00:00:16.140 --> 00:00:22.480 I am one of the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:00:22.480 --> 00:00:25.480 I am from the Muhajirun of Makkah. 00:00:25.480 --> 00:00:28.480 I was among the first to embrace Islam. 00:00:28.480 --> 00:00:31.480 I migrated to Abyssinia twice. 00:00:31.480 --> 00:00:33.479 Then I migrated to Madinah. 00:00:33.479 --> 00:00:39.539 I participated in Badr and in all the military expeditions of the Prophet, peace be upon him. 00:00:39.539 --> 00:00:43.740 Before Islam, I was among the affluent in Makkah. 00:00:43.740 --> 00:00:46.740 My father was 'Utbah ibn Rabi'ah. 00:00:46.740 --> 00:00:49.740 He was one of the masters of Makkah. 00:00:49.740 --> 00:00:52.740 And one of its nobles. 00:00:52.740 --> 00:00:54.770 When I embraced Islam, 00:00:54.770 --> 00:00:55.770 My father disowned me. 00:00:55.770 --> 00:00:58.770 And withheld everything from me. 00:00:58.770 --> 00:01:04.760 The Prophet, peace be upon him, said to his Companions on the day of Badr: 00:01:04.760 --> 00:01:08.760 "I know some men from Banu Hashim and others 00:01:08.760 --> 00:01:10.760 who have been brought out against their will. 00:01:10.760 --> 00:01:13.760 They have no desire to fight us. 00:01:13.760 --> 00:01:16.760 So whoever among you encounters any of the Banu Hashim, 00:01:16.760 --> 00:01:18.760 do not kill him. 00:01:18.760 --> 00:01:21.760 And whoever encounters Abu al-Bakhtari ibn Hisham, 00:01:21.760 --> 00:01:23.760 do not kill him. 00:01:23.760 --> 00:01:26.760 And whoever encounters al-'Abbas ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib, 00:01:27.760 --> 00:01:30.760 the uncle of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, 00:01:30.760 --> 00:01:32.760 do not kill him. 00:01:32.760 --> 00:01:35.760 For he was only brought out under duress." 00:01:35.760 --> 00:01:37.890 So I said, 00:01:37.890 --> 00:01:40.890 "Shall we kill our fathers and our sons, 00:01:40.890 --> 00:01:42.890 and our brothers and our kin, 00:01:42.890 --> 00:01:44.890 while we spare al-'Abbas? 00:01:44.890 --> 00:01:49.049 By Allah, if I encounter him, I will strike him with my sword." 00:01:49.049 --> 00:01:54.049 My statement reached the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him. 00:01:54.049 --> 00:01:56.049 He said to 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, 00:01:56.049 --> 00:02:02.049 "Shall the face of the uncle of the Messenger of Allah be struck with a sword?" 00:02:02.049 --> 00:02:04.209 'Umar said, 00:02:04.209 --> 00:02:05.209 "O Messenger of Allah, 00:02:05.209 --> 00:02:09.210 let me strike off his head with my sword, 00:02:09.210 --> 00:02:11.210 for by Allah, he has acted hypocritically." 00:02:11.210 --> 00:02:15.370 But the Prophet, peace be upon him, forbade him. 00:02:15.370 --> 00:02:19.500 I feared for myself because of that statement. 00:02:19.500 --> 00:02:20.500 And I said, 00:02:20.500 --> 00:02:23.500 "I will remain fearful of it, 00:02:23.500 --> 00:02:27.500 unless martyrdom atones for it for me." 00:02:27.500 --> 00:02:32.199 And so I was killed as a martyr on the day of al-Yamamah. 00:02:32.199 --> 00:02:35.199 At the beginning of the battle on the day of Badr, 00:02:35.199 --> 00:02:38.199 I challenged my father to a duel, 00:02:38.199 --> 00:02:42.259 but the Prophet, peace be upon him, forbade me. 00:02:42.259 --> 00:02:44.259 Then my father was killed that day, 00:02:44.259 --> 00:02:46.259 while he was still in a state of disbelief. 00:02:46.259 --> 00:02:49.259 When the slain were thrown into the pit of Badr, 00:02:49.259 --> 00:02:53.259 the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, stood over them, 00:02:53.259 --> 00:02:56.259 calling them by their names and saying, 00:02:56.259 --> 00:02:59.259 "O 'Utbah, O Shaybah, 00:02:59.259 --> 00:03:01.259 O Umayyah ibn Khalaf, 00:03:01.259 --> 00:03:03.259 O Abu Jahl, 00:03:03.259 --> 00:03:07.259 have you found what your Lord promised you to be true? 00:03:07.259 --> 00:03:08.259 As for me, 00:03:08.259 --> 00:03:12.259 I have found what my Lord promised me to be true." 00:03:12.259 --> 00:03:16.550 Then the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, turned, 00:03:16.550 --> 00:03:18.550 and saw me looking distressed, 00:03:18.550 --> 00:03:20.550 my face having changed. 00:03:20.550 --> 00:03:22.620 He said to me, 00:03:22.620 --> 00:03:26.680 "Perhaps you are troubled by the matter of your father?" 00:03:26.680 --> 00:03:28.680 I said, "No, 00:03:28.680 --> 00:03:32.680 by Allah, I have no doubt about my father or his fate. 00:03:32.680 --> 00:03:37.680 But I knew my father to be a man of opinion, forbearance, and virtue, 00:03:37.680 --> 00:03:42.680 so I had hoped that this would draw him toward Islam. 00:03:42.680 --> 00:03:45.680 When I saw his fate today, 00:03:45.680 --> 00:03:49.680 and that he died in disbelief despite what I had hoped for him, 00:03:49.680 --> 00:03:51.680 it saddened me." 00:03:51.680 --> 00:03:56.740 So the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, prayed for my well-being. 00:03:56.740 --> 00:04:01.740 In the Prophetic biography, I am known much for my freedman, Salim. 00:04:01.740 --> 00:04:05.740 I had adopted him before Islam. 00:04:05.740 --> 00:04:08.740 But when Islam abolished adoption, 00:04:08.740 --> 00:04:10.740 he became my freedman. 00:04:10.740 --> 00:04:13.740 He and I were like brothers. 00:04:13.740 --> 00:04:17.740 We participated together in fighting the apostates 00:04:17.740 --> 00:04:21.740 during the caliphate of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him. 00:04:21.740 --> 00:04:25.740 And we were killed together in the Battle of al-Yamamah. 00:04:25.740 --> 00:04:28.220 So, who am I?
