A new challenge: Who am I?
I am one of the senior Companions, a chief among the Ansar, and one of the people of the Qur'an.
I was present at Badr and participated in all the battles alongside the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
The Prophet, peace be upon him, used to send me as a commander over some of the military expeditions.
He once dispatched me as commander of an expedition toward Najd, where I acquired some war booty.
At the Battle of Mu'tah, the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, chose Zayd ibn Harithah, may Allah be pleased with him, to command the army.
He said, "If Zayd is fallen, then Ja'far shall take command; and if Ja'far is fallen, then 'Abdullah ibn Rawahah."
As soon as the battle commenced and the fighting intensified,
the three commanders fell one after another before the enemy's overwhelming numbers.
When the banner fell upon the martyrdom of 'Abdullah ibn Rawahah, may Allah be pleased with him,
the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, had not appointed anyone to carry it after him.
I stepped forward, took up the banner, and said, "O gathering of Muslims!
Agree upon a man among you to lead."
They said, "You!" I replied, "I shall not do so."
The troops had begun to scatter and fall back in defeat,
so I advanced with the banner until I saw Khalid ibn al-Walid, may Allah be pleased with him,
who had been a Muslim for only three months.
I handed the banner over to him.
Khalid said, "I will not take it from you!
You are more worthy of it; you fought at Badr and you carry the Qur'an."
I said, "By Allah, O Khalid, I only took it to give it to you!
You are far more skilled in warfare than I am."
Then I called out to the Muslims at the top of my voice,
"O Muslims, do you consent to the leadership of Khalid?"
They replied, "O Allah, yes!"
So Khalid ibn al-Walid, may Allah be pleased with him, took up the banner.
Meanwhile, the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was in Madinah,
describing the events of the battle to those with him, saying:
"Then the banner was taken by a sword from among the Swords of Allah,
and Allah granted them victory."
After the death of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
I marched out with the Muslim armies to fight the apostates.
When Khalid ibn al-Walid, may Allah be pleased with him, drew near to the enemy forces,
he dispatched me and 'Ukashah ibn Mihsan as a vanguard ahead of him
to bring him intelligence.
We encountered Tulayhah ibn Khuwaylid and his brother Salamah,
who were acting as a vanguard for the people behind them.
Tulayhah fought 'Ukashah,
while I fought Salamah.
It was not long before I killed Salamah.
Then Tulayhah cried out to his brother Salamah,
"Help me against this man, for he will surely kill me!"
So Salamah and his brother turned together against 'Ukashah, may Allah be pleased with him,
and killed him.
Then Khalid ibn al-Walid arrived with the body of the Muslims,
and they found us lying slain.
They saw severe, grievous wounds upon us,
and the sight of us deeply distressed them.
So they dug a grave for us and buried us in our blood and clothes.
A period of time later,
Tulayhah ibn Khuwaylid came as a Muslim to 'Umar, the Commander of the Faithful.
'Umar said to him,
"How can I love you when you killed those two righteous men, 'Ukashah and his companion?"
Tulayhah replied,
"Allah honored them at my hands,
and He did not disgrace me at theirs."
