00:00:56.460 the call of truth, 00:00:56.460 --> 00:01:00.460 those whose hearts Allah had opened to faith came forward to accept him, 00:01:00.460 --> 00:01:04.459 while those whose hearts Allah had sealed with disbelief and disobedience turned away from him. 00:01:04.459 --> 00:01:09.650 Among those whose hearts Allah had opened to His upright religion 00:01:09.650 --> 00:01:12.650 and guided to His straight path 00:01:12.650 --> 00:01:14.650 was a young man in the full vigor of his youth, 00:01:14.650 --> 00:01:16.650 robust in stature, 00:01:16.650 --> 00:01:19.650 handsome in appearance, soft-spoken, 00:01:19.650 --> 00:01:21.650 enjoying abundant blessings and living a life of luxury, 00:01:21.650 --> 00:01:24.900 named Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr. 00:01:24.900 --> 00:01:29.900 One day, this fresh young man made his way to the house of Al-Arqam ibn Abi al-Arqam, 00:01:29.900 --> 00:01:32.900 fragrance wafting from his sleeves, 00:01:32.900 --> 00:01:34.900 affluence evident on his face, 00:01:34.900 --> 00:01:40.900 and his precious garment attesting to the vast wealth in which he lived. 00:01:40.900 --> 00:01:44.939 The gentle, refined youth knocked lightly on the door, 00:01:44.939 --> 00:01:46.939 and it was opened for him. 00:01:46.939 --> 00:01:49.939 He entered the house shyly, 00:01:49.939 --> 00:01:52.939 greeted the people with warmth and affability, 00:01:52.939 --> 00:01:55.939 and then sat down where the assembly ended. 00:01:55.939 --> 00:01:58.969 The people's eyes fixed upon him, 00:01:58.969 --> 00:02:00.969 unable to believe what they were seeing; 00:02:00.969 --> 00:02:06.969 for how often had they wished that Allah would guide this young man and his peers to what He had guided them to, 00:02:06.969 --> 00:02:10.969 spare this radiant youth the punishment of the grave, 00:02:10.969 --> 00:02:13.969 and protect him from the fierce heat of Hellfire. 00:02:13.969 --> 00:02:18.969 The Noble Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, set about warning and giving glad tidings; 00:02:18.969 --> 00:02:20.969 whenever he issued a warning, 00:02:20.969 --> 00:02:24.969 the hearts of his Companions were almost torn apart by the horror and blazes of the Fire, 00:02:24.969 --> 00:02:26.969 and whenever he gave glad tidings, 00:02:26.969 --> 00:02:30.969 their hearts soared with joy over Paradise and its eternal delights. 00:02:30.969 --> 00:02:35.099 The noble Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:02:35.099 --> 00:02:41.099 would recite to his Companions from time to time some of Allah's clear verses, 00:02:41.099 --> 00:02:43.099 wherewith their hearts found happiness, 00:02:43.099 --> 00:02:46.099 their souls attained tranquility, 00:02:46.099 --> 00:02:51.099 and they would ask Allah for the triumph of Paradise's bliss and salvation from the torment of the Fire. 00:02:52.099 --> 00:02:57.099 No sooner had the Noble Messenger, peace be upon him, finished his exhortation 00:02:57.099 --> 00:03:00.099 than the Qurayshite youth rose toward him unhurriedly, 00:03:00.099 --> 00:03:04.099 drew near him gently, and said: 00:03:04.099 --> 00:03:07.099 "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, 00:03:07.099 --> 00:03:10.099 and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." 00:03:10.099 --> 00:03:15.099 Then he extended his hand to the Supreme Prophet, peace be upon him, 00:03:15.099 --> 00:03:19.099 and pledged allegiance to him to hear and obey in times of ease and hardship. 00:03:19.099 --> 00:03:22.349 The youth concealed the news of his conversion from the people, 00:03:22.349 --> 00:03:28.349 for he did not wish to distress his mother—who was devotedly fond of him—with the news of his abandoning her religion, 00:03:28.349 --> 00:03:34.349 knowing full well her severe stubbornness and the extent of her persistence in disbelief. 00:03:34.349 --> 00:03:38.349 Nor did he want Quraysh to find out about his acceptance of Islam, 00:03:38.349 --> 00:03:45.349 knowing their determination to inflict harm on anyone who entertained the thought of renouncing their gods, 00:03:45.349 --> 00:03:50.349 especially when it concerned a youth like him, who stood at the pinnacle of their nobility 00:03:50.349 --> 00:03:53.349 and belonged to the most opulent of their elite. 00:03:53.349 --> 00:03:59.349 The youth continued to frequent the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, in secret, 00:03:59.349 --> 00:04:03.349 finding joy in meeting him and drawing deep inspiration from his exhortations, 00:04:03.349 --> 00:04:07.349 until 'Uthman ibn Talhah saw him praying one day 00:04:07.349 --> 00:04:10.349 and spread the news among the people. 00:04:10.349 --> 00:04:14.479 From that day, the ordeal of Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr began. 00:04:15.479 --> 00:04:17.480 His parents disowned him 00:04:17.480 --> 00:04:22.480 after failing to return him to the religion of his forefathers, 00:04:22.480 --> 00:04:24.480 and they cut off their financial support from him, 00:04:24.480 --> 00:04:27.480 until he became poorer than the poorest 00:04:27.480 --> 00:04:30.480 and plunged into misery more severe than that of the destitute. 00:04:30.480 --> 00:04:32.480 Quraysh confronted him, 00:04:32.480 --> 00:04:35.480 imprisoning him for a long period, 00:04:35.480 --> 00:04:38.480 mistreating him, and persisting relentlessly in his oppression. 00:04:38.480 --> 00:04:43.480 They thought that by doing so they could turn him away from his religion, 00:04:43.480 --> 00:04:46.509 but how could they achieve that 00:04:46.509 --> 00:04:49.509 when the youth had already tasted the sweetness of faith? 00:04:49.509 --> 00:04:52.509 When the Muslims migrated to Abyssinia 00:04:52.509 --> 00:04:54.509 to escape the harm of Quraysh, 00:04:54.509 --> 00:04:58.509 the Qurayshite youth was among the ranks of the emigrants. 00:04:58.509 --> 00:05:01.509 Mus'ab fled with his religion to Abyssinia, 00:05:01.509 --> 00:05:04.509 leaving behind the playgrounds of his childhood, 00:05:04.509 --> 00:05:07.509 the haunts of his youth, and his noble lineage, 00:05:07.509 --> 00:05:10.509 exchanging all of that 00:05:10.509 --> 00:05:14.509 for a distant home, the loneliness of exile, and the hardship of poverty. 00:05:14.509 --> 00:05:19.509 Yet all of that was trivial and light to him 00:05:19.509 --> 00:05:24.509 compared to seeking the pleasure of Allah and the pleasure of His Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:05:24.509 --> 00:05:28.639 When Mus'ab returned from his first migration, 00:05:28.639 --> 00:05:30.639 people did not recognize him, 00:05:30.639 --> 00:05:32.639 to the point that they could barely identify him. 00:05:32.639 --> 00:05:34.639 For the handsome, radiant youth 00:05:34.639 --> 00:05:36.639 had been touched by severe hardship: 00:05:36.639 --> 00:05:38.639 his clothes were now tattered 00:05:38.639 --> 00:05:40.639 after having been vibrant and fine, 00:05:40.639 --> 00:05:42.639 his skin had turned rough 00:05:42.639 --> 00:05:44.639 after having been soft and tender, 00:05:44.639 --> 00:05:46.639 and his face had grown emaciated 00:05:46.639 --> 00:05:49.639 after having been smooth and luminous. 00:05:49.639 --> 00:05:54.829 The Noble Messenger, peace be upon him, saw him approaching, 00:05:54.829 --> 00:05:57.829 wearing a worn-out ram's skin 00:05:57.829 --> 00:05:59.829 wrapped around his waist, 00:05:59.829 --> 00:06:01.829 and he said to his Companions: 00:06:01.829 --> 00:06:05.829 "Look at this youth whose heart Allah has illuminated. 00:06:05.829 --> 00:06:11.829 I saw him between parents who fed him the finest food and drink, 00:06:11.829 --> 00:06:16.019 but the love of Allah and His Messenger called him to what you see." 00:06:16.019 --> 00:06:20.019 Then the earth constrained the Muslims once again, 00:06:20.019 --> 00:06:24.019 and they suffered harm from Quraysh beyond their endurance, 00:06:24.019 --> 00:06:28.019 so they migrated to Abyssinia in their second migration, 00:06:28.019 --> 00:06:32.019 and Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr was also among the emigrants. 00:06:32.019 --> 00:06:38.019 However, Mus'ab could not bear being separated from the noble Prophet, peace be upon him, 00:06:38.019 --> 00:06:46.019 preferring to return to Makkah and endure the persecution of Quraysh over being away from the Prophet, peace be upon him. 00:06:46.019 --> 00:06:52.019 Mus'ab attached himself to the Prophet, peace be upon him, like a shadow to its master, 00:06:52.019 --> 00:06:56.019 drinking deeply of his guidance as Allah willed, 00:06:56.019 --> 00:07:00.019 until he became one of the noble Companions who had memorized the Book of Allah best, 00:07:00.019 --> 00:07:06.019 possessed the deepest understanding of Allah's law, and had gathered the most of the hadith of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him. 00:07:06.019 --> 00:07:10.180 Then the first Pledge of 'Aqabah took place, 00:07:10.180 --> 00:07:14.180 and the righteous pledgers returned to their people in Madinah, 00:07:14.180 --> 00:07:18.310 calling them to the religion of guidance and truth. 00:07:18.310 --> 00:07:22.310 Soon, however, they felt they needed an emissary 00:07:22.310 --> 00:07:24.310 who was more knowledgeable than them in the Book and the Sunnah, 00:07:24.310 --> 00:07:28.310 and better versed in the teachings of Islam. 00:07:28.310 --> 00:07:32.310 So they sent word asking the Noble Messenger, peace be upon him, 00:07:32.310 --> 00:07:36.310 to send them a man to teach them their religion. 00:07:36.310 --> 00:07:40.310 He sent Mus'ab to them, may Allah be pleased with him, 00:07:40.310 --> 00:07:44.310 who thus became the first emissary of Islam on the face of the earth. 00:07:44.310 --> 00:07:47.500 Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr settled in Madinah 00:07:47.500 --> 00:07:51.500 and began calling the people to Islam and instructing them in its rulings. 00:07:51.500 --> 00:07:55.500 Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr was tireless and unceasing, 00:07:55.500 --> 00:07:57.500 energetic and relentless, 00:07:57.500 --> 00:08:00.500 and many people embraced Islam at his hands, 00:08:00.500 --> 00:08:05.500 until there remained no household in Yathrib without a Muslim man or woman, 00:08:05.500 --> 00:08:09.500 and he was even granted the honor of leading the very first Friday prayer in Madinah 00:08:09.500 --> 00:08:14.500 before the Noble Messenger, peace be upon him, arrived there. 00:08:14.500 --> 00:08:17.500 When the Hajj season arrived, 00:08:17.500 --> 00:08:22.540 Mus'ab set out for Makkah accompanied by seventy Muslim men, 00:08:22.540 --> 00:08:26.540 and they met the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, at 'Aqabah, 00:08:26.540 --> 00:08:29.540 pledging to him their famous pledge. 00:08:29.540 --> 00:08:32.539 The righteous pledgers then returned to their homes, 00:08:32.539 --> 00:08:37.539 while Mus'ab remained with his Prophet, peace be upon him, 00:08:37.539 --> 00:08:41.539 until Allah granted permission to the Muslims to migrate to Madinah, 00:08:41.539 --> 00:08:46.539 whereupon he and 'Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum were the very first emigrants. 00:08:46.539 --> 00:08:50.539 When the Messenger, peace be upon him, resolved 00:08:50.539 --> 00:08:52.539 to battle Quraysh at Badr, 00:08:52.539 --> 00:08:55.539 he organized his battalions and marshaled his forces: 00:08:55.539 --> 00:08:59.539 he placed 'Ali ibn Abi Talib over the battalion of the Emigrants, 00:08:59.539 --> 00:09:03.539 Sa'd ibn Mu'adh over the battalion of the Ansar, 00:09:03.539 --> 00:09:07.539 Al-Zubayr ibn al-'Awwam on the right wing of the army, 00:09:07.539 --> 00:09:11.539 and Al-Miqdad al-Kindi on its left wing. 00:09:11.539 --> 00:09:15.539 As for the white banner of the Messenger, peace be upon him, 00:09:15.539 --> 00:09:18.539 he entrusted it to Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr, 00:09:18.539 --> 00:09:21.539 handing it to him with his own noble hands. 00:09:21.539 --> 00:09:24.539 Mus'ab received it with great honor, 00:09:24.539 --> 00:09:29.539 carrying it at the forefront of the army with his head held high and his brow radiant, 00:09:29.539 --> 00:09:33.539 defending it with the valor of true heroes. 00:09:33.539 --> 00:09:37.759 While Mus'ab was returning from Badr, 00:09:37.759 --> 00:09:41.759 he saw his brother, Abu 'Aziz, as a prisoner in the hands of one of the Ansar 00:09:41.759 --> 00:09:44.759 who was about to bind his hands. 00:09:44.759 --> 00:09:47.759 Mus'ab said to the Ansari: 00:09:47.759 --> 00:09:49.759 "Bind him tightly, 00:09:49.759 --> 00:09:51.759 for his mother is a woman of wealth, 00:09:51.759 --> 00:09:55.759 and she is likely to ransom him with a large sum." 00:09:55.759 --> 00:09:58.759 Abu 'Aziz said to his brother Mus'ab: 00:09:58.759 --> 00:10:01.759 "Is this your advice concerning your brother?" 00:10:01.759 --> 00:10:03.759 Mus'ab replied to him: 00:10:03.759 --> 00:10:06.759 "Rather, he is my brother instead of you; 00:10:06.759 --> 00:10:09.759 he is a Muslim, while you are a polytheist." 00:10:09.759 --> 00:10:10.759 On the day of Uhud, 00:10:10.759 --> 00:10:16.759 the Noble Messenger, peace be upon him, handed his banner to Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr 00:10:16.759 --> 00:10:18.759 just as he had done on the day of Badr. 00:10:19.759 --> 00:10:25.759 Mus'ab carried it and marched with it before the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him. 00:10:25.759 --> 00:10:28.759 The onslaught of Quraysh grew fierce against the Muslims, 00:10:28.759 --> 00:10:32.759 to the point that they broke ranks and scattered away from their standard. 00:10:32.759 --> 00:10:38.759 But Mus'ab stood his ground firmly beside his Prophet, peace be upon him, 00:10:38.759 --> 00:10:41.759 neither wavering nor faltering. 00:10:41.759 --> 00:10:43.759 At that moment, Ibn Qami'ah, 00:10:43.759 --> 00:10:46.759 one of the horsemen of the polytheists, charged at him 00:10:46.759 --> 00:10:48.759 and struck him with his sword, 00:10:48.759 --> 00:10:51.759 severing his hand, and the banner fell. 00:10:51.759 --> 00:10:53.759 Mus'ab grasped it with his other hand, 00:10:53.759 --> 00:10:57.759 whereupon the wretched horseman returned to the pious fighter 00:10:57.759 --> 00:11:00.759 and struck him swiftly a second time, 00:11:00.759 --> 00:11:02.759 severing his second hand, 00:11:02.759 --> 00:11:04.759 and the banner fell again. 00:11:04.759 --> 00:11:06.759 So he embraced it with his upper arms, 00:11:06.759 --> 00:11:08.759 pressing it to his chest 00:11:08.759 --> 00:11:10.759 to keep the banner raised high. 00:11:10.759 --> 00:11:14.759 Ibn Qami'ah charged a third time at Mus'ab 00:11:14.759 --> 00:11:16.759 and plunged his spear into his chest, 00:11:16.759 --> 00:11:18.759 causing him to fall to the ground. 00:11:18.759 --> 00:11:22.759 His brother, Abu al-Rum, then caught the banner and raised it, 00:11:22.759 --> 00:11:26.759 continuing to carry it until he brought it to Madinah. 00:11:26.759 --> 00:11:30.820 Quraysh departed from the battlefield victorious, 00:11:30.820 --> 00:11:34.820 and the Muslims returned to their martyrs to lay them to rest in the earth. 00:11:34.820 --> 00:11:39.820 There lay Mus'ab, fallen on his face, both hands severed. 00:11:39.820 --> 00:11:42.820 When the Muslims set out to bury the martyr, 00:11:42.820 --> 00:11:46.820 they found nothing to shroud him with except a small garment: 00:11:46.820 --> 00:11:49.820 if they covered his face, his feet were exposed, 00:11:49.820 --> 00:11:52.820 and if they covered his feet, his face was exposed. 00:11:52.820 --> 00:11:56.950 So the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, ordered 00:11:56.950 --> 00:11:59.950 that his face be covered with the garment, 00:11:59.950 --> 00:12:02.950 and that his feet be covered with wild sweet rush grass. 00:12:02.950 --> 00:12:06.950 Then he stood over him and recited the words of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime: 00:12:12.950 --> 00:12:18.950 "Among the believers are men who have been true to what they pledged to Allah. Some of them have fulfilled their vow..." 00:12:18.950 --> 00:12:25.950 “Of the believers are men who are true to that which they covenanted with Allah. Some of them have paid their vow by death (in battle), and some of them still are waiting; and they have not altered in the least;” (33:23) 00:12:25.950 --> 00:12:35.899 Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr: the first emissary of Islam on the face of the earth. 00:12:35.899 --> 00:12:42.309 Through Muḥammad and his Companions, the lofty fortress has been firmly established. 00:12:42.309 --> 00:12:47.309 O poetry, assist me!
