A new challenge: Who am I?
I am one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.
I embraced Islam in the Year of Delegations, the ninth year after the Hijrah.
I was the first to light a lamp in the Prophet’s Mosque.
I am the only one from whom the Prophet, peace be upon him, narrated a hadith.
This occurred when he narrated my account of the Jassasah.
That account is that I once set sail on the sea with thirty men.
The waves tossed us about for a month.
Then, we sought refuge on an island.
I told the Prophet, peace be upon him, our story.
He, peace be upon him, stood up quickly.
He ascended the pulpit and called out to the people, "Prayer is gathering!"
The people gathered, and he said:
"O people!
I did not call you out of desire or fear.
But this man has informed me
that a group of people from Palestine set sail on the sea.
The wind cast them onto an island in the sea.
There, they found a beast covered in thick hair.
They could not tell if it was male or female
because of the density of its hair.
They asked, 'Who are you?'
It replied:
'I am the Jassasah.'
They asked:
'Then tell us.'
It said:
'I will neither inform you nor ask you.
But in this monastery, there is a man who is eager
to inform you and to be informed by you.'
They entered the monastery.
There, they found a man with one eye,
shackled in iron.
He asked:
'Who are you?'
They said:
'We are Arabs.'
He asked:
'Has the Prophet been sent among you?'
They said, 'Yes.'
He asked:
'Have the Arabs followed him?'
They said, 'Yes.'
He said:
'That is better for them.'
He asked:
'What has become of Persia?
Has he prevailed over it?'
They said, 'No.'
He said:
'Know that he will prevail over it.'
Then he asked:
'What has become of the spring of Zughar?'
They said:
'It is flowing full.'
He asked:
'What has become of the palm trees of Baysan?
Have they borne fruit?'
They said:
'Yes,
they have begun to.'
He said:
Then he gave a leap
so great that we thought he would escape.
We asked, 'Who are you?'
He said:
'I am the Dajjal.
I shall tread upon the entire earth,
except for Makkah and Taybah (Madinah).'"
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, then said:
"Rejoice, O community of Muslims!
This is Taybah,
and he shall not enter it."
After my conversion to Islam,
I became known for my abundant worship, my night prayers,
and my recitation of the Qur'an.
On one of those nights,
I stood in the mosque after the Isha prayer
to pray.
I passed by this verse:
"The Fire will sear their faces,
and they will be therein, scowling."
I kept repeating it
until I heard the call to the dawn prayer.
