A new challenge: Who am I?
I am a Companion from the youth of the Ansar.
I embraced Islam when Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr, may Allah be pleased with him, arrived in Medina.
I was frequently in the company of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, in Medina.
Ever since his migration there.
As for my father, he was known during the Age of Ignorance as "the Monk."
He used to speak of the Resurrection and the religion of the Hanifiyyah.
But when the Prophet, peace be upon him, was sent,
envy overcame him, and he did not respond to his call.
Instead, he showed him hostility and left Medina.
He even fought against the Muslims at the Battle of Uhud alongside the Quraysh.
So the Prophet, peace be upon him, renamed him "the Corrupt" instead of "the Monk."
In the third year after the Hijrah, I married a noble female Companion.
Her name was Jamilah bint 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul, may Allah be pleased with her.
I consummated the marriage with her on the night preceding the Battle of Uhud.
I had asked the Prophet, peace be upon him, for permission to spend the night with her,
and he granted it to me.
When I prayed the dawn prayer,
I set out, intending to join the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.
But my wife, Jamilah, held me back,
so I returned and stayed with her.
I had marital relations with her.
When I heard the caller for Jihad,
I wanted to leave,
but she sent for four of her people
to bear witness that I had consummated the marriage with her.
Then I left and joined the ranks of the Muslim army.
When the fighting began
and the two sides clashed,
I encountered Abu Sufyan ibn Harb during the battle.
We exchanged blows with our swords,
and I struck him a blow that brought him down.
As I stood over him with my sword to kill him,
Shaddad ibn al-Aswad saw me,
threw his spear at my back, and killed me.
After the battle ended,
the Prophet, peace be upon him, saw me
while the angels were washing me between the heavens and the earth
with rainwater in silver basins.
The Prophet, peace be upon him, said,
"Ask his wife about that."
So they asked her,
and she said, "When he heard the caller for Jihad,
he left me while he was in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah)."
She was then asked
why she had called witnesses to our intimacy.
She replied,
"I saw as if the sky had opened up,
my husband entered it, and then it closed."
"I said, 'This is martyrdom,'
so I bore witness that he had consummated the marriage with me
so that I would not be accused."
They mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,
and he said,
"That is he whom the angels have washed."
They later found me among the slain, with my head dripping with water,
even though there was no water nearby.
Thus, I became known as "the one washed by the angels."
The tribes of the Ansar boasted,
the Aws and the Khazraj.
The Aws said,
"Among us is the one washed by the angels,"
referring to me.
"And among us is he for whom the Throne of the Most Merciful shook,"
Sa'd ibn Mu'adh.
"And among us is he whom the bees protected,"
'Asim ibn Thabit.
"And among us is he whose testimony was accepted
as equal to the testimony of two men,"
Khuzaymah ibn Thabit.
The Khazrajis said,
"Among us are four who memorized the Qur'an
during the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,
and no one else collected it as they did:
Zayd ibn Thabit,
Abu Zayd,
Ubayy ibn Ka'b,
and Mu'adh ibn Jabal,"
may Allah be pleased with them all.
