Pause. Get to know the Companions, the scholars, and the prominent figures. A new challenge: Who am I? I am one of the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, from the Ansar. I am one of those who participated in the Pledge of Ridwan. My conversion to Islam was delayed. Then I embraced Islam and witnessed all the battles alongside the Prophet, peace be upon him. I used to have an idol in my house that I would honor, wipe the dust from, and cover with a garment. The people of Medina would speak to me about Islam, but I would refuse. 'Ubada ibn al-Samit, may Allah be pleased with him, was a close friend of mine. One day, he sat waiting for me. When I left my house, 'Ubada entered with an axe while my wife was away with her family. He began breaking the idol piece by piece, then he left and locked the door. I returned home and looked at the idol, only to find it broken. I said, "This is the work of 'Ubada." I went out in a rage, intending to confront him. On the way, I reflected and said to myself: "There is no good in this idol." "If it had any good in it, it would have defended itself." So I went and knocked on 'Ubada's door. He was wary of me, but when I entered, I said, "I have realized that if there were any good in that idol, it would not have let you do to it what I saw." "And I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." I was with the Prophet, peace be upon him, at al-Hudaybiyyah while we were in the state of ihram. The polytheists had blocked us from performing 'Umrah and from entering the Sacred House. I had thick hair, and lice began to fall onto my face. The Prophet, peace be upon him, passed by me and said, "Are the lice on your head bothering you?" I said, "Yes." So he commanded me to shave my head. And the verse regarding the expiation was revealed concerning me. The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said to me one day: "I seek refuge for you with Allah from the leadership of the foolish." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, what is the leadership of the foolish?" He said, "Leaders who will come after me; whoever enters upon them and validates their lies, and aids them in their oppression, he is not of me, and I am not of him, and he shall not reach the Pond [to drink from it]." So, who am I?
