A new challenge: Who am I?
I am one of the early Companions.
I am among the Emigrants from Makkah.
My brother is ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him.
The Commander of the Faithful.
And one of the Rightly Guided Caliphs.
I was older than him by a year.
And I preceded him in Islam and in the migration.
He loved me very much.
At the Battle of Uhud, he said to me:
"Take this shield of mine, my brother, and protect yourself with it."
I replied to him:
"I desire martyrdom just as you desire it."
So we both left it behind.
I participated with the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
in all of his military expeditions.
Then I participated in the Wars of Apostasy.
I carried the banner of the Muslims at the Battle of al-Yamamah.
And I performed valiantly therein.
When the Muslims were retreating in defeat
at the beginning of the battle,
I began to shout at the top of my voice:
"O men, there are no men [left]!"
"O Allah, I apologize to You for the flight of my companions,"
"and I disavow before You what Musaylimah has brought."
"O people,"
"clench your teeth,"
"strike at your enemy,"
"and press forward."
Then I swore an oath and said:
"By Allah, I will not speak until Allah defeats them,"
"or I meet Allah and present my plea to Him."
Then I advanced, carrying the banner of the Muslims,
and I fought the apostates
until I killed the most wicked of the people:
al-Rajjal ibn ‘Unfuwah,
who had come to Madinah,
and learned Islam and the Qur’an.
Then, when Musaylimah appeared in Najd,
the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, sent him
to keep the people steadfast
and to warn them against Musaylimah.
But he apostatized,
and testified that Musaylimah shared in the Prophethood with the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
Thus, he was a greater trial for the people than Musaylimah himself.
So I killed him.
I continued to fight until I was killed in that battle.
My brother ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, grieved for my death.
He used to say:
"May Allah have mercy on my brother."
"He preceded me to the two best things:"
"He embraced Islam before me,"
"and he attained martyrdom before me."
And he said to the man who killed me,
who was Abu Maryam al-Saluli,
after he came to him having embraced Islam:
"Woe to you!"
"You have killed a brother of mine."
"Whenever the morning breeze blows, I am reminded of him."
"By Allah, I will never love you until the earth loves blood."
The man replied:
"Will you deny me my rights?"
‘Umar said:
"No."
He said:
"Then there is no harm,"
"for only women grieve for love."
So, who am I?
