Among the aesthetic beauties of the Prophetic biography.
Practical courage.
His courage was not merely fine words,
Shaking the rafters of pulpits,
Nor eloquent sermons,
That cause gatherings to tremble,
Nor words broadcast and printed on papers,
That cover the horizons,
Or poems celebrated by poets.
Rather, it was beyond all that;
It was a practical exercise,
And a living application of courage and valor.
He would face death and be confronted by fate,
Yet he would meet it with a brave, tranquil heart.
Such was the Prophet, peace be upon him,
In his courage and his steadfastness.
The verse of exemplary conduct, famous on every tongue,
Was revealed in the context of the Battle of the Trench,
And the great trial therein,
With the city under siege.
“Verily in the messenger of Allah ye have a good example for him who looketh unto Allah and the Last Day, and remembereth Allah much.” (33:21)
For those who hope in Allah and the Last Day.
It was not revealed regarding prayer, zakat, or Hajj,
But rather in a momentous scene,
And in the midst of rare courage and firm steadfastness.
So come to it, and learn from its context.
Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, says:
"When the heat of battle intensified,
And the two armies met,
We would seek protection behind the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,
And none of us would be closer to the enemy than he was."
Here you see active participation,
And a genuine presence,
Drawing near to the enemy,
With his Companions seeking his support,
Which indicates the greatness of the heart he possessed,
And the courageous soul,
That does not heed the champions,
Nor fear the arrows.
As it has been said:
"Champions pass by you in defeat,
While your face is bright and your mouth is smiling.
You gathered their wings upon your heart with such an embrace,
That the inner and outer feathers of the bird perish beneath it."
And Allah is the Grantor of success.
