Stop. Get to know the Companions, the scholars, and the most exalted among them. A new challenge: Who am I? I am one of the Companions from the Muhajirun and one of the first to embrace Islam. I am ten years older than the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him. I held a position of great status with him, peace be upon him. I migrated to Medina. The Prophet, peace be upon him, appointed me as the leader of sixty riders from the Muhajirun. He bestowed upon me a banner. It was the first banner ever raised in Islam. We encountered two hundred men from Quraysh. Led by Abu Sufyan Ibn Harb. At the mountain pass of al-Mirah. We exchanged arrows without engaging in sword combat. That was the first military engagement to take place in Islam. Then I participated in the Battle of Badr. At the beginning of the battle, Utbah Ibn Rabi'ah stepped forward. Followed by his son al-Walid and his brother Shaybah. Utbah called out, saying, "Who will duel?" Some young men from the Ansar went out to face him. He asked, "Who are you?" They replied, "We are from the Ansar." He said, "We have no need of you." "We only seek our cousins." The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: "Rise, Hamzah." "Rise, Ali." And he gestured to me and said, "Rise." Hamzah approached Utbah and killed him. Ali approached al-Walid and killed him. As for me, I dueled Shaybah Ibn Rabi'ah. We exchanged blows for a while. Then each of us struck the other. Shaybah struck me in my leg. I fell to the ground. Hamzah and Ali rushed at Shaybah and killed him. They carried me to the Muslim camp at al-Yaramraq. I then passed away at al-Safra'. And there I was buried. During the last ten days of Ramadan. So, who am I? The best of generations in their stances and examples. They followed the Messenger whenever he strove or spoke. They were here, watering our lives like clouds. They passed away, yet their memory remains exalted among us. They departed and left a question in the conscience: Is there any star like them that has risen and shone? They filled life with glories through their deeds. And the world of the Ummah flourished because of them.
