He will emerge from 00:02:20.849 --> 00:02:22.849 your land, from the Sacred Sanctuary, 00:02:22.849 --> 00:02:24.849 and he will migrate to a land of black volcanic stones, 00:02:24.849 --> 00:02:26.849 date palms, and salty marshland 00:02:26.849 --> 00:02:28.849 that oozes water. 00:02:28.849 --> 00:02:30.849 So beware of letting anyone precede you to him, 00:02:30.849 --> 00:02:32.849 young man!' 00:02:32.849 --> 00:02:34.849 Talhah said: "His words struck 00:02:34.849 --> 00:02:36.849 deeply into my heart, 00:02:36.849 --> 00:02:38.849 so I hastened to my riding beasts and saddled them, 00:02:38.849 --> 00:02:40.849 leaving the caravan behind me, 00:02:40.849 --> 00:02:42.849 and I sped swiftly, 00:02:42.849 --> 00:02:44.849 racing toward Mecca. 00:02:44.849 --> 00:02:46.849 When I reached it, I said 00:02:46.849 --> 00:02:48.849 to my family: 'Did anything new happen 00:02:48.849 --> 00:02:50.849 in Mecca after our departure?' 00:02:50.849 --> 00:02:52.849 They said: 'Yes. Muhammad ibn 'Abdullah has risen up, 00:02:52.849 --> 00:02:54.849 claiming to be a prophet, 00:02:54.849 --> 00:02:56.849 and Ibn Abi 00:02:56.849 --> 00:02:58.849 Quhafah has followed him'—meaning 00:02:58.849 --> 00:03:00.849 Abu Bakr. Talhah said: 00:03:00.849 --> 00:03:02.849 'Now, I knew Abu Bakr well; 00:03:02.849 --> 00:03:04.849 he was an easygoing, 00:03:04.849 --> 00:03:06.849 beloved man of gentle disposition, 00:03:06.849 --> 00:03:08.849 welcoming and approachable. He was 00:03:08.849 --> 00:03:10.849 an upright merchant of noble character, 00:03:10.849 --> 00:03:12.849 and we were fond of his company and loved 00:03:12.849 --> 00:03:14.849 his gatherings because of his vast knowledge of the traditions of Quraysh 00:03:14.849 --> 00:03:16.849 and his mastery of their genealogies.' 00:03:16.849 --> 00:03:18.849 So I went to him 00:03:18.849 --> 00:03:20.849 and said to him: 'Is it true 00:03:20.849 --> 00:03:22.849 what is being said—that Muhammad ibn 'Abdullah 00:03:22.849 --> 00:03:24.849 has declared prophethood, 00:03:24.849 --> 00:03:26.849 and that you have followed him?' 00:03:26.849 --> 00:03:28.849 He said: 'Yes,' 00:03:28.849 --> 00:03:30.849 and he began recounting his story to me 00:03:30.849 --> 00:03:32.849 and 00:03:50.849 --> 00:03:52.849 recited the Qur'an to me, 00:03:52.849 --> 00:03:54.849 and gave me glad tidings of the good of this world and the Hereafter. 00:03:54.849 --> 00:03:56.849 Thereupon, Allah opened my heart to Islam, 00:03:56.849 --> 00:03:58.849 and I recounted to him the story 00:03:58.849 --> 00:04:00.849 of the monk of Busra, 00:04:00.849 --> 00:04:02.849 and he was delighted by it with a joy 00:04:02.849 --> 00:04:04.849 that shone visibly upon his face. 00:04:04.849 --> 00:04:06.849 Then I proclaimed before him the testimony 00:04:06.849 --> 00:04:08.849 that there is no god but Allah, 00:04:08.849 --> 00:04:10.849 and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. 00:04:10.849 --> 00:04:12.849 Thus, I was the fourth of three men 00:04:12.849 --> 00:04:14.849 who embraced Islam at the hands of Abu Bakr." 00:04:14.849 --> 00:04:16.850 The conversion to Islam 00:04:16.850 --> 00:04:18.850 of this young Qurayshite struck his family and kinsfolk 00:04:18.850 --> 00:04:20.850 like a thunderbolt. 00:04:20.850 --> 00:04:22.850 The most distressed among them over his acceptance of Islam 00:04:22.850 --> 00:04:24.850 was his mother, 00:04:24.850 --> 00:04:26.850 for she had hoped that he would become the chieftain of his people 00:04:26.850 --> 00:04:28.850 on account of his noble 00:04:28.850 --> 00:04:30.850 characteristics and magnificent qualities. 00:04:30.850 --> 00:04:32.850 His people rushed to him 00:04:32.850 --> 00:04:34.850 to dissuade him from his religion, 00:04:34.850 --> 00:04:36.850 but they found him as firm as an unshakeable 00:04:36.850 --> 00:04:38.850 mountain. 00:04:38.850 --> 00:04:40.850 When they despaired of persuading him 00:04:40.850 --> 00:04:42.850 by gentle means, 00:04:42.850 --> 00:04:44.850 they resorted to torturing and tormenting him. 00:04:44.850 --> 00:04:46.850 Mas'ud ibn Kharash narrated, 00:04:46.850 --> 00:04:48.850 saying: 00:04:48.850 --> 00:04:50.850 "While I was performing sa'y between al-Safa and al-Marwah, 00:04:50.850 --> 00:04:52.850 behold, a large crowd of people appeared, 00:04:52.850 --> 00:04:54.850 trailing behind a young man whose hands had been tied 00:04:54.850 --> 00:04:56.850 firmly to his neck. 00:04:56.850 --> 00:04:58.850 They were jogging behind him, 00:04:58.850 --> 00:05:00.850 shoving him in the back 00:05:00.850 --> 00:05:02.850 and striking him on the head, 00:05:02.850 --> 00:05:04.850 while an old woman followed behind him, reviling him and screaming at him. 00:05:04.850 --> 00:05:06.850 I asked: 00:05:06.850 --> 00:05:08.850 'What is the matter with this youth?' 00:05:08.850 --> 00:05:10.850 They replied: 'This is Talhah 00:05:10.850 --> 00:05:12.850 ibn 'Ubayd Allah; 00:05:12.850 --> 00:05:14.850 he has abandoned his religion and followed the Banu Hashim.' 00:05:15.850 --> 00:05:17.850 I asked: 00:05:17.850 --> 00:05:19.850 'And who is this old woman behind him?' 00:05:19.850 --> 00:05:21.850 They said: 00:05:21.850 --> 00:05:23.850 'She is al-Sa'bah bint al-Hadrami, 00:05:23.850 --> 00:05:26.040 the youth's mother.' 00:05:26.040 --> 00:05:28.040 Later, Nawfal ibn Khuwaylid, 00:05:28.040 --> 00:05:30.040 who was nicknamed the Lion of Quraysh, 00:05:30.040 --> 00:05:32.040 went up to Talhah ibn 'Ubayd Allah 00:05:32.040 --> 00:05:34.040 and bound him with a rope, 00:05:34.040 --> 00:05:36.040 tying Abu Bakr 00:05:36.040 --> 00:05:37.040 al-Siddiq alongside him. 00:05:37.040 --> 00:05:39.040 He bound the two of them together 00:05:39.040 --> 00:05:41.040 and handed them over to the foolish ruffians of Mecca 00:05:41.040 --> 00:05:43.040 so that they might inflict the severest torment upon them. 00:05:43.040 --> 00:05:45.040 For this reason, Talhah ibn 'Ubayd Allah 00:05:45.040 --> 00:05:47.040 and Abu Bakr al-Siddiq were called 00:05:47.040 --> 00:05:49.040 'the Two Bound Companions' (al-Qarinan). 00:05:49.100 --> 00:05:51.100 Then days passed, 00:05:51.100 --> 00:05:53.100 and events followed in rapid succession, 00:05:53.100 --> 00:05:55.100 while Talhah ibn 'Ubayd Allah 00:05:55.100 --> 00:05:57.100 grew ever more noble and steadfast with each passing day. 00:05:57.100 --> 00:05:59.100 His valiant deeds in the cause 00:05:59.100 --> 00:06:01.100 of Allah and His Messenger grew greater 00:06:01.100 --> 00:06:03.100 and more magnificent, 00:06:03.100 --> 00:06:05.100 and his devotion to Islam and the Muslims 00:06:05.100 --> 00:06:07.100 deepened and expanded, until 00:06:07.100 --> 00:06:09.100 the Muslims bestowed upon him the title 'the Living 00:06:09.100 --> 00:06:11.100 Martyr,' and 00:06:11.100 --> 00:06:13.100 the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, called him 00:06:13.100 --> 00:06:15.100 'Talhah of Goodness,' 00:06:15.100 --> 00:06:17.100 'Talhah of Generosity,' 00:06:17.100 --> 00:06:19.230 and 'Talhah of Bountiful Giving.' 00:06:19.230 --> 00:06:21.230 Behind each of these titles lies a story 00:06:21.230 --> 00:06:23.230 no less splendid than the others. 00:06:23.230 --> 00:06:25.230 As for the story of his being named 00:06:25.230 --> 00:06:27.230 'the Living Martyr,' 00:06:27.230 --> 00:06:29.230 it took place on the Day of Uhud, 00:06:29.230 --> 00:06:31.230 when the Muslims were routed away from the Messenger of Allah, 00:06:31.230 --> 00:06:33.230 peace be upon him, 00:06:33.230 --> 00:06:35.230 and none remained with him except eleven 00:06:35.230 --> 00:06:37.230 men from the Ansar 00:06:37.230 --> 00:06:39.230 and Talhah ibn 'Ubayd Allah from the Emigrants. 00:06:39.230 --> 00:06:41.230 The Prophet, peace be upon him, 00:06:41.230 --> 00:06:43.230 was ascending the mountain 00:06:43.230 --> 00:06:45.230 with those who were with him, 00:06:45.230 --> 00:06:47.230 when a band of the idolaters caught up with him, 00:06:47.230 --> 00:06:49.230 seeking to kill him. 00:06:49.230 --> 00:06:51.230 Thereupon, he, peace be upon him, said: 00:06:51.230 --> 00:06:53.230 'Who will repel these men from us, 00:06:53.230 --> 00:06:55.230 and he shall be my companion in Paradise?' 00:06:55.230 --> 00:06:57.230 Talhah said: 00:06:57.230 --> 00:06:59.230 'I will, O Messenger of Allah!' 00:06:59.230 --> 00:07:01.230 But he, peace be upon him, said: 00:07:01.230 --> 00:07:03.389 'No, stay where you are.' 00:07:03.389 --> 00:07:05.389 A man from the Ansar then said: 00:07:05.389 --> 00:07:07.389 'I will, O Messenger of Allah!' 00:07:07.389 --> 00:07:09.389 "Yes, you." 00:07:09.389 --> 00:07:11.389 So the Ansari fought until he was killed. 00:07:11.389 --> 00:07:13.389 Then the Messenger, 00:07:13.389 --> 00:07:15.389 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, climbed further with those who were with him, 00:07:15.389 --> 00:07:17.389 and the polytheists caught up with him again. 00:07:17.389 --> 00:07:19.389 He said, "Who will take on 00:07:19.389 --> 00:07:21.389 these attackers?" 00:07:21.389 --> 00:07:23.389 Talhah said, "I will, O Messenger of Allah!" 00:07:23.389 --> 00:07:25.389 But he, peace be upon him, said, 00:07:25.389 --> 00:07:27.389 "No, stay where you are." 00:07:27.389 --> 00:07:29.389 Then a man 00:07:29.389 --> 00:07:31.389 from the Ansar said, "I will, O Messenger of Allah." 00:07:31.389 --> 00:07:33.389 He said, "Yes, you." 00:07:33.389 --> 00:07:35.389 He then fought 00:07:35.389 --> 00:07:37.389 until he was killed as well. 00:07:37.389 --> 00:07:39.389 The Messenger continued his ascent, 00:07:39.389 --> 00:07:41.389 and the polytheists caught up with him again. 00:07:41.389 --> 00:07:43.389 He kept repeating the same call, 00:07:43.389 --> 00:07:45.389 and Talhah kept saying, "I will, O 00:07:45.389 --> 00:07:47.389 Messenger of Allah!" but the Prophet held him back, 00:07:47.389 --> 00:07:49.389 granting permission instead to a man 00:07:49.389 --> 00:07:51.389 from the Ansar, until they were all martyred, 00:07:51.389 --> 00:07:53.389 every single one of them, and none remained 00:07:53.389 --> 00:07:55.389 with him except Talhah. 00:07:55.389 --> 00:07:57.389 The polytheists caught up with him, 00:07:57.389 --> 00:07:59.389 so he said to Talhah, "Now, 00:07:59.389 --> 00:08:01.389 yes." And indeed, 00:08:01.389 --> 00:08:03.389 the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, had already 00:08:03.389 --> 00:08:05.389 had his incisor broken, his forehead gashed, 00:08:05.389 --> 00:08:07.389 his lip split, 00:08:07.389 --> 00:08:09.389 blood streaming down his face, 00:08:09.389 --> 00:08:11.389 and severe exhaustion overcoming him. 00:08:11.389 --> 00:08:13.389 Talhah began repeatedly charging at the polytheists 00:08:13.389 --> 00:08:15.389 to drive them away from 00:08:15.389 --> 00:08:17.389 the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:08:17.389 --> 00:08:19.389 Then he would return to the Prophet, 00:08:19.389 --> 00:08:21.389 help him climb a little higher 00:08:21.389 --> 00:08:23.389 up the mountain, support him safely 00:08:23.389 --> 00:08:25.389 on the ground, and then charge at 00:08:25.389 --> 00:08:27.389 the polytheists anew. 00:08:27.389 --> 00:08:29.389 He continued doing so until he repelled 00:08:29.389 --> 00:08:31.389 them from him. 00:08:31.389 --> 00:08:33.389 Abu Bakr said: "Abu 'Ubaydah Ibn al-Jarrah and I 00:08:33.389 --> 00:08:35.389 were 00:08:35.389 --> 00:08:37.389 far away from the Messenger of Allah. 00:08:37.389 --> 00:08:39.389 When we reached him wanting to 00:08:39.389 --> 00:08:41.389 tend to him, he said, 00:08:41.389 --> 00:08:43.389 'Leave me and attend to your companion!'— 00:08:43.389 --> 00:08:45.389 meaning Talhah." 00:08:45.389 --> 00:08:47.389 There was Talhah, bleeding profusely, 00:08:47.389 --> 00:08:49.389 bearing over seventy 00:08:49.389 --> 00:08:51.389 wounds from a sword-strike, a thrust 00:08:51.389 --> 00:08:53.389 of a spear, or a shot from an arrow, 00:08:53.389 --> 00:08:55.389 with his hand severed, 00:08:55.389 --> 00:08:57.389 and having fallen into a pit, 00:08:57.389 --> 00:08:59.460 completely unconscious. 00:08:59.460 --> 00:09:01.460 The Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:09:01.460 --> 00:09:03.460 used to say thereafter: 00:09:03.460 --> 00:09:05.460 "Whoever would be pleased to look upon a man 00:09:05.460 --> 00:09:07.460 walking upon the earth who has fulfilled 00:09:07.460 --> 00:09:09.460 his vow of martyrdom, let him look at 00:09:09.460 --> 00:09:11.460 Talhah Ibn 'Ubaydillah." 00:09:11.460 --> 00:09:13.460 And whenever the Battle of Uhud was mentioned, Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, 00:09:13.460 --> 00:09:15.460 would say: 00:09:15.460 --> 00:09:17.460 "That was an entire day 00:09:17.460 --> 00:09:19.519 that belonged to Talhah." 00:09:19.519 --> 00:09:21.519 This is the story of how Talhah 00:09:21.519 --> 00:09:23.519 Ibn 'Ubaydillah was called "The Living Martyr." 00:09:23.519 --> 00:09:25.519 As for his titles "Talhah 00:09:25.519 --> 00:09:27.519 the Good" and "Talhah the Generous," 00:09:27.519 --> 00:09:29.519 there are countless stories to tell. 00:09:29.519 --> 00:09:31.519 Among them 00:09:31.519 --> 00:09:33.519 is that Talhah was a merchant with vast 00:09:33.519 --> 00:09:35.519 commerce and immense wealth. 00:09:35.519 --> 00:09:37.519 One day, wealth came to him 00:09:37.519 --> 00:09:39.519 from Hadramawt, 00:09:39.519 --> 00:09:41.519 amounting to seven hundred thousand dirhams. 00:09:41.519 --> 00:09:43.549 He spent the entire night filled with dread, 00:09:43.549 --> 00:09:45.549 anxious and deeply distressed. 00:09:45.549 --> 00:09:47.549 His wife came in to see him— 00:09:47.549 --> 00:09:49.549 Umm Kulthum, daughter of Abu Bakr 00:09:49.549 --> 00:09:51.549 al-Siddiq—and asked, 00:09:51.549 --> 00:09:53.549 "What troubles you, O Abu Muhammad? 00:09:53.549 --> 00:09:55.549 Perhaps you have seen something amiss in us?" 00:09:55.549 --> 00:09:57.549 He replied, "No, 00:09:57.549 --> 00:09:59.549 and what an excellent wife to a Muslim man you are! 00:09:59.549 --> 00:10:01.549 Rather, 00:10:01.549 --> 00:10:03.549 I have been reflecting throughout the night, saying to myself: 00:10:03.549 --> 00:10:05.549 'What must a man's expectation 00:10:05.549 --> 00:10:07.549 of his Lord be if he sleeps 00:10:07.549 --> 00:10:09.649 while having all this wealth in his house?'" 00:10:09.649 --> 00:10:11.649 She said, "What makes you so distressed 00:10:11.649 --> 00:10:13.649 about it? What of 00:10:13.649 --> 00:10:15.649 the needy among your people and your 00:10:15.649 --> 00:10:17.649 close companions? When morning comes, 00:10:17.649 --> 00:10:19.649 distribute it among them." 00:10:19.649 --> 00:10:21.649 He said, "May Allah have mercy on you! 00:10:21.649 --> 00:10:23.649 Truly, you are divinely guided." 00:10:24.649 --> 00:10:26.649 When morning broke, 00:10:26.649 --> 00:10:28.649 he placed the wealth into pouches and bowls, 00:10:28.649 --> 00:10:30.649 and distributed it among the poor 00:10:30.649 --> 00:10:32.649 of the Muhajirun and the Ansar. 00:10:32.649 --> 00:10:34.840 It is also related 00:10:34.840 --> 00:10:36.840 that a man came to Talhah 00:10:36.840 --> 00:10:38.840 Ibn 'Ubaydillah asking for financial aid, 00:10:38.840 --> 00:10:40.840 mentioning a kinship that bound him 00:10:40.840 --> 00:10:42.840 to him. Talhah said, 00:10:42.840 --> 00:10:44.840 "This is a kinship that 00:10:44.840 --> 00:10:46.840 no one has ever mentioned to me before. 00:10:46.840 --> 00:10:48.840 I own a piece of land 00:10:48.840 --> 00:10:50.840 for which 'Uthman Ibn 'Affan offered me 00:10:50.840 --> 00:10:52.840 three hundred thousand dirhams. 00:10:52.840 --> 00:10:54.840 If you wish, take the land; 00:10:54.840 --> 00:10:56.840 or if you wish, I will sell it on your behalf to him 00:10:56.840 --> 00:10:58.840 for three hundred thousand and give you 00:10:58.840 --> 00:11:00.840 the price."
