:14:47.100 --> 00:14:49.100 'Abdullah Ibn 'Umar was 00:14:49.100 --> 00:14:51.100 extraordinarily generous, never holding back 00:14:51.100 --> 00:14:53.139 his wealth. 00:14:53.139 --> 00:14:55.139 On one occasion, he was brought twenty-some 00:14:55.139 --> 00:14:57.139 thousand dirhams, 00:14:57.139 --> 00:14:59.139 and he did not rise from his gathering until 00:14:59.139 --> 00:15:01.139 he had spent every last bit of it in the cause of Allah. 00:15:01.139 --> 00:15:03.139 What is more, 00:15:03.139 --> 00:15:05.139 a beggar then came to him 00:15:05.139 --> 00:15:07.139 when he had nothing left, 00:15:07.139 --> 00:15:09.139 so he borrowed an amount from someone 00:15:09.139 --> 00:15:11.139 and handed it to the beggar. 00:15:11.139 --> 00:15:13.230 Furthermore, 00:15:13.230 --> 00:15:15.230 'Abdullah Ibn 'Umar lived 00:15:15.230 --> 00:15:17.230 until he was well over 00:15:17.230 --> 00:15:19.230 eighty years of age. 00:15:19.230 --> 00:15:21.230 When certainty (death) approached him, 00:15:21.230 --> 00:15:23.230 he said to some of his companions, 00:15:23.230 --> 00:15:25.259 "I do not grieve over anything 00:15:25.259 --> 00:15:27.259 in this worldly life except for three: 00:15:27.259 --> 00:15:29.259 the thirst of mid-day fasts, 00:15:29.259 --> 00:15:31.259 the struggle of standing in nightly prayer, 00:15:31.259 --> 00:15:33.259 and that I did not fight 00:15:33.259 --> 00:15:35.519 the rebellious faction." 00:15:35.519 --> 00:15:37.519 May Allah be pleased with this Companion, 00:15:37.519 --> 00:15:39.519 may Allah be pleased with the illustrious 'Abdullah Ibn 'Umar 00:15:39.519 --> 00:15:41.519 Ibn al-Khattab. 00:15:41.519 --> 00:15:43.519 He lived righteous and devout, 00:15:43.519 --> 00:15:45.519 and died as an ascetic worshipper. 00:15:45.519 --> 00:15:50.750 Even as a youth, 00:15:50.750 --> 00:15:52.750 'Abdullah Ibn 'Umar was 00:15:52.750 --> 00:15:54.750 deeply attached at heart to the mosques.
