00:00:58.270 surging with activity, 00:00:58.270 --> 00:01:00.270 in preparation for meeting the enemy. 00:01:00.270 --> 00:01:04.269 These are the Companions of the Prophet, peace be upon him, 00:01:04.269 --> 00:01:09.269 moving to and fro in their iron armor like lions of the thicket, 00:01:09.269 --> 00:01:12.269 glowing with a longing to attain martyrdom 00:01:12.269 --> 00:01:15.269 and to win the pleasure of Allah. 00:01:15.269 --> 00:01:18.340 And here is the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, 00:01:18.340 --> 00:01:21.340 emerging to the people, clad in his armor, 00:01:21.340 --> 00:01:25.340 ready to meet the enemy of Allah and his own enemy. 00:01:25.340 --> 00:01:28.430 No sooner did the eyes of the Muslims fall upon him 00:01:28.430 --> 00:01:32.430 than their chests ignited with the fires of zeal, 00:01:32.430 --> 00:01:36.430 and their hearts were kindled with determination and valor. 00:01:36.430 --> 00:01:41.430 And here are those young, budding youths from among the Muhajirun and the Ansar, 00:01:41.430 --> 00:01:45.430 approaching the noble Messenger, peace be upon him, 00:01:45.430 --> 00:01:49.430 none of whom had passed their fifteenth year. 00:01:49.430 --> 00:01:52.430 They were bracing their small frames, 00:01:52.430 --> 00:01:55.430 puffing out their tender chests, 00:01:55.430 --> 00:02:00.430 to appear as men before the Messenger, peace be upon him, 00:02:00.430 --> 00:02:03.430 hoping that he would authorize them 00:02:03.430 --> 00:02:06.430 and grant them the opportunity to fight under his banner 00:02:06.430 --> 00:02:10.430 and to be martyred in the cause of Allah, close to him. 00:02:10.430 --> 00:02:13.430 Once the crowds had gathered, 00:02:13.430 --> 00:02:18.430 the Messenger, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, raised his sword in his hand and said, 00:02:18.430 --> 00:02:21.430 "Who will take this sword by its right?" 00:02:21.430 --> 00:02:24.430 Many hands reached out toward him, 00:02:24.430 --> 00:02:29.430 all of them wanting to win the sword of the Messenger, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, 00:02:29.430 --> 00:02:31.430 and to be honored with it. 00:02:31.430 --> 00:02:35.430 But the noble Messenger, peace be upon him, withheld it, 00:02:35.430 --> 00:02:39.430 and said, "Who will take this sword by its right?" 00:02:39.430 --> 00:02:43.430 Then men stood up to him, among them Umar Ibn al-Khattab, 00:02:43.430 --> 00:02:46.430 al-Zubayr Ibn al-Awwam, and others. 00:02:46.430 --> 00:02:48.430 He held it back, 00:02:48.430 --> 00:02:51.430 until Simak Ibn Kharasha stood up to him, 00:02:51.430 --> 00:02:53.430 a brother of the Banu Sa'ida, 00:02:53.430 --> 00:02:55.430 known by the kunya Abu Dujana, 00:02:55.430 --> 00:02:56.430 and said, 00:02:56.430 --> 00:02:59.430 "And what is the right of your sword, O Messenger of Allah?" 00:02:59.430 --> 00:03:02.430 He, peace be upon him, replied, 00:03:02.430 --> 00:03:05.430 "That you fight with it in the cause of Allah 00:03:05.430 --> 00:03:08.430 until Allah grants you victory or you are killed." 00:03:08.430 --> 00:03:10.430 He said, 00:03:10.430 --> 00:03:13.430 "I will take it by its right, O Messenger of Allah." 00:03:13.430 --> 00:03:15.430 So he gave it to him. 00:03:15.430 --> 00:03:19.689 At that, necks craned toward Abu Dujana, 00:03:19.689 --> 00:03:24.689 to whom the Messenger, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, had granted his sword, 00:03:24.689 --> 00:03:29.689 preferring him over the elders of the Muhajirun and the knights of the Ansar. 00:03:29.689 --> 00:03:33.849 Abu Dujana was not unknown in war 00:03:33.849 --> 00:03:36.849 among the Companions of the Messenger, peace be upon him, 00:03:36.849 --> 00:03:38.849 nor was his status obscure; 00:03:38.849 --> 00:03:42.849 for they all acknowledged him as a brave warrior 00:03:42.849 --> 00:03:44.849 who did not fear death. 00:03:44.849 --> 00:03:48.849 They all knew his red bandana, 00:03:48.849 --> 00:03:51.849 which he would tie around his head when the battle grew fierce. 00:03:51.849 --> 00:03:53.849 The two armies met, 00:03:53.849 --> 00:03:56.849 and they called it the "Bandana of Death." 00:03:56.849 --> 00:04:02.849 They all marveled at the gait with which he strutted between the ranks 00:04:02.849 --> 00:04:04.849 to challenge his peers. 00:04:04.849 --> 00:04:10.849 Nevertheless, some of the noble Companions envied him for this distinction 00:04:10.849 --> 00:04:15.849 which the Greatest Messenger, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, had granted him. 00:04:15.849 --> 00:04:18.850 Let us leave the narration to one of them 00:04:18.850 --> 00:04:21.850 to tell us the story of Abu Dujana 00:04:21.850 --> 00:04:23.850 and the impact it had on him. 00:04:23.850 --> 00:04:25.850 Al-Zubayr Ibn al-Awwam said, 00:04:25.850 --> 00:04:27.850 "I felt a sense of grievance 00:04:27.850 --> 00:04:32.850 when I asked the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, to give me his sword, 00:04:32.850 --> 00:04:34.850 and he refused me, 00:04:34.850 --> 00:04:36.850 but gave it to Abu Dujana. 00:04:36.850 --> 00:04:40.850 I said to myself, 'I am the son of Safiyya bint Abd al-Muttalib, 00:04:40.850 --> 00:04:43.850 the aunt of the Messenger, peace be upon him, 00:04:43.850 --> 00:04:48.850 and I am at the pinnacle of Quraysh in lineage and glory. 00:04:48.850 --> 00:04:50.850 I stood before him 00:04:50.850 --> 00:04:53.850 and asked him to give me the sword before him, 00:04:53.850 --> 00:04:56.850 yet he turned away from me and gave it to him.' 00:04:56.850 --> 00:04:59.850 'By Allah, I will watch what he does with it.' 00:04:59.850 --> 00:05:03.910 Then he set off, and I followed in his footsteps. 00:05:03.910 --> 00:05:06.910 When he stood before the ranks of the polytheists, 00:05:06.910 --> 00:05:10.910 he took out his red bandana and tied it around his head. 00:05:10.910 --> 00:05:12.910 When the Ansar saw him, 00:05:12.910 --> 00:05:15.910 they turned to one another and said, 00:05:15.910 --> 00:05:19.910 'Abu Dujana has tied the Bandana of Death around his head.' 00:05:19.910 --> 00:05:24.910 This is what they would say to him whenever he wore it. 00:05:24.910 --> 00:05:29.939 Then he drew the sword of the Messenger, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, with his right hand, 00:05:29.939 --> 00:05:34.939 and began to walk with a strutting, proud gait between the ranks. 00:05:34.939 --> 00:05:38.939 The Messenger, peace be upon him, looked at him and said, 00:05:38.939 --> 00:05:42.939 'This is a gait that Allah and His Messenger detest, 00:05:42.939 --> 00:05:44.939 except in this situation.' 00:05:44.939 --> 00:05:49.939 Meaning the situation of meeting the enemies of Allah and His Messenger, peace be upon him. 00:05:49.939 --> 00:05:51.939 Then Abu Dujana set off, 00:05:51.939 --> 00:05:55.939 chanting a song that shook hearts, 00:05:55.939 --> 00:05:59.939 and filled chests with zeal and chivalry. 00:05:59.939 --> 00:06:01.980 Then he advanced toward the polytheists, 00:06:01.980 --> 00:06:04.980 charging and maneuvering through their ranks, 00:06:04.980 --> 00:06:07.980 and he would not encounter anyone but that he killed him. 00:06:07.980 --> 00:06:11.069 There was a man in the army of the polytheists 00:06:11.069 --> 00:06:14.069 who made it his habit to track the wounded Muslims 00:06:14.069 --> 00:06:18.069 and finish them off one after another. 00:06:18.069 --> 00:06:21.069 I saw Abu Dujana heading toward him, 00:06:21.069 --> 00:06:24.069 and I saw the man drawing near to Abu Dujana, 00:06:24.069 --> 00:06:27.069 so I prayed to Allah to bring them together, 00:06:27.069 --> 00:06:32.069 and to make the death of this disbeliever at the hands of Abu Dujana. 00:06:32.069 --> 00:06:34.069 It was not long before they met, 00:06:34.069 --> 00:06:39.069 and they exchanged two blows with their swords in less than the blink of an eye. 00:06:39.069 --> 00:06:43.069 Abu Dujana caught his opponent's blow with his shield, 00:06:43.069 --> 00:06:45.069 which split the shield in two. 00:06:45.069 --> 00:06:47.069 As for the blow of Abu Dujana, 00:06:47.069 --> 00:06:50.069 it struck the polytheist in a fatal spot, 00:06:50.069 --> 00:06:54.069 and he left him behind, swimming in his own blood. 00:06:54.069 --> 00:06:56.069 He continued to charge through the ranks, 00:06:56.069 --> 00:07:01.069 defending the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, with his sword, 00:07:01.069 --> 00:07:03.069 confronting his enemies. 00:07:03.069 --> 00:07:06.069 I would see him at times to his right, 00:07:06.069 --> 00:07:08.069 and at times to his left, 00:07:08.069 --> 00:07:11.069 and at times in front of him or behind him. 00:07:12.170 --> 00:07:17.170 Then Abu Dujana saw a person maneuvering among the ranks of the polytheists, 00:07:17.170 --> 00:07:19.170 inciting their enthusiasm 00:07:19.170 --> 00:07:24.170 and urging them to kill the Messenger, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him. 00:07:24.170 --> 00:07:28.170 He approached him and swung his sword at his head, 00:07:28.170 --> 00:07:31.170 but he soon turned the sword away from him. 00:07:31.170 --> 00:07:34.170 I approached him and asked him about that, 00:07:34.170 --> 00:07:36.170 and he said, 00:07:36.170 --> 00:07:39.170 'I realized that it was one of the women 00:07:39.170 --> 00:07:44.170 whom Abu Sufyan Ibn Harb had brought with him to the battle, 00:07:44.170 --> 00:07:48.170 so I honored the sword of the Greatest Messenger, peace be upon him, 00:07:48.170 --> 00:07:50.170 too much to kill a woman with it.' 00:07:50.170 --> 00:07:54.230 At that moment, I knew that the Messenger, peace be upon him, 00:07:54.230 --> 00:07:57.230 had placed his sword in its rightful place, 00:07:57.230 --> 00:08:01.230 and I said, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.'" 00:08:01.230 --> 00:08:05.519 Abu Dujana continued to defend Islam and the Muslims 00:08:05.519 --> 00:08:08.519 with the sword of the Prophet, peace be upon him, 00:08:08.519 --> 00:08:11.519 as long as the noble Messenger, peace be upon him, 00:08:11.519 --> 00:08:13.519 was alive. 00:08:13.519 --> 00:08:17.519 When the Greatest Messenger, peace be upon him, 00:08:17.519 --> 00:08:19.519 joined the Highest Companion, 00:08:19.519 --> 00:08:22.519 Abu Dujana placed himself and his sword 00:08:22.519 --> 00:08:24.519 in obedience to Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, 00:08:24.519 --> 00:08:28.519 the Caliph of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him. 00:08:28.519 --> 00:08:31.519 When the Banu Hanifa apostatized with the apostates, 00:08:31.519 --> 00:08:35.519 and they began to leave the religion of Allah in droves, 00:08:35.519 --> 00:08:38.519 and followed the false prophet Musaylima the Liar, 00:08:38.519 --> 00:08:43.519 al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, prepared a large army for them, 00:08:43.519 --> 00:08:48.519 in which he gathered the prominent Companions from the Muhajirun and the Ansar. 00:08:48.519 --> 00:08:51.519 At their forefront was Abu Dujana, 00:08:51.519 --> 00:08:55.519 the bearer of the sword of the Messenger of Allah, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him. 00:08:55.519 --> 00:09:00.519 Then he entrusted the banner of the army to the Sword of Allah, Khalid Ibn al-Walid. 00:09:00.519 --> 00:09:05.580 The soldiers of the Muslims poured upon the enemies of Allah with the force of a calamity, 00:09:05.580 --> 00:09:09.580 and Musaylima and those with him stood against them like mountains. 00:09:09.580 --> 00:09:15.580 Battles raged between the two parties that would turn the hair of children gray from their horror, 00:09:15.580 --> 00:09:18.580 and the killing increased between the two sides. 00:09:18.580 --> 00:09:21.580 Yet the high number of casualties only increased them 00:09:21.580 --> 00:09:24.580 in zeal, unity, and ferocity. 00:09:24.580 --> 00:09:29.580 Then it was not long before the tide turned in favor of the Muslims against their enemy, 00:09:29.580 --> 00:09:32.580 after a long trial and intense hardship. 00:09:32.580 --> 00:09:37.580 Musaylima the Liar and thousands upon thousands of his soldiers retreated 00:09:37.580 --> 00:09:42.580 to the garden that became known thereafter as the Garden of Death. 00:09:42.580 --> 00:09:46.679 They fortified themselves behind its impregnable walls, 00:09:46.679 --> 00:09:49.679 and took cover behind its locked doors. 00:09:49.679 --> 00:09:52.710 When the Muslims were exhausted by strategies, 00:09:52.710 --> 00:09:55.710 al-Bara' Ibn Malik al-Ansari performed 00:09:55.710 --> 00:10:01.710 the most daring heroic act known to the history of sacrifice on the face of the earth, 00:10:01.710 --> 00:10:06.710 as he managed to open the gates of the garden to the Muslim soldiers. 00:10:06.710 --> 00:10:10.710 The Companions of the Messenger, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, surged 00:10:10.710 --> 00:10:14.710 into the Garden of Death like a flood, 00:10:14.710 --> 00:10:18.710 and descended upon those within it like the hand of fate. 00:10:18.710 --> 00:10:21.710 Some of them entered the garden through its gates, 00:10:21.710 --> 00:10:26.710 while others threw themselves over its walls. 00:10:26.710 --> 00:10:30.710 Abu Dujana was one of them. 00:10:30.710 --> 00:10:36.740 Abu Dujana threw himself into the garden from over one of its high walls, 00:10:36.740 --> 00:10:40.740 and when he fell to the ground, his leg was broken. 00:10:40.740 --> 00:10:43.740 He did not care about it, nor did he pay it any mind, 00:10:43.740 --> 00:10:48.740 but rather he drew the sword of the Messenger of Allah, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, 00:10:48.740 --> 00:10:50.740 and began to cut through the ranks, 00:10:50.740 --> 00:10:53.740 relying on his sound leg, 00:10:53.740 --> 00:10:56.740 until he reached Musaylima the Liar. 00:10:56.740 --> 00:10:59.740 He swung at him with a blow of his sword, 00:10:59.740 --> 00:11:03.740 at the very moment that Wahshi Ibn Harb aimed 00:11:03.740 --> 00:11:05.740 a strike at him with his spear. 00:11:05.740 --> 00:11:11.740 The false prophet fell between them, slain and wallowing in his blood. 00:11:11.740 --> 00:11:12.740 At that point, 00:11:12.740 --> 00:11:17.740 the companions of Musaylima turned upon the knight who was fighting with one leg, 00:11:17.740 --> 00:11:20.740 wanting to finish him off. 00:11:20.740 --> 00:11:23.740 He continued to fight them, and they fought him, 00:11:23.740 --> 00:11:25.740 until his strength failed, 00:11:25.740 --> 00:11:29.740 and the sword blows and spear thrusts multiplied upon him, 00:11:29.740 --> 00:11:32.740 and he fell as a martyr. 00:11:32.740 --> 00:11:34.899 But Abu Dujana 00:11:34.899 --> 00:11:37.899 did not close his eyes for the final time 00:11:37.899 --> 00:11:40.899 until he saw the soldiers of the Muslims 00:11:40.899 --> 00:11:45.899 raising the banners of Islam on the land of Yamama. 00:11:45.899 --> 00:11:53.110 The Messenger, peace be upon him, gave him his sword, 00:11:53.110 --> 00:11:59.139 and preferred him over the elders of the Muhajirun and the knights of the Ansar.
