WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:03.200 In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. 00:00:05.160 --> 00:00:08.039 A summary of the Tafsir of al-Tabari. 00:00:08.589 --> 00:00:12.710 Abridged by Dr. 'Aqil ibn Salim al-Shammar. 00:00:14.019 --> 00:00:16.100 Surah al-Layl (The Night). 00:00:18.500 --> 00:00:22.699 In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. 00:00:22.699 --> 00:00:25.500 By the night when it covers. 00:00:25.500 --> 00:00:29.500 And by the day when it shines forth. 00:00:29.500 --> 00:00:33.899 “And Him Who hath created male and female,” (92:3) 00:00:33.899 --> 00:00:37.899 Indeed, your efforts are diverse. 00:00:37.899 --> 00:00:41.469 The Exalted says, swearing by the night, 00:00:41.469 --> 00:00:44.469 When it covers the day with its darkness, 00:00:44.469 --> 00:00:47.469 Removing its light and bringing forth its gloom. 00:00:47.469 --> 00:00:50.469 And by the night as it covers the day. 00:00:50.469 --> 00:00:54.469 And He swears by the day when it brightens and illuminates, 00:00:54.469 --> 00:00:57.469 Making visible to the eyes what the darkness of the night 00:00:57.469 --> 00:01:00.469 Had previously obscured and hidden, 00:01:00.469 --> 00:01:03.469 Preventing it from being seen clearly. 00:01:03.469 --> 00:01:04.629 And His saying: 00:01:04.629 --> 00:01:07.629 “And Him Who hath created male and female,” (92:3) 00:01:07.629 --> 00:01:10.629 It may be an oath from Allah, whose praise is exalted, 00:01:10.629 --> 00:01:12.629 By the Creator of the male and the female, 00:01:12.629 --> 00:01:16.629 Or it may be an oath by His act of creating the male and the female. 00:01:16.629 --> 00:01:19.790 Indeed, your efforts are diverse. 00:01:19.790 --> 00:01:23.819 Meaning: your deeds are varied, O people. 00:01:23.819 --> 00:01:28.819 For among you are those who disbelieve in their Lord and disobey His commands and prohibitions, 00:01:28.819 --> 00:01:32.819 And those who believe in Him and obey His commands and prohibitions. 00:01:32.819 --> 00:01:38.560 As for he who gives and fears Allah, 00:01:38.560 --> 00:01:41.560 And believes in the best (the truth), 00:01:41.560 --> 00:01:44.560 We will facilitate for him the way to ease. 00:01:44.560 --> 00:01:49.560 But as for he who withholds and considers himself self-sufficient, 00:01:49.560 --> 00:01:52.560 And denies the best (the truth), 00:01:52.560 --> 00:01:55.560 We will facilitate for him the way to hardship. 00:01:55.560 --> 00:02:01.329 As for he who gives and fears Allah among you, O people, in the path of Allah, 00:02:01.329 --> 00:02:06.329 And follows what Allah commanded him to give from his wealth and what He bestowed upon him of His bounty, 00:02:06.329 --> 00:02:09.330 And fears Allah and avoids His prohibitions, 00:02:09.330 --> 00:02:14.330 And believes in the reward from Allah for what he gave of his wealth, 00:02:14.330 --> 00:02:19.330 In accordance with what Allah commanded him to spend, 00:02:19.330 --> 00:02:22.330 We will prepare him for the path of ease, 00:02:22.330 --> 00:02:26.330 Which is to perform the deeds that Allah is pleased with in this world, 00:02:26.330 --> 00:02:30.330 So that He may grant him Paradise in the Hereafter. 00:02:30.330 --> 00:02:33.389 As for he who is stingy with his spending in the path of Allah, 00:02:33.389 --> 00:02:37.389 And withholds what Allah has bestowed upon him of His bounty, 00:02:37.389 --> 00:02:41.389 Refusing to spend it in the ways Allah has commanded, 00:02:41.389 --> 00:02:46.389 And considers himself independent of his Lord, not seeking His favor through obedience, 00:02:46.389 --> 00:02:49.389 Nor seeking increase in what He has granted him, 00:02:49.389 --> 00:02:52.389 And denies the reward, 00:02:52.389 --> 00:02:56.389 We will prepare him in this world for the path of hardship. 00:02:56.389 --> 00:03:02.740 “His riches will not save him when he perisheth.” (92:11) 00:03:02.740 --> 00:03:05.740 Indeed, upon Us is the guidance. 00:03:05.740 --> 00:03:10.740 “And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former.” (92:13) 00:03:10.740 --> 00:03:15.379 What will avail this person who is stingy with his wealth, 00:03:15.379 --> 00:03:17.379 And considers himself independent of his Lord, 00:03:17.379 --> 00:03:21.379 When he falls into Hell on the Day of Resurrection? 00:03:21.379 --> 00:03:25.500 Indeed, it is for Us to clarify the truth from falsehood, 00:03:25.500 --> 00:03:27.500 And obedience from disobedience. 00:03:27.500 --> 00:03:31.569 And to Us belongs the dominion of all that is in this world and the Hereafter; 00:03:31.569 --> 00:03:34.569 We give from both to whom We will among Our creation, 00:03:34.569 --> 00:03:36.569 And withhold it from whom We will. 00:03:36.569 --> 00:03:42.340 So I have warned you of a Fire which rages. 00:03:42.340 --> 00:03:46.340 None will enter it except the most wretched, 00:03:46.340 --> 00:03:49.340 Who denies and turns away. 00:03:49.340 --> 00:03:53.340 But the righteous will be kept far from it, 00:03:53.340 --> 00:03:57.340 He who gives his wealth to purify himself. 00:03:57.340 --> 00:04:04.340 And he has no favor from anyone to be repaid, 00:04:04.340 --> 00:04:10.340 “Except as seeking (to fulfil) the purpose of his Lord Most High.” (92:20) 00:04:10.340 --> 00:04:13.340 And he will surely be satisfied. 00:04:13.340 --> 00:04:17.009 I have warned you, O people, of a Fire that blazes, 00:04:17.009 --> 00:04:22.009 Which none shall enter to be scorched by its flames except the most wretched, 00:04:22.009 --> 00:04:25.009 Who denied the signs of his Lord and turned away from them, 00:04:25.009 --> 00:04:27.009 And did not believe in them. 00:04:27.009 --> 00:04:31.009 But the righteous will be saved from the fire that rages, 00:04:31.009 --> 00:04:34.009 He who gives his wealth in this world, 00:04:34.009 --> 00:04:38.009 Fulfilling the rights of Allah that He has obligated upon him, 00:04:38.009 --> 00:04:42.009 Purifying himself from his sins by giving that wealth. 00:04:42.009 --> 00:04:45.040 And he does not owe anyone among the creation of Allah, 00:04:45.040 --> 00:04:49.040 Who gives his wealth in the path of Allah to purify himself, 00:04:49.040 --> 00:04:51.040 Any favor that he is trying to repay. 00:04:51.040 --> 00:04:54.040 He does not spend what he spends, 00:04:54.040 --> 00:04:57.040 Nor does he give what he gives, as a recompense to a person, 00:04:57.040 --> 00:05:00.040 To repay him for a favor he previously received, 00:05:00.040 --> 00:05:03.040 Nor is it a reward for a blessing, 00:05:03.040 --> 00:05:06.040 That someone had previously bestowed upon him. 00:05:06.040 --> 00:05:09.040 Rather, he gives it for the sake of Allah's rights, 00:05:09.040 --> 00:05:11.040 Seeking only the Countenance of Allah. 00:05:11.040 --> 00:05:13.040 And this giver will surely be satisfied, 00:05:13.040 --> 00:05:16.040 With what he gave in the rights of Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, 00:05:16.040 --> 00:05:19.040 Purifying himself through what Allah will reward him with in the Hereafter, 00:05:19.040 --> 00:05:22.040 As a compensation for what he gave in this world, 00:05:22.040 --> 00:05:29.149 In His path, when he meets his Lord, the Blessed and Exalted. 00:05:29.149 --> 00:05:33.149 A summary of the Tafsir of al-Tabari.
