Among the aesthetic beauties of the Prophetic biography (Seerah)
Is the gentleness of marital life
You might be astonished when you hear of a man of great stature and heavy responsibilities
Practicing kindness with his family
Bringing joy to them as a form of relaxation and relief
For marriage, being a pasture of beauty and a garden of intimacy
Was not a place for absolute sternness or rigid seriousness
Where the poor wife is deprived of the pleasures of life
Or the enjoyment of occasional lightheartedness
Therefore, here is a lesson from the lessons of good companionship
It came in a hadith narrated by 'A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her
That she was with the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, on a journey
She said
I raced him
And I beat him on foot
Then, when I gained some weight
I raced him again, and he beat me
He said
This is for that previous race
This great Prophet and supreme educator
Who had so many responsibilities
Still had time to bring comfort to his family and joy to their hearts
He would sometimes race his wife
She beat him in their younger days
Then, with the passing of time and weight gain
He returned the previous defeat to her
By Allah
Have you ever heard of such gentleness and beauty in a marital relationship?
Scholars note that this took place during one of his journeys
While he was with a caravan
He ordered them to move ahead
Then they raced each other
He was aware of his strength in both instances
Yet he remained humble and approachable with his family
And shared the rhythms of life with them
So that life might have its ups and downs
Ensuring that life continues and companionship remains pleasant
And peace
