Pause and reflect upon the Companions, the scholars, and the most exalted.
I challenge you: who am I?
I am one of the female Companions.
Allah revealed a Qur'an concerning me that is recited.
This is because my husband, Aws Ibn al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him),
became angry with me one day and said to me, "You are to me as the back of my mother."
Then, he wished to reconcile with me.
I said to him, "No, by the One in whose hand is my soul,
you shall not touch me, for you have said what you said,
until Allah judges between us with His decree."
Then I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him),
and I sat before him.
I mentioned to him what I had encountered with my husband,
and I began to complain to him of his poor temperament.
Then I mentioned to him what he had said to me regarding the zihar (the declaration of divorce).
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said,
"I do not see you as anything but forbidden to him."
I said, "O Messenger of Allah,
my age has advanced and my bones have grown frail,
and I have children by him.
If I leave them with him, they will be lost;
if I keep them with me, they will go hungry."
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) kept saying,
"I do not see you as anything but forbidden to him."
I continued to argue with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him),
and by Allah, I did not leave my place
until the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was overcome
by what usually overcame him of the revelation.
Then it was lifted from him,
and he said to me,
"Allah has revealed a Qur'an concerning you and your companion."
Then he recited to me the beginning of Surah al-Mujadilah.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) then said to me,
"Command him to free a slave."
I said, "O Messenger of Allah,
he does not have the means to free one."
He said,
"Then let him fast for two consecutive months."
I said,
"By Allah, he is a very old man;
he has no strength for fasting."
He said,
"Then let him feed sixty poor people."
I said,
"By Allah, O Messenger of Allah,
he does not have that either."
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) then gave me some dates,
and said,
"Go and give them as charity on his behalf."
"Then treat your cousin well."
So I did.
One day,
the Caliph Umar Ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) came out of the mosque,
accompanied by al-Jarud al-'Abdi,
who was one of the nobles of the Arabs.
Umar saw me on the side of the road,
and he greeted me.
I returned his greeting,
and then I said,
"Well, well, Umar!
I remember you when you were called 'Umayr in the market of 'Ukaz,
frightening the children with your stick.
Not much time passed before you were called Umar,
and not much time passed after that before you were called Commander of the Believers.
So fear Allah regarding your subjects,
and know that whoever fears the threat of punishment,
finds the distant near,
and whoever fears death,
fears missing his opportunity."
Al-Jarud said to me,
"You have spoken too boldly to the Commander of the Believers."
But Umar said to him,
"Leave her be.
Do you not know who she is?
She is the one whose words Allah heard from above seven heavens.
By Allah, Umar is more deserving of listening to her."
So, who am I?
