Perhaps Allah looked upon those who witnessed Badr and said, 00:01:24.000 --> 00:01:28.040 'Do what you wish, for I have forgiven you.'" 00:01:28.040 --> 00:01:30.040 Al-Hafiz (Ibn Hajar) said in al-Fath, 00:01:30.040 --> 00:01:34.040 "This is a great glad tiding that was not granted to others." 00:01:34.040 --> 00:01:36.540 Imam Ibn al-Qayyim said, 00:01:36.540 --> 00:01:40.040 "As for those who speculated about this, and Allah knows best, 00:01:40.040 --> 00:01:44.040 it is that this address was directed to a people whom Allah, the Exalted, knew 00:01:44.040 --> 00:01:46.540 would never abandon their religion, 00:01:46.540 --> 00:01:49.040 but rather would die in Islam. 00:01:49.040 --> 00:01:54.040 And that although they might commit some of the sins that others commit, 00:01:54.040 --> 00:01:58.040 He, the Exalted, would not leave them persisting in them, 00:01:58.040 --> 00:02:02.040 but would grant them success in sincere repentance and seeking forgiveness, 00:02:02.040 --> 00:02:05.040 and good deeds that erase the effects of those sins. 00:02:05.040 --> 00:02:08.039 Their being singled out for this, to the exclusion of others, 00:02:08.039 --> 00:02:11.039 is because this (state of grace) was realized in them, 00:02:11.039 --> 00:02:13.539 and they are indeed forgiven. 00:02:13.539 --> 00:02:18.539 This does not preclude the fact that forgiveness is attained through means performed by them. 00:02:18.539 --> 00:02:23.539 Just as it does not imply that one should abandon obligatory duties, relying solely on the promise of forgiveness. 00:02:23.539 --> 00:02:28.039 For if it had been attained without continuing to uphold the commandments, 00:02:28.039 --> 00:02:33.039 there would have been no need thereafter for prayer, fasting, or Hajj, 00:02:33.039 --> 00:02:35.039 nor for zakat or jihad. 00:02:35.039 --> 00:02:37.039 This is impossible. 00:02:37.039 --> 00:02:40.539 Among the most obligatory of duties is repentance after such acts. 00:02:40.539 --> 00:02:45.039 Thus, the guarantee of forgiveness does not necessitate the abandonment of the means to attain that forgiveness. 00:02:45.039 --> 00:02:50.539 Likewise, for those whom the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, gave glad tidings of Paradise, 00:02:50.539 --> 00:02:53.539 or informed that they were forgiven, 00:02:53.539 --> 00:02:56.539 neither he nor any of the Companions understood this 00:02:56.539 --> 00:02:59.039 as a license for them to commit sins and acts of disobedience, 00:02:59.039 --> 00:03:02.039 or as an exemption from performing obligatory duties. 00:03:02.039 --> 00:03:08.539 Rather, these individuals were even more diligent, cautious, and fearful after receiving the glad tidings than they were before, 00:03:08.539 --> 00:03:12.069 such as the ten who were given the glad tidings of Paradise. 00:03:12.069 --> 00:03:14.569 Imam Muslim recorded in his Sahih, 00:03:14.569 --> 00:03:17.569 on the authority of Jabir, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: 00:03:17.569 --> 00:03:24.569 A servant of Hatib came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, complaining about Hatib, 00:03:24.569 --> 00:03:29.069 saying, "O Messenger of Allah, Hatib will surely enter the Fire!" 00:03:29.069 --> 00:03:33.069 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, replied, 00:03:33.069 --> 00:03:35.569 "You have lied;
