A new challenge: Who am I?
I am one of the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
I am from the Muhajirun of Makkah.
I was among the first to embrace Islam.
I migrated to Abyssinia twice.
Then I migrated to Madinah.
I participated in Badr and in all the military expeditions of the Prophet, peace be upon him.
Before Islam, I was among the affluent in Makkah.
My father was 'Utbah ibn Rabi'ah.
He was one of the masters of Makkah.
And one of its nobles.
When I embraced Islam,
My father disowned me.
And withheld everything from me.
The Prophet, peace be upon him, said to his Companions on the day of Badr:
"I know some men from Banu Hashim and others
who have been brought out against their will.
They have no desire to fight us.
So whoever among you encounters any of the Banu Hashim,
do not kill him.
And whoever encounters Abu al-Bakhtari ibn Hisham,
do not kill him.
And whoever encounters al-'Abbas ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib,
the uncle of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,
do not kill him.
For he was only brought out under duress."
So I said,
"Shall we kill our fathers and our sons,
and our brothers and our kin,
while we spare al-'Abbas?
By Allah, if I encounter him, I will strike him with my sword."
My statement reached the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.
He said to 'Umar ibn al-Khattab,
"Shall the face of the uncle of the Messenger of Allah be struck with a sword?"
'Umar said,
"O Messenger of Allah,
let me strike off his head with my sword,
for by Allah, he has acted hypocritically."
But the Prophet, peace be upon him, forbade him.
I feared for myself because of that statement.
And I said,
"I will remain fearful of it,
unless martyrdom atones for it for me."
And so I was killed as a martyr on the day of al-Yamamah.
At the beginning of the battle on the day of Badr,
I challenged my father to a duel,
but the Prophet, peace be upon him, forbade me.
Then my father was killed that day,
while he was still in a state of disbelief.
When the slain were thrown into the pit of Badr,
the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, stood over them,
calling them by their names and saying,
"O 'Utbah, O Shaybah,
O Umayyah ibn Khalaf,
O Abu Jahl,
have you found what your Lord promised you to be true?
As for me,
I have found what my Lord promised me to be true."
Then the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, turned,
and saw me looking distressed,
my face having changed.
He said to me,
"Perhaps you are troubled by the matter of your father?"
I said, "No,
by Allah, I have no doubt about my father or his fate.
But I knew my father to be a man of opinion, forbearance, and virtue,
so I had hoped that this would draw him toward Islam.
When I saw his fate today,
and that he died in disbelief despite what I had hoped for him,
it saddened me."
So the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, prayed for my well-being.
In the Prophetic biography, I am known much for my freedman, Salim.
I had adopted him before Islam.
But when Islam abolished adoption,
he became my freedman.
He and I were like brothers.
We participated together in fighting the apostates
during the caliphate of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him.
And we were killed together in the Battle of al-Yamamah.
