00:00:00.460 --> 00:00:08.580
Stories of the Prophets... Stories of the Prophets, peace be upon them.

00:00:23.219 --> 00:00:28.339
The story of Moses, peace be upon him.

00:00:29.339 --> 00:00:33.329
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

00:00:34.490 --> 00:00:36.490
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds.

00:00:37.490 --> 00:00:39.490
May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad,

00:00:40.490 --> 00:00:42.490
and upon all his family and Companions.

00:00:43.490 --> 00:00:44.490
To proceed:

00:00:45.780 --> 00:00:47.780
The story of the tyrant Pharaoh came to an end

00:00:48.780 --> 00:00:49.780
with his drowning in the sea,

00:00:50.780 --> 00:00:52.780
along with the destruction of his soldiers who obeyed him.

00:00:53.780 --> 00:00:55.780
Thus ended his oppressive reign,

00:00:56.780 --> 00:00:59.780
in which he brought ruin upon both people and land.

00:01:00.780 --> 00:01:02.780
For every oppressor has an inevitable end;

00:01:03.780 --> 00:01:05.780
Allah grants respite, but He never neglects.

00:01:06.840 --> 00:01:09.840
His destruction took place before the very eyes of the Children of Israel,

00:01:10.840 --> 00:01:11.840
so that it would serve as an admonition for them,

00:01:12.840 --> 00:01:15.840
and that they might witness the power of Allah, Glorified and Exalted,

00:01:16.840 --> 00:01:17.840
and place their full trust in Him.

00:01:20.180 --> 00:01:24.180
After their deliverance from Pharaoh and his hosts, several events befell the Children of Israel,

00:01:25.180 --> 00:01:28.180
which are affirmed in the Noble Qur'an and the Prophetic Sunnah,

00:01:29.180 --> 00:01:31.180
and are worthy of deep reflection.

00:01:32.250 --> 00:01:34.250
Among those astonishing occurrences:

00:01:35.280 --> 00:01:38.280
after crossing the sea in which their enemy had drowned,

00:01:39.280 --> 00:01:42.280
while its sand was still clinging to their sandals,

00:01:43.280 --> 00:01:45.280
they passed by a people devoted to worshipping idols.

00:01:46.280 --> 00:01:48.280
What was truly expected of them

00:01:49.280 --> 00:01:50.280
was to despise what they witnessed

00:01:51.280 --> 00:01:53.280
and recoil from what they saw,

00:01:54.280 --> 00:01:55.280
for not much time had passed

00:01:56.280 --> 00:01:58.280
since they were being subjected to the worst torment

00:01:59.280 --> 00:02:02.280
under the idol worship of Pharaoh and his people,

00:02:02.280 --> 00:02:06.310
and because their deliverance from that humiliation and disgrace

00:02:07.310 --> 00:02:09.310
had come at the hands of their Prophet,

00:02:10.310 --> 00:02:13.310
who called them to the monotheism of Allah, Blessed and Exalted,

00:02:14.310 --> 00:02:16.310
so that He might increase them in His bounty.

00:02:17.310 --> 00:02:19.310
Yet the crooked nature of the Children of Israel

00:02:20.310 --> 00:02:21.310
never departed from them;

00:02:22.310 --> 00:02:24.310
faith had not firmly settled in their hearts,

00:02:25.310 --> 00:02:27.310
and the idol worship they had grown accustomed to

00:02:28.310 --> 00:02:29.310
during the days of Pharaoh's enslavement

00:02:29.310 --> 00:02:31.310
remained deeply entrenched within their souls

00:02:32.310 --> 00:02:34.310
and held sway over their minds.

00:02:35.310 --> 00:02:37.310
So they demanded of Moses, peace be upon him,

00:02:38.310 --> 00:02:40.310
that he make an idol for them to worship,

00:02:41.310 --> 00:02:43.310
just as those pagans were doing.

00:02:44.310 --> 00:02:46.310
In this manner, spiritual ailments infect souls

00:02:47.310 --> 00:02:48.310
just as physical illnesses afflict bodies.

00:02:49.310 --> 00:02:51.310
Such was the disposition of the Children of Israel:

00:02:52.310 --> 00:02:54.310
scarcely do they find guidance before they stray,

00:02:55.310 --> 00:02:57.310
scarcely do they rise before they degrade themselves,

00:02:57.310 --> 00:03:00.340
and scarcely do they tread the path of uprightness

00:03:01.340 --> 00:03:03.340
before they relapse and regress.

00:03:04.340 --> 00:03:06.340
In their words to Moses, peace be upon him,

00:03:08.460 --> 00:03:10.460
“And We brought the Children of Israel across the sea, and they came unto a people who were given up to idols which they had. They said: O Moses! Make for us a god even as they have gods. He said: Lo! ye are a folk who know not.” (7:138)

00:03:11.460 --> 00:03:12.460
phrased as an outright command,

00:03:13.460 --> 00:03:15.460
lies the greatest proof of their foolish minds

00:03:16.460 --> 00:03:17.460
and insolent manners.

00:03:18.460 --> 00:03:20.460
For had they merely asked his permission to adopt an idol

00:03:21.460 --> 00:03:22.460
to worship alongside others,

00:03:23.460 --> 00:03:25.460
their conduct would have been less astonishing;

00:03:26.460 --> 00:03:28.460
but what actually happened

00:03:29.460 --> 00:03:31.460
was that they demanded of him—their very Prophet,

00:03:32.460 --> 00:03:34.460
who called them to the monotheism of Allah Almighty

00:03:35.460 --> 00:03:38.460
and rescued them from their tyrannical pagan oppressor—

00:03:39.460 --> 00:03:43.460
to fashion an idol for them himself so that they could worship it!

00:03:44.460 --> 00:03:46.620
Thereupon, Moses, peace be upon him, became angry with them,

00:03:47.620 --> 00:03:48.620
with intense fury,

00:03:49.620 --> 00:03:52.620
for he was naturally fierce in defending the sake of his Lord and His religion.

00:03:52.620 --> 00:03:54.620
He answered them with a stern rebuke,

00:03:55.620 --> 00:03:58.620
censuring them and expressing astonishment at their demand,

00:03:59.620 --> 00:04:01.620
especially after all the miracles they had seen with their own eyes.

00:04:02.620 --> 00:04:03.620
He said:

00:04:04.620 --> 00:04:07.620
"Indeed, O Children of Israel, through this demand of yours,

00:04:08.620 --> 00:04:11.620
you have proved that you are a people whose hearts are filled with ignorance,

00:04:12.620 --> 00:04:14.620
and whose minds are utterly clouded,

00:04:15.620 --> 00:04:19.620
such that you no longer distinguish between the clear manifest error of these people

00:04:19.620 --> 00:04:23.620
and the submission and worship rightfully due to Allah alone."

00:04:24.620 --> 00:04:29.620
And he reminded them of Allah's favor upon them when He saved them from Pharaoh and his folk.

00:04:30.620 --> 00:04:31.779
Allah Almighty said:

00:04:32.779 --> 00:04:39.879
“And We brought the Children of Israel across the sea, and they came unto a people who were given up to idols which they had. They said: O Moses! Make for us a god even as they have gods. He said: Lo! ye are a folk who know not.” (7:138)

00:04:40.879 --> 00:04:46.879
“And We brought the Children of Israel across the sea, and they came unto a people who were given up to idols which they had. They said: O Moses! Make for us a god even as they have gods. He said: Lo! ye are a folk who know not.” (7:138)

00:04:47.879 --> 00:04:53.879
"They said, 'O Moses, make for us a god just as they have gods.'"

00:04:54.879 --> 00:04:59.879
“And We brought the Children of Israel across the sea, and they came unto a people who were given up to idols which they had. They said: O Moses! Make for us a god even as they have gods. He said: Lo! ye are a folk who know not.” (7:138)

00:05:00.879 --> 00:05:13.709
“Lo! as for these, their way will be destroyed and all that they are doing is in vain.” (7:139)

00:05:13.709 --> 00:05:23.220
“He said: Shall I seek for you a god other than Allah when He hath favoured you above (all) creatures?” (7:140)

00:05:23.220 --> 00:05:35.220
“And (remember) when We did deliver you from Pharaoh's folk who were afflicting you with dreadful torment, slaughtering your sons and sparing your women. That was a tremendous trial from your Lord.” (7:141)

00:05:36.220 --> 00:05:47.220
“And (remember) when We did deliver you from Pharaoh's folk who were afflicting you with dreadful torment, slaughtering your sons and sparing your women. That was a tremendous trial from your Lord.” (7:141)

00:05:47.220 --> 00:05:56.480
"And in that was a great trial from your Lord."

00:05:57.480 --> 00:06:02.019
The Children of Israel fell silent after the rebuke of Moses, peace be upon him,

00:06:03.019 --> 00:06:06.019
but their trials had not yet come to an end.

00:06:07.149 --> 00:06:13.149
For Allah had appointed a meeting with Moses, peace be upon him, and his people at Mount Sinai after thirty nights,

00:06:13.149 --> 00:06:16.149
which were the days of the month of Dhu al-Qi'dah,

00:06:17.149 --> 00:06:22.149
in order to give him the Torah, containing their rulings and the details of their law.

00:06:23.149 --> 00:06:26.220
Allah Almighty commanded Moses to fast these days

00:06:27.220 --> 00:06:29.220
and to devote them exclusively to worship.

00:06:30.220 --> 00:06:35.220
At that point, Moses appointed his brother Aaron as his deputy over the Children of Israel,

00:06:36.220 --> 00:06:40.220
saying to him, "Rectify their affairs by steering them toward obedience to Allah,

00:06:40.220 --> 00:06:45.220
and do not follow the way of those among them who disobey Allah, nor comply with their desires."

00:06:46.220 --> 00:06:48.220
This was a reminder and an admonition,

00:06:49.220 --> 00:06:51.220
for reminders benefit the believers;

00:06:52.220 --> 00:06:57.220
otherwise, Aaron, peace be upon him, was a noble prophet honored by Allah.

00:06:58.220 --> 00:07:02.279
Moses, peace be upon him, instructed him to lead them following his trail toward Mount Sinai.

00:07:03.279 --> 00:07:07.459
Then Moses hastened ahead to the appointed meeting with his Lord,

00:07:08.459 --> 00:07:13.459
engaging constantly in remembrance, worship, and fasting night and day.

00:07:14.459 --> 00:07:19.459
When he completed the thirty nights and the time of his rendezvous with Allah arrived,

00:07:20.459 --> 00:07:23.459
he disliked the odor of his mouth resulting from the fasting,

00:07:24.459 --> 00:07:26.459
so he brushed his teeth with the bark of a tree.

00:07:27.459 --> 00:07:28.459
Thereupon Allah revealed to him:

00:07:29.500 --> 00:07:34.500
"Did you not know, O Moses, that the breath of a fasting person is more beloved to Me than the fragrance of musk?"

00:07:35.500 --> 00:07:40.660
He then commanded him to fast another ten days, which were the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah.

00:07:41.720 --> 00:07:44.720
“And when We did appoint for Moses thirty nights (of solitude), and added to them ten, and he completed the whole time appointed by his Lord of forty nights; and Moses said unto his brother, Aaron: Take my place among the people. Do right, and follow not the way of mischief-makers.” (7:142)

00:07:45.750 --> 00:07:50.750
Allah Almighty's speaking to Moses, peace be upon him, took place on the morning of the Day of Sacrifice,

00:07:51.750 --> 00:07:53.750
the day Ishmael was ransomed from slaughter,

00:07:54.750 --> 00:07:58.750
and the religion was perfected for Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:08:01.000 --> 00:08:02.000
upon Mount Sinai.

00:08:02.000 --> 00:08:08.000
Allah spoke to Moses, peace be upon him, imparting to him His revelation, His commands, and His prohibitions,

00:08:09.000 --> 00:08:13.000
and He gave him the Tablets upon which the Torah was written,

00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:18.000
containing admonition and an elaboration of everything concerning the sacred law.

00:08:19.129 --> 00:08:22.129
At that moment, Moses relished the speech of Allah,

00:08:23.129 --> 00:08:25.129
and his soul yearned to behold his Lord;

00:08:26.129 --> 00:08:27.129
he longed for it ardently,

00:08:28.129 --> 00:08:29.129
and asked to look upon Him.

00:08:30.129 --> 00:08:31.129
So he said in utmost humility:

00:08:32.129 --> 00:08:34.129
"My Lord, show Yourself to me that I may look upon You."

00:08:35.320 --> 00:08:36.320
Allah said to him:

00:08:37.320 --> 00:08:38.320
"You shall not see Me,"

00:08:39.320 --> 00:08:41.320
meaning: you will not be able to bear seeing Me in this worldly life;

00:08:42.320 --> 00:08:44.320
“And when Moses came to Our appointed tryst and his Lord had spoken unto him, he said: My Lord! Show me (Thy Self), that I may gaze upon Thee. He said: Thou wilt not see Me, but gaze upon the mountain! If it stand still in its place, then thou wilt see Me. And when his Lord revealed (His) glory to the mountain He sent it crashing down. And Moses fell down senseless. And when he woke he said: Glory unto Thee! I turn unto Thee repentant, and I am the first of (true) believers.” (7:143)

00:08:45.320 --> 00:08:47.320
"but look upon the mountain; if it remains firm in its place when I manifest Myself to it,

00:08:48.320 --> 00:08:49.320
then you shall see Me."

00:08:50.320 --> 00:08:52.450

00:08:53.450 --> 00:08:56.450
He leveled it, crashing it flat to the ground.

00:08:57.669 --> 00:08:58.669
It was a mighty mountain,

00:08:58.669 --> 00:09:02.669
yet it could not stand firm before the magnificent splendors of Allah Almighty's light;

00:09:03.669 --> 00:09:04.669
it crumbled to dust and collapsed,

00:09:05.669 --> 00:09:07.669
turning into a shifting mound of sand.

00:09:08.669 --> 00:09:10.669
Moses fell down unconscious.

00:09:11.799 --> 00:09:13.799
When he recovered from his swoon, he said:

00:09:14.799 --> 00:09:18.799
"Exalted are You, my Lord, far above anything unbefitting Your majesty!

00:09:19.860 --> 00:09:22.860
I repent to You for this request of mine,

00:09:23.860 --> 00:09:25.860
and I am the first of the believers among my people."

00:09:25.860 --> 00:09:28.179
Allah Almighty said:

00:09:29.179 --> 00:09:33.470

00:09:34.470 --> 00:09:36.470
"And We completed them with ten,"

00:09:37.470 --> 00:09:39.470
"and We completed them with ten,"

00:09:40.470 --> 00:09:44.470

00:09:45.470 --> 00:09:48.470

00:09:49.470 --> 00:09:52.470

00:09:52.470 --> 00:09:57.470

00:09:58.470 --> 00:10:03.470

00:10:04.470 --> 00:10:06.470
"and his Lord spoke to him, he said,"

00:10:07.470 --> 00:10:10.470

00:10:11.470 --> 00:10:13.470
"He said, 'You shall not see Me,'"

00:10:14.470 --> 00:10:16.470

00:10:16.470 --> 00:10:23.470

00:10:24.470 --> 00:10:28.470

00:10:29.470 --> 00:10:31.470
"He made it collapse into dust,"

00:10:32.470 --> 00:10:37.470

00:10:38.470 --> 00:10:41.470
"And when he awoke, he said,"

00:10:42.470 --> 00:10:45.470

00:10:46.470 --> 00:10:48.470
"'the first of the believers.'"

00:10:50.340 --> 00:10:53.340
On the authority of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:

00:10:54.340 --> 00:10:55.340
Two men traded insults,

00:10:56.340 --> 00:10:59.340
one from among the Muslims and the other from the Jews.

00:11:00.340 --> 00:11:04.340
The Muslim said, "By the One Who chose Muhammad above all the worlds!"

00:11:05.340 --> 00:11:09.340
The Jew said, "By the One Who chose Moses above all the worlds!"

00:11:10.340 --> 00:11:13.340
The Muslim became angry with the Jew and slapped him.

00:11:13.340 --> 00:11:18.559
So the Jew went to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and informed him.

00:11:19.559 --> 00:11:23.559
The Messenger of Allah summoned him and said:

00:11:24.559 --> 00:11:26.559
"Do not claim superiority for me over Moses,

00:11:27.559 --> 00:11:29.559
for mankind will fall unconscious on the Day of Resurrection,

00:11:30.559 --> 00:11:32.559
and I will be the first to regain consciousness,

00:11:33.559 --> 00:11:36.559
only to find Moses already clutching the side of the Throne.

00:11:37.559 --> 00:11:40.559
I do not know whether he was among those who fell unconscious and revived before me,

00:11:40.559 --> 00:11:43.559
or if he was exempted due to his swoon at Mount Sinai."

00:11:44.690 --> 00:11:45.690
Agreed upon.

00:11:48.190 --> 00:11:50.190
Allah said to Moses, peace be upon him:

00:11:51.190 --> 00:11:54.190
"And what made you hasten ahead of your people, O Moses,"

00:11:55.190 --> 00:11:58.190
advancing ahead of them and leaving them behind?

00:11:59.190 --> 00:12:01.190
Moses, peace be upon him, said:

00:12:02.190 --> 00:12:04.190
"They are right behind me and will catch up with me,

00:12:05.190 --> 00:12:08.190
and I hastened to You, my Lord, that You might be well pleased."

00:12:09.289 --> 00:12:10.289
Allah said:

00:12:11.379 --> 00:12:13.379
"We have indeed tested your people after your departure

00:12:14.379 --> 00:12:16.379
with the worship of the calf,

00:12:17.379 --> 00:12:19.379
and the Samiri has led them astray."

00:12:21.730 --> 00:12:22.730
As for the Children of Israel,

00:12:23.730 --> 00:12:25.730
their conduct was truly astonishing;

00:12:26.820 --> 00:12:28.820
for when they felt that the return of Moses, peace be upon him,

00:12:29.820 --> 00:12:30.820
was delayed,

00:12:31.820 --> 00:12:34.820
though he had informed them of his Lord's appointment of thirty nights,

00:12:35.820 --> 00:12:37.820
yet when Allah added ten more to it,

00:12:37.820 --> 00:12:40.820
that very extension became the source of their trial.

00:12:41.820 --> 00:12:44.820
A man among them called the Samiri said to them:

00:12:45.820 --> 00:12:49.820
"Moses was only kept away from you on account of the jewelry in your possession

00:12:50.820 --> 00:12:52.820
that you took from Egypt without right."

00:12:53.820 --> 00:12:54.860
So he commanded them,

00:12:55.860 --> 00:12:57.860
and they gathered the ornaments and handed them over to him.

00:12:58.860 --> 00:12:59.860
He cast them into the fire

00:13:00.860 --> 00:13:02.860
and fashioned for them out of it a golden calf.

00:13:03.860 --> 00:13:05.860
Then he threw upon it a handful of dust

00:13:05.860 --> 00:13:08.860
from the hoofprints of Gabriel's steed, peace be upon him.

00:13:09.860 --> 00:13:11.889
When he cast that handful over it,

00:13:12.889 --> 00:13:14.889
it became an inanimate calf that made a lowing sound.

00:13:15.889 --> 00:13:16.919
So he said to them:

00:13:17.919 --> 00:13:19.919
“Then he produced for them a calf, of saffron hue, which gave forth a lowing sound. And they cried: This is your god and the god of Moses, but he hath forgotten.” (20:88)

00:13:20.919 --> 00:13:22.919
"Moses forgot it here,

00:13:23.919 --> 00:13:25.919
and went searching for it upon the mountain."

00:13:26.919 --> 00:13:27.919
It was also said he meant:

00:13:28.919 --> 00:13:31.919
"He forgot to mention to you that this is your god."

00:13:32.919 --> 00:13:34.980
So the Children of Israel devoted themselves to it,

00:13:35.980 --> 00:13:38.980
loving it with an affection unlike anything they had ever loved before,

00:13:39.980 --> 00:13:42.980
and they began dancing around it and worshipping it.

00:13:43.980 --> 00:13:44.980
And as Allah said regarding them:

00:13:45.980 --> 00:13:48.980
“And when We made with you a covenant and caused the Mount to tower above you, (saying): Hold fast by that which We have given you, and hear (Our Word), they said: We hear and we rebel. And (worship of) the calf was made to sink into their hearts because of their rejection (of the covenant). Say (unto them): Evil is that which your belief enjoineth on you, if ye are believers.” (2:93)

00:13:50.179 --> 00:13:52.179
Aaron, peace be upon him, said to them:

00:13:53.179 --> 00:13:56.179
"O my people, you have only been tested by this calf,

00:13:57.179 --> 00:13:59.179
so that the believer among you may be distinguished from the disbeliever.

00:14:00.179 --> 00:14:02.179
Indeed, your Lord is the Most Merciful and none other,

00:14:03.179 --> 00:14:05.179
so follow me in that to which I call you,

00:14:06.179 --> 00:14:07.179
namely the worship of Allah,

00:14:08.179 --> 00:14:10.179
and obey my command in adhering to His law."

00:14:11.179 --> 00:14:13.269
But they responded to him, saying:

00:14:14.269 --> 00:14:15.269
"We will never abandon worshipping the calf,

00:14:16.269 --> 00:14:18.269
and we will remain devoted to it right here,

00:14:19.269 --> 00:14:21.269
“They said: We shall by no means cease to be its votaries till Moses return unto us.” (20:91)

00:14:22.269 --> 00:14:23.269
listening to its sound."

00:14:24.269 --> 00:14:26.299
They vigorously opposed Aaron regarding this,

00:14:27.299 --> 00:14:28.299
and they nearly killed him.

00:14:29.340 --> 00:14:32.340
So he withdrew from them along with twelve thousand men

00:14:33.340 --> 00:14:34.340
who had not worshipped the calf.

00:14:36.899 --> 00:14:37.899
Moses (peace be upon him) returned

00:14:38.899 --> 00:14:40.899
to his people, angry and grieved.

00:14:41.899 --> 00:14:43.899
He addressed them by way of stern rebuke and reprimand:

00:14:44.899 --> 00:14:48.899
“Then Moses went back unto his folk, angry and sad. He said: O my people! Hath not your Lord promised you a fair promise? Did the time appointed then appear too long for you, or did ye wish that wrath from your Lord should come upon you, that ye broke tryst with me?” (20:86)

00:14:49.899 --> 00:14:50.899
"You have no way to deny it!

00:14:51.899 --> 00:14:53.899
And part of this gracious promise

00:14:54.899 --> 00:14:57.899
was the revelation of the Torah for your guidance and happiness,

00:14:58.899 --> 00:15:00.899
and the destruction of your enemy before your very eyes.

00:15:01.899 --> 00:15:04.899
Why, then, did you turn away from worshipping and obeying Him,

00:15:05.899 --> 00:15:08.899
even as you thrive upon His bounties and provision?

00:15:10.059 --> 00:15:13.059
Did the time of my absence seem too long to you,

00:15:14.059 --> 00:15:18.059
“Then Moses went back unto his folk, angry and sad. He said: O my people! Hath not your Lord promised you a fair promise? Did the time appointed then appear too long for you, or did ye wish that wrath from your Lord should come upon you, that ye broke tryst with me?” (20:86)

00:15:19.059 --> 00:15:22.059
so that you broke the pledge you had made to me?

00:15:23.059 --> 00:15:26.059
Which was to remain steadfast upon sincere worship of Allah alone,

00:15:27.059 --> 00:15:29.059
and then join me at Mount Sinai?"

00:15:30.059 --> 00:15:35.059
They said, "We did not break our promise to you of our own will and choice,

00:15:36.059 --> 00:15:39.059
but we were weighed down with burdens of the ornaments of the Copts,

00:15:40.059 --> 00:15:42.059
which we had taken from them without right.

00:15:43.059 --> 00:15:46.059
So we cast them into the fire at the suggestion of the Samiri."

00:15:47.059 --> 00:15:52.059
The Samiri likewise cast in the ornaments he had with him.

00:15:53.100 --> 00:15:55.100
The upshot of the excuse offered by these foolish people

00:15:56.100 --> 00:15:58.100
is that they felt scruples over the Egyptian jewelry,

00:15:59.100 --> 00:16:02.100
yet cast it off only to worship the calf!

00:16:03.100 --> 00:16:05.100
They showed scrupulousness regarding a trivial matter,

00:16:06.100 --> 00:16:08.100
while committing a monstrous crime!

00:16:10.730 --> 00:16:13.730
Moses (peace be upon him) then turned to his brother Aaron,

00:16:14.730 --> 00:16:16.730
enraged for the sake of his Lord and His religion.

00:16:17.730 --> 00:16:21.730
He seized the hair of his head with his right hand and his beard with his left,

00:16:22.730 --> 00:16:26.730
saying, "What prevented you, when you saw that they had gone astray and disbelieved,

00:16:27.730 --> 00:16:29.730
from following after me and informing me of their deviation?

00:16:30.730 --> 00:16:32.730
Did you disobey my command?"

00:16:33.889 --> 00:16:35.889
Aaron said to him, pleading for his forbearance:

00:16:35.889 --> 00:16:40.889
"O son of my mother, do not seize me by my beard nor by the hair of my head!

00:16:41.889 --> 00:16:43.889
Indeed, I had an excuse for remaining among them:

00:16:44.889 --> 00:16:48.889
I feared that if I left them alone, they would divide among themselves,

00:16:49.889 --> 00:16:51.889
and you would say, 'You caused division among them,

00:16:52.889 --> 00:16:55.889
and did not heed my counsel regarding them.' "

00:16:56.889 --> 00:17:01.889
He also said, "Indeed, the people overpowered me and were about to kill me,

00:17:02.889 --> 00:17:03.889
“And when Moses returned unto his people, angry and grieved, he said: Evil is that (course) which ye took after I had left you. Would ye hasten on the judgment of your Lord? And he cast down the tablets, and he seized his brother by the head, dragging him toward him. He said: Son of my mother! Lo! the folk did judge me weak and almost killed me. Oh, make not mine enemies to triumph over me and place me not among the evil-doers.” (7:150)

00:17:03.889 --> 00:17:07.890
so do not count me among them in their transgression!"

00:17:08.980 --> 00:17:11.980
So Moses accepted the excuse of his brother Aaron, and prayed for him.

00:17:12.980 --> 00:17:14.980
“He said: My Lord! Have mercy on me and on my brother; bring us into Thy mercy, Thou the Most Merciful of all who show mercy.” (7:151)

00:17:15.980 --> 00:17:19.980
“He said: My Lord! Have mercy on me and on my brother; bring us into Thy mercy, Thou the Most Merciful of all who show mercy.” (7:151)

00:17:21.500 --> 00:17:24.500
Moses (peace be upon him) then turned angrily toward the Samiri,

00:17:25.500 --> 00:17:27.500
the instigator and mastermind of this tribulation.

00:17:28.500 --> 00:17:31.500
He began to censure and rebuke him, saying:

00:17:31.500 --> 00:17:34.500
"What is the matter with you, O Samiri?

00:17:35.500 --> 00:17:37.500
What drove you to do what you did?"

00:17:38.500 --> 00:17:39.500
The Samiri replied:

00:17:40.500 --> 00:17:42.500
"I perceived what the people did not perceive,

00:17:43.500 --> 00:17:44.500
and saw what they did not see."

00:17:45.690 --> 00:17:48.690
It is narrated that the Samiri saw Gabriel (peace be upon him)

00:17:49.690 --> 00:17:50.690
when he came to Moses

00:17:51.690 --> 00:17:53.690
to guide him to the appointed meeting with his Lord.

00:17:54.690 --> 00:17:58.690
None of Moses' people saw Gabriel except the Samiri.

00:17:58.690 --> 00:18:04.690
He observed that wherever Gabriel's steed set its hoof, vegetation sprang green.

00:18:05.720 --> 00:18:09.720
Thus he realized that the dust touched by the steed's hoof possessed extraordinary virtue.

00:18:10.720 --> 00:18:11.720
So he took a handful of that dust,

00:18:12.720 --> 00:18:14.720
and threw it into the molten jewelry,

00:18:15.720 --> 00:18:18.720
and it turned into an image of a calf that produced a lowing sound.

00:18:19.750 --> 00:18:20.750
The Samiri said:

00:18:21.750 --> 00:18:22.750
"So I fashioned this calf for them,

00:18:23.750 --> 00:18:24.750
and such an act

00:18:25.750 --> 00:18:27.750
was enticed and made alluring to me by my own soul."

00:18:28.750 --> 00:18:29.750
He intended that the Children of Israel

00:18:30.750 --> 00:18:32.750
would abandon the worship of your God, O Moses,

00:18:33.750 --> 00:18:36.750
and worship the calf he had fashioned for them.

00:18:37.980 --> 00:18:38.980
Moses said to the Samiri:

00:18:39.980 --> 00:18:42.980
"Since you have done this, then be gone!

00:18:43.980 --> 00:18:44.980
For throughout your life, your fate

00:18:45.980 --> 00:18:47.980
shall be to suffer total ostracism by mankind,

00:18:48.980 --> 00:18:51.980
and to say to anyone who approaches you:

00:18:52.980 --> 00:18:53.980
'Touch me not!'

00:18:54.980 --> 00:18:57.980
Meaning: I shall touch no one, and no one shall touch me;

00:18:58.980 --> 00:19:01.980
I shall associate with no one, and no one shall associate with me."

00:19:03.140 --> 00:19:04.140
It was said:

00:19:05.140 --> 00:19:09.140
He was afflicted in this world with a punishment none could find more appalling or desolate,

00:19:10.140 --> 00:19:14.140
in that he was utterly barred from mingling with people:

00:19:15.140 --> 00:19:18.140
they were forbidden from meeting him, speaking to him,

00:19:19.140 --> 00:19:21.140
buying and selling with him, facing him,

00:19:22.140 --> 00:19:25.259
or engaging in any of the normal interactions of daily life.

00:19:25.259 --> 00:19:28.259
Whenever he happened to touch anyone, man or woman,

00:19:29.259 --> 00:19:31.259
both the toucher and the touched were struck with fever;

00:19:32.259 --> 00:19:34.259
that is, afflicted with a burning fever.

00:19:35.259 --> 00:19:37.259
So he shunned people, and they shunned him,

00:19:38.299 --> 00:19:40.299
and he would constantly cry out, "Touch me not!"

00:19:41.299 --> 00:19:45.299
He became more isolated among men than a murderer seeking sanctuary in the Sacred Precinct,

00:19:46.299 --> 00:19:49.299
and wilder than a startled beast in the wilderness.

00:19:50.549 --> 00:19:53.549
The wisdom behind punishing his crime in this specific manner

00:19:53.549 --> 00:19:59.549
was that he had sought prominence over the people so that they would rally around and revere him;

00:20:00.549 --> 00:20:04.549
thus, his deed became the very cause of their estrangement from him and his humiliation.

00:20:05.940 --> 00:20:08.940
Moses then made clear to him his punishment in the Hereafter,

00:20:09.940 --> 00:20:15.940
saying: "And indeed, you have an appointment in the Hereafter which Allah will never fail to keep;

00:20:16.940 --> 00:20:17.940
rather, He will surely execute it against you,

00:20:17.940 --> 00:20:24.940
visiting upon you on that Day the agonizing torment you deserve for your deviation and for leading others astray.

00:20:25.940 --> 00:20:29.190
And look at your god to which you have remained devoted,

00:20:30.190 --> 00:20:32.190
persisting in its worship instead of Allah!

00:20:33.190 --> 00:20:36.190
We will certainly burn it with fire until it melts,

00:20:37.190 --> 00:20:41.190
then scatter its dust into the sea, leaving not a trace of it."

00:20:42.190 --> 00:20:47.339
Moses (peace be upon him) then returned to those of his people who had worshipped the calf.

00:20:47.339 --> 00:20:54.339
“And when Moses said unto his people: O my people! Ye have wronged yourselves by your choosing of the calf (for worship) so turn in penitence to your Creator, and kill (the guilty) yourselves. That will be best for you with your Creator and He will relent toward you. Lo! He is the Relenting, the Merciful.” (2:54)

00:20:55.339 --> 00:20:57.440
They asked, "What should we do?"

00:20:58.440 --> 00:21:02.500
He said, "Turn back to your Creator and repent to Him."

00:21:03.500 --> 00:21:05.630
They asked, "And how are we to repent?"

00:21:06.630 --> 00:21:10.630
He said, "Allah commands you to execute the guilty among you."

00:21:11.630 --> 00:21:14.630
Meaning: the innocent among you must kill the guilty.

00:21:14.630 --> 00:21:18.630
"That is better for you in the sight of your Creator."

00:21:19.630 --> 00:21:22.730
They replied, "We submit patiently to the command of Allah."

00:21:23.730 --> 00:21:26.920
So Allah Almighty cast over them a dark cloud

00:21:27.920 --> 00:21:30.920
until they could no longer see one another,

00:21:31.920 --> 00:21:34.920
and they slew one another until evening came.

00:21:35.920 --> 00:21:40.980
When the slaying grew intense, Moses and Aaron (peace be upon them) supplicated,

00:21:40.980 --> 00:21:47.980
saying, "O our Lord, the Children of Israel are perishing! Spare the remainder! Spare the remainder!"

00:21:48.980 --> 00:21:54.049
So Allah Almighty lifted the cloud and commanded them to cease the slaying.

00:21:55.049 --> 00:21:58.049
It cleared away, revealing thousands of slain.

00:21:59.049 --> 00:22:03.109
It was said that the number of the dead reached seventy thousand.

00:22:04.180 --> 00:22:07.180
This weighed heavily upon Moses (peace be upon him),

00:22:08.240 --> 00:22:10.240
so Allah Almighty revealed to him:

00:22:11.240 --> 00:22:14.240
"Does it not please you that I admit both the slayer and the slain into Paradise?"

00:22:15.240 --> 00:22:17.460
Thus, whoever was killed died as a martyr,

00:22:18.460 --> 00:22:21.460
and whoever survived had their sins expiated.

00:22:22.849 --> 00:22:23.849
Allah Almighty said:

00:22:24.849 --> 00:22:32.849

00:22:33.849 --> 00:22:35.849
"...by your taking of the calf [for worship]. So repent..."

00:22:36.849 --> 00:22:38.849
"...so repent to your Creator..."

00:22:38.849 --> 00:22:40.849
"...and kill yourselves..."

00:22:41.849 --> 00:22:45.849

00:22:46.849 --> 00:22:47.849
"...and He accepted your repentance..."

00:22:48.849 --> 00:22:52.849
"...indeed, He is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful."

00:22:55.700 --> 00:22:57.700
Allah Almighty commanded Moses (peace be upon him)

00:22:58.700 --> 00:23:00.700
to come before Him with a delegation from the Children of Israel,

00:23:01.700 --> 00:23:04.700
to offer their repentance to Him for worshipping the calf.

00:23:05.700 --> 00:23:06.700
He appointed a time for their meeting.

00:23:06.700 --> 00:23:10.829
Moses chose seventy men from his people under his own supervision,

00:23:11.829 --> 00:23:12.829
selecting the very best of them,

00:23:13.829 --> 00:23:14.829
and said to them:

00:23:15.829 --> 00:23:16.829
"Set out with me to Allah,

00:23:17.829 --> 00:23:19.829
ask His pardon for what you have done,

00:23:20.829 --> 00:23:24.829
and beg His forgiveness for those of your people whom you left behind.

00:23:25.829 --> 00:23:27.829
Fast, purify yourselves,

00:23:28.829 --> 00:23:29.829
and cleanse your garments."

00:23:30.829 --> 00:23:32.960
Then he went out with them to Mount Sinai

00:23:33.960 --> 00:23:34.960
for the appointed meeting with his Lord.

00:23:34.960 --> 00:23:36.990
When they arrived at that place,

00:23:37.990 --> 00:23:39.990
they grew insolent and said:

00:23:40.990 --> 00:23:43.990
"We will never believe in you, Moses, until we see Allah openly!

00:23:44.990 --> 00:23:46.019
For you have spoken with Him,

00:23:47.019 --> 00:23:48.019
so show Him to us!"

00:23:49.019 --> 00:23:52.119
And these were the very best of the Children of Israel!

00:23:53.119 --> 00:23:56.119
Thereupon, the thunderbolt seized them, and they all fell dead.

00:23:57.119 --> 00:24:00.119
Moses stood beseeching and supplicating his Lord, saying:

00:24:01.119 --> 00:24:04.119
"My Lord, what shall I say to the Children of Israel

00:24:05.119 --> 00:24:08.119
when I meet them, now that You have destroyed the best among them?

00:24:09.119 --> 00:24:13.119
If You had willed, my Lord, You could have destroyed them all before, and me along with them;

00:24:14.119 --> 00:24:16.119
that would have been easier for me to bear.

00:24:17.119 --> 00:24:21.119
Will You destroy us for what the foolish among us have done?

00:24:22.119 --> 00:24:26.119
This act committed by my people in worshipping the calf

00:24:27.119 --> 00:24:29.119
was nothing but a trial and a test from You,

00:24:30.119 --> 00:24:32.119
by which You lead astray whom You will among Your creation,

00:24:32.119 --> 00:24:35.119
and guide whom You will to guidance.

00:24:36.119 --> 00:24:38.119
You are our Protector and Helper,

00:24:39.119 --> 00:24:41.119
so forgive us and have mercy upon us by Your grace;

00:24:42.119 --> 00:24:46.119
and You are the best of those who pardon offenses and conceal sins."

00:24:47.119 --> 00:24:51.150
So Allah answered his prayer and restored them to life after their death,

00:24:52.150 --> 00:24:54.150
and He forgave them their insolent demand.

00:24:55.150 --> 00:24:56.500
Allah Almighty said:

00:24:57.500 --> 00:24:59.859
"And [remember] when you said, 'O Moses...'"

00:24:59.859 --> 00:25:04.859
“And when ye said: O Moses! We will not believe in thee till we see Allah plainly; and even while ye gazed the lightning seized you.” (2:55)

00:25:05.859 --> 00:25:07.859
"...so the thunderbolt seized you..."

00:25:08.859 --> 00:25:10.859
"...so the thunderbolt seized you..."

00:25:11.859 --> 00:25:14.859
"...while you were looking on."

00:25:15.859 --> 00:25:20.920
“Then We revived you after your extinction, that ye might give thanks.” (2:56)

00:25:21.920 --> 00:25:23.920
"...that perhaps you would be grateful."

00:25:24.920 --> 00:25:29.829
To be continued, if Allah wills.

00:25:29.829 --> 00:25:33.829
And Allah knows best; all praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds.

00:25:34.829 --> 00:25:37.829
May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad,

00:25:38.829 --> 00:25:40.829
and upon his family and all his Companions.

00:25:41.829 --> 00:25:46.430
You have been listening to Stories of the Prophets.

00:25:47.430 --> 00:25:55.349
Related to guide the believer.

00:25:56.349 --> 00:26:05.500
May Allah send blessings upon our Master; let us end with prayer upon him.
