In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. The Senior Scholars Project in Kuwait, in cooperation with the Foundation of Sheikh 'Abd al-'Aziz Ibn Baz, may Allah have mercy on him, is pleased to present to you "The Juristic Selections in Matters of Worship and Transactions," drawn from the fatwas of the eminent scholar and Imam, 'Abd al-'Aziz Ibn 'Abdullah Ibn Baz, may Allah have mercy on him, compiled and arranged by Sheikh Khalid Ibn Sa'ud Ibn 'Amir al-'Ajmi. The Book of Purification. Chapter on Utensils. The eminent Imam Ibn Baz, may Allah have mercy on him, said: "If it is known that faucets and vessels are plated with gold or silver, it is not permissible to use them, due to the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him: 'Whoever drinks from a vessel of gold or silver, or a vessel containing anything of that sort, only draws the fire of Hell into his belly.' This is a general prohibition encompassing pure gold and silver, as well as whatever is plated with either of them. Furthermore, because plated items carry the adornment and beauty of gold, they are forbidden and impermissible by the explicit text of the hadith. The same applies to small utensils, such as teacups, coffee cups, and spoons; it is not permissible for them to be made of gold or silver. Rather, it is obligatory to avoid them and beware of using them. It is not permissible to use gold and silver in buildings, doors, and the like. And in his saying, peace and blessings be upon him: 'Indeed, they are for the disbelievers in this world, and for you'—meaning the Muslims—'in the Hereafter,' there is an admonition prohibiting their use in doors, walls, ceilings, furnishings, and the like. No one is permitted to use gold and silver vessels under any circumstances, neither for practical use nor for decoration; the same applies to plated items, whether plated with gold or silver. Any vessel suspected of being contaminated with impurity, whether belonging to disbelievers or others, one should wash it and then eat from it, just as he, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'If you do not find any other vessels, then wash them and eat from them.' Likewise, performing ablution from them is unobjectionable once they are washed. Gold teeth are permissible exclusively for women. As for men, it is not permissible for them to wear gold teeth if an alternative is readily available. If a man fits a gold tooth merely for adornment, he is obligated to remove it. It has been established in authentic hadiths from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, that the hide of a dead animal is purified through tanning; once it is tanned, it becomes pure, and it may be used for both dry and liquid items. This is the correct view, because it has been characterized as purified. In summary, it is permissible to utilize the hides of dead animals from among lawful, edible animals after tanning for all purposes, for moist and dry substances, for milk and for water. As for the skins of predatory beasts, foxes, wolves, and leopards, there is extensive disagreement among the scholars regarding them. What is proper is that they should neither be acquired nor used, because hadiths have been transmitted prohibiting the skins of predatory beasts, and prohibiting using them as furnishings or riding upon them. Moreover, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, characterized tanning as a purification and a form of ritual slaughter; this indicates that tanning applies only to what is rendered pure through ritual slaughter. Therefore, a believer should not use the skins of predatory beasts; this is the weightiest of the scholarly opinions, and it is the most cautious course for the believer."
