A serious challenge: who am I?
I am one of the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
I am from the Ansar.
I was a poor man.
I was very fond of women.
And I would indulge in them
in a way others did not.
When the month of Ramadan arrived,
I feared that I might engage in intimacy with my wife,
as I could not restrain myself until morning.
So, I performed zihar (vowing not to have relations) with her until the month of Ramadan passed.
Then, while she was serving me one night,
something of her was revealed to me.
I could not help myself; I jumped upon her and had relations with her.
When morning came,
I went to my people and told them what I had done.
I said to them,
"Come with me to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him."
"So that I may inform him of what I have committed."
They replied, "No, by Allah, we will not do that."
"We fear that a Qur'anic revelation might be sent down regarding us,"
"or that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, might say something about us"
"that would leave us with lasting shame."
"But you go yourself and do as you see fit."
So I went to the Prophet, peace be upon him,
and informed him of my situation.
He asked, "Did you really do that?"
I said, "I did, O Messenger of Allah."
"And I am patient for the decree of Allah."
"So judge me as Allah has shown you."
He, peace be upon him, said to me,
"Free a slave."
I struck the side of my neck and said,
"By the One who sent you with the truth,"
"I do not possess any slave other than this one."
He said, "Then fast for two consecutive months."
I said, "But did I fall into what I fell into"
"except because of fasting?"
He said, "Then feed sixty poor people."
I said, "By the One who sent you with the truth,"
"we spent our night hungry,"
"having no food."
The Prophet, peace be upon him, said,
"Go to the person in charge of your people's zakat,"
"and let him give it to you."
"Feed sixty poor people from it,"
"and a basket of dates,"
"and you and your family eat the rest."
I returned to my people and said to them,
"I found among you narrow-mindedness and poor judgment,"
"and I found with the Prophet, peace be upon him,"
"generosity and sound judgment."
"He has ordered that your zakat be given to me,"
"so hand it over to me."
"So hand it over to me."
