Since I pledged my hand to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, I have never touched my private parts with it.

I participated in the military expeditions that I was able to witness with him, peace be upon him.

I was known for my worship and my asceticism regarding worldly life.

I withdrew from the tribulations (fitnah).

I strove diligently in worship.

It never hindered me from continuing my worship,

When my brothers would visit me to console me in my affliction,

I would say to them:

"The thing most beloved to my soul

is what is most beloved to Allah."

The angels used to greet me

while I was in that state.

But when I underwent cauterization to seek a cure for my illness,

the angels stopped greeting me.

Then, I ceased the cauterization,

and the angels returned to greeting me.

The Commander of the Faithful, 'Umar Ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, used to honor me,

and prioritize me over others.

He then sent me to the people of Basra

to teach them and instruct them in the fiqh of their religion.

The people recognized my merit,

and a group of them expressed this to me, saying:

"No one from the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, has come to Basra who is superior to you."

Despite that,

I wept often and lived in constant awe of Allah the Exalted.

I would always say:

"I wish I were but ashes scattered by the winds."
