they are certain of it. 00:02:47.979 --> 00:02:50.979 This is an allusion censuring the People of the Scripture, 00:02:50.979 --> 00:02:58.979 who claimed to believe in what the messengers of Allah brought before Muhammad, peace be upon him, 00:02:58.979 --> 00:03:03.979 while they disbelieve in Muhammad, peace be upon him. 00:03:15.460 --> 00:03:17.750 Those are the God-fearing. 00:03:17.750 --> 00:03:22.750 And those who believe in what was revealed to Muhammad, peace be upon him, 00:03:22.750 --> 00:03:25.750 and to the messengers before him, 00:03:25.750 --> 00:03:28.750 are upon light from their Lord and a clear proof, 00:03:28.750 --> 00:03:30.750 and upon uprightness and correctness, 00:03:30.750 --> 00:03:34.750 through Allah’s guidance and success granted to them. 00:03:34.750 --> 00:03:41.750 Those are the successful ones, attaining what they sought from Allah, the Exalted, of reward, 00:03:41.750 --> 00:03:43.750 and eternity in the Gardens, 00:03:43.750 --> 00:03:48.750 and salvation from the punishment Allah has prepared for His enemies. 00:04:06.750 --> 00:04:11.009 Indeed, those who deny what was revealed to you from your Lord, 00:04:11.009 --> 00:04:15.009 it is all the same to them whether you warn them or do not warn them, 00:04:15.009 --> 00:04:17.009 because they do not believe. 00:04:17.009 --> 00:04:21.009 Allah has set a seal upon their hearts and their hearing. 00:04:33.170 --> 00:04:35.300 Allah has placed a seal upon their hearts, 00:04:35.300 --> 00:04:38.300 so that faith has no path into them, 00:04:38.300 --> 00:04:41.300 and disbelief has no way out of them. 00:04:41.300 --> 00:04:44.300 And He has placed a covering over their vision, 00:04:44.300 --> 00:04:46.300 preventing them from seeing the path of guidance, 00:04:46.300 --> 00:04:51.300 so they do not recognize the ugliness of the misguidance and ruin they are upon. 00:04:51.300 --> 00:04:53.300 And for them is a great punishment. 00:04:53.300 --> 00:04:59.459 And of the people are some who say, "We believe in Allah." 00:04:59.459 --> 00:05:05.459 “And of mankind are some who say: We believe in Allah and the Last Day, when they believe not.” (2:8) 00:05:05.459 --> 00:05:08.649 And of the people—and they are the hypocrites— 00:05:08.649 --> 00:05:13.649 are those who say, "We believe in Allah and in the Resurrection on the Day of Judgment," 00:05:13.649 --> 00:05:19.649 while they are not believers in what they claim to believe. 00:05:19.649 --> 00:05:23.649 This is a refutation of their claim regarding their own beliefs, 00:05:23.649 --> 00:05:27.649 and an informing of His Prophet, peace be upon him, 00:05:27.649 --> 00:05:30.649 that what they manifest with their tongues 00:05:30.649 --> 00:05:33.649 is contrary to what is in the depths of their hearts, 00:05:33.649 --> 00:05:36.649 and the opposite of what is in the intentions of their souls. 00:05:37.839 --> 00:05:41.839 “They think to beguile Allah and those who believe, and they beguile none save themselves; but they perceive not.” (2:9) 00:05:41.839 --> 00:05:47.839 “They think to beguile Allah and those who believe, and they beguile none save themselves; but they perceive not.” (2:9) 00:06:07.029 --> 00:06:09.029 He is deceiving himself, 00:06:09.029 --> 00:06:14.029 because he shows his soul through his actions that he is granting it its desires, 00:06:14.029 --> 00:06:17.029 and giving it the cup of its pleasure, 00:06:17.029 --> 00:06:20.029 while he is actually leading it to the pools of its own destruction, 00:06:20.029 --> 00:06:24.029 and making it taste of Allah’s wrath and painful punishment 00:06:24.029 --> 00:06:26.029 that which it cannot withstand. 00:06:26.029 --> 00:06:31.029 They do not perceive that Allah is deceiving them by granting them respite, 00:06:31.029 --> 00:06:33.290 and gradually leading them to their ruin. 00:06:37.290 --> 00:06:40.290 So Allah increased them in disease, 00:06:40.290 --> 00:06:46.290 “In their hearts is a disease, and Allah increaseth their disease. A painful doom is theirs because they lie.” (2:10) 00:06:46.290 --> 00:06:51.449 in the conviction of their hearts regarding their religion, 00:06:51.449 --> 00:06:55.449 and in their belief in Muhammad, peace be upon him, 00:06:55.449 --> 00:06:58.449 and in what he brought from Allah. 00:06:58.449 --> 00:06:59.449 It is a sickness and doubt. 00:06:59.449 --> 00:07:05.449 Allah increased them—through the limits and obligations He ordained which they had not previously been bound by— 00:07:05.449 --> 00:07:10.449 in doubt and confusion, added to the disease and doubt already in their hearts. 00:07:10.449 --> 00:07:16.449 And for them is a painful punishment for the lies they told with their tongues. 00:07:16.449 --> 00:07:20.449 “And of mankind are some who say: We believe in Allah and the Last Day, when they believe not.” (2:8) 00:07:20.449 --> 00:07:24.610 “And when it is said unto them: Make not mischief in the earth, they say: We are peacemakers only.” (2:11) 00:07:24.610 --> 00:07:29.610 “And when it is said unto them: Make not mischief in the earth, they say: We are peacemakers only.” (2:11) 00:07:29.610 --> 00:07:35.019 And when it is said to the hypocrites, "Do not cause corruption on the earth," 00:07:35.019 --> 00:07:37.019 by disobeying your Lord upon it, 00:07:37.019 --> 00:07:41.019 and by committing what He has forbidden you to commit, 00:07:41.019 --> 00:07:43.019 and by neglecting His obligations, 00:07:43.019 --> 00:07:45.019 and by doubting the religion of Allah, 00:07:45.019 --> 00:07:52.019 and by supporting those who deny Allah, His books, and His messengers against the allies of Allah, 00:07:52.019 --> 00:07:58.019 they say, "We are only reformers on the earth, and upon guidance and righteousness." 00:07:58.019 --> 00:08:06.220 “Are not they indeed the mischief-makers? But they perceive not.” (2:12) 00:08:06.220 --> 00:08:10.220 Unquestionably, it is they who are violating the command of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, 00:08:10.220 --> 00:08:12.220 transgressing His limits, 00:08:12.220 --> 00:08:14.220 committing acts of disobedience, 00:08:14.220 --> 00:08:16.220 and abandoning His obligations, 00:08:16.220 --> 00:08:19.220 and they know that they are as such. 00:08:19.220 --> 00:08:24.220 “And when it is said unto them: believe as the people believe, they say: shall we believe as the foolish believe? are not they indeed the foolish? But they know not.” (2:13) 00:08:24.220 --> 00:08:29.220 “And when it is said unto them: believe as the people believe, they say: shall we believe as the foolish believe? are not they indeed the foolish? But they know not.” (2:13) 00:08:37.220 --> 00:08:39.539 And when it is said to them, 00:08:39.539 --> 00:08:44.539 "Believe in Muhammad and in what he brought from Allah," 00:08:44.539 --> 00:08:47.539 just as the believers have believed, 00:08:47.539 --> 00:08:52.539 who believed in Muhammad, his prophethood, and what he brought from Allah, 00:08:52.539 --> 00:08:56.539 they say, "Should we believe as the ignorant have believed?" 00:08:56.539 --> 00:09:00.539 "And should we believe in Muhammad, peace be upon him," 00:09:00.539 --> 00:09:05.539 "as these people who have no intellect or understanding have believed?" 00:09:05.539 --> 00:09:09.539 Unquestionably, it is they who are the ignorant in their religion, 00:09:09.539 --> 00:09:15.539 weak in judgment regarding the beliefs and choices they have chosen for themselves, 00:09:15.539 --> 00:09:19.539 consisting of doubt and suspicion regarding the command of Allah and His Messenger, 00:09:19.539 --> 00:09:22.539 yet they think they are doing good. 00:09:22.539 --> 00:09:25.539 That is the very essence of foolishness, 00:09:25.539 --> 00:09:30.539 for the fool only causes corruption while thinking he is bringing about reform. 00:09:30.539 --> 00:09:32.539 Likewise, the hypocrite 00:09:32.539 --> 00:09:36.539 disobeys his Lord while thinking he is obeying Him, 00:09:36.539 --> 00:09:40.539 and disbelieves in Him while thinking he is believing in Him, 00:09:40.539 --> 00:09:45.539 and harms himself while thinking he is doing good to himself. 00:09:45.539 --> 00:09:50.860 And when they meet those who believe, they say, "We believe." 00:09:50.860 --> 00:10:03.860 But when they are alone with their devils, they say, "Indeed, we are with you; 00:10:03.860 --> 00:10:09.269 we were only mocking." 00:10:09.269 --> 00:10:14.269 When they meet the believers who believe in Allah, His Book, and His Messenger, 00:10:14.269 --> 00:10:20.269 they say to them, "We believe and have faith in Muhammad and what he brought from Allah," 00:10:20.269 --> 00:10:24.269 as a deception to protect their lives, wealth, and offspring. 00:10:24.269 --> 00:10:29.269 And when they are alone with their ringleaders and those of arrogance, evil, and malice among them, 00:10:29.269 --> 00:10:33.269 they say to them, "Indeed, we are with you in your religion, 00:10:33.269 --> 00:10:37.269 and we are your supporters against those who oppose you in it." 00:10:37.269 --> 00:10:42.269 "We are only mocking the companions of Muhammad, peace be upon him," 00:10:42.269 --> 00:10:48.269 "by telling them when we meet them, 'We believe in Allah and the Last Day.'" 00:10:48.269 --> 00:10:56.429 Allah mocks them and prolongs them in their transgression, wandering blindly. 00:10:56.429 --> 00:11:01.690 Allah’s mocking consists of granting the hypocrites in this world 00:11:01.690 --> 00:11:06.690 rulings that include them in the count of those covered by the name of Islam, 00:11:06.690 --> 00:11:09.690 even if they harbor the opposite in their hearts, 00:11:10.690 --> 00:11:15.690 despite Allah’s knowledge of their lies and His awareness of the malice of their beliefs, 00:11:15.690 --> 00:11:20.690 until they think He will gather them in the Hereafter with the believers. 00:11:20.690 --> 00:11:25.690 But Allah has prepared for them His painful punishment and severe torment, 00:11:25.690 --> 00:11:29.690 mocking, ridiculing, deceiving, and plotting against them. 00:11:29.690 --> 00:11:34.690 He grants them respite and leaves them to persist in their transgression and disbelief, 00:11:34.690 --> 00:11:37.690 wandering in confusion and error, 00:11:38.690 --> 00:11:41.690 finding no way to escape from it. 00:11:58.230 --> 00:12:02.230 Those are the ones who have purchased misguidance and abandoned guidance, 00:12:02.230 --> 00:12:04.230 so they have lost and have not gained, 00:12:04.230 --> 00:12:09.230 nor were they guided in their choice of misguidance over guidance, 00:12:09.230 --> 00:12:12.230 and their exchange of disbelief for faith. 00:12:35.549 --> 00:12:38.940 The example of the hypocrites’ illumination 00:12:38.940 --> 00:12:43.940 by what they manifest of affirmation of Allah and Muhammad, peace be upon him, 00:12:43.940 --> 00:12:48.940 and what he brought—in speech, while they deny it in their hearts— 00:12:48.940 --> 00:12:51.940 is like the illumination of one who kindles a fire; 00:12:51.940 --> 00:12:54.940 once it lit up and he saw what was around him, 00:12:54.940 --> 00:12:56.940 the fire died down and was extinguished, 00:12:56.940 --> 00:12:58.940 so his light departed, 00:12:58.940 --> 00:13:02.940 and the one who was illuminated by it returned to darkness and confusion. 00:13:03.940 --> 00:13:05.940 Likewise are the hypocrites; 00:13:05.940 --> 00:13:07.940 Allah has taken away their light, 00:13:07.940 --> 00:13:13.940 and left them in darkness, unable to see after the light they were in during this world, 00:13:13.940 --> 00:13:17.940 due to what they manifested with their tongues of affirmation of Islam, 00:13:17.940 --> 00:13:20.940 while they harbored the opposite. 00:13:29.450 --> 00:13:31.450 They are deaf to guidance and the truth, 00:13:31.450 --> 00:13:35.450 so they do not hear them due to Allah’s abandonment of them. 00:13:35.450 --> 00:13:37.450 They are dumb regarding speaking of them, 00:13:37.450 --> 00:13:39.450 so they do not utter them. 00:13:39.450 --> 00:13:43.450 They are blind to seeing them so as to understand them, 00:13:43.450 --> 00:13:47.450 so they will not return to abandoning their misguidance. 00:14:01.740 --> 00:14:13.740 “Or like a rainstorm from the sky, wherein is darkness, thunder and the flash of lightning. They thrust their fingers in their ears by reason of the thunder-claps, for fear of death, Allah encompasseth the disbelievers (in His guidance, His omniscience and His omnipotence).” (2:19) 00:14:13.740 --> 00:14:19.740 And Allah is encompassing of the disbelievers. 00:14:20.990 --> 00:14:24.990 The example of the hypocrites’ illumination by the light of their affirmation of Islam, 00:14:24.990 --> 00:14:26.990 while concealing disbelief, 00:14:26.990 --> 00:14:28.990 is like a rainstorm traveling by night 00:14:28.990 --> 00:14:31.990 in a dark cloud and a dark night, 00:14:31.990 --> 00:14:37.990 driven by thunder, with lightning flashing at its edges, intense in its brilliance. 00:14:37.990 --> 00:14:41.990 The flash of its lightning almost takes away their sight and snatches it, 00:14:41.990 --> 00:14:44.990 due to the intensity of its brightness and the light of its rays. 00:14:44.990 --> 00:14:47.990 And from it, thunderbolts descend at times, 00:14:47.990 --> 00:14:52.990 almost causing souls to perish from the intensity of their terror. 00:14:52.990 --> 00:14:57.990 Allah struck the rainstorm as a parable for the outward faith of the hypocrite, 00:14:57.990 --> 00:15:01.990 and the darkness within it as a parable for his misguidance, 00:15:01.990 --> 00:15:05.990 and the light of the lightning as a parable for the light of his faith, 00:15:05.990 --> 00:15:10.990 and his shielding himself from the thunderbolts by putting his fingers in his ears 00:15:10.990 --> 00:15:16.990 as a parable for the weakness of his heart and the terror of his soul at the arrival of Allah’s punishment at his doorstep, 00:15:16.990 --> 00:15:18.990 and his walking in the light of the lightning 00:15:18.990 --> 00:15:21.990 as a parable for his steadfastness on the light of his faith, 00:15:21.990 --> 00:15:23.990 and his standing still in the darkness 00:15:24.990 --> 00:15:28.990 as a parable for his confusion in his misguidance and his relapse into his blindness. 00:15:28.990 --> 00:15:32.019 And Allah is the Gatherer of the disbelievers, 00:15:32.019 --> 00:15:34.019 so He will inflict His punishment upon them. 00:15:54.120 --> 00:16:06.629 Then He, the Exalted in remembrance, returned to describing the hypocrites’ affirmation with their tongues, 00:16:06.629 --> 00:16:08.629 and said: 00:16:08.629 --> 00:16:14.629 The affirmation they manifested with their tongues regarding Allah, His Messenger, and what he brought 00:16:14.629 --> 00:16:20.629 almost takes away their sight and snatches it due to the intensity of its brightness and the light of its rays. 00:16:20.629 --> 00:16:23.629 Whenever the light of faith shines for them, 00:16:23.629 --> 00:16:26.629 they see in it what pleases them in their immediate worldly life, 00:16:26.629 --> 00:16:28.629 such as victory over enemies, 00:16:28.629 --> 00:16:31.629 obtaining spoils in military expeditions, 00:16:31.629 --> 00:16:34.629 and safety for their bodies, families, and children; 00:16:34.629 --> 00:16:37.629 they remain steadfast upon it and persist in it. 00:16:37.629 --> 00:16:39.629 But when it becomes dark, 00:16:39.629 --> 00:16:42.629 and they do not see in Islam what pleases them, 00:16:42.629 --> 00:16:46.629 they persist in their hypocrisy and remain steadfast in their misguidance, 00:16:46.629 --> 00:16:50.629 just like the traveler walking in the darkness of the night and the darkness of the rainstorm; 00:16:50.629 --> 00:16:55.629 when a flash of lightning occurs, he sees his path, 00:16:55.629 --> 00:16:58.629 but when the light of the lightning departs from them, 00:16:58.629 --> 00:17:02.629 he is confused in his path and does not know his way. 00:17:02.629 --> 00:17:06.630 If Allah had willed, He would have taken away the hearing and sight of the hypocrites. 00:17:06.630 --> 00:17:09.630 Indeed, Allah is over all things competent, 00:17:09.630 --> 00:17:14.630 and over inflicting His wrath upon them and sending down His vengeance upon them. 00:17:20.789 --> 00:17:23.789 O all of mankind, 00:17:23.789 --> 00:17:26.789 whether disbelievers, hypocrites, or others, 00:17:26.789 --> 00:17:29.819 from among all of His creation who are held accountable: 00:17:29.819 --> 00:17:33.819 Worship your Lord alone, He who created you and created your forefathers, 00:17:33.819 --> 00:17:37.819 your ancestors, and all of creation besides you, 00:17:37.819 --> 00:17:40.819 so that you may guard against His wrath and anger 00:17:40.819 --> 00:17:42.819 from descending upon you, 00:17:42.819 --> 00:17:45.819 and so that you may be among the righteous. 00:17:45.819 --> 00:17:48.819 So that they may descend upon you, 00:17:48.819 --> 00:17:53.950 and you may be among the righteous with whom their Lord is pleased. 00:17:53.950 --> 00:17:58.950 “Who hath appointed the earth a resting-place for you, and the sky a canopy; and causeth water to pour down from the sky, thereby producing fruits as food for you. And do not set up rivals to Allah when ye know (better).” (2:22) 00:18:27.720 --> 00:18:30.099 Worship your Lord, 00:18:30.099 --> 00:18:33.099 who made the earth a resting place and a foundation for you, 00:18:33.099 --> 00:18:36.099 and a stable place for you to dwell upon. 00:18:36.099 --> 00:18:39.140 And the sky as a structure above the earth, 00:18:39.140 --> 00:18:41.140 in the form of a dome. 00:18:41.140 --> 00:18:43.140 And He sent down rain from the sky, 00:18:43.140 --> 00:18:46.140 and thereby brought forth from their crops and plantations 00:18:47.140 --> 00:18:49.140 fruits as a provision for them, 00:18:49.140 --> 00:18:51.140 as nourishment and sustenance. 00:18:51.140 --> 00:18:55.140 So do not set up rivals or equals to Allah in obedience, 00:18:55.140 --> 00:18:59.140 while you know that you have no lord who provides for you other than Him, 00:18:59.140 --> 00:19:03.140 and that He is the Originator of creation and its Creator. 00:19:03.140 --> 00:19:07.200 “And if ye are in doubt concerning that which We reveal unto Our slave (Muhammad), then produce a surah of the like thereof, and call your witness beside Allah if ye are truthful.” (2:23) 00:19:07.200 --> 00:19:11.200 “And if ye are in doubt concerning that which We reveal unto Our slave (Muhammad), then produce a surah of the like thereof, and call your witness beside Allah if ye are truthful.” (2:23) 00:19:11.200 --> 00:19:13.200 Then produce a surah. 00:19:13.200 --> 00:19:17.259 “And if ye are in doubt concerning that which We reveal unto Our slave (Muhammad), then produce a surah of the like thereof, and call your witness beside Allah if ye are truthful.” (2:23) 00:19:17.259 --> 00:19:23.259 “And if ye are in doubt concerning that which We reveal unto Our slave (Muhammad), then produce a surah of the like thereof, and call your witness beside Allah if ye are truthful.” (2:23) 00:19:23.259 --> 00:19:30.259 “And if ye are in doubt concerning that which We reveal unto Our slave (Muhammad), then produce a surah of the like thereof, and call your witness beside Allah if ye are truthful.” (2:23) 00:19:30.259 --> 00:19:34.259 If you are truthful. 00:19:34.259 --> 00:19:37.519 And if you, O polytheists, are in doubt 00:19:37.519 --> 00:19:42.519 regarding what has been revealed to My servant of the Qur'an from Me, 00:19:42.519 --> 00:19:45.519 then produce a surah similar to this Qur'an, 00:19:45.519 --> 00:19:49.519 from your own speech that is comparable to it in the Arabic language, 00:19:49.519 --> 00:19:51.519 since you are Arabs. 00:19:51.519 --> 00:19:57.519 And call upon your helpers and witnesses to assist you in producing a surah like it, 00:19:57.519 --> 00:20:02.519 those who observe you and aid you in your denial of Allah and His Messenger, 00:20:02.519 --> 00:20:05.519 if you are truthful in your claim 00:20:05.519 --> 00:20:11.519 that what Muhammad, peace be upon him, has brought you is a fabrication and a lie. 00:20:11.519 --> 00:20:19.619 “And if ye do it not - and ye can never do it - then guard yourselves against the Fire prepared for disbelievers, whose fuel is of men and stones.” (2:24) 00:20:19.619 --> 00:20:25.619 “And if ye do it not - and ye can never do it - then guard yourselves against the Fire prepared for disbelievers, whose fuel is of men and stones.” (2:24) 00:20:25.619 --> 00:20:29.869 Prepared for the disbelievers. 00:20:29.869 --> 00:20:35.869 But if you fail to produce a surah like it, even though you and your partners have conspired against it, 00:20:35.869 --> 00:20:39.869 and you will never be able to produce a surah like it, 00:20:39.869 --> 00:20:44.869 then fear the Fire whose fuel is people and stones, 00:20:44.869 --> 00:20:49.259 prepared for those who deny that Allah is their Lord. 00:20:49.259 --> 00:21:06.259 “And give glad tidings (O Muhammad) unto those who believe and do good works; that theirs are Gardens underneath which rivers flow; as often as they are regaled with food of the fruit thereof, they say: this is what was given us aforetime; and it is given to them in resemblance. There for them are pure companions; there for ever they abide.” (2:25) 00:21:24.259 --> 00:21:28.259 And they will abide therein forever. 00:21:28.259 --> 00:21:33.450 O Muhammad, give glad tidings to those who believe that you are My Messenger, 00:21:33.450 --> 00:21:38.450 and who confirm that belief by performing righteous deeds, 00:21:38.450 --> 00:21:42.450 that for them are gardens beneath which rivers flow. 00:21:42.450 --> 00:21:46.450 Whenever they are provided with fruit from the trees of the gardens, 00:21:46.450 --> 00:21:51.450 “And give glad tidings (O Muhammad) unto those who believe and do good works; that theirs are Gardens underneath which rivers flow; as often as they are regaled with food of the fruit thereof, they say: this is what was given us aforetime; and it is given to them in resemblance. There for them are pure companions; there for ever they abide.” (2:25) 00:21:51.450 --> 00:21:57.450 and they are brought what they are provided with of its fruits, similar in appearance and color to the fruits of the world, 00:21:57.450 --> 00:22:00.450 yet different in taste and flavor. 00:22:00.450 --> 00:22:03.450 And for those who believe and do righteous deeds, 00:22:03.450 --> 00:22:11.450 [there are] spouses purified from all filth, impurity, and doubt that may exist in the women of this world. 00:22:11.450 --> 00:22:20.450 And they will abide in the gardens forever, remaining in the joy and everlasting bliss that Allah has granted them therein.
