The life of the salaf between word and deed.
The women of the salaf.
On the authority of Anas Ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:
A son of Abu Talha passed away, born to Umm Sulaym, may Allah be pleased with her.
He said: The child died in the inner room.
She covered him.
Then she stood up and prepared breakfast for Abu Talha.
Just as she would prepare it for him every night.
Abu Talha entered and said to her:
How is the boy?
She replied:
He is in the best of states.
He praised Allah.
Then she stood up and brought breakfast to Abu Talha.
Then she attended to what women attend to.
Abu Talha fulfilled his needs with his wife.
When the time of the pre-dawn (sahar) arrived,
She said:
O Abu Talha,
Have you not seen the family of so-and-so?
They borrowed something and enjoyed it.
Then when it was requested back from them,
It was difficult for them.
He said:
They were not fair.
She said:
Indeed, your son was a loan from Allah, the Almighty and Majestic.
And Allah, the Exalted, has taken him back.
He praised Allah and said: "To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return."
Then he went in the morning to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said to him:
O Abu Talha,
May Allah bless you both in your night.
She then became pregnant with Abdullah Ibn Abi Talha.
On the authority of Isma'il Ibn Muhammad Ibn Sa'd Ibn Abi Waqqas, may Allah have mercy on him, who said:
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, passed by a woman from the Banu Dinar,
Whose husband, brother, and father had been killed alongside the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, at Uhud.
When they brought her the news of their deaths, she said:
What did the Messenger of Allah do?
They said:
Well, O mother of so-and-so.
He is, by the praise of Allah, as you would wish.
She said:
Show him to me so that I may look at him.
He was pointed out to her.
When she saw him, she said:
Every calamity after you is trivial.
On the authority of 'Ata' Ibn Abi Rabah, who said:
Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said to me:
Shall I show you a woman from the people of Paradise?
I said: Yes.
He said:
This black woman.
She came to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and said:
I suffer from seizures and I become uncovered,
So pray to Allah for me.
He said:
If you wish, be patient and you shall have Paradise,
And if you wish, I will pray that He heals you.
She said:
I will be patient,
But pray to Allah that I do not become uncovered.
So he prayed for her.
On the authority of Ibrahim Ibn 'Uqbah, who said:
I heard Amat Khalid,
The daughter of Khalid Ibn Sa'id Ibn al-'As, may Allah be pleased with her,
Saying to her women at night:
We have untied the knots of Shaytan;
This is not a time for sleep.
On the authority of Thabit al-Bunani:
That Silah Ibn Ashyam was in a battle,
And with him was a son of his.
He said:
O my son,
Go forward and fight until I count you among the martyrs.
He went forward and fought until he was killed, may Allah have mercy on him.
Then he went forward and was killed.
The women gathered at the home of his wife,
Mu'adhah al-'Adawiyyah, may Allah have mercy on her.
She said: Welcome.
If you have come to congratulate me,
Then welcome to you.
But if you have come for anything else,
Then go back.
On the authority of Juwayriyah Bint Asma', may Allah have mercy on her, who said:
Three brothers from the Banu Qati'ah were present at the day of Tustar,
And they were martyred.
Their mother went out one day to the market for some business,
And she met a man who had been present at the battle of Tustar.
She recognized him,
And asked him about her sons.
He said:
They were martyred.
She said:
Were they advancing or retreating?
He said:
Advancing.
She said:
Praise be to Allah.
They have attained victory and protected the honor,
By my own soul, my father, and my mother.
On the authority of al-Sari Ibn Bukayr, may Allah have mercy on him, who said:
I witnessed the young women of the neighborhood standing in prayer at night.
The children of the salaf.
On the authority of Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:
'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, used to bring me in with the elders of Badr.
Some of them said:
Why do you bring this youth in with us,
When we have sons like him?
He said:
He is of whom you know.
He said:
One day he called them and called me with them,
And I did not see him call me on that day
Except to show them my status.
He said:
What do you say
“When Allah's succour and the triumph cometh” (110:1)
Until he finished the Surah.
Some of them said:
We are commanded to praise Allah and seek His forgiveness
When the victory of Allah comes and He grants us conquest.
Some of them said:
We do not know.
And some of them said nothing.
Then he said to me:
O Ibn 'Abbas, do you say the same?
I said: No.
He said:
Then what do you say?
I said:
It is the end of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,
Which Allah made known to him.
"When the victory of Allah has come and the conquest,"
The conquest of Makkah,
That is the sign of your end.
“Then hymn the praises of thy Lord, and seek forgiveness of Him. Lo! He is ever ready to show mercy.” (110:3)
Indeed, He is ever Accepting of repentance.
'Umar said:
I know nothing of it other than what you know.
Aslam said:
While I was with 'Umar Ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him,
And he was patrolling Madinah,
He became tired,
So he leaned against a wall in the middle of the night.
Suddenly, a woman was saying to her daughter:
O my daughter, get up to that milk
And mix it with water.
She said to her:
O mother,
Do you not know what the decree of the Commander of the Faithful was today?
She said:
And what was his decree, O my daughter?
She said:
He ordered his announcer to proclaim:
Milk shall not be mixed with water.
She said to her:
O my daughter,
Get up to that milk and mix it with water,
For you are in a place where neither 'Umar nor 'Umar's announcer can see you.
The young girl said to her mother:
O mother,
By Allah, I would not obey him in public
And disobey him in private.
'Umar Ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, passed by some boys,
Among them was Abdullah Ibn al-Zubayr, may Allah be pleased with him.
They fled, but he stood still.
'Umar said to him:
Why did you not flee with your companions?
He said:
O Commander of the Faithful,
I have committed no crime to fear you,
And the road was not narrow for me to make space for you.
A delegation came to 'Umar Ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz, may Allah have mercy on him, from Iraq.
He looked at a young man among them who was preparing to speak.
'Umar said:
Let the elders speak.
The youth said:
O Commander of the Faithful,
Matters are not determined by age.
If it were so,
There would be among the Muslims those who are older than you.
He said:
You have spoken the truth.
So speak.
