In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.
A Abridged Manual of the Prophetic Biography (Seerah).
Authored by Sheikh Musa ibn Rashid Al-Azmi, may Allah preserve him.
The Marriage of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to Juwayriyah bint Al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with her).
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) married Juwayriyah bint Al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with her).
That was after he set her free.
Her story was recorded by Imam Ahmad in his Musnad,
And Abu Dawud in his Sunan with a good chain of transmission,
On the authority of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said:
"When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) distributed the captives of Banu Al-Mustaliq,
Juwayriyah bint Al-Harith fell into the lot of Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammas (may Allah be pleased with him)—
Or to a cousin of his.
She wrote a contract of emancipation for herself.
She was a sweet, attractive woman;
No one saw her without falling under her spell.
She came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) seeking his aid regarding her emancipation contract.
Aisha said: 'By Allah, the moment I saw her standing at the door of my apartment, I felt an aversion to her,
For I knew that he would see in her what I had seen.'
She entered upon him and said:
'O Messenger of Allah!
I am Juwayriyah, daughter of Al-Harith ibn Abi Dirar,
The chief of his people.
Calamity has befallen me, as is not hidden from you.
I fell into the lot of Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammas,
So I contracted with him to free myself,
And I have come to you seeking your assistance in paying my ransom.'
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
'Would you consider something better than that?'
She asked: 'And what is that, O Messenger of Allah?'
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
'I shall settle your contract and marry you.'
She said: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah.'
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) replied:
'It is done.'
Aisha said: 'The news went out to the people
That the Messenger of Allah
Had married Juwayriyah bint Al-Harith.
The people then said: "They are the in-laws of the Messenger of Allah!"
So they released whatever captives they held in their hands.'
Aisha said: 'Through his marriage to her, he caused the emancipation
Of one hundred households of Banu Al-Mustaliq.
I know of no woman who was a greater blessing to her people than she.'
The Plot of the Hypocrites to Stir Up Sedition.
We previously mentioned that there went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)
In this military expedition a large number of hypocrites,
At their head Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul, the leader of the hypocrites.
Their going forth with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)
In this expedition was solely
To incite sedition among the Muslims.
Tremendous events took place on account of them,
Including the revival of tribalistic rivalries of the pre-Islamic Jahiliyyah.
The two Shaykhs (Al-Bukhari and Muslim) recorded in their Sahihs
On the authority of Jabir ibn Abdillah (may Allah be pleased with them both) who said:
"We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) on an expedition,
And a man from the Emigrants struck a man from the Ansar on the rear.
The Ansari cried out: 'O Ansar! Help!'
And the Emigrant cried out: 'O Emigrants! Help!'
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) heard this
And said: 'What is this call of Jahiliyyah?'
They said: 'O Messenger of Allah,
A man from the Emigrants struck a man from the Ansar on his rear.'
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
'Abandon it, for it is rotten and repulsive!'
Imam Muslim added in his Sahih in another narration:
'Let a man help his brother, whether he be an oppressor or oppressed.
If he is an oppressor, let him stop him,
For indeed that is his help to him;
And if he is oppressed, let him render aid to him.'
Ibn Salul's Reaction to the Incident.
When word of that reached Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul, he grew furious
And uttered a vile statement.
Ibn Ishaq recorded in the Seerah from his teachers
Who said: Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul became enraged
While in the presence of a group of his people,
Among whom was Zayd ibn Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him),
Who was a young boy at the time.
Ibn Salul said: 'Have they truly done this?
They now vie with us and outnumber us in our own land!
By Allah, our situation and that of the destitute of Quraysh
Is just as the old saying goes:
"Fatten your dog, and it will devour you!"
By Allah, if we return to Al-Madinah, [the most honorable will surely expel the most humiliated therefrom].'
“They say: Surely, if we return to Al-Madinah the mightier will soon drive out the weaker; when might belongeth to Allah and to His messenger and to the believers; but the hypocrites know not.” (63:8)
Then he turned to those present from his people
And said to them: 'This is what you have brought upon yourselves!
You welcomed them into your country
And shared your wealth with them.
By Allah, had you withheld from them what was in your hands,
They would have moved on to another land!'
Recorded by Imams Al-Bukhari, Muslim, and At-Tirmidhi—
And the wording belongs to At-Tirmidhi—
On the authority of Jabir ibn Abdillah (may Allah be pleased with them both) who said:
Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul heard of this
And said: 'Have they truly done this?
By Allah, if we return to Al-Madinah, [the most honorable will surely expel the most humiliated therefrom].'
“They say: Surely, if we return to Al-Madinah the mightier will soon drive out the weaker; when might belongeth to Allah and to His messenger and to the believers; but the hypocrites know not.” (63:8)
Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
'O Messenger of Allah!
Let me strike the neck of this hypocrite!'
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
'Leave him alone,
Lest the people say that Muhammad kills his companions.'
Zayd ibn Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him)
Reports the Incident.
When Zayd ibn Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) heard
That statement from this hypocrite,
He went and informed his uncle of it.
Imam Al-Bukhari recorded in his Sahih
On the authority of Zayd ibn Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) who said:
"I was participating in an expedition,
And I heard Abdullah ibn Ubayy saying: ['Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah]
“They it is who say: Spend not on behalf of those (who dwell) with Allah's messenger that they may disperse (and go away from you); when Allah's are the treasures of the heavens and the earth; but the hypocrites comprehend not.” (63:7)
Until they disperse from around him,' [and: 'If we return to Al-Madinah, the most honorable will surely expel the most humiliated therefrom.']
“They say: Surely, if we return to Al-Madinah the mightier will soon drive out the weaker; when might belongeth to Allah and to His messenger and to the believers; but the hypocrites know not.” (63:8)
So I mentioned that to my uncle, or to Umar,
Who in turn mentioned it to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
The Prophet summoned me, and I recounted it to him.
Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sent word
To Abdullah ibn Ubayy and his companions,
But they swore that they had said no such thing.
Thus, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) disbelieved me."
In another wording in the Two Sahihs,
Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
"So he sent for Abdullah ibn Ubayy
And questioned him, but he swore solemn oaths
That he had neither done nor said it,
So he considered Zayd to have lied and believed the Messenger of Allah."
In the narration of At-Tahawi in Sharh
Mushkil Al-Athar with a good chain of transmission,
Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
"The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) looked at me,
And Sa'd ibn Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said—
Sa'd said: 'O Messenger of Allah,
It was only a young boy who informed me'—
Referring to Zayd ibn Arqam.
Sa'd came, took me by the hand, and led me away,
Saying: 'This boy told me.'
Then Abdullah ibn Ubayy rebuked me,
So I rushed weeping to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him),
Crying and saying:
'By the One Who revealed the Prophethood upon you!
He indeed said it!'
Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
'Thereupon I was afflicted with a grief the likes of which I had never suffered before.
My uncle said to me:
"What did you intend other than having the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) deem you a liar
And detest you?"'"
Divine Revelation Vindicates Zayd ibn Arqam
(May Allah be pleased with him).
"While I was riding alongside the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him),
My head nodding off from severe distress and fatigue,
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came up to me,
Pinched my ear affectionately, and smiled in my face.
I would not have exchanged that gesture for eternal life in this world!
Then Abu Bakr caught up with me
And asked:
'What did the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say to you?'
I replied:
'He said nothing to me,
Except that he pinched my ear and smiled in my face.'
Abu Bakr said:
'Rejoice!'
Then Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) caught up with me,
And I said to him the same as I had said to Abu Bakr.
When morning came,
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) recited
Surah Al-Munafiqun."
In the wording recorded by Ahmad
On the authority of Zayd ibn Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him), he said:
"The Prophet of Allah sent for me—
Or I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)—
And he said: 'Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Sublime,
Has sent down your vindication and confirmed your truthfulness.'
He said: 'So this verse was revealed:
“They it is who say: Spend not on behalf of those (who dwell) with Allah's messenger that they may disperse (and go away from you); when Allah's are the treasures of the heavens and the earth; but the hypocrites comprehend not.” (63:7)
“They it is who say: Spend not on behalf of those (who dwell) with Allah's messenger that they may disperse (and go away from you); when Allah's are the treasures of the heavens and the earth; but the hypocrites comprehend not.” (63:7)
"They are the ones who say: 'Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah until they disperse,'"
Down to His statement:
"If we return to Al-Madinah, the most honorable will surely expel
The most humiliated therefrom."'"
Imam Al-Bukhari recorded in his Sahih
On the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said:
"The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
'This is the one whose ear Allah fulfilled His promise to.'"
Al-Hafiz ibn Hajar stated in Al-Fath:
"The meaning is that Allah vindicated his truthfulness."
