00:02:49.990 --> 00:02:52.060 You must abandon your religion, 00:02:52.060 --> 00:02:57.090 or else I will not eat or drink until I die, and you will be shamed because of me!" 00:02:57.090 --> 00:02:59.090 Sa'd said to her: 00:02:59.090 --> 00:03:01.090 "Do not do this, my mother, 00:03:01.090 --> 00:03:04.090 for I will never abandon my religion." 00:03:04.090 --> 00:03:07.090 She remained for three days and three nights 00:03:07.090 --> 00:03:11.090 without eating or drinking, until she grew completely exhausted. 00:03:11.090 --> 00:03:13.090 So Sa'd said to his mother: 00:03:13.090 --> 00:03:16.090 "By Allah, if you had a hundred souls 00:03:16.090 --> 00:03:19.090 and they departed one by one, 00:03:19.090 --> 00:03:22.219 I would never abandon this religion of mine for anything!" 00:03:22.219 --> 00:03:24.219 When she saw his resolve, 00:03:24.219 --> 00:03:26.219 she ate and drank. 00:03:26.219 --> 00:03:29.219 Thereupon, Allah Almighty revealed regarding them His saying: 00:03:29.219 --> 00:03:36.219 “But if they strive with thee to make thee ascribe unto Me as partner that of which thou hast no knowledge, then obey them not. Consort with them in the world kindly, and follow the path of him who repenteth unto Me. Then unto Me will be your return, and I shall tell you what ye used to do -” (31:15) 00:03:53.219 --> 00:03:56.539 Sa'd had magnificent stands 00:03:56.539 --> 00:04:01.539 that demonstrated his steadfastness, courage, and devotion to this religion. 00:04:01.539 --> 00:04:06.569 Among these was that the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) 00:04:06.569 --> 00:04:09.569 used to disperse in the mountain passes of Makkah 00:04:09.569 --> 00:04:13.569 to perform their prayers secretly from the polytheists before the Migration. 00:04:14.569 --> 00:04:18.569 While Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) was with a group of his companions, 00:04:18.569 --> 00:04:23.569 a group of polytheists suddenly came upon them while they were praying. 00:04:23.569 --> 00:04:26.569 They reviled them and fought with them, 00:04:26.569 --> 00:04:30.569 so Sa'd struck one of them with the jawbone of a camel, wounding him. 00:04:30.569 --> 00:04:34.569 That was the first blood shed in Islam. 00:04:34.569 --> 00:04:40.430 When the Prophet (peace be upon him) arrived in Madinah, 00:04:40.430 --> 00:04:43.430 he remained awake one night and could not sleep. 00:04:43.430 --> 00:04:48.430 He said: "If only a righteous man would guard me tonight." 00:04:48.430 --> 00:04:51.430 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: 00:04:51.430 --> 00:04:55.430 "While we were in that state, we heard the clanking of weapons. 00:04:55.430 --> 00:05:00.430 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) asked, 'Who is this?' 00:05:00.430 --> 00:05:04.430 He replied, 'Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas.' 00:05:04.430 --> 00:05:09.430 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) asked, 'What brings you here?' 00:05:09.430 --> 00:05:15.430 Sa'd said, 'Fear for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came over my heart, 00:05:15.430 --> 00:05:17.589 so I came to guard you.' 00:05:17.589 --> 00:05:23.589 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) prayed for his good and then slept." 00:05:23.589 --> 00:05:26.589 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: 00:05:26.589 --> 00:05:32.939 "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) slept so deeply that I heard his snoring." 00:05:32.939 --> 00:05:36.939 One day, Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) fell ill, 00:05:36.939 --> 00:05:42.939 so the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came to visit him and check on his condition. 00:05:42.939 --> 00:05:47.939 Sa'd said: "O Messenger of Allah, my pain has reached its peak, 00:05:47.939 --> 00:05:52.939 and I am a man of wealth. Should I give two-thirds of my property in charity?" 00:05:52.939 --> 00:05:57.939 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "No." 00:05:57.939 --> 00:06:00.939 Sa'd asked: "Half of my property?" 00:06:01.939 --> 00:06:05.939 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "No." 00:06:05.939 --> 00:06:08.939 Sa'd asked: "One-third of my property?" 00:06:08.939 --> 00:06:14.939 The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Yes, one-third, and one-third is much. 00:06:14.939 --> 00:06:17.939 Indeed, to leave your heirs wealthy 00:06:17.939 --> 00:06:22.939 is better than leaving them poor, begging from people." 00:06:22.939 --> 00:06:28.939 Then he placed his hand on his forehead, wiped over his face and abdomen, 00:06:28.939 --> 00:06:33.939 and said: "O Allah, heal Sa'd and complete his Migration for him." 00:06:33.939 --> 00:06:37.980 Sa'd later related this after some time, saying: 00:06:37.980 --> 00:06:42.980 "I can still feel the coolness of his hand on my liver to this day." 00:06:42.980 --> 00:06:45.899 Before the Battle of Uhud, 00:06:45.899 --> 00:06:50.899 Sa'd met 'Abdullah ibn Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with them both). 00:06:50.899 --> 00:06:54.899 'Abdullah ibn Jahsh said: "O Sa'd, 00:06:54.899 --> 00:06:57.899 shall we not go and supplicate to Allah Almighty?" 00:06:57.899 --> 00:07:01.899 He replied, "Yes." Sa'd began and supplicated, saying: 00:07:01.899 --> 00:07:05.899 "O Lord, when I meet the enemy tomorrow, 00:07:05.899 --> 00:07:10.899 let me encounter a man of intense strength and fierce valor, 00:07:10.899 --> 00:07:13.899 that I may fight him for Your sake and he fight me; 00:07:13.899 --> 00:07:18.970 then grant me victory over him so that I kill him and take his equipment." 00:07:18.970 --> 00:07:21.970 'Abdullah ibn Jahsh said "Ameen" to his supplication. 00:07:21.970 --> 00:07:26.970 Then 'Abdullah ibn Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with him) supplicated, saying: 00:07:26.970 --> 00:07:28.970 "O Allah, O Lord! 00:07:28.970 --> 00:07:33.970 Grant me tomorrow a man of intense strength and fierce valor, 00:07:33.970 --> 00:07:36.970 that I may fight him for Your sake and he fight me; 00:07:36.970 --> 00:07:40.970 then he kills me and cuts off my nose and my ears. 00:07:40.970 --> 00:07:42.970 When I meet You, O Lord, 00:07:42.970 --> 00:07:45.970 You will ask, 'For whose sake were your nose and ears cut off?' 00:07:45.970 --> 00:07:48.970 And I will answer, 'For Your sake and in Your cause.' 00:07:48.970 --> 00:07:50.970 And You will say, 'You have spoken the truth.'" 00:07:50.970 --> 00:07:52.970 Sa'd said: 00:07:52.970 --> 00:07:55.970 "'Abdullah's supplication was better than mine. 00:07:55.970 --> 00:07:58.970 At the end of the day, I saw him 00:07:58.970 --> 00:08:03.970 with his nose and ears strung together on a cord." 00:08:03.970 --> 00:08:06.029 On the day of battle, 00:08:06.029 --> 00:08:11.029 Sa'd stood defending the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), 00:08:11.029 --> 00:08:13.029 fighting the polytheists, 00:08:13.029 --> 00:08:17.029 shooting arrows at them like an expert marksman, 00:08:17.029 --> 00:08:20.029 until his quiver was emptied of arrows. 00:08:20.029 --> 00:08:26.029 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) then scattered his own arrows from his quiver for him, 00:08:26.029 --> 00:08:31.029 and instructed the Muslims around him to give their arrows to Sa'd. 00:08:31.029 --> 00:08:33.029 He kept saying to him: 00:08:33.029 --> 00:08:35.029 "Shoot, O Sa'd, shoot! 00:08:35.029 --> 00:08:37.029 May my father and mother be sacrificed for you! 00:08:37.029 --> 00:08:40.029 Shoot, O sturdy young man!" 00:08:40.029 --> 00:08:44.029 (And "hazawwar" means strong, fierce, and tough.) 00:08:44.029 --> 00:08:48.059 Sa'd shot more than a thousand arrows that day 00:08:48.059 --> 00:08:53.059 until he repelled the polytheists from the Prophet (peace be upon him). 00:08:53.059 --> 00:08:56.059 He used to say with pride: 00:08:56.059 --> 00:09:01.059 "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) never mentioned both his parents together for anyone before me." 00:09:01.059 --> 00:09:05.059 His daughter, 'A'ishah bint Sa'd, 00:09:05.059 --> 00:09:08.059 used to boast and take pride in this, saying: 00:09:08.059 --> 00:09:14.059 "I am the daughter of the Emigrant for whom the Messenger of Allah sacrificed both his parents on the day of Uhud." 00:09:15.289 --> 00:09:19.289 There was a man among the polytheists who had caused great harm to the Muslims, 00:09:19.289 --> 00:09:22.289 so the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 00:09:22.289 --> 00:09:24.289 "Shoot him, O Sa'd!" 00:09:24.289 --> 00:09:29.289 Sa'd said: "I drew an arrow that had no arrowhead, 00:09:29.289 --> 00:09:33.289 shot him, and he fell, exposing his private parts. 00:09:33.289 --> 00:09:39.320 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) laughed until I could see his molar teeth." 00:09:39.320 --> 00:09:42.320 Sa'd even saw the angels on that day. 00:09:42.320 --> 00:09:47.320 He said: "On the day of Uhud, I saw on the right of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) 00:09:47.320 --> 00:09:50.320 and on his left 00:09:50.320 --> 00:09:53.320 two men clad in white garments, 00:09:53.320 --> 00:09:56.320 whom I had never seen before nor ever saw after." 00:09:56.320 --> 00:10:00.320 That is, Gabriel and Michael (peace be upon them). 00:10:00.320 --> 00:10:05.250 Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) endured 00:10:05.250 --> 00:10:08.250 severe hardship and difficult times plight while participating in military expeditions with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), 00:10:20.250 --> 00:10:23.250 marked by scarcity of provisions and supplies, 00:10:23.250 --> 00:10:30.250 to the extent that they would eat tree leaves (may Allah be pleased with them all). 00:10:30.250 --> 00:10:34.250 One of them would relieve himself as a sheep or camel does, 00:10:34.250 --> 00:10:36.250 with no cohesion to it— 00:10:36.250 --> 00:10:42.250 meaning it would not stick together due to its extreme dryness and crumbling. 00:10:42.250 --> 00:10:49.820 Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) continued to defend Islam and engage in jihad alongside the Muslims, 00:10:49.820 --> 00:10:53.820 spreading Allah's religion and defending its sacred realm, 00:10:53.820 --> 00:10:56.820 during the lifetime of the Prophet (peace be upon him) 00:10:56.820 --> 00:10:59.820 and during the reign of the Caliphs after him. 00:10:59.820 --> 00:11:04.860 When the Persian threat intensified on the borders of the Islamic state, 00:11:04.860 --> 00:11:09.860 the Caliph 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) dispatched to them 00:11:09.860 --> 00:11:13.860 an army led by Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) 00:11:13.860 --> 00:11:17.860 to confront them at the Battle of al-Qadisiyyah— 00:11:17.860 --> 00:11:22.860 that monumental battle in which the feet of the Persians were shaken, 00:11:22.860 --> 00:11:25.860 resulting in the deaths of vast numbers of them, 00:11:25.860 --> 00:11:28.860 headed by their commander, Rustam. 00:11:28.860 --> 00:11:33.860 Thus was the great victory for the Muslims on the day of al-Qadisiyyah. 00:11:33.860 --> 00:11:39.049 Nor was this Sa'd's only day in fighting the Persians; 00:11:39.049 --> 00:11:44.049 rather, there was another glorious day for the Muslims under his command 00:11:44.049 --> 00:11:47.049 at the Battle of al-Mada'in, 00:11:47.049 --> 00:11:49.049 where the Persians assembled 00:11:49.049 --> 00:11:53.049 in a final attempt to halt the Muslim advance. 00:11:53.049 --> 00:11:57.049 Sa'd realized that time was on the Persians' side, 00:11:57.049 --> 00:12:00.049 so he decided to launch a surprise attack against them. 00:12:00.049 --> 00:12:03.049 Standing between them was the Tigris River, 00:12:03.049 --> 00:12:06.049 which was overflowing at the height of flood season. 00:12:06.049 --> 00:12:09.080 Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) commanded them 00:12:09.080 --> 00:12:11.080 to put their trust in Allah 00:12:11.080 --> 00:12:14.080 and plunge into the river on their horses. 00:12:14.080 --> 00:12:17.080 The horses of the Muslims swam through the river 00:12:17.080 --> 00:12:20.080 and crossed to the opposite bank. 00:12:20.080 --> 00:12:22.080 The clash ensued, 00:12:22.080 --> 00:12:25.080 The Muslims achieved a monumental victory, 00:12:25.080 --> 00:12:28.080 by which Allah granted glory to Islam and its followers, 00:12:28.080 --> 00:12:33.070 humiliated the Persians, and shattered their power. 00:12:33.070 --> 00:12:35.070 Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) was 00:12:35.070 --> 00:12:37.070 one whose supplications were always answered, 00:12:37.070 --> 00:12:40.070 for the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had prayed for him, 00:12:40.070 --> 00:12:41.070 saying: 00:12:41.070 --> 00:12:45.200 "O Allah, answer Sa'd whenever he calls upon You." 00:12:45.200 --> 00:12:48.200 He had several well-known experiences demonstrating this, 00:12:48.200 --> 00:12:52.200 among which was when 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) 00:12:52.200 --> 00:12:55.200 appointed him governor of Kufa. 00:12:55.200 --> 00:12:58.200 Some of its inhabitants complained about him to 'Umar, claiming: 00:12:58.200 --> 00:13:00.200 "He does not even know how to lead the prayer properly," 00:13:00.200 --> 00:13:03.200 alongside other accusations. 00:13:03.200 --> 00:13:05.200 So 'Umar summoned him and questioned him about it. 00:13:05.200 --> 00:13:08.200 Sa'd replied, "By Allah, 00:13:08.200 --> 00:13:13.200 I used to lead them in prayer exactly as the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) prayed, 00:13:13.200 --> 00:13:16.200 without omitting a single thing." 00:13:16.200 --> 00:13:19.200 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, 00:13:19.200 --> 00:13:22.200 "That is precisely what I expected of you, O Abu Ishaq." 00:13:22.200 --> 00:13:26.259 He then dispatched Muhammad ibn Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) 00:13:26.259 --> 00:13:29.259 to inquire among the people of Kufa regarding Sa'd's conduct among them. 00:13:29.259 --> 00:13:33.330 When Muhammad ibn Maslamah arrived in Kufa, 00:13:33.330 --> 00:13:37.330 he visited the various tribes, neighborhoods, and mosques, asking the people about him. 00:13:37.330 --> 00:13:41.330 Everyone spoke well of Sa'd and praised him, 00:13:41.330 --> 00:13:44.330 until he reached the mosque of the Banu 'Abs tribe. 00:13:44.330 --> 00:13:48.360 A man among them called Abu Sa'da stood up 00:13:48.360 --> 00:13:53.360 and said, "Since you ask us about Sa'd, 00:13:53.360 --> 00:13:56.360 he does not divide spoils among us equally, 00:13:56.360 --> 00:14:01.360 nor does he treat his subjects with justice, nor does he lead military expeditions himself." 00:14:01.360 --> 00:14:05.360 Thereupon, Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and supplicated, saying: 00:14:05.360 --> 00:14:09.360 "O Allah, if this servant of Yours is lying, 00:14:09.360 --> 00:14:11.360 standing up only out of ostentation and seeking fame, 00:14:11.360 --> 00:14:14.360 then prolong his life, lengthen his poverty, 00:14:14.360 --> 00:14:16.360 and expose him to trials." 00:14:16.360 --> 00:14:19.389 Afterwards, that man could be seen walking in the streets, 00:14:19.389 --> 00:14:21.389 winking at young girls, 00:14:21.389 --> 00:14:25.389 with his eyebrows drooping over his eyes due to extreme old age. 00:14:25.389 --> 00:14:28.389 Whenever he was asked about his condition, he would say: 00:14:28.389 --> 00:14:32.389 "I am an afflicted old man who was struck by the supplication of Sa'd." 00:14:32.389 --> 00:14:38.220 Among the situations that illustrate his piety and scrupulousness 00:14:38.220 --> 00:14:42.220 is that he withdrew from the civil strife that occurred among the Companions. 00:14:42.220 --> 00:14:45.220 Some of his associates came to him and said, 00:14:45.220 --> 00:14:49.220 "O Sa'd, will you not join us in fighting?" 00:14:49.220 --> 00:14:55.220 He replied, "Not until you bring me a sword that has two eyes and a tongue, 00:14:55.220 --> 00:14:59.220 which can say, 'This is a believer and this is a disbeliever.'" 00:14:59.220 --> 00:15:05.259 And he recited poetry, saying: "Do not mix foul things with pure ones; cast off such garments and seek safety in purity." 00:15:05.259 --> 00:15:09.259 "Strip off those garments, and seek safety in purity." 00:15:09.259 --> themselves?" 00:15:18.350 --> 00:15:21.350 Sa'd struck him on his chest and said, 00:15:21.350 --> 00:15:23.350 "Be silent! 00:15:23.350 --> 00:15:27.350 I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon
