00:00:02.060 --> 00:00:04.059
Breezes of the dawn,

00:00:04.059 --> 00:00:08.500
Breezes of the dawn.

00:00:08.500 --> 00:00:10.500
Speak a word of optimism,

00:00:10.500 --> 00:00:17.120
even when engulfed in the depths of despair.

00:00:17.120 --> 00:00:21.339
A person's word leaves an impact either for or against them,

00:00:21.339 --> 00:00:23.339
for whenever one utters it,

00:00:23.339 --> 00:00:25.339
its effect resonates within their very soul—

00:00:25.339 --> 00:00:27.339
for good or for bad,

00:00:27.339 --> 00:00:29.339
bringing optimism or despair,

00:00:29.339 --> 00:00:31.339
happiness or misery,

00:00:31.339 --> 00:00:35.500
steadfastness or instability.

00:00:35.500 --> 00:00:37.500
That is why our upright faith has taught us

00:00:37.500 --> 00:00:39.500
to always speak good words,

00:00:39.500 --> 00:00:41.500
and among such times

00:00:41.500 --> 00:00:43.500
is uttering them in moments of hardship

00:00:43.500 --> 00:00:45.500
afflicting a person,

00:00:45.500 --> 00:00:47.500
when one may reach

00:00:47.500 --> 00:00:49.500
a critical, distressing stage

00:00:49.500 --> 00:00:51.500
of despair, anguish,

00:00:51.500 --> 00:00:53.500
and inner turmoil.

00:00:53.500 --> 00:00:55.500
Among the proofs for speaking good words

00:00:55.500 --> 00:00:57.500
in times of distress

00:00:57.500 --> 00:00:59.500
is what was narrated on the authority of Ibn 'Abbas,

00:00:59.500 --> 00:01:01.500
may Allah be pleased with them both,

00:01:01.500 --> 00:01:03.500
that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)

00:01:03.500 --> 00:01:05.500
visited a Bedouin

00:01:05.500 --> 00:01:07.500
to inquire after his health.

00:01:07.500 --> 00:01:09.500
Whenever the Prophet (peace be upon him)

00:01:09.500 --> 00:01:11.500
went in

00:01:11.500 --> 00:01:13.500
to visit a sick person,

00:01:13.500 --> 00:01:15.500
he would say to him: "No harm,

00:01:15.500 --> 00:01:17.500
an expiation and purification, if Allah wills."

00:01:17.500 --> 00:01:19.540
The Bedouin replied:

00:01:19.540 --> 00:01:21.540
"You said 'purification'?

00:01:21.540 --> 00:01:23.540
Not at all!

00:01:23.540 --> 00:01:25.540
Rather, it is a raging fever,

00:01:25.540 --> 00:01:27.540
or flaring up,

00:01:27.540 --> 00:01:29.540
against an elderly man,

00:01:29.540 --> 00:01:31.569
that will drive him to the graves!"

00:01:31.569 --> 00:01:33.569
The Prophet replied: "Then so be it,

00:01:33.569 --> 00:01:35.569
then so be it."

00:01:35.569 --> 00:01:37.730
Ma'mar narrated

00:01:37.730 --> 00:01:39.730
from Zayd ibn Aslam

00:01:39.730 --> 00:01:41.730
that the Bedouin died of that very

00:01:41.730 --> 00:01:44.049
illness.

00:01:44.049 --> 00:01:46.049
Ibn Hubayrah said,

00:01:46.049 --> 00:01:48.049
"In this hadith lies proof

00:01:48.049 --> 00:01:50.049
that whenever a Muslim hears from his fellow

00:01:50.049 --> 00:01:52.049
Muslim a word of good tidings,

00:01:52.049 --> 00:01:54.049
or interprets his condition favorably,

00:01:54.049 --> 00:01:56.049
he ought to accept

00:01:56.049 --> 00:01:58.049
that,

00:01:58.049 --> 00:02:00.049
and recognize that Allah Almighty

00:02:00.049 --> 00:02:02.140
is the One decreeing it."

00:02:02.140 --> 00:02:04.140
And on the authority of Jabir ibn 'Abdillah, may Allah be pleased

00:02:04.140 --> 00:02:06.140
with them both,

00:02:06.140 --> 00:02:08.139
the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)

00:02:08.139 --> 00:02:10.139
visited Umm al-Sa'ib—

00:02:10.139 --> 00:02:12.139
or Umm al-Musayyab—

00:02:12.139 --> 00:02:14.139
and asked:

00:02:14.139 --> 00:02:16.139
"What is the matter with you, O Umm al-Sa'ib,

00:02:16.139 --> 00:02:18.139
or O Umm al-Musayyab,

00:02:18.139 --> 00:02:20.139
that you are shivering?"

00:02:20.139 --> 00:02:22.139
She said: "It is fever,

00:02:22.139 --> 00:02:24.139
may Allah not bless it!"

00:02:24.139 --> 00:02:26.139
Thereupon he said:

00:02:26.139 --> 00:02:28.139
"Do not curse the fever,

00:02:28.139 --> 00:02:30.139
for it eliminates the sins

00:02:30.139 --> 00:02:32.139
of the children of Adam just as

00:02:32.139 --> 00:02:34.139
the bellows remove the dross of iron."

00:02:34.139 --> 00:02:36.400
Likewise, in every

00:02:36.400 --> 00:02:38.400
hardship, it behoves the wise person

00:02:38.400 --> 00:02:40.400
to accustom their tongue

00:02:40.400 --> 00:02:42.400
to utter words of optimism,

00:02:42.400 --> 00:02:44.400
so as to ease

00:02:44.400 --> 00:02:46.400
the heat of affliction from their soul,

00:02:46.400 --> 00:02:48.400
and hope through it that Allah

00:02:48.400 --> 00:02:50.460
will dispel their distress.

00:02:50.460 --> 00:02:52.500
The poet said:

00:02:52.500 --> 00:02:54.500
"Be optimistic about what you desire, and it will come to be,

00:02:54.500 --> 00:02:56.500
for seldom is it that someone

00:02:56.500 --> 00:02:58.500
speaks of a thing that was to be,

00:02:58.500 --> 00:03:01.039
without it becoming fulfilled."

00:03:01.039 --> 00:03:03.039
On the Day of the Trench,

00:03:03.039 --> 00:03:05.039
when the Muslims experienced

00:03:05.039 --> 00:03:07.039
such distress as Allah described

00:03:07.039 --> 00:03:09.680
in His saying:

00:03:09.680 --> 00:03:11.680
◁When they came upon you▷

00:03:11.680 --> 00:03:14.000
◁from above you▷

00:03:14.000 --> 00:03:16.000
◁and from below▷

00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:18.000
◁you,▷

00:03:18.000 --> 00:03:20.000
◁and when eyes shifted [in fear]▷

00:03:20.000 --> 00:03:22.000
◁and hearts reached▷

00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:24.000
◁the throats,▷

00:03:24.000 --> 00:03:26.000
◁and hearts reached▷

00:03:26.000 --> 00:03:28.000
◁the throats▷

00:03:28.000 --> 00:03:30.000
◁and you assumed▷

00:03:30.000 --> 00:03:32.000
◁about Allah [various] assumptions.▷

00:03:32.000 --> 00:03:34.000
◁There the believers were tested▷

00:03:34.000 --> 00:03:36.000
◁and shaken with a severe▷

00:03:36.000 --> 00:03:38.000
◁shaking.▷

00:03:38.000 --> 00:03:40.000
◁shaking.▷

00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:42.000
◁shaking.▷

00:03:42.000 --> 00:03:44.990
Al-Bara' said:

00:03:44.990 --> 00:03:46.990
"When it was the Day of the Trench,

00:03:46.990 --> 00:03:48.990
there appeared before us in a part of

00:03:48.990 --> 00:03:50.990
the trench a massive rock that

00:03:50.990 --> 00:03:53.150
pickaxes could not break.

00:03:53.150 --> 00:03:55.150
So we complained of that to the Messenger

00:03:55.150 --> 00:03:57.150
of Allah (peace be upon him).

00:03:57.150 --> 00:03:59.150
He came to it,

00:03:59.150 --> 00:04:01.150
took the pickaxe, and said:

00:04:01.150 --> 00:04:03.150
'In the name of Allah.'

00:04:03.150 --> 00:04:05.150
Then he struck a blow

00:04:05.150 --> 00:04:07.150
and said: 'Allahu Akbar!

00:04:07.150 --> 00:04:09.150
I have been given the keys

00:04:09.150 --> 00:04:11.150
of the Levant! By Allah,

00:04:11.150 --> 00:04:13.150
I can indeed behold its red

00:04:13.150 --> 00:04:15.280
palaces right now.' Then

00:04:15.280 --> 00:04:17.279
he struck a second blow, breaking

00:04:17.279 --> 00:04:19.279
another piece, and said:

00:04:19.279 --> 00:04:21.279
'Allahu Akbar!

00:04:21.279 --> 00:04:23.279
I have been given Persia! By Allah,

00:04:23.279 --> 00:04:25.279
I can indeed behold the white palace of al-Mada'in

00:04:25.279 --> 00:04:27.339
right now.'

00:04:27.339 --> 00:04:29.339
Then he struck the third blow

00:04:29.339 --> 00:04:31.339
and said: 'In the name of Allah,'

00:04:31.339 --> 00:04:33.339
and broke the remainder of the rock.

00:04:33.339 --> 00:04:35.339
He then said:

00:04:35.339 --> 00:04:37.339
'Allahu Akbar!

00:04:37.339 --> 00:04:39.339
I have been given the keys of Yemen!

00:04:39.339 --> 00:04:41.339
By Allah, I can indeed behold

00:04:41.339 --> 00:04:43.339
the gates of Sanaa from where I stand.'"

00:04:43.339 --> 00:04:45.439
And prior to that,

00:04:45.439 --> 00:04:47.439
in Mecca, when the Muslims were

00:04:47.439 --> 00:04:49.439
in the utmost distress and suffering,

00:04:49.439 --> 00:04:51.439
both physical and psychological,

00:04:51.439 --> 00:04:53.439
Khabbab ibn al-Aratt—

00:04:53.439 --> 00:04:55.439
who was among those tortured

00:04:55.439 --> 00:04:57.540
in Mecca—narrated:

00:04:57.540 --> 00:04:59.540
"We complained to the Messenger of Allah

00:04:59.540 --> 00:05:01.540
(peace be upon him)

00:05:01.540 --> 00:05:03.540
while he was leaning against his cloak

00:05:03.540 --> 00:05:05.540
in the shade of the Ka'bah.

00:05:05.540 --> 00:05:07.540
We said to him:

00:05:07.540 --> 00:05:09.540
'Will you not seek victory for us?

00:05:09.540 --> 00:05:11.540
Will you not supplicate Allah on our behalf?'

00:05:11.540 --> 00:05:13.540
He replied:

00:05:13.540 --> 00:05:15.540
'Among those before you, a man

00:05:15.540 --> 00:05:17.540
would have a pit dug for him in the ground,

00:05:17.540 --> 00:05:19.540
and be placed into it;

00:05:19.540 --> 00:05:21.540
a saw would be brought and placed upon his head,

00:05:21.540 --> 00:05:23.540
and he would be split into two halves,

00:05:23.540 --> 00:05:25.540
yet that would not turn him away

00:05:25.540 --> 00:05:27.540
from his religion!

00:05:27.540 --> 00:05:29.540
His flesh would be combed with iron combs

00:05:29.540 --> 00:05:31.540
down to the bone

00:05:31.540 --> 00:05:33.540
and sinew,

00:05:33.540 --> 00:05:35.540
yet that would not turn him away from his religion!

00:05:35.540 --> 00:05:37.629
By Allah, this matter

00:05:37.629 --> 00:05:39.629
will certainly be completed,

00:05:39.629 --> 00:05:41.629
until a rider will travel

00:05:41.629 --> 00:05:43.629
from Sanaa to Hadramawt,

00:05:43.629 --> 00:05:45.629
fearing none but Allah,

00:05:45.629 --> 00:05:47.629
and the wolf for his sheep,

00:05:47.629 --> 00:05:49.629
but you are hasty.'"

00:05:49.629 --> 00:05:52.019
Indeed, the good word

00:05:52.019 --> 00:05:54.019
that is uttered

00:05:54.019 --> 00:05:56.019
by a person with optimism

00:05:56.019 --> 00:05:58.019
may well come to pass in the future.

00:05:58.019 --> 00:06:00.019
For Hassan

00:06:00.019 --> 00:06:02.019
ibn Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) expressed optimism

00:06:02.019 --> 00:06:04.019
for the Prophet (peace be upon him)

00:06:04.019 --> 00:06:06.019
regarding the conquest of Mecca,

00:06:06.019 --> 00:06:08.019
saying in his famous ode,

00:06:08.019 --> 00:06:10.019
addressing thereby

00:06:10.019 --> 00:06:12.019
the polytheists of Mecca

00:06:12.019 --> 00:06:14.139
and warning them:

00:06:14.139 --> 00:06:16.139
"May we lose our horses [if you do not see them],"

00:06:16.139 --> 00:06:18.139
and when the Day of Conquest arrived,

00:06:18.139 --> 00:06:20.139
the women came forward, wiping

00:06:20.139 --> 00:06:22.139
the faces of the horses

00:06:22.139 --> 00:06:24.139
and brushing the dust off them

00:06:24.139 --> 00:06:26.139
with their veils.

00:06:26.139 --> 00:06:28.139
Someone remarked:

00:06:28.139 --> 00:06:30.139
"How excellent is Hassan!"

00:06:30.139 --> 00:06:32.139
and they wiped,

00:06:32.139 --> 00:06:34.269
and they wiped,

00:06:34.269 --> 00:06:36.269
and they wiped,

00:06:36.269 --> 00:06:38.269
and they wiped,

00:06:38.269 --> 00:06:40.269
and they wiped,

00:06:40.269 --> 00:06:42.269
and they wiped,

00:06:42.269 --> 00:06:44.269
and they wiped!

00:06:44.269 --> 00:06:46.269
"How excellent is Hassan

00:06:46.269 --> 00:06:48.269
when he said..."

00:06:48.269 --> 00:06:50.339
and he recited the verses.

00:06:50.339 --> 00:06:52.339
And some scholars narrated

00:06:52.339 --> 00:06:54.339
that the people were ordered to advance toward Kuda

00:06:54.339 --> 00:06:56.339
out of optimism through this verse of poetry,

00:06:56.339 --> 00:06:58.339
hoping he would recover,

00:06:58.339 --> 00:07:00.339
and it came to pass just as he said.

00:07:00.339 --> 00:07:02.500
Likewise, an evil word

00:07:02.500 --> 00:07:04.500
that a person utters

00:07:04.500 --> 00:07:06.500
may also come to pass,

00:07:06.500 --> 00:07:08.500
thus bringing harm upon its speaker.

00:07:08.620 --> 00:07:10.620
And in speaking a good word

00:07:10.620 --> 00:07:12.620
or keeping silent

00:07:12.620 --> 00:07:14.879
lies safety from that.

00:07:14.879 --> 00:07:16.879
Abu 'Ubaydullah,

00:07:16.879 --> 00:07:18.939
the scribe of al-Mahdi, said:

00:07:18.939 --> 00:07:20.939
"Be more eager to seek your fortune through silence

00:07:20.939 --> 00:07:22.939
than you are to seek it

00:07:22.939 --> 00:07:24.939
through speech;

00:07:24.939 --> 00:07:26.939
for affliction is tethered

00:07:26.939 --> 00:07:29.389
to the tongue."

00:07:29.389 --> 00:07:31.389
It is mentioned that 'Ubayd ibn Sharyah

00:07:31.389 --> 00:07:33.389
once followed the funeral procession of a man

00:07:33.389 --> 00:07:35.389
from Banu 'Udhrah.

00:07:35.389 --> 00:07:37.389
When he was placed into his grave,

00:07:37.389 --> 00:07:39.389
he stepped aside

00:07:39.389 --> 00:07:41.389
with his eyes overflowing with tears,

00:07:41.389 --> 00:07:43.389
while a close relative of the deceased

00:07:43.389 --> 00:07:45.389
did not shed a single tear—

00:07:45.389 --> 00:07:47.389
meaning he did not weep

00:07:47.389 --> 00:07:49.389
for his deceased relative.

00:07:49.389 --> 00:07:51.389
So he recited some verses of poetry

00:07:51.389 --> 00:07:53.389
that he used to transmit,

00:07:53.389 --> 00:07:55.389
at the end of which was:

00:07:55.389 --> 00:07:57.389
"A stranger weeps over him

00:07:57.389 --> 00:07:59.389
who does not even know him,

00:07:59.389 --> 00:08:01.389
while his own kinsman in the clan

00:08:01.389 --> 00:08:03.519
is joyful."

00:08:03.519 --> 00:08:05.519
Thereupon, an 'Udhri man

00:08:05.519 --> 00:08:07.519
standing beside him asked,

00:08:07.519 --> 00:08:09.519
"Do you know who composed these lines?"

00:08:09.519 --> 00:08:11.519
He replied, "No, by Allah."

00:08:11.519 --> 00:08:13.519
The man said,

00:08:13.519 --> 00:08:15.519
"Their composer is this buried man,

00:08:15.519 --> 00:08:17.519
Jabalah ibn al-Harith;

00:08:17.519 --> 00:08:19.519
you are the stranger

00:08:19.519 --> 00:08:21.519
weeping over him,

00:08:21.519 --> 00:08:23.519
and this is indeed his kinsman

00:08:23.519 --> 00:08:25.620
who rejoices at his death!"

00:08:25.620 --> 00:08:27.620
'Ubayd was astonished and remarked,

00:08:27.620 --> 00:08:29.620
"Affliction is indeed

00:08:29.620 --> 00:08:32.259
tethered to the tongue!"

00:08:32.259 --> 00:08:34.259
And al-Nu'man ibn al-Mundhir once encamped

00:08:34.259 --> 00:08:36.259
upon a hill,

00:08:36.259 --> 00:08:38.259
so a man said to him,

00:08:38.259 --> 00:08:40.259
"To what point

00:08:40.259 --> 00:08:42.259
would a slaughtered man's blood reach on

00:08:42.259 --> 00:08:44.320
this hill?"

00:08:44.320 --> 00:08:46.320
Al-Nu'man retorted,

00:08:46.320 --> 00:08:48.320
"By Allah, it is you who will be slaughtered,

00:08:48.320 --> 00:08:50.320
and we will surely see how far

00:08:50.320 --> 00:08:52.480
your blood reaches!"

00:08:52.480 --> 00:08:54.480
Some of those present remarked,

00:08:54.480 --> 00:08:56.480
"Many a word says to its speaker:

00:08:56.480 --> 00:08:59.019
'Leave me unsaid!'"

00:08:59.019 --> 00:09:01.019
Therefore, O rational human being,

00:09:01.019 --> 00:09:03.019
strive against your tongue

00:09:03.019 --> 00:09:05.019
to speak only good words

00:09:05.019 --> 00:09:07.019
at all times.

00:09:07.019 --> 00:09:09.019
Utter nothing but words of goodness,

00:09:09.019 --> 00:09:11.019
even if you find yourself in the direst

00:09:11.019 --> 00:09:13.019
of circumstances and the most critical of calamities.

00:09:13.019 --> 00:09:15.059
And beware of

00:09:15.059 --> 00:09:17.059
uttering words of despair

00:09:17.059 --> 00:09:19.059
and evil;

00:09:19.059 --> 00:09:21.059
for if your body and soul could bear

00:09:21.059 --> 00:09:23.059
the severity of the affliction,

00:09:23.059 --> 00:09:25.059
can your tongue not manage to adhere to

00:09:25.059 --> 00:09:27.250
good speech?

00:09:27.250 --> 00:09:29.250
Be like those who are filled with confidence in Allah,

00:09:29.250 --> 00:09:31.250
who proclaim through their state

00:09:31.250 --> 00:09:33.409
and being:

00:09:33.409 --> 00:09:35.409
"Despite the wounds and despite [the pain],

00:09:35.409 --> 00:09:37.409
we remain optimistic,

00:09:37.409 --> 00:09:39.409
even if the oppressor acts with tyranny.

00:09:39.409 --> 00:09:41.409
Despite the darkness

00:09:41.409 --> 00:09:43.409
that cloaks the horizons of our sky,

00:09:43.409 --> 00:09:45.409
we remain optimistic about that

00:09:45.409 --> 00:09:47.440
which will dispel the gloom of injustice.

00:09:47.440 --> 00:09:49.440
Despite the calamities and distress,

00:09:49.440 --> 00:09:51.440
we indeed

00:09:51.440 --> 00:09:53.440
remain optimistic for a dawn of ease

00:09:53.440 --> 00:09:55.440
shining upon the peaks.

00:09:55.440 --> 00:09:57.440
We shall never surrender, nor shall we yield

00:09:57.440 --> 00:09:59.440
to our wounds,

00:09:59.440 --> 00:10:01.440
for within us lies an enduring spirit

00:10:01.440 --> 00:10:03.570
of high resolve.

00:10:03.570 --> 00:10:05.570
We remain optimistic for an accepted repentance

00:10:05.570 --> 00:10:07.570
that delivers our mount

00:10:07.570 --> 00:10:09.570
safely to meadows of bliss.

00:10:09.570 --> 00:10:11.570
We are optimistic

00:10:11.570 --> 00:10:13.570
in our Lord,

00:10:13.570 --> 00:10:15.570
optimistic through our patience,

00:10:15.570 --> 00:10:17.570
optimistic without ever growing weary."
