Pause and discover the Companions, the scholars, and the distinguished figures. A new challenge: Who am I? I am one of the Companions, from among the masters and nobles of the Ansar. I was one of the delegates (*nuqaba'*) on the Night of 'Aqabah. I was the very first person to pledge allegiance to the Prophet—peace and blessings of Allah be upon him—that night, as I said to him: "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, you have our solemn word to conceal whatever you wish us to conceal, to disclose whatever you wish us to disclose, to offer the very blood of our souls, and to seek the pleasure of our Lord with us. We are a people of formidable strength, possessing powerful protection and honor. Indeed, we were like this even when we were worshipping idols and stones; so how could we be today, when Allah has granted us insight into that to which He has blinded others, and has aided us through you? Extend your hand." So the Prophet—peace and blessings of Allah be upon him—extended his hand, and I was the first to clasp the hand of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and pledge allegiance to him. I was also the first person to pray facing the Ka'bah, before the qiblah was ordained toward it. My people opposed my action, so we asked the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, about it, and he said to me: "You were upon a valid qiblah, had you but remained patient upon it." So I returned to their qiblah toward Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem). Death approached me a month before the Prophet's emigration—peace and blessings of Allah be upon him— to Medina. I bequeathed a third of my wealth to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, a third for the cause of Allah, and a third for my heirs. But the Prophet, peace be upon him, returned the third designated for him back to my heirs, and prayed for goodness for me. So, who am I? The best of generations in their stands and example, who followed the Messenger whenever he strove or spoke. They were here, watering the clouds of our lives, so preserve their memory among us, elevated high. They departed, leaving a question in the conscience: Has any star ever risen and shone brightly like them? They filled life with glorious deeds through their actions, and the world of mankind flourished through them.
