It is not lawful for you forcibly to inherit the women (of your deceased kinsmen), nor (that) ye should put constraint upon them that ye may take away a part of that which ye have given them, unless they be guilty of flagrant lewdness. But consort with them in kindness, for if ye hate them it may happen that ye hate a thing wherein Allah hath placed much good.” (4:19) 00:00:16.320 --> 00:00:22.929 The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) returned to Medina, 00:00:22.929 --> 00:00:28.359 and Abu Basir, a man from Quraysh who was a Muslim, came to him. 00:00:28.359 --> 00:00:30.960 So they sent two men in pursuit of him, 00:00:30.960 --> 00:00:34.759 saying, "Honor the treaty you made with us." 00:00:34.759 --> 00:00:39.789 The Prophet (peace be upon him) handed Abu Basir over to the two men, 00:00:39.789 --> 00:00:43.789 for he (peace be upon him) would never break a covenant. 00:00:43.789 --> 00:00:47.859 So they set out with Abu Basir until they reached Dhul-Hulayfah, 00:00:47.859 --> 00:00:50.859 where they stopped to eat some of their dates. 00:00:50.859 --> 00:00:53.859 Abu Basir said to one of the two men, 00:00:53.859 --> 00:00:58.859 "By Allah, O so-and-so, I surely see that sword of yours is exceptionally sharp." 00:00:58.859 --> 00:01:00.859 The man unsheathed it and said, 00:01:00.859 --> 00:01:03.859 "Yes, by Allah, indeed it is! 00:01:03.859 --> 00:01:08.859 I have tested it time and time again." 00:01:08.859 --> 00:01:12.859 Abu Basir said, "Let me look at it." 00:01:12.859 --> 00:01:16.859 So he handed it to him, and Abu Basir struck him with it until he died. 00:01:16.859 --> 00:01:19.859 The other man fled until he reached Medina, 00:01:19.859 --> 00:01:22.859 entering the mosque running. 00:01:22.859 --> 00:01:26.859 When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw him, he said, 00:01:26.859 --> 00:01:29.859 "This man has seen something frightening." 00:01:29.859 --> 00:01:32.859 When he reached the Prophet (peace be upon him), 00:01:32.859 --> 00:01:35.859 he said, "By Allah, my companion has been killed, 00:01:35.859 --> 00:01:37.859 and I am as good as dead!" 00:01:37.859 --> 00:01:40.859 Then Abu Basir arrived carrying the sword 00:01:40.859 --> 00:01:43.859 and said, "O Prophet of Allah, 00:01:43.859 --> 00:01:46.859 by Allah, Allah has fulfilled your covenant. 00:01:46.859 --> 00:01:50.859 You returned me to them, and then Allah saved me from them." 00:01:50.859 --> 00:01:53.859 The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, 00:01:53.859 --> 00:01:55.859 "What a stirrer of war he would be, [if only he had men with him]!" 00:01:55.859 --> 00:01:57.859 When he heard that, 00:01:57.859 --> 00:02:00.859 he realized that he would return him to them, 00:02:00.859 --> 00:02:04.859 so he left Medina until he reached the seashore. 00:02:04.859 --> 00:02:07.859 Then Abu Jandal escaped a second time 00:02:07.859 --> 00:02:11.860 and joined Abu Basir at the seashore. 00:02:11.860 --> 00:02:15.860 Thereafter, no man from Quraysh embraced Islam and left 00:02:15.860 --> 00:02:17.860 except that he joined Abu Basir, 00:02:17.860 --> 00:02:20.860 until a band of them gathered together. 00:02:20.860 --> 00:02:22.860 By Allah, whenever they heard of a caravan 00:02:22.860 --> 00:02:25.860 belonging to Quraysh setting out for the Levant, 00:02:25.860 --> 00:02:29.860 they intercepted it, killed them, and took their wealth. 00:02:29.860 --> 00:02:33.860 So Quraysh sent a message to the Prophet (peace be upon him), 00:02:33.860 --> 00:02:35.860 beseeching him by Allah and the ties of kinship 00:02:35.860 --> 00:02:38.860 that whoever came to him would be safe. 00:02:38.860 --> 00:02:41.860 So the Messenger (peace be upon him) sent word to them 00:02:41.860 --> 00:02:43.860 indicating his agreement. 00:02:43.860 --> 00:02:45.860 Allah Almighty says: 00:02:45.860 --> 00:02:51.860 “And He it is Who hath withheld men's hands from you, and hath withheld your hands from them, in the valley of Mecca, after He had made you victors over them. Allah is Seer of what ye do.” (48:24) 00:02:51.860 --> 00:02:54.860 ﴿in the valley of Mecca,﴾ 00:02:54.860 --> 00:02:58.860 ﴿in the valley of Mecca after He gave you victory over them. 00:08:55.299 --> 00:08:57.299 the Dawn prayer at Al-Hudaybiyyah 00:08:57.299 --> 00:09:00.299 following rainfall that had fallen during the night. 00:09:00.299 --> 00:09:04.330 When he finished, he turned to the people and said: 00:09:04.330 --> 00:09:07.330 'Do you know what your Lord has said?' 00:09:07.330 --> 00:09:11.330 They said, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' 00:09:11.330 --> 00:09:14.330 He said, 'Allah said: 00:09:14.330 --> 00:09:17.330 "This morning, some of My servants became believers in Me and others disbelievers. 00:09:17.330 --> 00:09:19.419 As for the one who said, 00:09:19.419 --> 00:09:22.419 'We have received rain by the grace and mercy of Allah,' 00:09:22.419 --> 00:09:26.419 that one is a believer in Me and a disbeliever in the stars. 00:09:26.419 --> 00:09:28.419 But as for the one who said, 00:09:28.419 --> 00:09:31.419 'We have received rain by such-and-such a star system,' 00:09:31.419 --> 00:09:35.419 that one is a disbeliever in Me and a believer in the stars."' 00:09:35.419 --> 00:09:38.419 Because he attributed the coming of rain to something 00:09:38.419 --> 00:09:40.419 that is not a cause at all, 00:09:40.419 --> 00:09:42.419 which is the star. 00:09:42.419 --> 00:09:44.419 For the entire matter belongs to Allah. 00:09:44.419 --> 00:09:46.419 The scholars distinguish 00:09:46.419 --> 00:09:49.419 between saying "We received rain by such-and-such a star" 00:09:49.419 --> 00:09:52.419 and saying "We received rain during such-and-such a star system." 00:09:52.419 --> 00:09:54.419 If one says, 00:09:54.419 --> 00:09:56.419 "We received rain by such-and-such a star," 00:09:56.419 --> 00:09:58.419 using the particle *bi-* to denote causality, 00:09:58.419 --> 00:10:01.419 then this is shirk (associating partners with Allah)—Allah forbid! 00:10:01.419 --> 00:10:03.419 As for when one says, 00:10:03.419 --> 00:10:05.419 "We received rain during such-and-such a star system," 00:10:05.419 --> 00:10:07.419 this is not shirk, 00:10:07.419 --> 00:10:11.419 provided he means that we received rain during that star system 00:10:11.419 --> 00:10:13.419 in a temporal sense— 00:10:13.419 --> 00:10:17.419 meaning at the time when that specific star was in a certain position, 00:10:17.419 --> 00:10:19.419 rain fell. 00:10:19.419 --> 00:10:21.460 This is permissible and there is no harm in it. 00:10:21.460 --> 00:10:23.460 Thus, there are three cases here: 00:10:23.460 --> 00:10:25.460 First: 00:10:25.460 --> 00:10:28.460 If he believes that the star itself sent down the rain, 00:10:28.460 --> 00:10:31.460 then this is major shirk. 00:10:31.460 --> 00:10:32.460 Second: 00:10:32.460 --> 00:10:36.460 If he believes that the star is a cause for the rain to fall, 00:10:36.460 --> 00:10:38.460 then this is minor shirk, 00:10:38.460 --> 00:10:42.460 because a cause must be established either by Islamic law or by natural observation, 00:10:42.460 --> 00:10:44.460 and here it Quraysh detained him with them. 00:14:46.220 --> 00:14:51.220 A rumor reached the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and the Muslims 00:14:51.220 --> 00:14:54.220 that 'Uthman had been killed. 00:14:54.220 --> 00:14:56.220 This was a plausible matter, 00:14:56.220 --> 00:14:58.220 because there was fighting between them, 00:14:58.220 --> 00:15:01.220 [as seen in] Badr, Uhud, and the Trench. 00:15:01.220 --> 00:15:04.220 The Messenger had come with a large number, 00:15:04.220 --> 00:15:07.220 and the Quraysh were prepared for battle, 00:15:07.220 --> 00:15:10.220 and they did not fear Allah, the Blessed and Exalted. 00:15:10.220 --> 00:15:14.220 Thus, it was not unlikely that such people 00:15:14.220 --> 00:15:18.220 would have the audacity to kill 'Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him. 00:15:18.220 --> 00:15:20.220 Ibn Ishaq said: 00:15:20.220 --> 00:15:23.220 "Abdullah Ibn Abi Bakr narrated to me, 00:15:24.220 --> 00:15:28.220 saying: 'When it reached him that 'Uthman had take our pledge to die, 00:15:52.309 --> 00:15:56.309 but he took our pledge that we would not flee." 00:15:56.309 --> 00:15:59.379 Some of the Companions mentioned that this pledge 00:15:59.379 --> 00:16:02.379 was a pledge to die in the way of Allah, 00:16:02.379 --> 00:16:06.379 and some mentioned that he took their pledge that they would not flee. 00:16:06.379 --> 00:16:08.379 Both are intertwined, 00:16:08.379 --> 00:16:12.379 because whoever does not flee is exposing himself to death. 00:16:12.379 --> 00:16:16.379 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, took the pledge from the people, 00:16:16.379 --> 00:16:20.379 and not a single Muslim who was present held back, 00:16:20.379 --> 00:16:24.379 except for one man, who was Jadd Ibn Qays, 00:16:24.379 --> 00:16:26.379 of the Banu Salamah. 00:16:26.379 --> 00:16:31.379 It has been authentically reported from the Prophet, peace be upon him, that he said: 00:16:31.379 --> 00:16:35.379 "No one who pledged under the tree shall enter the Fire, 00:16:35.379 --> 00:16:37.379 except for the owner of the red camel." 00:16:37.379 --> 00:16:41.379 The owner of the red camel is Jadd Ibn Qays. 00:16:41.379 --> 00:16:45.379 The Prophet, peace be upon him, took the pledge of the Companions 00:16:45.379 --> 00:16:47.379 on this great day, 00:16:47.379 --> 00:16:51.379 and he pledged on behalf of 'Uthman with his own hand, peace be upon him, 00:16:51.379 --> 00:16:55.379 saying, "This is for 'Uthman." 00:16:55.379 --> 00:16:57.379 So he pledged on his behalf. 00:16:57.379 --> 00:17:02.379 His hand for 'Uthman was more honorable than 'Uthman's own hand for himself. 00:17:02.379 --> 00:17:05.380 After that was the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, 00:17:05.380 --> 00:17:07.380 and 'Uthman returned.
