A new challenge: Who am I?
I am one of the Companions from the people of Makkah.
I was a great commander of the Islamic armies.
I conquered most of the African continent.
I led the Battle of the Masts.
It was the first naval battle for the Muslims.
I embraced Islam and migrated to Madinah.
I became a scribe of the revelation for the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
Then Satan misled me.
I apostatized from Islam.
And I joined the disbelievers.
The Prophet, peace be upon him, declared my blood forfeit on the day of the conquest of Makkah.
He ordered the Companions to kill me.
Even if they found me clinging to the curtains of the Kaaba.
So I went and hid in the house of my foster brother.
Uthman Ibn Affan, may Allah be pleased with him.
When Uthman came, I said to him:
"O my brother, by Allah, I have chosen you."
"Keep me here."
"Go to Muhammad and speak to him on my behalf."
"For if Muhammad sees me, he will strike off my head."
"My crime is the greatest of crimes."
"Yet I have come repentant."
Uthman said:
"Rather, you shall come with me."
When the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, called the people to pledge allegiance.
Uthman brought me to the Prophet, peace be upon him.
He said, "This is my brother."
"Accept his pledge, O Messenger of Allah."
The Prophet, peace be upon him, raised his head.
He looked at me.
And he refused to accept my pledge.
Uthman repeated what he had said.
But the Prophet, peace be upon him, turned away.
And a third time as well.
All the while, he refused to accept my pledge.
Then the Prophet, peace be upon him, accepted my pledge on the fourth attempt.
And he pardoned me.
When we left.
He, peace be upon him, said to his Companions:
"Was there not a sensible man among you who would stand up to him?"
"When he saw me withhold my hand from his pledge."
"And strike off his head?"
They replied:
"We did not know, O Messenger of Allah, what was in your heart."
"Why did you not signal to us with your eye?"
He said:
"It is not fitting for a prophet."
"To have deceitful eyes."
Then my Islam became sincere after that.
I have not committed a sin since I returned to Islam.
I participated in battles with the Prophet, peace be upon him, after the conquest.
And in the fighting against the apostates after his passing.
I participated in the conquest of Egypt.
I conquered most of Africa.
I led the first naval battle for the Muslims.
Against the Byzantine Romans.
I sank more than 900 of their ships.
And I inflicted upon them a slaughter the likes of which they had never seen.
And I conquered the island of Cyprus.
