A new challenge: Who am I?
I am one of the noble Companions.
And one of those most beloved to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
I am the leader of my people.
And I am among the most handsome of people in face and the best of them in appearance.
So much so that ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, called me:
The Joseph of this Ummah.
I embraced Islam in the tenth year of the Hijrah.
I arrived to the Prophet, peace be upon him,
along with one hundred and fifty men from my people.
When we reached Medina,
I knelt my camel,
then I put on my best attire,
and entered the mosque.
The Prophet, peace be upon him, was delivering a sermon.
The people turned their eyes toward me.
I asked the person next to me,
"O servant of Allah,
did the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, mention me at all?"
He said, "Yes,
he mentioned you in the best of ways.
While he was delivering the sermon,
he paused in his speech,
and said,
'There shall enter upon you from this mountain pass
a man from the best of Yemen.
Behold, upon his face is the mark of kingship.'"
Then you entered.
When I heard that,
I praised Allah, the Almighty and Majestic.
Then I pledged allegiance to the Prophet, peace be upon him,
to perform prayer and pay zakat,
and to offer sincere counsel to every Muslim.
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, never denied me access
since I embraced Islam,
and he never saw me without smiling.
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said to me one day,
"Will you not relieve me of al-Khalasah?"
It was a house worshipped during the pre-Islamic era,
known as the Yemeni Ka'bah.
So I set out toward it with one hundred and fifty horsemen,
to demolish it and relieve the Prophet, peace be upon him, and the Muslims from it.
But I complained to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,
and mentioned to him that I could not stay firm on horseback.
He struck my chest with his hand and said,
"O Allah, make him firm,
and make him a guide who is rightly guided."
So I set out toward it,
and burned it with fire.
I once sent my servant to buy me a horse.
He found a horse that he liked,
and he bargained with its owner
until he reached three hundred dirhams.
The horse was worth more than that.
When the servant brought the horse and its owner to me to collect the price,
I said to him,
"For how much did you buy the horse?"
He said,
"For three hundred dirhams."
I said to the owner of the horse,
"Your horse is worth five hundred."
The servant was annoyed with me.
The man said,
"I am satisfied."
I said,
"Rather, it is worth eight hundred dirhams."
He said,
"I am satisfied."
So I gave him the eight hundred dirhams,
and took the horse.
The servant asked,
"What is this?"
I said to him,
"I have pledged to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,
to offer sincere counsel to every Muslim."
